Study on the Gas-Chromic Character of Pd/TiO2 for Fast Room-Temperature CO Detection

Xinbao Li,Kai Sun,Ying Chen,Ye Yuan

As a widely used support, TiO2has often been combined with Pd to form highly sensitive gas-chromic materials. Herein, we prepared a series of Pd/TiO2catalysts with different Pd content (from 0.1 to 5 wt.%) by the impregnation method for their utilization in fast room-temperature CO detection. The detection was simply based on visible color change when the Pd/TiO2was exposed to CO. The sample with 1 wt.% Pd/TiO2presented an excellent CO gasochromic character, associated with a maximum chromatic aberration value of 90 before and after CO exposure. Systematic catalyst characterizations of XPS, FT-IR, CO-TPD, and N2adsorption–desorption and density functional theory calculations for the CO adsorption and charge transfer over the Pd and PdO surfaces were further carried out. It was found that the interaction between CO and the Pd surface was strong, associated with a large adsorption energy of −1.99 eV and charge transfer of 0.196e. The color change was caused by a reduction in Pd2+to metallic Pd0over the Pd/TiO2surface after CO exposure.

Unveiling the intermediates/pathways towards photocatalytic dechlorination of 3,3′,4,4′-trtrachlorobiphenyl over Pd /TiO2(B) nanosheets

Wei Guo,Yao Qin,Cheng Liu,Binbin Guo,Junhua Zou,Zenghong Xie,Ling Wu

This work reports the rapid and effective photocatalytic dechlorination of 3,3′,4,4′-trtrachlorobiphenyl (PCB77) with highly dispersed Pd nanoclusters loaded two-dimensional (2D) TiO 2 (B) nanosheets (Pd/TiO 2 (B)) under visible light irradiation, achieving a dechlorination efficiency of 100 % with H 2 O used as an H-donor source. The ultra-thin TiO 2 (B) nanosheets provide a good platform for studying the dechlorination intermediates/pathways of PCB77 at the molecular level. It is proved that the dechlorination of PCB77 is a stepwise process, in which chlorines at the para positions are much more susceptible than those at the meta positions due to the activation of the C Cl bond in the presence of Pd nanoclusters. Furthermore, in-situ FTIR results of D 2 O absorption suggest that the TiO 2 (B) nanosheets with abundant surface defects greatly promote the activation of water molecules via the formation of surficial complexes by hydrogen bonds. Finally, a synergistic mechanism is proposed for photocatalytic dechlorination of PCB77 over Pd/TiO 2 (B). The study provides an efficient method for complete dechlorination of PCB77 and an in-depth understanding photocatalyzed dechlorination reaction mechanism at the molecular level, which may extend to other photocatalytic dehalogenation reactions of halogenated pollutants.

Light-Driven Hydrogenation of Bicarbonate into Formate over Nano-Pd/TiO2

Binbin Jin,Xin Ye,Heng Zhong,Fangming Jin

Efficient conversion of CO2/bicarbonate into chemicals using solar energy as driving force is meaningful to alleviate global warming caused by excessive CO2 emission. In this work, a direct light-driven method of bicarbonate hydrogenation into formate over a nanocatalyst Pd/TiO2 is proposed. Formic acid has recently attracted increasing attention as a promising hydrogen storage carrier. By using the Pd/TiO2, the reaction system achieved a self-heating effect under irradiation, promoting the hydrogenation of bicarbonate. Owing to its extraordinary photothermal conversion ability and efficient light utilization, the 5 wt % Pd/TiO2 exhibited a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 30.9% under experimental illumination. The desirable performance of the Pd/TiO2 catalyst for hydrogenation of bicarbonate is attributed to the elevated temperature from the localized surface plasmon resonance effect of nano-Pd and the direct participation of photogenerated carriers in hydrogenation of bicarbonate. This study combined the merits of photocatalysis and thermocatalysis, providing a promising method for light-driven conversion of CO2 using the photothermal synergistic effect.

Insights into the surface Structure-Sensitive photocatalytic oxidation of gaseous toluene on Pd/TiO2 catalysts

Cong Wu,Qinglong Liu,Yu Zhan,Wei Tan,Xiaoqian Wei,Qing Tong,Haiqin Wan,Lin Dong

Indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs), represented by toluene, can pose a serious threat to human health. In this work, a series of Pd/TiO 2 catalysts with different surface structures ( i.e. , dispersion/valence of Pd species, surface Ti 3+ /oxygen defect concentration and Pd-TiO 2 interactions, etc. ) was constructed by various methods. It was found that the Pd/TiO 2 catalyst prepared by one-step reduction of NaBH 4 method (Pd/TiO 2 -N) with metallic Pd particles possessed more surface Ti 3+ /oxygen defects and stronger Pd-TiO 2 interaction than Pd/TiO 2 catalysts prepared by ethylene glycol reduction loading method (Pd/TiO 2 -E) and incipient wetness impregnation method (Pd/TiO 2 -I). Further photochemical characterizations and reaction mechanism study revealed that the relatively higher concentration of Pd 0 species on Pd particles, stronger Pd-TiO 2 interaction, and more surface Ti 3+ /oxygen defects on Pd/TiO 2 -N could facilitate the generation of more reactive oxygen species (ROS) under light irradiation. The partial oxidation of toluene to benzyl alcohol/benzaldehyde/benzoic acid and the subsequent ring-opening process were found to be highly determined by the valence states of Pd particles and the concentration of surface Ti 3+ /oxygen defects. This work provides instructive insights into the construction of highly efficient Pd/TiO 2 catalysts for the removal of indoor VOCs.

Simultaneous removal of bisphenol A and Cr(Ⅵ) by Pd–TiO2: Significantly improve the photocatalytic activity through synergistic effect

Yinghua Lan,Xuejing Wang,Yanmei Chen,Juan Xu,Yanhui Zhang

The synergistic effect of heavy metal ions and organic pollutants can enhance the photocatalytic performance and provides a new idea for environmental governance, so it has important research value. In this work, we prepared Pd–TiO 2 composites by ascorbic acid reduction method, and obtained the crystal structure, morphology and surface state information of the composites through a series of characterizations, which verified the successful preparation of the composites. It was used for simultaneous photocatalytic removal of bisphenol A (BPA) and Cr(Ⅵ), and it was found that the photocatalytic removal efficiency was significantly improved compared to their individual removal. This can be attributed to the synergistic effect between BPA and Cr(Ⅵ), where they enhance the separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and prolong the lifetime of photogenerated carriers. In addition, the effects of BPA concentration and Cr(Ⅵ) concentration on photocatalytic removal efficiency were also investigated. The mechanism of photocatalytic degradation of BPA by Cr(Ⅵ) coupling system was discussed by changing the experimental conditions, it is proved that the photocatalytic products of BPA can improve the removal efficiency of Cr(Ⅵ).

Atmospheric Discharge Plasma Enhanced Preparation of Pd/TiO2 Catalysts for Acetylene Selective Hydrogenation

Guo Zhanglong,Huang Qingsong,Luo Shizhong,Chu Wei

A series of Pd/TiO 2 catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method followed by atmospheric discharge plasma treatment. In order to study the influences of plasma treatment on the catalysts, the samples were characterized by XRD, TPR, TPD, XPS and TEM technologies. It was found that the plasma treatment catalysts possessed a higher acetylene conversion and ethylene selectivity compared to those of the untreated sample. The enhanced performance of the plasma treated catalyst was mainly dependent on two main effects. On one hand, the treated catalyst possessed a higher metal Pd dispersion, which resulted in the easier activation of acetylene. On the other hand, the surface electron density of metal Pd on the treated catalyst got enhanced compared to that of untreated sample, because of the stronger interaction between TiO 2 support and metallic Pd, helping the more desorption of ethylene species from the surface of catalyst.

Synergistic photocatalytic-photothermal contribution induced by Pd-TiO2/PEDOT immobilized in PVDF membrane for enhanced water purification

Yacong Yang,Zhihao Cao,Tianhan Shen,Junyang Zhang,Zuofei Gu,Mingwan Zhao,Zongli Xie,Yingchun Miao,Yuning Huo,Hexing Li

The photocatalytic membrane systems show great potential for water purification and wastewater treatment with efficient energy utilization. Herein, we develop a synergistic photocatalytic-photothermal route, based on Pd-TiO 2 /PEDOT composite immobilized in PVDF membrane, for effective water permeability and reutilization property. Novel Pd-TiO 2 /PEDOT/PVDF ultrafiltration membrane is prepared by the phase inversion method with immobilizing Pd-TiO 2 /PEDOT obtained by ultrasonic irradiation. During the removal of HA under light irradiation, Pd-TiO 2 /PEDOT/PVDF membrane presents an unexpected increasing in water flux, when compared to pristine PVDF, Pd-TiO 2 /PVDF and PEDOT/PVDF membranes, with the highest normalized flux reaches up to 2.1 and remains as 1.3 even after 300 min of irradiation. This significantly enhances the water transport, along with the achieved high rejection and anti-fouling performance. It can be attributed to synergistic photocatalytic-photothermal effect of Pd-TiO 2 /PEDOT, which is realized by their strong interaction and uniform distribution. The addition of PEDOT promotes photocatalytic effect of Pd-TiO 2 by enhancing separation of photo-induced charges. High photothermal conversion efficiency of Pd-TiO 2 /PEDOT and low temperature difference in Pd-TiO 2 /PEDOT/PVDF membrane facilitate effective thermal storage, beneficial for water transport. Meanwhile, thermal energy promotes generation of more ∙OH and ∙O 2 – radicals to remove pollutants. Synergistic photocatalytic-photothermal contribution in Pd-TiO 2 /PEDOT/PVDF membrane shows significant potential for practical application.

Type II/Schottky heterojunctions-triggered multi-channels charge transfer in Pd-TiO2-Cu2O hybrid promotes photocatalytic hydrogen production

Xiao Liu,Yanjun Zhang,Wuxia Zhang,Gang Cheng,Fan Tian,Wei Li,Jinyan Xiong

Rapid charge recombination, limited light response, and slow surface reactions were observed in the photocatalysts, thereby limiting their future-oriented applications in photocatalytic hydrogen production through water splitting. Constructing a multi-channel charge separation photocatalysis system could solve those questions. In this study, Pd-TiO 2 -Cu 2 O composites were successfully accomplished via a facile chemical reduction method. The Pd-TiO 2 -Cu 2 O composite exhibited improved photocatalytic hydrogen production (13069.7 μmol g −1 h −1 ), which was over 6 times as much as that of pure TiO 2 . Based on the photo/electrochemical measurements, it was proposed that a Type II heterojunction was formed at the TiO 2 -Cu 2 O interface under light irradiation, and concurrently, a Schottky barrier was established between Pd and TiO 2 . Accordingly, the Type II heterojunction-created built-in electric field would facilitate the separation of photogenerated charges. Simultaneously, the introduction of Pd accelerates the accumulation of electrons and further enhances the charge transfer rate. The combination of such a Type II heterojunction and Schottky junction synergistically created a multi-channel charge separation system, optimizing surface reactions and thus improving photocatalytic efficiency. This work provided a rational approach for building efficient multi-component photocatalysis systems featuring Type II heterojunction/Schottky junction for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Synthesis of Pd/TiO2–C composite catalysts and investigation of its performance for the electrooxidation of formic acid

Hansheng Wan,Qizhi Dong,Guiming Zhu,Gang Yu,Tianwu Yin,Meiling Huang

In this work, anatase-TiO 2 is investigated as a catalyst support in Pd/TiO 2 –C composite to improve the electrocatalytic properties of Pd for formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). Pd/TiO 2 has been synthesized by an impregnation-reduction method and then mixed with Vulcan XC-72R carbon black to obtain Pd/TiO 2 –C composite. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images show Pd nanoparticles (ca.3.5 nm in average diameter) in the Pd/TiO 2 –C (1:1) composite catalyst were dispersed on the surface of TiO 2 with a narrow particle size distribution . Electrochemical tests demonstrate Pd/TiO 2 –C (1:1) composite has significantly increased catalytic activity and stability compared with Pd/C for FAOR. The proposed reasons for these observations are the excellent acid corrosion and oxidation resistance of TiO 2 and the synergistic effect of Pd and TiO 2 nanoparticles . The effect of mass ratios of TiO 2 to C on the catalytic performance is also discussed. The best catalytic activity and stability for FAOR is found when the mass ratio of TiO 2 to C is 1:1. It can be interpreted as the synergistic effects and conductivity reach balance at this point.

Pd-TiO2 Schottky heterojunction catalyst boost the electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination reaction

Kaifeng Wang,Song Shu,Min Chen,Junxi Li,Kai Zhou,Jian Pan,Xialing Wang,Xiangjun Li,Jianping Sheng,Fan Dong,Guangming Jiang

Electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (EHDC) provides one promising solution to mitigate challenges from the water pollutions by persistent chlorinated organics. Palladium (Pd) has shown appealing properties as EHDC catalysts, while the low earth abundance has urged us to raise its activity and minimize usage. Herein, one novel semiconductor-metal Pd-TiO 2 Schottky heterojunction catalyst was developed, which notably outperformed the conventional Pd-C catalyst in mass activity, dechlorination degree and energy selectivity towards EHDC of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in water. A combined experimental and DFT calculation study on mechanism revealed that the primary product phenol had a considerable negative effect on EHDC by competing the active sites with 2,4-DCP. The enhanced performance of Pd-TiO 2 originated from the Schottky heterojunction-induced metal-support interactions, which optimized the Pd electronic structure and balanced the 2,4-DCP adsorption and phenol desorption on Pd. This study highlights one novel strategy to boost the metal performance in electrocatalytic hydrogenation reactions.

Synthesis of heterostructured Pd@TiO2/TiOF2 nanohybrids with enhanced photocatalytic performance

Xixia Zhao,Guijuan Wei,Junxue Liu,Zhaojie Wang,Changhua An,Jun Zhang

TiO 2 /TiOF 2 heterostructured nanocomposites has been synthesized through a solvothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms, UV–vis and photo-luminescent spectroscopy. It was found that, compared with single TiOF 2 or TiO 2 , the as-prepared TiO 2 /TiOF 2 nanocomposites exhibited superior photoactivity towards the degradation of organic pollutants, i.e . rhodamine B and solar hydrogen evolution. The results are in accordance with the prohibition of photogenerated electrons and holes recombination in these two samples under light illumination. The photocatalytic activity can be further boosted by introducing Pd nanoparticles onto the surfaces of TiO 2 /TiOF 2 through a simple deposition method without using any stabilizers, which is probably attributed to the enhanced visible-light absorption as well as the facilitated charge-carrier separation after the introduction of Pd nanoparticles. The synergistic effect between TiOF 2 and TiO 2 was discussed and was responsible for the enhancement of their activity in comparison with single counterpart.

Photothermal dependence on catalytic activity and selectivity of HMF and benzyl alcohol oxidation over Pd/1D-TiO2 nanotubes

Likai Dai,Zheng Fang,Anxian Peng,Yunhong Chen,Yitong Liu,Huimei Chen,Rongjun Yan,Rencheng Zhou,Mingming Du

BACKGROUND Photothermal catalytic oxidation technology for synthesis of high value-added chemicals has become a hot topic of research at home and abroad. As a special structure, titania (TiO 2 ) nanotubes (Ti-NTs) possess larger specific surface area and adsorption capacity, which have shown great application prospects in photothermal catalytic oxidation. RESULTS In this work, high-performance palladium (Pd-Ti-NTs catalyst were prepared and applied to the photothermal catalytic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethyl (HMF) and benzyl alcohol. The photothermal dependence on catalytic activity and selectivity of HMF and benzyl alcohol oxidation was studied in detail. The results revealed that compared with thermal catalytic oxidation, the catalysts showed significantly higher conversions of both benzyl alcohol and HMF under light. in particular, HMF conversion increase from 55.6% to 99.7%. Aldehyde oxidation is inhibited by alcohol and can be dramatically promoted by light radiation. This is probably because alcohol can inhibit the adsorption of aldehyde, and this inhibiting effect is weakened through light radiation, thus promoting the oxidation of aldehydes. Therefore, the selectivity of the final products 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and benzoic acid were dramatically increased in both systems under light radiation, and the selectivity for FDCA was obviously increased from 5.8% to 61.3%, and the yield reached 61.0%, which is higher than that of most of the reported Pd-TiO 2 -based catalysts for FDCA. CONCLUSIONS In this paper, we verify that Pd-Ti-NTs could preferentially promote the conversion of aldehydes to acids in the presence of light, and obtained catalysts with high catalytic performance and high stability for benzyl alcohol and HMF oxidation. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry (SCI).
