In this work, Polyvinylidene Fluoride (PVDF)/polystyrene (PS)/high density polyethylene (HDPE) ternary blends displayed a core-shell structure where HDPE was the core, PS was the shell, and this core-shell system dispersed in PVDF matrix. Here, multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and ferroferric oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ) was incorporated. F-F composites with MWCNTs was in PS shell and Fe 3 O 4 was in PVDF matrix and E-F composites with MWCNTs was in PS shell and Fe 3 O 4 was in HDPE core were fabricated by melt blending. It was indicated that the core-shell morphology between PS and HDPE was well retained with the incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 and MWCNTs. Both the electrical conductivity of F-F and E-F composites were similar without no obvious change with the incorporation of Fe 3 O 4 . Composites with greater than 20 dB shielding effectiveness were easy to obtain. The highest SE we observed was for the F-F composite with 1 vol% Fe 3 O 4 and 1 vol% MWCNTs was 25 dB at 9.5 GHz, and the SE was over 20 dB in the whole measured frequency(X-band). The E-F composites with SE greater than 20 dB in X-band was at 2 vol% Fe 3 O 4 and 1 vol% MWNCTs. Such effective and lightweight nanocomposites were obtained, resulting from the synergetic effect of MWCNTs and Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles .

Lithium metal batteries are considered promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems owing to the high theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential of lithium metal. However, conventional liquid electrolytes face challenges such as dendrite formation and “dead lithium” accumulation, limiting performance and safety of lithium metal batteries. In this study, a high-interface-compatible polyvinylidene fluoride PVDF-based quasi-solid-state electrolyte (PVDF@PS) was prepared using a simple direct scraping method, incorporating a high-affinity polyacrylic acid (PAA) binder. Under in-situ pressure during battery encapsulation, high-purity silicon was lithiated to form a lithium-silicon alloy, reducing the nucleation and diffusion barriers of lithium. Concurrently, a small amount of lithium reacted with the silicon surface oxides, forming a stable passivation layer of Li 4 SiO 4 , significantly mitigating the risk of dendrite penetration that could cause short circuits. Additionally, the PAA binder was lithiated into a highly flexible Li-PAA structure. The combination of these three components forms an alloy protective layer, enhancing the electrolyte/electrode interface stability with both flexibility and robustness. This design effectively regulates the volume changes of the lithium anode during the dynamic plating/stripping process, promotes uniform lithium deposition, and suppresses dendrite formation. Furthermore, the protection layer reduces side reactions by isolating the lithium metal from direct interaction with the electrolyte. As a result, compared to uncoated PVDF-based quasi-solid-state electrolytes, PVDF@PS demonstrates excellent stability and a notably low overpotential (20 mV) in lithium symmetric cells at various current densities. In LiFePO 4 (LFP) full cells, it retains 80.3 mAh g −1 capacity after 1300 cycles, even under a high charge/discharge rate of 5C.

Membrane distillation (MD) suffers from challenges in industrial applications because of membrane wetting caused by hydrophobic decay. Although surface modifications such as nanoparticle loading or chemical grafting have been explored, weak interfacial adhesion and functional component detachment persists. This paper presents a novel dissolution-phase separation strategy for fabricating robust poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/polystyrene (PS) composite membranes for MD. The hydrophobic PS microspheres and PVDF were dissolved in a PolarClean solvent to prepare a dilute solution. A PVDF base membrane was immersed in this solution and transferred to a water bath for phase separation, wherein the surface of the base membrane was dissolved in the PVDF/PS/PolarClean solution to form new PVDF/PS micro–nanostructures. The PS microspheres were entangled with molecular chains of PVDF and stably formed on the base membrane surface by controlling the solution temperature, immersion time, and concentrations of PVDF and PS in the dilute solution. The newly formed PVDF/PS micro/nanostructures significantly enhanced the antiwetting properties of the membrane. In contrast to conventional modification strategies, this method utilizes inherent hydrophobicity and micro/nanoscale structures of PVDF and PS for reinforcing the hydrophobicity of the resulting membrane, which significantly improves its stability. After 48 h of the MD process, the optimized PVDF/PS membrane exhibited a stable flux of 29.8 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and 23.1 kg·m −2 ·h −1 for 35 and 100 g/L saline water with all salt rejections above 99.9 %. In addition, the membrane demonstrated excellent performance in treating simulated dye wastewater, which maintains a high water flux above 20 kg m −2 h −1 with near-complete dye rejection and 99.9 % salt rejection.

Conductive composites based on polymers and conductive nanofillers are widely studied as a promising material. The rational design of 3D conductive networks in composites is crucial to improve their electrical conductivity and reduce the dosage of nanofillers. Herein, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and polystyrene (PS) bi-continuous structures with modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) tailored to anchor at the interface are designed to achieve an ultralow electrical percolation threshold because of the formation of a thin interfacial conductive layer. In this work, the modification of CNTs with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), which contributes to the improvement of the compatibility between PVDF and CNTs, is effective to control the distribution of CNTs in composites. It promotes the migration of CNTs from the PS phase to the interface of PVDF and PS. Consequently, the interfacial conductive layer is formed at a low CNT content, and the electrical percolation threshold of PVDF/PS/CNTs-PMMA nanocomposites is only 0.07 vol%, having a great decrease of about 50% compared with that of PVDF/PS/CNTs nanocomposites. Thus, it is demonstrated that the distribution of CNTs can be tailored to anchor at the interface by proper chemical modification to form an interfacial conductive layer and a decrease of percolation threshold can also be achieved.
