To reduce the amount of organic solvents in pendimethalin emulsifiable concentrate (EC), small-size microcapsules (S-MCs) and large-size microcapsules (L-MCs) were prepared with polyurea as a wall material. Petri-dish bioassays were carried out to investigate the bioactivity of formulations and the influence of both organic matter and moisture. The relationships between degradation and the biological activity of three pendimethalin formulations in the soil were investigated, and field experiments were executed to verify the laboratory results. The laboratory tests showed the following: (1) the bioactivity of EC and S-MCs was similar and greater than that of L-MCs; (2) organic matter could reduce the bioactivity of MCs and EC, and the impact of organic matter on L-MCs was greater; (3) increased soil moisture content had no significant effect on the bioactivity of EC but slightly reduced that of the MCs; and (4) the L-MCs showed significantly more prolonged residual and effective persistence in the soil than did EC and S-MCs. However, the field experiments indicated that the herbicidal efficacies of L-MCs at the early and late stages were both lower than those of EC. Comprehensive analysis of the results indicated that the main reason that the herbicidal efficacy of L-MCs was lower than that of EC in the field was that L-MCs missed the optimal herbicidal periods due to the slow-release characteristics of L-MCs. The S-MCs had both similar release rates and herbicidal efficacy in the field as EC. Therefore, to develop a good pesticide formulation, the occurrence and damage characteristic of pests must be considered.

In this study, pendimethalin synthesis was carried out in a microreactor to reduce its thermal risk. First, the nitration reaction was conducted in a semi-batch mode in the micro calorimeter. It was found the process was highly exothermic with a high adiabatic temperature rise (>133 °C). Then the reaction was transformed to a continuous flow mode in a microreactor. Effects of molar ratio, residence time and reaction temperature on the thermal behavior of the nitration process as well as the yield of pendimethalin were investigated and analyzed. Response surface methodology was used to optimize the reaction condition. The results showed that under the optimum condition in the microreactor, the yield reached 54.32%. The space-time yield in the microreactor was 1.38 g⋅L −1 ∙s −1 , which was two orders of magnitude higher than that in the batch reactor. Further, a risk assessment using a recently developed method (m-ITHI) was carried out to compare the thermal hazards of the nitration process in the microreactor and the batch reactor. The index for the continuous flow mode was 3.77, corresponding to a risk level of Class I, which was safer than the batch mode with a risk level of Class II. Overall, this paper showcased an inherently safer design with the microreactor and provided a theoretical basis for the one-step synthesis of pendimethalin.

Microencapsulation of pesticides is a promising attempt to reduce environmental pollution and prevent the active ingredients from the interference of external factors. In this paper, pendimethalin microcapsules were prepared by the interfacial polymerization of 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and ethylenediamine (EDA) based on microfluidic technology. Effects of the microchannel structure, reaction temperature, surfactant type, and fluid flow rates were investigated and evaluated. The results showed that pendimethalin microcapsules prepared under suitable conditions had a smooth surface, good monodispersity, a high encapsulation efficiency (96.7%), and excellent thermal stability. The size and morphology control of microcapsules were realized by adjusting the flow rates of the continuous phase and the hydrophilic monomer EDA aqueous solution. The release of pendimethalin had a sustained release characteristic that was closely related to the morphology of microcapsules. Compared with the pendimethalin emulsifiable concentrate, pendimethalin microcapsules exhibited outstanding herbicidal activity in the weed control experiments. Therefore, pendimethalin microcapsules with tunable properties were successfully obtained from the microfluidic device and showed great potential in agricultural applications.

Peptidomimetic and anti-immunocomplex peptides can be easily isolated from phage display libraries, and can be used as alternatives to chemical competing haptens to improve the sensitivity of small molecule immunoassay. In this work, 16 peptidomimetics and 7 anti-immunocomplex peptides of pendimethalin (PND) were obtained from cyclic 7-, 8-, 9-, and 10-residue peptide phage libraries. Peptidomimetic EJ-2 (CMFTGTDFPC) with the highest sensitivity in competitive phage enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunocomplex peptide EF-30 (CNPGWPPIPC) with the highest sensitivity in noncompetitive phage ELISA were selected to prepare phage-free peptides with GGGSSK-biotin at the C-terminus. Competitive and noncompetitive lateral flow immunoassays (CLFIA and NLFIA) were developed by using the phage-free peptides. After optimization, the CLFIA and NLFIA showed visual limit of detections (vLODs) of 5 ng/mL and 2.5 ng/mL, respectively, which were improved two- and fourfold compared with a LFIA based on chemical hapten. The NLFIA showed better sensitivity than CLFIA in the detection of spiked samples, and can meet the detection requirements for agro-products regulated by EU and China. The detection results of CLFIA and NLFIA for blind samples were consistent with that of ultra performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. Graphical abstract

In this study, we isolated a yeast strain, YC2, by enrichment culture from pendimethalin-contaminated soil. The analysis of its phenotypic features and 26S rRNA sequence confirmed that the strain YC2 is Clavispora lusitaniae. According to the kinetics of pendimethalin degradation, YC2 could degrade 74% of 200 mg L−1 pendimethalin in CMB liquid culture over 8 days. LC-MS/MS was used to identify the metabolites of pendimethalin after degradation. This study confirmed that its metabolites consist of 1,2-dimethyl-3,5-dinitro-4-N(buta-1,3-dien-2-yl)-dinitrobenzenamine-N-oxide and 1,2-dimethyl-3,5-dinitro-4-N(prop-1-en-2-yl)-dinitrobenzenamine-N-oxide, which were broken down by a series of enzymatic reactions to produce CO2 and H2O. Thus, the study herein sheds light on the role of yeast in the degradation of pendimethalin.

Dinitroaniline herbicides such as trifluralin and pendimethalin are persistent bioaccumulative toxins to aquatic organisms. Thus, in-situ remediation of contaminated sediments is desired. This study investigated whether black carbons (BCs), including apple wood charcoal (BC1), rice straw biochar (BC2), and activated carbon (BC3), could facilitate abiotic reduction of trifluralin and pendimethalin by sulfides of environmentally-relevant concentrations in anoxic coastal sediments. The reduction rates of trifluralin and pendimethalin increased substantially with increasing BC dosages in the sediments. This enhancing effect was dependent on BC type with the greatest for BC3 followed by BC1 and BC2, which well correlated with their specific surface area. The pseudo-first order reduction rate constants ( k obs ) for BC3-amended sediment (2%) were 13- and 14 times the rate constants in the BC-free sediment. The reduction rates increased with increasing temperature from 8 to 25 °C in the BC-amended sediment, following the Arrhenius relationship. Finally, through molecular modeling by density functional theory and reaction species identification from mass spectra, molecular pathways of trifluralin and pendimethalin reduction were elucidated. In contrary to the separate sequential reduction of each nitro group to amine group, both nitro groups, first reduced to nitroso, then eventually to amine groups.

Pendimethalin (PDM), a dinitroaniline group herbicide, is extensively used for controlling weeds in amounts of agricultural crops. In this work, Hapten-1 and Hapten-2 were synthesized for the preparation of an anti-PDM monoclonal antibody (mAb), which was used to establish an indirect competitive ELISA. Based on the anti-PDM mAb, we developed an immunochromatographic assay (ICA) for detection of PDM in potato and apple. Under optimal conditions, the ICA exhibited a cut-off value of 200 ng/g and the visible limit of detection was 10 ng/g for apple and potato samples in qualitative detection. Analysis of quantitative detection suggested that the limit of detection were 5.4 and 3.2 ng/g in apple and potato samples, respectively. Moreover, the results obtained from the developed ICA strip were shown to coincide with those of LC–MS/MS in the analysis of apple and potato samples. In addition, the ICA exhibited excellent performance with regard to sensitivity, speed, and portability in contrast to previous determination methods for PDM. Hence, the proposed ICA strip showed superior prospects in PDM residue determination.

The frequent detection of oxytetracycline in agricultural soils may alter the environmental behavior and risks of coexisting pesticides. This study investigated the influence of oxytetracycline on the degradation and phytotoxicity of pendimethalin in a soil–soybean system. Results demonstrated that oxytetracycline at 50 mg/kg prolonged the half-life of pendimethalin in soil from 33.0 days to 40.8 days. Coexposure inhibited the activities of urease, dehydrogenase, and catalase in the soil. While pendimethalin alone showed no adverse effects on soybean growth, coexposure with oxytetracycline induced pronounced growth inhibition and enhanced oxidative stress. Ecological risk assessment confirmed significantly elevated risks to earthworms. Further analysis revealed suppressed CYP450 and GST activities in both soil and soybean plants, with more pronounced reductions observed in the plants. These findings indicate that the coexistence of antibiotic–herbicide can enhance herbicide persistence and increase environmental contamination risks.
