Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au 50 Pd 50 , Au 60 Pd 40 and Au 66 Pd 34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au 66 Pd 34 @Pt, Au 60 Pd 40 @Pt and Au 50 Pd 50 @Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au 75 Pd 25 @Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au 60 Pd 40 @Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C.

We designed an amplified detection strategy for the sensitive determination of lead ions (Pb 2+ ) based on a target-triggered nuclear acid cleavage of Pb 2+ -specific DNAzyme as a selectivity interface combined with Pd-Pt alloys modified Fe-MOFs (Fe-MOFs/PdPt NPs) hybrids acting as the signal tag. Streptavidin modified reduced graphene oxide-tetraethylene pentamine-gold nanoparticles (rGO-TEPA-Au) served as a sensor platform for immobilizing more DNAzyme. In the presence of Pb 2+ , the substrate DNA strand can be specifically cleaved at the ribonucleotide site by DNAzyme to produce a new single-DNA on the interface. Then, the hairpin DNA with hybrid strand matched by its complement to the single-DNA was employed to modify the Fe-MOFs/PdPt NPs bioconjugates for signal amplification . Fe-MOFs/PdPt NPs catalyze hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to produce the electrochemical signal which was recorded by chronoamperometry . Benefiting from the Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme, the proposed method can selectively detect Pb 2+ in the presence of other metal ions . The newly designed biosensor exhibited a good linear relationship ranging from 0.005 to 1000 nmol L −1 with a low detection limit of 2 pM (S/N = 3) for Pb 2+ . This Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme based ultrasensitive biosensor showed high sensitivity and selectivity, providing potential application for Pb 2+ detection in naturally contaminated sewage and spiked drinking water samples.

Bimetallic nanocrystals (NCs) have obtained significant attention due to their unique advantages of the intrinsic properties of individual metals and synergistic enhancements resulting from the electronic coupling between two constituent metals. In this work, Pd@Pt core–shell NCs were prepared through a facile one-pot solution-phase method, which had excellent dispersion and uniform size. Concurrently, ZnO nanosheets were prepared via a hydrothermal method. To explore their potential in nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas sensing applications, sensitive materials based on ZnO nanosheets with varying mass percentages of Pd@Pt NCs were generated through an impregnation process. The sensor based on 0.3 wt % Pd@Pt-ZnO exhibited remarkable performance, demonstrating a substantial response (Rg/Ra = 60.3) to 50 ppb of NO2 at a low operating temperature of 80 °C. Notably, this sensor reached an outstanding low detection limit of 300 ppt. The enhancement in gas sensing capabilities can be attributed to the sensitization and synergistic effects imparted by the exceptional catalytic activity of Pd@Pt NCs, which significantly promoted the reaction. This research introduces a novel approach for the utilization of core–shell structured bimetallic nanocrystals as modifiers in metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) materials for NO2 detection.

Infections resulting from bacteria resistant to antibiotics represent a significant risk to human health. Therefore, exploring novel and effective antibacterial treatment strategies as substitutes for traditional antibiotics is essential. Here, we developed heterogeneous bimetallic Pd@Pt Cubes with a core-shell structure for near-infrared light-enhanced bacterial infection treatment. Heterogeneous core-shell bimetallic Pd@Pt nanocubes demonstrated remarkable photothermal properties along with peroxidase-mimic activity, promoting the combined interaction between photothermal antibacterial therapy (PTT) and chemodynamic therapy (CDT). As demonstrated in vitro antibacterial tests, Pd@Pt Cubes can effectively eliminate both E. coli and S. aureus , and enhance drug penetration in biofilm by disrupting the biofilm. Furthermore, in vivo antibacterial tests indicated that Pd@Pt Cubes can significantly enhance the repair of tissues in bacterial infection sites. Overall, this study constructed an efficient and multifunctional antibacterial nanoplatform through a rational combination and design, and achieved PTT/CDT bimodal bacterial infection treatment through multiple enhancement strategies.

The electrochemical hydrogenation (ECH) of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-dihydroxymethylfuran (DHMF) represents a pivotal pathway for the electrocatalytic upgrading of biomass-based organic small molecules, offering significant reductions in energy consumption while producing value-added chemicals. The conversion of HMF to DHMF is challenging due to the high reduction potential and complex intermediates of HMF ECH under neutral environment. Also, the total efficiency is hindered by sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. Herein, we report a synthesis of highly alloyed Pd-Pt bimetallene (Pd 3 Pt 1 BML) for HMF ECH coupled with formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). Through a combination of in-situ Raman spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, and theoretical calculations, we elucidate that the HMF adsorption on Pd atoms, strategically separated by Pt atoms, is weakened compared to pure Pd surfaces. Additionally, Pt atoms serve as crucial providers of active hydrogen to neighboring Pd atoms, synergistically enhancing the reaction kinetics of HMF conversion with a Faradaic efficiency >93%. Meanwhile, the atomically dispersed Pt atoms endow Pd 3 Pt 1 BML with high electrochemical performance for the direct pathway of FAOR at the anode. As a result, a FAOR-assisted HMF ECH system equipped with bifunctional Pd 3 Pt 1 BML achieves the energy-efficient conversion of HMF to DHMF at electrolysis voltage of 0.72 V at 10 mA cm –2 . This work provides insights into the rational design of bifunctional catalysts featuring two distinct types of active sites for advanced energy electrocatalysis and ECH.

Recently, the nanozyme Pd@Pt has garnered attention due to its notable specific surface area and superior enzyme-like catalytic activity, leading to extensive examination and application in previous studies. However, the comprehensive impact of Pd@Pt nanozyme on treating metabolic disorders, such as diabetes and its associated conditions, remains largely unexplored. This research aimed to clarify how Pd@Pt influences metabolic balance at both the transcriptome and microbiome levels and to explore the interactions between microbiota and genes. We conducted an examination of mice subjected to a high-fat diet (HFD) following treatment with Pd@Pt. Transcriptome analysis was performed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs), and microbiome analysis was conducted to identify significant bacterial correlations associated with Pd@Pt exposure. The results indicated enhancements in glucose metabolism dysfunctions in the treated mice. Transcriptome analysis revealed that DEGs after Pd@Pt administration were enriched in the PI3K-Akt, NF-κB, and MAPK signaling pathways in the liver. Microbiome analysis identified four significant bacteria that exhibited a strong negative correlation with Pd@Pt exposure, while ten bacteria showed a positive correlation. Furthermore, a correlation network established among the gut microbiota, metabolites, and DEGs demonstrated a robust association. This research enhances our understanding of the mechanisms by which Pd@Pt affects the regulation of metabolic diseases in HFD-exposed environments and proposes a novel strategy for utilizing nanozymes in human health management.

Nowadays, the rational design of high-performance catalysts with desirable resistance to metal leaching has become the principal challenge in the hydrogenation of nitrile butadiene rubber. In the present work, the Pd-Pt bimetallic alloy nanocatalyst exhibits an outstanding hydrogenation degree of 99.0%, obviously higher than that of the conventional monometallic Pd/SiO 2 catalyst with the same Pd content (92.9%), accompanied by approximately 100% selectivity to C=C bonds. The results reveal that electron transfer from Pt to Pd confirms that the Pd species are in a rich-electron state, which boosts hydrogen activation and improves catalytic activity. Additionally, the incorporation of inactive Pt species promotes the formation of uniformly dispersed Pd-Pt alloy nanoparticles. The incorporation of inactive Pt species can enhance the metal-support interaction, reducing the residual metal content in hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber. The current research demonstrates a simple procedure for designing efficient bimetallic catalysts for the hydrogenation of unsaturated elastomer.

Developing electrocatalysts with high-Pt-utilization efficiency and appropriate surface oxygen affinity through a facile and scalable route is urgently needed for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, SPD-annealing strategy is demonstrated to prepare ordered low-Pt-loading Pd–Pt–Fe nanoalloys with an average particle size of less than 5 nm and excellent electrocatalytic performance. Furthermore, the ORR performances of Pd–Pt–Fe/C nanoalloy catalysts are rationally modified by means of both precise composition control and structural transformation. With an optimal component proportion, the prepared Pd 0 . 75 Pt 0 . 25 Fe/C catalyst exhibits the most excellent intrinsic activity due to the synergistic interaction of lattice strain and ligand effect. Benefiting from the compressive strain effect induced by the relatively tight arrangement of the ordered structure, the adsorption energy of the intermediate oxygen-containing species is effectively weakened, enabling the Pd 0 . 75 Pt 0 . 25 Fe/C to obtain enhanced ORR catalytic performance in acidic condition. Notably, compared with the disordered Pd 0 . 75 Pt 0 . 25 Fe/C, the ordered Pd 0 . 75 Pt 0 . 25 Fe/C shows an extremely superior stability of 98.5% mass activity retention after 10 000 cycles. This work could provide a facile and versatile approach to constructing the ordered low-platinum electrocatalysts with enhanced ORR properties.

Catalytic combustion has been identified as one of the most efficient and economically feasible routes for removing volatile organic compounds. In this work, supported noble-metal (Pd and Pt) catalysts for catalytic combustion of toluene were prepared by an improved incipient wetness impregnation method. Controlled amounts of oleic acid (OA) were introduced into the aqueous solution of metal salts in this new preparation method, which improved Pd and Pt dispersion remarkably on SiO 2 , as confirmed by XRD and TEM. XPS results showed that introduction of OA in the catalyst preparation resulted in increased proportion of metallic palladium. All of the activities in catalysts with OA were much higher than those of the catalysts without OA in the same catalyst system. Among the catalysts prepared, the 0.25%Pd-0.25%Pt/SiO 2 –OA catalyst exhibited the best catalytic activity for toluene oxidation, and the T 98 of toluene was only 160 °C under the conditions of toluene concentration at 1000 ppm and SV at 60,000 mL/(g h). Furthermore, the 0.25%Pd-0.25%Pt/SiO 2 –OA catalyst maintained high catalytic activity in the active stability test at 160 °C, and the result of TG indicated that no coke was formed on the spent catalyst.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are one of the main pollutants produced in industrial processes. Catalytic oxidation is an effective method to eliminate VOCs, and the key lies in designing efficient metal catalyst. In this work, Pd-Pt/SiO 2 bimetallic catalysts were designed and prepared by the immobilization method, and their performances for toluene oxidation were evaluated. The addition of Pt into the catalyst elevated markedly the reduction of Pd active sites, leading to abundant electron-deficient Pd 0 and electron-rich Pt 0 in the Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst, which were confirmed by TEM, CO pulse adsorption and in-situ XPS. As revealed by O 2 -TPD and toluene-TPD characterization, the cooperative effect of electron-deficient Pd 0 and electron-rich Pt 0 in Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst facilitated the activation of O 2 and toluene, thus enhanced greatly its activity. A conversion of 90% (T 90 ) for toluene was achieved over Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst at 165 ℃, and the apparent activation energy ( E a ) over Pd 2 Pt 1 catalyst was lower than that over other Pd-Pt bimetallic and monometallic Pd or Pt catalysts. Additionally, the reaction mechanism was studied by In - situ DRIFTS, the results showed that the toluene oxidation passed successively benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid and maleic anhydride , then maleic anhydride was further oxidized to CO 2 and water.

Binary Pd/In 2 O 3 and Pt/In 2 O 3 catalysts exhibit technological potential in CO 2 methanol synthesis. However, the key to achieving high productivity lies in resolving the unfavorable Pd-In alloy and Pt nanoparticles formation during the reaction. In this study, we present the surface restructuring of Pd-Pt/In 2 O 3 catalysts under CO 2 hydrogenation conditions. Detailed quasi-operando characterization and theory calculation reveal stable reconstruction driven by Pt with Pd. The bimetallic Pd-Pt inhibits the formation of both Pd-In alloy and Pt nanoparticles. Moreover, this restructuring process generates more oxygen vacancies during the reaction. These oxygen vacancies promote electron transfer from the indium oxide surface to the Pd-Pt clusters. Consequently, a shift occurs from interface-induced CO 2 adsorption to cluster-induced adsorption. Thereby, the STY of methanol on Pd-Pt/In 2 O 3 at 300 °C increased by approximately 20 % compared to that on Pd/In 2 O 3 along. The findings highlight the crucial role of component-induced restructuring and oxygen vacancies in influencing the change of adsorption sites.

Multimetallic plasmonic nanostructures, with appropriate morphology, elemental proportions and sizes, can be used to accelerate photocatalytic reactions. Here, we designed zigzag trimetallic nanostructures with the Au core and Pd–Pt alloy shell, whose catalytic ability was boosted by the synergistic effect of the plasmonic metal and catalytic metal. The catalytic rate of Au@PdPt nanoparticle (NP) with no light have a significant improvement, attributed to the larger contact area provided by the zigzag alloy shell. Furthermore, the enhanced catalytic activity in the presence of light is primarily due to the thermo-photo catalytic effect of plasmonic Au. The adding ratios of Pd:Pt were adjusted from 1:4 to 4:1, and we found that, when adding the Pd:Pt of 1:1, the zigzag Au@PdPt nanoparticle (NP) exhibited a superior reaction rate in the reduction methylene blue (MB) under light illumination. The rate is 8 times higher than that of Au@Pt, and the reduction conversion reached 100%. And it has a favorable plasmon enhancement factor with an appropriate shell thickness and get the balance between the catalytic performance and economic effects. This structure driven by capability-oriented design principles and holds the potential for applications in the field of catalysis. Graphical abstract
