In this work, the atomic oxygen (AO) erosion-resistance effect and mechanism of the Perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) coating were investigated from the perspective of element distribution in the depth direction. The results revealed that the coating demonstrated good adhesion and intrinsic AO erosion-resistance, which was attributed to the composition gradient formed in the coating. Moreover, the oxygen ratio of the SiOx on top layer of the coating could be elevated during AO exposure, strengthening the Ar ion etching durability of the coating. According to these results, an AO erosion-resistance mechanism model of the PHPS-derived SiOx coating was finally obtained. Keywords:PHPS;silica coating;atomic oxygen;erosion-corrosion;resistance mechanism

The attachment of fouling organisms in marine environments poses serious challenges to the service life and energy efficiency of underwater structures. Traditional antifouling coatings, plagued by environmental pollution, fall short of green and sustainable development goals. To address this, this study develops an eco-friendly multifunctional antifouling coating based on perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane-modified silica-coated halloysitenanotubes (HDTMS-SiO 2 @HNTs). The coating’s functionality is governed by two synergistic interfacial phenomena: the chemical reduction of surface free energy through the grafting of long-chain alkyl groups, and the physical amplification of roughness via a hierarchical micro/nano-structure derived from the tubular halloysite framework decorated with silica nanoparticles. The coating, prepared via a simple spray-coating process and thermal curing, exhibits a static water contact angle of 158° and sliding angle of ≈6°. This superhydrophobic state is characterized by the formation of a stable air cushion at the solid–liquid interface, effectively minimizing adhesion of marine foulants. At 5 wt% filler loading, the coating demonstrates robust adhesion (Grade 0), high hardness (6H), and excellent barrier properties (EIS). Furthermore, incorporation curcumin-loaded halloysitenanotubes (Cur@HNTs) yields > 99.99% bacterial reduction against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus . This work provides a robust, fluorine-free surface engineering strategy for the design of durable marine antifouling coatings.

A transparent perhydropolysilazane-derived-SiO x coated cellulose film with high gas barrier properties was fabricated via a facile solution dip-coating followed by UV curing method. The conversion of perhydropolysilazane to SiO x was proved by ATR-FTIR, XPS and TOF–SIMS characterizations. AFM and SEM images revealed the smoothness of the coating and good adhesion between the cellulose substrate and the coating. The thickness of the SiO x coating (50–450 nm) can be tuned by changing the concentration of the perhydropolysilazane precursor solution. The cellulose film (35 µm in thickness) with 450 nm thick SiO x coating exhibits low oxygen transmission rate (OTR) value of 0.82 cm 3 /m 2 ·day and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) value of 1.28 g/m 2 ·day. The excellent oxygen and water vapor barrier properties, ultrahigh transparency and complete biodegradability of the SiO x coated cellulose film endow it competitive potential for packaging applications. Graphical abstract A transparent perhydropolysilazane-derived-SiO x layer is tightly coated on a cellulose film via a facile solution dip-coating followed by UV curing method. The sandwich structured cellulose-SiO x films show excellent oxygen and water vapor barrier properties as well as ultrahigh transparency and complete biodegradability, which has a great potential for food, medicine and other packaging applications.

Perhydropolysilazane (PHPS) is a silicon-nitrogen backbone polymer widely utilized as a ceramic precursor; however, a deep under-standing of its molecular structure has been hindered by the complex and highly branched architecture. This work presents a systematic and quantitative investigation into the molecular structure of PHPS by integrating advanced characterization techniques, including multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy ( 1 H-/ 29 Si-/ 15 N-NMR), gel permeation chromatography with multi-angle light scattering and differential viscometry (GPC-MALS-Vis), and molecular simulations. Through multidimensional NMR analysis, five fundamental structural units (−SiH, −SiH 2 , −SiH 3 , −NH, and −N) were identified, with no detectable −NH 2 groups. A dual-nucleus quantification strategy based on 1 H- and 29 Si-NMR enabled the precise determination of the molar ratios of these structural units. Building upon these results, two structural parameters—branching degree ( D b ) and number of cyclization ( N c )—were introduced to quantitatively characterize the network topology of PH-PS. Subsequently, three-dimensional molecular models were constructed via density functional theory (DFT) simulations to reveal the micro-conformations of the polymer. This study establishes a robust characterization framework that reveals the fine structure and network topology of PH-PS, thereby providing a significant theoretical foundation and technical support for structural tailoring and performance optimization to meet the demanding requirements of integrated circuits, functional coatings, and advanced functional materials.
