Microscale Perovskite Quantum Dot Light-Emitting Diodes (Micro-PeLEDs) for Full-Color Displays

Wenhao Bai,Tongtong Xuan,Haiyan Zhao,Shuchen Shi,Xiaoyu Zhang,Tianliang Zhou,Le Wang,Rong-Jun Xie

Group III–V semiconductor-based microscale light-emitting diode (micro-LED) displays are recognized as one of the most promising display technologies with superhigh brightness and resolution, strong contrast, and superlarge color gamut but currently suffer from low efficiency, low production yield, and high cost. Here, it is proposed to realize cost-effective and full-color micro-LED displays by using microscale perovskite quantum dot LEDs (micro-PeLEDs) as emitters. Bright and uniform red-, green-, and blue-emitting (RGB) micro-PeLED arrays with each pixel size as small as 45 µm are fabricated by in situ inkjet printing a perovskite quantum dot (PeQD) emissive layer in the structure of indium tin oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)/poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK)/sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)/PeQD/1,3,5-tris(1-phenyl-1 H -benzimidazol-2-yl)benzene (TPBi)/LiF/Al. These RGB micro-PeLED arrays display an external quantum efficiency of 0.832%, 0.419%, and 0.052% for red, green, and blue colors, a resolution of 210 PPI, and a wide color gamut (135% of the National Television Standards Committee standard). The authors further demonstrate flexible and full-color active-matrix micro-PeLED displays, which have potential applications in future ultrahigh-definition displays, light communication, and artificial intelligence.

Vertical Quasi-2D Perovskite on ZnMgO Enables High-Performance Pure-Red PeLEDs

Guan-Jie Ding,Xiaolin Tai,Bo Li,Yong-Hui Song,Ya-Lan Hu,Lin-Lin Zeng,Zhen-Yu Ma,Sami Ur Rahman,Yue Lin,Fengjia Fan,Hong-Bin Yao

Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) perovskites, featuring a large-cation-intercalated quantum-well structure, are efficient emitters for pure-red perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs); however, their electroluminescence is limited by poor carrier injection because all current quasi-2D emitters are horizontally aligned on low-mobility organic electron transport layers. Therefore, a PeLED with a quasi-2D perovskite vertically stacked on a high-mobility inorganic electron-transport layer is highly anticipated but has yet to be achieved. Here, we introduce branched guanidinium cations (GA + ) and non-protonic phosphonium, (2-aminoethyl) triphenyl- cations (PAT + ) to direct the vertical growth of quasi-2D emitters on a high-conductivity electron-transport layer, ZnMgO, enabling high-performance pure-red PeLEDs that exhibit a maximum luminance of 65 875 cd m −2 and an external quantum efficiency of 14.63% even at a high brightness of 49 080 cd m −2 . Impressively, the low driving voltage, enabled by efficient carrier transport, also yields an operational half-lifetime of 5528 h at an initial luminance of 100 cd m −2 , which represents the most stable pure-red PeLED reported to date.

Interface Engineering of Perovskite/Hole-Transport Layers Toward Efficient Pure-Red Quasi-2D PeLEDs

Aoxing Wang,Ji Jiang,Zhengchang Xia,Zhouxin Li,Huabo Yang,Huaiwen Zheng,Zhigang Yin,Jingbi You,Xingwang Zhang

High‑efficiency perovskite light‑emitting diodes (PeLEDs) with pure‑red emission are crucial for next‑generation ultra‑high‑definition displays. However, the widely used hole transport layer poly(9‑vinylcarbazole) (PVK) in iodine-based PeLEDs suffers from poor wettability, interfacial defects, and energy‑level misalignment with the perovskite layer, which hinder the formation of high‑quality perovskite films, induce non-radiative recombination loss, and limit efficient hole injection. Herein, we report an interfacial engineering strategy that simultaneously addresses these challenges by incorporating a multifunctional small molecule, thiophene‑2‑sulfonamide (2‑ThSA), into the perovskite precursor. 2‑ThSA acts as a molecular bridge: its sulfonamide moiety interacts with the carbazole units of PVK, while its thiophene ring facilitates π-π stacking with the PVK layer, thereby improving interfacial contact. Simultaneously, the sulfonamide group provides multivalent coordination sites, where ─S═O bonds coordinate with undercoordinated Pb 2+ ions and ─NH 2 groups interact with I − ions, effectively passivating interfacial defects and suppressing non‑radiative recombination. As a result, the 2‑ThSA‑modified pure‑red PeLEDs exhibit stable electroluminescence at 634 nm with a peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 27.2% and CIE coordinates (0.701, 0.299) that align perfectly with the Rec. 2020 standard.

Molecularly understanding and regulating carrier injection behavior of ETL/perovskite towards high performance PeLEDs

Qungui Wang,Keli Wang,Cheng Yan,Xiankan Zeng,Xuehai Fu,Jingjing Cao,Shiyu Yang,Wen Li,Xiangrong Chen,Weiqing Yang

Effectively balancing carrier injection of perovskite LEDs (PeLEDs) for next-generation display and illumination urgently needs for molecularly understanding carrier injection behavior of electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite toward further developing high performance PeLEDs. Here, we molecularly reveal the electron injection behaviors of PeLEDs by theoretically-experimentally decoupling the electron transport of ETLs and electron injection of TmPyPB/perovskite and TPBi/perovskite. Resulted, the better molecular planarity bridging effect (MPBE) of TmPyPB than TPBi can effectively increase electronic-coupling for the improved electron transport ability and significantly decrease injection barrier for the enhanced electron injection capability, intrinsically leading to a more balanced carrier injection and a less electron accumulation of PeLEDs. Compared to TPBi-based PeLEDs, the TmPyPB-based PeLEDs present the obviously-increased average EQE, current efficiency, power efficiency and luminance by 44 %, 63 %, 43 % and 100 %, respectively. Meanwhile, this PeLED shows a higher voltage tolerance characteristic of 7.5 V than that of TPBi-based PeLEDs (6.25 V). Therefore, this work may provide a fundamental insight into carrier injection behavior of PeLEDs for effectively-regulating its carrier injection balance and further for its greatly-facilitated commercialization.

Efficient sky-blue cesium lead bromide light-emitting diodes with enhanced stability via synergistic interfacial induction and polymer scaffold inhibition

Yongsheng Hu,Li Song,Chang Tan,Fan Yang,Yu Wen,Lishuang Wang,Haixia Li,Xin Li,Fengying Ma,Siyu Lu

All inorganic CsPbX 3 perovskite has aroused broad interests in building efficient light-emitting devices with wide color gamut and flexible fabrication process. So far, the realization of high-performance blue perovskite light-emitting devices (PeLEDs) is still a critical challenge. Herein, we propose an interfacial induction strategy to generate low-dimensional CsPbBr 3 with sky blue emission by employing γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) modified poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS). The interaction between GABA and Pb 2+ inhibited the formation of bulk CsPbBr 3 phase. Further assisted by the polymer networks , the sky-blue CsPbBr 3 film exhibited much improved stability under both photoluminescence and electrical excitation. This can be ascribed to the scaffold effect and the passivation function of the polymer. Consequently, the obtained sky-blue PeLEDs exhibited an average external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.67% (maximum of 7.21%) with a maximum brightness of 3308 cd/m 2 and a working lifespan reaching 0.41 h. The strategy in this work provides a new opportunity for exploitation the full potential of blue PeLEDs towards application in lighting and display devices.

Unveiling the Effect of Synthetic Atmospheric Humidity on the Performance of FAPbBr3 Nanocrystals and Their PeLEDs

Qinglin Zeng,Jibin Zhang,Xinzhen Ji,Meng Wang,Shuailing Lin,Meng Su,Qianli Liu,Linyuan Lian,Mochen Jia,Xu Chen,Zhuangzhuang Ma,Ying Liu,Yanbing Han,Yongtao Tian,Xin-Jian Li,Zhifeng Shi

The polar solvent of water can disrupt the structure of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs), and its presence is inevitable during the synthesis process. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the impact of synthetic atmospheric humidity on the performance of PeNCs and their electroluminescence. In this study, we first synthesized formamidine lead bromide (FAPbBr3) PeNCs at different relative air humidities and explored their optoelectronic properties and electroluminescence. We found that under optimal humidity conditions (40% R.H.), water molecules can reduce the nucleation growth barrier of PeNCs through ligand replacement. This process results in nanocrystals with good crystallinity and fewer defects, thereby reducing defect states and nonradiative recombination. The perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) based on these FAPbBr3 PeNCs exhibit a maximum luminance of 39,000 cd m–2 and a peak external quantum efficiency of 16.2%, surpassing most reported values in the literature without the use of any additional additives. This study elucidates the role of atmospheric humidity in the growth of PeNCs and introduces the concept of humidity-assisted synthesis, which is crucial for scaling up production in the industry.

Quantum-Confined Dodecahedron CsPbBr3 Quantum Dots by A Sequential Post-Treatment Strategy for Efficient Blue PeLEDs

Longfei Yuan,Dewang Li,Hongli Liu,Fei Zhang,Shirong Wang

CsPbBr 3 quantum dots (QDs) prepared through traditional hot-injection and room temperature reprecipitation methods are usually hexahedral (nanoplate/cube) and green-emitting. These methods severely obstruct the development of blue perovskite-based light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) because the resultant QDs always suffer unachievable morphology regulation. Here, highly efficient blue-emitting rhombic dodecahedron CsPbBr 3 QDs (CsPbBr 3 <12> QDs) are obtained by regulating morphological transformation for the first time through a novel and facile sequential post-treatment strategy. Hydrobromide (-NH 3 + ) with stronger adsorption energy promotes the morphology transform of QDs from nanoplate to cube by substituting oleylamine in the first step. Then, polar solvent vapor eliminates PbX 6 4− and led to the (112) crystal plane of the cube QDs being exposed, which is effectively stabilized by -NH 3 + to realize morphology transition from cube to the dodecahedron. Highly efficient 12-faceted dodecahedrons are endowed with significantly enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield of 89.8% at 476 nm as well as uniform size distribution and mono-dispersity. The target blue PeLEDs achieve the maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.6% (480 nm) and excellent spectrum stability. This study provides a new strategy to prepare blue-emitting CsPbBr 3 <12> QDs by delicate control toward the growth and polyhedron process of crystal.

Restraint of Nonradiative Recombination via Modulation of n-Phase Distribution through Interfacial Lithium Salt Insertion for High-Performance Pure-Blue Perovskite LEDs

Dicai Zhuang,Yingyu Wang,Qiuting Cai,Lanlan Zhai,He Huang,Guanghong Yang,Yun Yang,Lijie Zhang,Chao Zou

Quasi-two-dimensional perovskite has been widely used in blue perovskite light-emitting diodes. However, the performance of these devices is still hampered by random phase distribution, nonradiative recombination, and imbalanced carrier transport. In this work, an effective strategy is proposed to mitigate these limitations by inserting lithium salts at the interfaces between the hole transport layer (HTL) and the perovskite layer. The perovskite film on the inserted Li2CO3 layer exhibits reasonable n-value redistribution, which leads to the repressive nonradiation recombination and enhanced carrier transport. Moreover, the inserted Li2CO3 layer also improves the electrical conductivity of PEDOT:PSS and hinders indium ion diffusion from the PEDOT:PSS layer to the perovskite film, which inhibits exciton quenching and nonradiative recombination loss at the HTL/perovskite interface. Taking advantage of these merits, we have successfully fabricated efficient pure-blue PeLEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 6.2% at 472 nm and a luminance of 726 cd cm–2. The restraint of nonradiative recombination at the interface offers a promising approach for efficient pure-blue PeLEDs.

High-performance blue perovskite light-emitting diodes based on the “far-field plasmonic effect” of gold nanoparticles

Tianfei Xu,Wei Li,Xiaoyan Wu,Mahshid Ahmadi,Long Xu,Ping Chen

Metal halide perovskites have become the next-generation electroluminescent materials due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. In the last several years, there has been tremendous progress in the performance of red and green-light perovskite electroluminescent devices (PeLEDs) with external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) exceeding 14% and 21%, respectively. In contrast, blue PeLEDs are still in their infancy, due to their EQEs of below 1%. Therefore, the development of blue PeLEDs is sorely needed since blue light plays a vital role in achieving full-color and white-light emission. In order to improve the efficiency of blue PeLEDs, herein we introduce gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) into a poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) hole transport layer (HTL) to achieve a high performance blue PeLED with an emission wavelength of ∼475 nm. By introducing Au NPs, the optical properties of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO):PEA2(CsPbBrxCl3−x)n−1PbBr4 perovskite films have been significantly improved leading to 3.8 times enhancement in fluorescence intensity. Based on this improvement, blue PeLEDs record a maximum luminance and EQE of ∼1110 cd m−2 and 1.64%, respectively, presenting one of the best performances among the blue PeLEDs reported so far. Finally, the PeLED performance improvement is attributed to the far-field surface plasmonic effect of Au NPs. This effect has originated from the interference between the original chromophore emission and the mirror-reflected emission of mirror-type substrates. This study not only reveals the function of Au NPs in the development of blue PeLEDs, but also offers new insights into the fundamental physics underlying the effect of surface plasmon resonance of Au NPs on perovskite light emitting devices.

Boosting Efficiency of Fully Thermally Evaporated PeLEDs via Benzylphosphonic Acid-Induced In Situ Crystallization Control and Defect Passivation

Na Meng,Yajing Li,Yu Zhang,Junhao Liu,Ziqiang Wang,Xiaorong Shi,Yutian Xu,Yuanhao Cui,Xinwu Ke,Zhelu Hu,Lingfeng Chao,Kui Xu,Yingdong Xia,Qingxun Guo,Xue Min,Yonghua Chen

Fully thermally evaporated perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) represent a promising pathway toward scalable and commercial optoelectronic applications. However, rapid crystallization and excessive precursor reactivity during deposition often result in uncontrolled grain growth and high defect densities, limiting device performance. In this work, we propose an in situ crystallization regulation strategy by incorporating benzylphosphonic acid (BPA) into thermally evaporated CsMAPbBr 3 films. The phosphonic acid group in BPA coordinates with Pb 2+ ions during film growth, effectively slowing down the crystallization rate, reducing the average grain size from ∼200 to ∼40 nm. Moreover, BPA enables in situ passivation of vacancy-related non-radiative recombination centers, enhancing the radiative recombination efficiency. As a result, the fully thermally evaporated PeLEDs achieve a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE max ) of 12.68% and a peak luminance of 62,104 cd m −2 . This work provides a simple yet effective approach to simultaneously regulate crystallization and passivate defects of the thermally evaporated perovskite.

Self-assembled mono-hole-injecting layers towards efficient deep-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes

Xin Zheng,Changting Wei,Shichen Yuan,Daqing Zhang,Xiansheng Li,Xin Luo,Weiling Lu,Bo Xu,Jing Huang

Hole-injection layers (HILs) play crucial roles in enhancing the performance of perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) by lowering the energy barrier between the anode and the hole-transport layer (HTL). However, the commonly employed HIL, poly( 3 , 4 -ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonic acid (PEDOT: PSS) has notable drawbacks, such as extreme acidity and susceptibility to corrosion, which severely hampers device efficiency and stability. Herein, a self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-[ 2 -( 9H -Carbazol- 9 -yl) ethyl] phosphonic acid (2PACz) instead of PEDOT: PSS was employed in PeLEDs, which could reduce the negative impacts on neighboring perovskite sites and indium tin oxide electrodes. To obtain favorable energy level alignment between 2PACz and the perovskite layer, poly( 9 -vinylcarbazole) (PVK) was introduced as an indispensable HTL. Consequently, the 2PACz/PVK-based deep-blue PeLEDs exhibit a lower turn-on voltage of 3.20 V, and a peak external quantum efficiency of 4.42 % at 467 nm, which is a threefold improvement over the control devices. This impressive performance boost can be attributed to the reduction in interfacial defects and the improved balance of carrier injection, leading to more efficient light emission. Our study not only introduces an innovative and cost-effective HIL solution for PeLEDs but also provides valuable insights and guidance for the development of highly efficient and stable PeLEDs in the future.

Controllable Transition Metal Cations Doping Enable Efficient and Spectral Stable Pure-Red Perovskite QLED

Yuqin Su,Qunqing Lin,Xinyi Lv,Yan Li,Kun Zhang,Xiuting Wu,Ying Zhou,Yashuang Guo,Maria A. Sandzhieva,Sergey V. Makarov,Hengyang Xiang,Haibo Zeng

Mixed-halide perovskite plays important role in wide-color gamut displays as a vital material for three primary colors. However, halide segregation and caused unstable spectra are the intrinsic problem in mixed-halide perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) originating from the lattice strain and the resulting defects in perovskite quantum dots (PQDs). Here, smaller transition metal cations are applied to replace Pb 2+ and release lattice strain, which avoids halogen escaping/halide vacancies forming to ensure high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and stable spectra. However, the actual doping amount is limited by ionic size and chemical environment, which will affect the improvement of optoelectronic performance. Thus, this study proposes a strategy by introducing tri-n-octylphosphine to coordinate strongly with metal cations and catch them to participate the nucleation-growth process. Through doping transition metal cations effectively, the CsPb(BrI) 3 PQDs show high PLQY (92%) and long lifetime (107.83 ns). Further, highly efficient pure-red PeLEDs with highest external quantum efficiency of 16.86% is fabricated and the spectrum can be stabilized at 630 nm with only 1 nm red-shift under bias, showing the promising potential of PQDs for next-generation display.
