Ag@SnS/PVDF membranes with self-cleaning ability driven by photocatalysis process

Jia-Feng Xu,Jia-Cheng Wu,Lu-Jiong Ruan,Wei Tian,Xi Yan,Yan Chen,Xiao-Jing Guo,Wan-Zhong Lang

Coupling photocatalysis with membrane separation technology becomes one pioneering method to solve the membrane fouling . In this study, Ag@SnS photocatalyst was synthesized and blended with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to fabricate Ag@SnS/PVDF composite membranes via non-solvent induce phase separation (NIPS) method. The results show that with the addition of Ag@SnS, water flux of Ag@SnS/PVDF hybrid membranes increases due to the enhanced membrane hydrophilicity and increased porosity. The optimal hybrid membrane (MAS-2) exhibits the rejection rate of 97.0 % and 95.4 % for BSA and HA accompanied with a water permeance of 578.5 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 . Moreover, MAS-2 membrane reveals excellent self-cleaning ability by photodegradation of HA on membrane surface , and its flux recovery rate (FRR) can achieve 91.7 % after UV irradiation and 95.8 % after 3 h natural sunlight irradiation via photocatalysis regeneration. The heterostructure of Ag@SnS can assist separation of photoinduced electrons and holes by transferring photoinduced electrons to Ag nanoparticles with enhanced photocatalytic activity. After three cycles, the FRR can still reach around 90.0 %, revealing its outstanding cleaning ability. Therefore, the Ag@SnS/PVDF membranes have a foreseeable potential in the field of water treatment due to its high flux performance, self-cleaning ability via photocatalysis process.

High-Performance photoinduced antimicrobial membrane toward efficient PM2.5-0.3 capture and Oil-Water separation

Qian Geng,Senjie Dong,Yajian Li,Huizhi Wu,Xiao Yang,Xin Ning,Ding Yuan

Design and fabrication of highly efficient and multifunctional nanofiber membranes for biological protection and environmental conservation has attracted wide attention. Herein, a unique bimodal fiber diameter distributed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite membrane decorated by zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF8) featuring favorable antibacterial activity was successfully prepared for efficient particulate matter (PM) capture and oil–water separation via a simple and feasible electrospinning process. Benefiting from the metal ions (Zn 2+ ) and organic ligands released by ZIF8, particularly the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) under photoexcitation, the composite membrane presented strong bactericidal activity against Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) and Gram-negative Escherichia coli ( E. coli ). More impressively, owing to the effective drug loading capacity of ZIF8, the cefixime-encapsulated nanofiber membrane further exhibited remarkably enhanced antibacterial properties. Meanwhile, composite membrane achieved superior capture efficiency (99.90 ± 0.05 %) for PM 0.3 and high purification ability (99.40 ± 0.10 %) for PM 2.5 in real smoke environment under the combined effect of the strong surface charge on ZIF8 surface, high polarity of β-phase in PVDF, and ultrafine fibers, etc.; it also possessed excellent separation ability for water-in-oil emulsion and oil–water mixture due to the distinguished selective wettability, three dimensional porous structure and the enhanced demulsification performance of ZIF8. This multifunctional filtration/separation composite membrane emerges great potential in the fields of biological protection, air pollution control and oil–water separation.

Interface synthesis of Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes and their selective adsorption activity toward Congo red

Defeng Hu,Zhongqiao Sun,Yide Han,Hao Meng,Xia Zhang

Considering the surface affinity of MOFs and separation advantages of polymer membranes, herein, a one-step interface synthesis strategy is used in the construction of Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes, in which Cu2+ ions and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) were dissolved in ionized water and n-octanol separately, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) films were laid at the interface of two immiscible solvents. As a result, Cu-BTC was generated and readily self-assembled inside the PVDF films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method were used to characterize Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes, and Congo red (CR) was selected as the target dye to evaluate the surface adsorption activity of the hybrid membranes. Batch adsorption tests under various conditions were conducted to optimize the adsorption capacity, adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics, which were analyzed to further explore the adsorption behavior. Based on this, the adsorption mechanism was discussed. It is worth noting that because of the π–π stacking interaction and hydrogen bonding, an extraordinary adsorption capacity of CR was achieved, and the good separation advantage and the cyclic adsorption performances endow the resulting Cu-BTC/PVDF hybrid membranes with promising applications in the removal of organic dyes from practical wastewater.

Fabrication and performance of the wide-band highly shielded polyvinylidene fluoride film

Liwu Fu,Jiangfeng Hu,Peng Luo,Dong Xiang,Wenying Hui,Lei Cheng,Yan Zhou,Xiong Zhengrong,Dengzun Yao,Xianghai Jing

The white weathering layer materials that can effectively block the entire solar light band is of great importance for improving the service life, safety, and reliability of the materials. In this work, CsxWO3@PDA was prepared by in situ polymerization to achieve high absorption in the full spectral range and increase the compatibility between CsxWO3 particles and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). PVDF composite films with different particle contents were prepared through compounding with titanium dioxide (TiO2) and CsxWO3@PDA. The prepared composite films were characterized by FT-IR, field emission scanning electron microscopy, universal material testing machine, whiteness meter, and ultraviolet visible spectroscopy. The results showed that the CsPVDF composite films with CsxWO3@PDA and TiO2 exhibited a whiteness level higher than 74, a transmittance of less than 5% in the wavelength range of 200–2500 nm, and a transmittance close to zero in the range below 1750 nm, demonstrating excellent shielding effect. The xenon lamp aging test also confirmed that the composite films had excellent weather resistance after aging 500 h. At the same time, adding a certain amount of CsxWO3@PDA could improve the tensile strength of PVDF.

Preparation of hydrophobic PVDF/PVC/nano-graphite composite membrane and its self-cleaning properties

Dashuai Zhang,Yan Zhang,Xiaopeng Zhang,Chen Li,Lili Wang,Tianyi Shun,Hongting Wu,Qiang Lin,Zaifeng Shi

In this study, novel physical blending modified membranes are prepared using the non-solvent induced phase separation method, the influences of nano-graphite and Poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) incorporated into the hydrophobic performance of the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane were investigated. The composite membrane was prepared not only reduces the cost of producing PVDF membrane, but also enhances the hydrophobicity of the membrane. The addition of nano graphite and PVC accelerated the phase transformation of PVDF and changed the crystal structure of PVDF. Therefore, the surface roughness of the composite membrane is changed, and the hydrophobicity of the composite membrane is enhanced compared with the original PVDF membrane. the crystal structure and crystallinity of the composite membranes can be analyzed by WAXD and DSC, the surfaces morphology of the composite membranes were characterized by SEM and AFM, the wetting and hydrophobicity of the composite membrane by CA and SFE. The experimental results show that adding a small amount of nano inorganic substance (nano graphite) to the (PVDF-PVC) blend polymer is an effective method to prepare and improve the hydrophobic performance of the blend polymer membrane. The PVDF-PVC/nano-graphite prepared in the experiment not only improves the hydrophobic performance of the PVDF membrane, but also reduces the cost of the composite membrane through the addition of PVC. Meanwhile, the membrane has a durable self-cleaning performance, which widens the applications of PVDF membranes.

Microstructure manipulation in PVDF/styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer composite membranes: Effects of miscibility on the phase separation

Dongdong Kang,Huiju Shao,Guijing Chen,Xiaoliang Dong,Shuhao Qin

Amphiphilic copolymers have increasingly attracted researchers’ attention to produce the hydrophilic and antifouling polymeric membranes. However, few studies has been reported on systematic manipulation of matrix miscibility to control the membrane microstructure during the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS). Herein, a facile method is brought forward to investigate the effects of miscibility on the structure and performance of the membranes. Through the transformation of styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) into sodium styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMANa), a homogeneous and transparent dope solution was successfully prepared. Next, the crescent pores and spherical particles in the PVDF/SMA membrane were eliminated to achieve the uniformly porous PVDF/SMANa membranes by the exchange of nonsolvent and solvent components. Importantly, SMANa could segregate at the external surface and internal pore walls as SMA to enhance the hydrophilicity and antifouling properties of the membranes. Subsequently, by optimizing the dope solution composition and coagulation bath temperature, PVDF/SMANa ultrafiltration membranes exhibited the pure water flux of 1014 L/m 2 h and the rejection to BSA of 98.9%. These results outperformed previously reported ones for similar PVDF composite membranes. Significantly, this strategy can be applied to the large-scale manufacture of membranes.

Enhanced hydrophilicity of a thermo-responsive PVDF/palygorskite-g-PNIPAAM hybrid ultrafiltration membrane via surface segregation induced by temperature

Jianjian Cai,Shouyong Zhou,Yijiang Zhao,Ailian Xue,Yan Zhang,Meisheng Li,Weihong Xing

The hydrophilicity of a thermo-responsive PVDF/palygorskite-g-PNIPAAM hybrid ultrafiltration membrane was enhanced via surface segregation induced by coagulation bath temperature (CBT). The N1s content of the hybrid ultrafiltration membranes prepared at 5 and 20 °C is 1.77% and 1.02%, respectively while that of the membrane prepared at 40 °C is just 0.73%. This indicated that the PNIPAAM chains could be dragged to the membrane surfaces or pores via surface segregation induced by temperature. This resulted in higher hydrophilicity and permeability as well as thermo-responsiveness for membranes prepared at lower temperatures. The initial water contact angle of the PVDF/palygorskite-g-PNIPAAM hybrid ultrafiltration membrane prepared at 5 and 20 °C is 75.2° and 75°, respectively, which is about 6° lower than the one prepared at 40 °C. A higher pure water flux (PWF) of about 366 L m−2 h−1 at 40 °C was obtained for the hybrid membrane prepared at 5 °C while the one prepared at 40 °C only reached 274 L m−2 h−1. Meanwhile, membranes prepared at low temperature exhibited fewer macrovoids, lower membrane thickness and larger elongation.

Preparation of re-entrant and anti-fouling PVDF composite membrane with omniphobicity for membrane distillation

Wei Zhang,Yubing Lu,Jun Liu,Xipeng Li,Baoan Li,Shichang Wang

Superhydrophobic and oleophobic membrane applied in membrane distillation was fabricated by constructing a re-entrant composite structure via immobilizing silica nanoparticles (NPs) on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The silica coated membrane with the assistance of polydopamine (PDA) was then fluorosilanized by means of a silane coupling agent 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane. A series of characterizations were implemented to investigate the effects of modification process on the structure and performance of the PVDF composite membranes . The fouling and wetting behaviors of original and modified membranes were explored by direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) tests using a mixed solution of inorganic salts, organic matter and surfactant as the feed. The results indicated that silica NPs and fluorinated silane were presented on the PVDF membrane substrate. After surface modification, the liquid entry pressure (LEP) increased by 120%, in addition, the water contact angle (WCA) increased from 127.0° to 169.0°, and the oil contact angle (OCA) increased from 2.8° to 112.1°. The modification process showed no effect on the pore size and pore structure . Furthermore, the composite membrane exhibited excellent chemical stability and prominent mechanical stability. The re-entrant structure resulting from nanoparticles and microspheres and the omniphobic feature were conferred on the composite membrane. The DCMD tests showed that the composite membrane kept a stable permeate flux in the long-term concentration experiment, with the salt rejection rate approximately 100%. What's more, the composite membrane did not suffer from fouling and wetting, and still dry and clean after the test. In comparison, the pristine membrane was seriously polluted during the test, and the permeate flux decreased to 28.3% of the initial value. Overall, the novel modified PVDF composite membrane reported in this work presents outstanding anti-fouling performances.

Preparation of Guanidine-Grafted NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/Polyvinylidene Fluoride Mixed Matrix Membranes for Adsorption of Pb2+ for Isopropanol Purification

Jingyu Cai,Junjie Shi,Jian Zhang,Xiaoyu Miao,Sen Wang,Longqiang Xiao,Dan Liu,Linxi Hou

Electronic-grade isopropyl alcohol is widely utilized in the cleaning of semiconductors and microelectronic components. Removing ions like Pb2+ is crucial since the presence of impurities may cause degradation of electronics, increased failure rates, and short circuits. Membrane materials offer a number of advantages in the field of adsorption separation; however, the lack of adsorption sites results in limited adsorption capacity. In the current work, guanidino-grafted NH2-MIL-101(Fe) was incorporated into polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to prepare MOF/PVDF mixed matrix membranes (NM/PVDF) for the removal of Pb2+ from isopropanol. Benefiting from the larger specific surface area and more lone electron pairs in the guanidine group, the Pb2+ adsorption capacity of the as-prepared NM/PVDF membrane was 29.4458 mg/g, which was higher than that of the NH2-MIL-101(Fe)/PVDF membrane (20.9306 mg/g) and the pure PVDF membrane (6.7324 mg/g). The NM/PVDF membrane was able to reduce the concentration of Pb2+ from 500 to 86.73 ppb. This work highlights the potential of guanidine-grafted Fe-based MOFs/PVDF membranes as adsorbents for acquisition of electronic-grade solvents.

Omniphobic membrane with nest-like re-entrant structure via electrospraying strategy for robust membrane distillation

Wei Zhang,Zhi Wang,Baoan Li

Omniphobic membranes have acquired some recognitions for alleviating the membrane wetting in the robust membrane distillation because of the super-repulsion towards different surface tension liquids. In this study, the Ti-CNFs/PVDF composite membrane with omniphobicity and high permeate flux was fabricated via electrospraying multilevel heat-conducting nanofibers on the PVDF membrane and fluorosilane treatment simultaneously with one-step strategy. In detail, carbon nanofibers decorated by TiO 2 with hydrothermal treatment were immobilized on the surface by the adhesive attraction of PDMS to establish the re-entrant structure. Meanwhile, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane was presented in the spraying liquid to gain the low surface energy for the surface. Additionally, the composite nanofibers played a role in mitigating the temperature polarization. A series of characterizations on membrane morphologies, wetting behaviors, structural peculiarities and stable properties were investigated systematically. The results showed that the re-entrant morphology consisted of the intersecting nanofibers was constructed skillfully, looking like the nest's hierarchical structure. The composite membrane displayed outstanding contact angles of 172.0 ± 1.8°, 170.5 ± 3.5°, 160.1 ± 2.6°, 165.0 ± 3.0°, 162.5 ± 4.5°, 151.0 ± 1.5°, 153.5 ± 3.5° and 118.0 ± 3.0° towards DI water , 3.5 wt% NaCl, 0.4 mM SDS , 0.4 mM CTAB, 0.4 mM Tween-20, ethanol, soybean milk and dodecane, respectively. The modified membrane presented a 167% LEP measurement of the pristine membrane and satisfactory chemical and thermal stabilities along with silver mirror phenomena. Furthermore, the omniphobic membrane exhibited anti-fouling and anti-wetting performances with high and stable permeate fluxes (36.3 kg/m 2 ·h) as well as a nearly 100% salt rejection rate in the consecutive DCMD tests, where HA and diverse surfactants were added to the brine feed. This suggests the omniphobic membrane as a promising alternative for wastewater treatment in membrane distillation.

The electrocaloric effect of PBZ/PVDF flexible composite film near room temperature

Qian Guoming,Zhu Kongjun,Li Xia,Yan Kang,Wang Jing,Liu Jinsong,Huang Weiqing

Pb 0.8 Ba 0.2 ZrO 3 (PBZ) nanofibers were prepared through electrospinning and mixed at a volume composite ratio of 0–6% with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) dissolved in an organic solvent, and the PBZ/PVDF composite film was prepared through casting. The nanocomposites with PBZ nanofibers of 3 vol% showed the best ferroelectric performance in this work, and the maximum polarization value and breakdown field strength were 9.69 μC/cm 2 and 420 MV/m, respectively. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss at a depolarization temperature of 285 K were 6.13 and 0.21, respectively. The performance of the electrocaloric effect was studied using the direct method near room temperature. Under 150 MV/m and − 30 °C, the △ T and Δ S of the composite film were 13.99 K and 52.70 J/kg K, respectively. When the temperature increased to 70 °C, △ T and Δ S become 5.08 K and 13.56 J/kg K, respectively. The simulation results and experiments indicate that the incorporation of nanofibers can increase the interface polarization with higher polarization value and improve the ferroelectric performance than pure PVDF.

Microstructure manipulation in PVDF/SMA/MWCNTs ultrafiltration membranes: Effects of hydrogen bonding and crystallization during the membrane formation

Xiao Wu,Dongdong Kang,Nan Liu,Huiju Shao,Xiaoliang Dong,Shuhao Qin

Amphiphilic copolymers and functionalized nanoparticles have been severally used to modify polymeric membranes to enhance their antifouling properties. However, their synergistic effects on the membrane microstructure and performance have been rarely reported. Herein, sodium styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMANa) and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes with carboxyl groups (MWCNT-COOH), amino groups (MWCNT-NH) and hydroxyl groups (MWCNT-OH) were utilized to blend with poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) to fabricate the composite membrane by phase inversion. The hydrogen bonding between functional groups and SMANa, and the nucleation of MWCNTs were systematically investigated during the membrane formation. The hydrogen bonding strength followed the tendency of MWCNT-COOH > MWCNT-NH > MWCNT-OH. For MWCNT-NH, weak hydrogen bonding resulted in its aggregation in the dope solution and some large pores on the membrane surface. The α-nucleation of MWCNT-OH mainly dominated the membrane microstructure instead of hydrogen bonding, leading to a dense surface skin layer. In contrast, uniform and suitable pore structures were constructed on the MWCNT-COOH modified membrane thanks to the strong hydrogen bonding. Correspondingly, the resultant membrane simultaneously exhibited a better permeate flux (1266.50 L/m 2 ·h·bar) and rejections to BSA (98.60%), Congo red (62.85%) and methyl blue (29.19%), and the highest flux recovery ratio (88.5%), indicating excellent antifouling properties.
