The self-warning and thermal-induced self-healing microcapsules were fabricated by the interfacial in situ polymerization process, which consists of SiO2 as the shell material and epoxy resin, a thermal initiator, and a fluorescent agent as the core materials. The squeegee coating method was used to prepare the self-healing self-warning PVC-coated fabric. The microcapsules have a core–shell structure with an average particle size of 1.5 μm and a high sphericity with a coverage rate of 77% and excellent thermal stability below 320 °C. The PVC coating agent has good wettability with the microcapsules with a contact angle of 34.6 ± 0.9°. When cracks appear on the surface of the coated fabric containing microcapsules, the fluorescent agent and repair agent (epoxy resin and thermal initiator) will then flow out from the broken microcapsules and fill the cracks owing to the great wettability of the PVC coating agent with a contact angle of 44.2 ± 1.1°. Under UV light, the cut displays a yellow fluorescence line, indicating the location of the damage. After filling the cracks, the epoxy resin polymerizes with the thermal initiator at 120 °C. When the heating time reaches 6 h, the cuts in the fabric are healed, and the strength of the coated fabric reaches 699 N, thereby matching the original strength of 713 N before cutting.

As one of the most widely utilized polymer coating systems, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is extensively applied in industrial protection fields due to its excellent processability and cost efficiency. To meet rising performance demands in extreme environments, developing PVC coatings with efficient flame retardancy and smoke suppression has become a key research focus. This study developed an innovative BiOCl@Cu-MOF hybrid through an in situ growth strategy. Incorporating the additive at 15 phr increased the limiting oxygen index (LOI) from 23.4 % to 29.4 %. The PVC coating also passed the UL-94 rating test, reaching the highest V-0 level. Cone calorimetry analysis showed a 55.9 % reduction in peak heat release rate, indicating superior flame retardant behavior. In terms of smoke suppression, the coating achieved a 66.7 % decrease in peak smoke production rate. More importantly, the peak carbon monoxide production, a critical lethal factor in fires, was suppressed by 46.9 %. The PVC coating further exhibited 99.9 % antibacterial efficacy against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . This work establishes a pioneering design paradigm for multifunctional protective coatings, offering significant potential in fire-safe building materials, electronics encapsulation, and bio-secure applications.

Most of the polymer coatings are directly exposed to sunlight, leading to serious degradation on their surfaces. Functional triazine ultraviolet absorber (FT-UVA) with surface enrichment property was synthesized. The surface enrichment property of FT-UVA in coating surfaces was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectrometry (ATR-IR). Contact angle measurements suggest that the enrichment of FT-UVAs on coating surface yielded a hydrophobic film. The effective protection of FT-UVA for PVC coating was investigated by artificial accelerated aging test. The calculation of dynamic process was conducted to gain insights into the surface enrichment mechanism of FT-UVA in coating.
