Hydrogels are regarded as an ideal medium for human-machine interaction (HMI) due to their adjustable modulus and flexibility, enabling seamless interaction with smart devices. However, in the field of medical rehabilitation, most of the hydrogel-based sensors are simply used to detect the motion signals of fragments and are rarely applied to help patients with rehabilitation training and improve the efficiency of doctors’ diagnosis. This is due to the unstable sensing properties and poor mechanical properties of most hydrogels. The poor durability greatly limits the application of hydrogel-based sensors. Here, a conductive hydrogel sensor with visual temperature sensitivity and good mechanical properties (300% strain, breaking stress 0.19 MPa) is fabricated by introducing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-borax system combined with a freeze-thaw physical regulation strategy. The PVA/PNIPAM/PEDOT: PSS (PPP) hydrogels possess a rapid response/recovery time (200 ms/200 ms), a low detection limit of 1% strain, and good stability and durability. Furthermore, by integrating the hydrogels with a LabVIEW circuit program and wireless transmission technology, we have created an advanced intelligent HMI system that facilitates monitoring, rehabilitation training, and remote diagnosis. The conductive hydrogel sensor with visual temperature-sensitive change and excellent mechanical properties has been successfully prepared by introducing PVA-borax system and freeze-thaw physical regulation strategy. The breaking strain of PVA/PNIPAM/PEDOT: PSS hydrogels achieves 300%, and the breaking stress achieves 0.19 MPa. As a strain sensor, due to the presence of the conductive polymer PEDOT: PSS, PPP hydrogel has a fast response/recovery time (200 ms / 200 ms), a low detection limit of 1% strain, and good stability and durability, enabling accurate monitoring of various human movements. By further combining PPP hydrogel sensor with the LabVIEW circuit program and wireless transmission technology, an advanced intelligent HMI system integrating monitoring, rehabilitation training and remote diagnosis has been constructed.

The photo-thermochromic materials with self-regulation of solar light transmittance have attracted a increasing attention because of its potential in smart windows and energy-saving field. Here, a novel bidirectional fast self-responsive PVA-PNIPAM/Li m Cs n WO 3 composite hydrogel has been fabricated by coupling the high near-infrared (NIR) shielding/photothermal effect of Li m Cs n WO 3 particles and thermally light-adjusting properties of polyvinyl alcohol-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PVA-PNIPAM) hydrogels. Under solar irradiation, the photothermal effect of Li m Cs n WO 3 particles can drive the phase transition of PVA-PNIPAM hydrogel, thus the composite hydrogel exhibits bidirectional fast self-responsive spectral transmission/shielding switching function. When the Li m Cs n WO 3 (LCWO) particles doping amount is 1.67 × 10 −3 g/mL, the maximum NIR shielding rate of the sandwich structured smart window filled with the composite hydrogel can reach up to 99.77%, meanwhile the smart window can allow part of the visible light to enter the room for day lighting, with the visible light transmittance before and after its optical switching being 67.48% and 16.76%, respectively, and the simulated thermal insulation test results indicate that the thermal insulation temperature difference between external surface of the smart window and indoor air is 30 °C higher than that of ordinary hollow glass windows. Moreover, due to the high photothermal effect/NIR shielding of Li m Cs n WO 3 and specific heat capacity of PVA-PNIPAM hydrogel, the obtained smart window exhibits strong thermal insulation and heat storage capabilities. The photothermal solar transmittance self-regulation mechanism of the PVA-PNIPAM/Li m Cs n WO 3 composite hydrogel has been discussed. This research has a great significance for the development of high energy efficient smart windows.

A hygroscopic layer plays an important role in improving the output abilities of energy generation from ubiquitous moisture, whose mechanism is unclear. Herein, three kinds of hydrogels with different pore structures/functional groups are designed as hygroscopic layers, and a universal strategy was proposed to assemble them into hydrogel-based moisture-electric generators (HMEGs). The hydrogels’ pore structure affects the moisture absorption rate, while the functional groups regulate the diffusion path of water. HMEG’s power generation is a synergistic effect of ionic diffusion and streaming potential, which is closely related to the water diffusion within the material and is not directly related to the amount of moisture absorption. HMEG, which absorbs moisture quickly, stores water efficiently, and releases moisture slowly, has an excellent performance and stable voltage output. Based on this mechanism, HMEG employed the calcium chloride-poly(vinyl alcohol)-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (CPVPN), semi-interpenetrating network (semi-IPN) hydrogel as the hygroscopic layer showed an open-circuit voltage as high as 0.34 V and a power density of 33.23 μA cm–3. This study opens a perspective on hydrogel HMEG and provides insights into high-performance HMEG design.

In recent years, global warming has precipitated a series of challenges to human living comfort. While some techniques can offer mitigation, their energy-intensive nature renders them unsuitable for widespread adoption in underdeveloped regions. To address these shortcomings, a cost-effective smart window with indoor temperature regulation was developed. It was fabricated by integrating {Mo154} with a blend of polyvinyl alcohol/poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PVA/PNIPAM) hydrogel. Based on the temperature induced phase transformation ability of PNIPAM, the composite hydrogel can be used to regulate the indoor temperature. Concurrently, PVA can mitigate the problem of volume shrinkage from PNIPAM phase transition. More importantly, the {Mo154} can reduce the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of Mo-PVA/PNIPAM hydrogel, as well as provide photothermal properties for intelligently sensing the outside temperature. The smart window can display a favorable sunlight modulation property (ΔTsol = 80.8%) and a rapid heating rate response to light exposure. Due to the presence of the {Mo154}, the smart window became opaque to block sunlight when the indoor temperature exceeded 28.9 oC. This feature can keep indoor cooling in the hot summer without any energy consumption. Moreover, the Mo-PVA/PNIPAM-based smart window also demonstrated favorable durability, maintaining its functionality after 100 times heating (40 oC)-cooling (20 oC) cycles, which can support long time usage and suit for the underdeveloped areas with limited electric energy.
