Nickel-rich layered cathodes (for example, NCM811) hold great promise for practical applications in high-energy density lithium-ion battery technology. However, a nickel-rich cathode has poor cyclic stability because of the structure degradation induced by repeated cycles and excessive formation of thick cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI) layers. Poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) is a typical binder used to form a positive electrode, which nevertheless lacks the functionality to suppress structure degradation and control CEI layer formation. A new concept is proposed in this work to use a multi-functional block copolymer of poly(ether imide)-block-poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PEI-b-PDMS; abbreviated as PEMS) as the binder for the nickel-rich cathode. Unlike the conventional PVDF binder, the PEMS binder is capable of inhibiting crack formation within the NCM811 particles to retard structure degradation over cycles because of its elastomeric feature. The PEMS binder also enables tuning the composition of the CEI layer and inhibits the formation of overly thick CEI layers because the carbonate solvent molecules are excluded from the solvation sheath by the PEMS binder. Enhanced electrolyte affinity is exhibited by the electrode with the PEMS binder as evidenced by the contact angle measurement. Improved carbon black dispersion within the electrode is achieved by the PEMS binder because the PEI aromatic chain has strong affinity toward the carbon black particles. Both the cycling and rate performance of the NCM811 cathode is improved with the PEMS binder compared to the PVDF binder. In detail, the capacity retention is increased from 63.9 to 80.6% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C (1 C = 205 mAh g–1) when the PVDF binder is replaced by the PEMS binder. The rate performance at current densities of 2 and 5 C is increased significantly due to enhanced electrochemical kinetics.

Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have emerged as a pivotal next-generation energy storage technology due to their exceptional theoretical energy density. Their development faces fundamental challenges from conventional poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binders, including high crystallinity, insufficient adhesion, and poor interfacial compatibility with electrode active materials. In this work, we developed a convenient one-pot strategy to enhance the performance of the traditional PVDF binder by using lignin-derived polyhydroxyurethane (PHU). The ultra-low-dosage (1 wt %) lignin-derived PHU-modified PVDF binder (LP1) effectively enhanced the flexible amorphous domains and interfacial adhesion, leading to significantly improved Li+ transport and cyclic stability. The electrode with LP1 binder exhibited a substantially higher Li+ diffusion coefficient of 3.47 × 10–14 cm2 s–1 than that of the PVDF binder (2.05 × 10–15 cm2 s–1). The LP1-based battery demonstrated a capacity retention of 93.8% after 400 cycles at 1C compared to the 82.5% of the PVDF-based battery. This work not only establishes a foundation for the application of lignin-derived binders but also provides important guidance for binder design toward next-generation binder systems in advanced LMBs.

To address the demands for heavy metal wastewater treatment and copper resource recycling, hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI) technology offers advantages of low energy consumption and ion selectivity. However, the practical application of HCDI is limited by the insufficient adsorption performance and stability of electrode materials. In this study, flower-like copper sulfide (CuS) was synthesized via a hydrothermal method and used as CDI electrodes, with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinyl butyral/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVB/PVP) as binders. The effects of the two binders on electrode structure and performance were investigated, focusing on elucidating the selective adsorption mechanism of CuS as an HCDI cathode. The CuS-PVDF electrodes exhibited superior conductivity and higher Cu 2+ adsorption capacity (551.49 mg·g −1 at 1.0 V), attributed to the polar stabilization effect of rigid molecular chains and low surface energy of PVDF, which facilitated efficient utilization of CuS active sites. In contrast, the PVB-PVP binder caused shielding of active sites on CuS, and delayed charge transport due to encapsulation by flexible polymer chains. Moreover, the CuS electrodes exhibited selective adsorption of Cu 2+ in the HCDI system. The selectivity of Cu 2+ exceeded 70 % in a mixture of multiple heavy metal ions. This selective mechanism can be attributed to pK sp (CuS) = 40.3 and redox-mediated phase transformation (CuS→Cu 2 S/Cu 2 O/Cu).

Developing robust, flexible electrodes with excellent high-rate electrochemical performance is crucial for advanced wearable supercapacitors, yet it remains challenging due to the trade-off between ion-transport capability and the mechanical properties of electrodes. Here, we report a mechanically robust, flexible, 200-μm-thick activated carbon (AC)-based electrode with excellent electrochemical performance, fabricated via a thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) strategy. By generating interconnected porous structures in a multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-reinforced PVDF binder during the TIPS process, we obtained an AC-based electrode with both electrochemically and mechanically enhanced performance. The resulting thick electrode demonstrates outstanding high-rate capabilities in both ionic liquids and solid gel electrolytes. An assembled flexible all-solid-state supercapacitor exhibits remarkably stable power output under bending conditions. The TIPS process is compatible with the industrial slurry-casting method for electrode fabrication, showing high potential for large-scale applications.

Despite showing low cost, inherent safety, and high suitability, the rechargeable Zn–I2 aqueous batteries are still seriously suffering from self-discharge and energy density issues stemming from I2 dissolution, polyiodide shuttling, and low I2 mass loading. Herein, we develop a novel polyquaternium-10 (P10, a cationic cellulose)-based binding system to simultaneously circumvent these issues. The water-borne P10 binder can suppress I2 dissolution and polyiodide shuttling by not only adsorbing polyiodides via its quaternary ammonium groups and oxygen heteroatoms but also eliminating the use of toxic, expensive, and I2-dissolving organic solvents (e.g., N-methylpyrrolidone, NMP), enabling a facile and green cathode-fabricating process. More importantly, the P10 binder is conducive to the preparation of thick cathode coatings with high I2 mass loadings, thanks to its high elasticity and mechanical toughness after swelling by the electrolyte. As a result, Zn–I2 batteries prepared with the P10 binder demonstrate much better anti-self-discharge performance than those prepared with conventional PVDF binders (capacity retention: 84 vs 63% after 200 h of open-circuit storage). Even at an ultrahigh I2 mass loading of 14.5 mg cm–2, the batteries can still deliver significant specific capacity (216 mAh g–1) and cyclability (96.8% capacity remained after 385 cycles). This binder should be highly compatible with other performance-improving strategies, providing a green yet affordable approach for the construction of high-performance Zn–I2 aqueous batteries.

Semi-solid electrolytes tend to inherit the advantages of both solid-state electrolytes and liquid electrolytes. However, the challenge is to simultaneously enhance both ionic conductivity, transference number and long cycle performance of batteries. In this study, a semi-solid electrolyte was successfully synthesized with a hollow structured metal organic framework (HMOF) and a polymer binder (PVDF). The hollow structure of HMOF serves as a framework to encapsulate a large amount of lithium salt and electrolyte, reducing concentration polarization in lithium metal batteries. Its unique pore structure and abundant hydroxyl functional groups can restrict anion movement, thereby increasing the Li-ion transference number. On the other hand, the PVDF acts as a binder, making the electrolyte thinner, more flexible, and easier to process for broader applications. Furthermore, a Li@HMOF semi-solid electrolyte (LHMSSE) was fabricated by adding Bis (trifluoromethane) sulfonimide lithium salt (LiTFSI) into the HMOF(Li@HMOF), which exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 0.89 mS cm −1 at 30 °C and a high Li-ion transference number of 0.75 at 30 °C. Notably, the Lithium symmetric battery of Li||LHMSSE ||Li can operate stably for over 1200 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm −2 , and the lithium metal full battery of Li||LHMSSE||LFP (LiFePO 4 ) retains a capacity of 127.7 mAh g −1 after 2000 cycles at 1C, with a capacity retention rate of 89.1 % and an average coulombic efficiency of 99.9 %. When paired with high-load LFP (10 mg cm −2 ) or NCM811 (LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 ) (10 mg cm −2 ) cathodes, a stable cycling performance can be achieved at a rate of 0.2C.

A new binder, poly(2-propenoic acid, 2-methyl-, 3-[(2-aminoethyl) amino]-2-hydroxypropyl ester) (P-HAEAPMA), is synthesized and applied to silicon/graphite (Si/graphite) anodes in lithium-ion batteries. The Si/graphite anode with the binder exhibits good electrochemical stability. Furthermore, the materials on the discarded Si/graphite/P-HAEAPMA electrode can be recycled for use based on water because the P-HAEAPMA binder is easily soluble in water. The discharge capacity and capacity retention rate of the electrode with reused materials are slightly lower than those of the original Si/graphite/P-HAEAPMA electrode. The binder is rich in polar amino and hydroxyl groups, which not only helps to form strong adhesion between the electrode active material and copper foil but also promotes the transport of Li ions. The electrochemical performance of the electrode with the P-HAEAPMA binder is significantly enhanced compared with that of the electrode with the traditional PVDF binder or water-based LA133 binder. After 305 cycles, a specific capacity of 485.0 mA h g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 74.8% are achieved for the Si/graphite/P-HAEAPMA electrode.
