Three-way catalysis represents a pivotal technology for converting automobile exhaust pollutants into non-toxic gases. Substituting some noble metals with transition metals is considered a promising way to reduce catalyst costs. Herein, we have investigated the catalytic potential of different configurations of Pd-Cu catalysts prepared by impregnation (PdCu/MA), sol-gel (PdCu-MA), impregnation with physical mixing (Pd/Cu/MA) and sol-gel with physical mixing (Pd/Cu-MA) to modify the interaction of Pd/Cu and MgAl1.82Ce0.18O4 (MA) spinel in this comparative study. The different structures in these catalysts lead to different catalytic performances. PdCu/MA exhibits the best three-way catalytic performance, which owe to the small-sized PdCu particles with high Pd2+ content (45.3%) and optimal interaction of Pd/Cu particles and MgAl1.82Ce0.18O4 support. Furthermore, comprehensive CO-DRIFTS, H2-TPR, and O2-TPD analyses discover that the metal-support interaction is beneficial to enhance the catalytic performance in three-way catalysis. Overall, we demonstrated that the interaction between PdCu bimetals and support can regulate the electronic state of Pd, thereby enhancing the use and efficiency of noble metals.

Specific structures of PdCu bimetallic catalysts have been reported to exhibit superior performance in the hydrogenation of acetylene; however, the performance and the underlying mechanism of the conventional catalysts with comparable Pd/Cu ratios remain unknown. In this work, the well-defined crystalline sites of Pd1Cu1 and Pd1Cu3 are investigated in the hydrogenation of high concentration acetylene, and the corresponding conventional catalysts prepared by incipient wetness impregnation are compared. By correlating the theoretical and experimental results, the electronic effect is found to be present on the bimetallic structures, which results in better inhibition of excessive hydrogenation. The oligomerization reaction is better controlled over Pd/SiO2(NS) and Pd1Cu1/SiO2(NS), and Pd1Cu3/SiO2(NS) exhibits the highest selectivity to oligomers and the largest amount of green oil accumulation. Among the well-defined structures, Pd1Cu1/SiO2(NS) shows similar activity and stability to Pd/SiO2(NS), but better suppression of the excessive hydrogenation reaction. Due to the existence of various sites, the conventional bimetallic catalysts show different properties from the corresponding well-defined crystalline catalysts. The performances of the well-defined alloy structures allow us to understand and analyze the actual properties of the surface sites over the conventional catalysts, and inspire further work to design optimum catalysts in different reaction environments.

Abstract In this paper, we have synthesized a series of PdCu bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) catalysts using the noble-metal-induced reduction process and investigated in detail by HRTEM, EDS mapping, XRD, and ICP-AES. More importantly, we also found that PdCu bimetallic NPs catalysts showed a compositional influence in the reaction of nitrobenzene reduction. When the palladium molar percentage of the PdCu NPs catalysts increases to more than 0.66, the main product is azoxybenzene. While the palladium molar percentage of the PdCu NPs catalysts dropped below 0.41, the main product is aniline. From the experimental results, the different catalytic results for nitrobenzene reduction could be attributed to the changes in the electronic structural and surface composition of the PdCu bimetallic NPs.

Engineering two-dimensional (2D) metallic nanomaterials has attracted numerous research interests for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their highly exposed unsaturated metal atoms and excellent physicochemical properties. Herein, we report a CO-confined growth strategy for the synthesis of 2D PdCu bimetallene with several atomic layers for ORR. The incorporation of Cu into Pd metallene can generate strain effect and change the electronic structure, weakening the interaction between Pd and CO and suppressing the adsorption of CO. Therefore, the synthesized PdCu bimetallene exhibits remarkable catalytic performance for alkaline ORR, with mass and specific activities of 0.82 A mgPd–1 and 1.01 mA cm–2, which are 5.1 and 3.7 times those for Pt/C, respectively. Meanwhile, the PdCu bimetallene shows no decrease in ORR activity after 5000 cycles. This work highlights the design of ultrathin bimetallic 2D nanomaterials for efficient ORR electrocatalysis.
