In vitro fecal fermentation characteristics of bamboo shoot (Phyllostachys edulis) polysaccharide

Qi Li,Weijie Wu,Hangjun Chen,Xiangjun Fang,Yanchao Han,Mingyong Xie,Haiyan Gao

The effects of Moso bamboo ( Phyllostachys edulis ) shoot polysaccharide (BSP) on the human gut microbiota composition and volatile metabolite components were investigated by in vitro fermentation. After fermentation for 48 h, BSP utilization reached 40.29% and the pH of the fermentation solution decreased from 6.89 to 4.57. Moreover, the total short-chain fatty acid concentration significantly ( P  < 0.05) increased from 13.46 mM (0 h) to 43.20 mM (48 h). 16S rRNA analysis revealed several differences in the gut microbiota community structure of the BSP-treated and water-treated (control) cultures. In the BSP group, the abundance of Firmicutes , Actinobacteria , and Proteobacteria was significantly increased, while that of Bacteroidetes and Fusobacteria significantly decreased. Moreover, the concentrations of benzene, its substituted derivatives, and carbonyl compounds in the volatile metabolites of the BSP-treated group decreased, while that of organic acids significantly increased after 48 h of fermentation. These results demonstrate that BSP improves gastrointestinal health.

Ionic liquids–lithium salts pretreatment followed by ultrasound-assisted extraction of vitexin-4″-O-glucoside, vitexin-2″-O-rhamnoside and vitexin from Phyllostachys edulis leaves

Kexin Hou,Fengli Chen,Yuangang Zu,Lei Yang

An efficient method for the extraction of vitexin , vitexin-4″- O -glucoside, and vitexin-2″- O -rhamnoside from Phyllostachys edulis leaves comprises heat treatment using an ionic liquid–lithium salt mixture (using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide as the solvent and lithium chloride as the additive), followed by ultrasound-assisted extraction. To obtain higher extraction yields, the effects of the relevant experimental parameters (including heat treatment temperature and time, relative amounts of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide and lithium chloride, power and time of the ultrasound irradiation, and the liquid–solid ratio) are evaluated and response surface methodology is used to optimize the significant factors. The morphologies of the treated and untreated P. edulis leaves are studied by scanning electron microscopy. The improved extraction method proposed provides high extraction yield, good repeatability and precision, and has wide potential applications in the analysis of plant samples.

Phyllostachys Edulis-Derived Nanoconfined Microporous Carbon–Sulfur Cathodes for High-Rate Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Ting Yang,Panpan Dong,Zhenyu Chen,Xuemeng Gan,Liangjie Gu,Qiao Lin,Weiqing Yang

The severe shuttle effect of polysulfides for high-performance lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries leads to poor reversibility and cyclability at high rates, greatly hindering their practical applications. Here, we design a Phyllostachys edulis-derived microporous carbon–sulfur (denoted as MPC@S) cathode with physical nanoconfinement and chemical C–S bonding for high-rate Li–S batteries. The high pore volume can physically confine sulfur and polysulfides into microporous carbon to achieve good structural stability of the electrode during cycling. Moreover, the strong chemical C–S bonding interaction between MPC and sulfur can effectively improve the utilization of the active material and enhance redox reaction kinetics at high rates. Due to the synergistic combination of physical and chemical confinement of sulfur and polysulfides, the Li–S battery with MPC@S cathode delivers an initial specific discharge capacity of 1070.06 mAh g–1 at 167.5 mA g–1 and achieves good cyclability with a high average Coulombic efficiency of >97.88% at 1675 mA g–1 for 500 cycles with a low decay rate of 0.0912% per cycle. This work provides a facile strategy for the large-scale fabrication of high-performance biomass-derived composite cathodes for high-rate Li–S batteries and brings deep insights into structure–property relationships of high-capacity electrodes for next-generation lithium batteries.

Remodeling of Bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) Shoot Polysaccharides by Monascus purpureus Fermentation Enhances Antioxidant Protection in Caco-2 Cells

Fang Long,Zuomin Hu,Huanzhao Luo,Zhongxing Chu,Shuqin Li,Yaping Zhou,Anping Li,Feijun Luo

Bamboo shoot polysaccharides possess promising bioactivities, but their high molecular weight and complex branched structures limit their functional efficacy. In this study, bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) shoots were fermented withMonascus purpureusATCC16426 to obtain a novel neutral polysaccharide (FBSP-1). Monosaccharide composition analysis indicated that FBSP-1 comprised glucose (Glc), xylose (Xyl), arabinose (Ara), galactose (Gal), and mannose (Man). Glycosidic linkage and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy data revealed that the backbone of FBSP-1 mainly consisted of →2)-α-Manp-(1→, →4)-α-Glcp-(1→, →3)-β-Xylp-(1→, →3)-α-Araf-(1→ and →2)-α-Araf-(1→. Compared with unfermented polysaccharide BSP-1, fermentation markedly altered the monosaccharide profile, increasing Glc, Xyl and Man, decreasing Ara and Gal, and reducing the molecular weight. In H2O2-treated Caco-2 cells, FBSP-1 significantly alleviated oxidative damage by reducing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, while enhancing the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione reductase (GR), demonstrating pronounced antioxidant protective effects. Overall, this study demonstrates thatMonascusfermentation is an effective strategy for the structural remodeling of bamboo shoot polysaccharides, enabling the enhancement of their antioxidant functionality and supporting their potential application as functional ingredients in plant-based antioxidant foods.

A Phyllostachys Edulis-Derived Microporous Carbon-Coated Separator with Improved Li+ Transport for Long Cycling Lithium–Chalcogenide Batteries

Dong Panpan,Yang Ting,Gan Xuemeng,Liu Xing,Yang Weiqing

Lithium–chalcogenide batteries (LCBs) offer high theoretical energy density but suffer from the polysulfide/polyselenide shuttling during charging and discharging processes with conventional polypropylene (PP) separators, causing low active-material utilization and severe capacity decay. Herein, we develop a Phyllostachys edulis bamboo-derived microporous carbon-coated PP separator (MPC@PP) to suppress polychalcogenide migration and enable long-term cycling. The abundant micropores in the MPC coating enhance polysulfide adsorption and boost the Li + transference number to 0.57, which is a 46.2% increase over pristine PP (0.39). The lithium symmetric Li/Li cell with MPC@PP exhibits good cycling stability up to 300 h at 0.5 mA cm –2 (1 mAh cm –2 ) with a smooth and compact lithium deposition. When used in Li–S battery with the S@Ketjenblack cathode, the MPC@PP cell delivers a reversible capacity of 1272.92 mAh g –1 at 167.5 mA g –1 and stable cycling over 500 cycles at 837.5 mA g –1 . Moreover, Li–SeS 2 battery with MPC@PP achieves an initial capacity of 723.48 mAh g –1 at 1342 mA g –1 with average Coulombic efficiency >99.2% for 500 cycles. This work provides a cost-effective and scalable biomass-derived microporous carbon strategy to address the critical challenges of LCBs, offering valuable guidance for advanced separator design and accelerating the deployment of high-energy-density rechargeable batteries.

Efficient purification of flavonoids from bamboo shoot residues of Phyllostachys edulis by macroporous resin and their hypoglycemic activity

Yanbin Wang,Yalan Zhang,Junwen Cheng,Jiancheng Zhao,Rui Shi,Liang He,Qin Li,Yongjian Chen

The adsorption/desorption process of flavonoids obtained from bamboo shoots residues of Phyllostachys edulis (RPEFs) was established by resin screening, adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics and dynamic tests. Results indicated the Langmuir equation fairly fitted the isotherms data and the pseudo-second-order model accurately described its kinetic adsorption on HPD-500 resin. The optimal process was as follows: 2 mg/mL of solution, 2.8 BV feed volume under 2 BV/h flow rate for adsorption; 5 BV volume of 70 % ethanol with a flow rate of 2 BV/h for desorption. After enrichment, the flavonoids in RPEFs increased from 1.39 % to 37.34 %. The analysis of UPLC-TOF-MS/MS uncovered that the purified RPEFs were composed of four major flavonoids. It had potent hypoglycemic activity via PI3K/AKT pathway by upregulating the protein expression of PI3K, AKT, IRS-1, and GLUT4 in a dose-dependent manner based on HepG2-IR cells. Those results provide possible utilization of Phyllostachys edulis by-products in food additives.

In situ construction of antifungal surface on cellulose by ternary deep eutectic solvent and its application to Phyllostachys edulis

Qian Ao,Changhang Zhang,Xiaoyu Li,Yunchang He,Yu Zhang,Zhuo Zhao,Hailan Lian,Ying Zhou

Cellulosic materials have been widely applied in various fields such as construction, medicine, and new energy. However, the inherent structure of cellulose, composing of multiple hydroxyl groups, is highly susceptible to fungal degradation, thereby significantly limiting its high-value applications. Existing antifungal measures often fail to balance environmental friendliness and convenient preparation. Inspired by the antifungal properties of sulfated polysaccharides, this study utilized a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of sulfamic acid/1,3-propanediol/benzenesulfonic acid (S/P/B DES) to construct an intrinsically antifungal structure on cellulose via sulfation, making the preparation process more environmentally friendly and straightforward. Under the influence of the S/P/B DES, the hydroxyl groups at the C2, C3, and C6 positions of the cellulose pyranose ring underwent sulfation reactions, which imparted negative charge to the surface. The electrostatic interactions rendered the cellulose molecular chains more dispersed and amenable to rearrangement, combined with the acidolysis of the amorphous regions and the dissolution of the crystalline regions by the S/P/B DES, the cellulose chains spontaneously reorganized into a more compact structure. Using Material Studio demonstrated this structure would provide additional binding sites for fungi, thereby facilitating their adsorption and subsequent degradation, as a result, the antifungal performance of cellulose was significantly improved. Additionally, considering that Phyllostachys edulis contains over 50 wt% of cellulose and is highly susceptible to the degradation from fungal, which severely reduces its application value, this study further explored the potential surface application of the S/P/B DES in bamboo’s antifungal treatment.

Retarding effect of dietary fibers from bamboo shoot (Phyllostachys edulis) in hyperlipidemic rats induced by a high-fat diet

Qi Li,Xiangjun Fang,Hangjun Chen,Yanchao Han,Ruiling Liu,Weijie Wu,Haiyan Gao

The effects of the administration of bamboo shoot (Phyllostachys edulis) dietary fiber (BSDF) on high-fat diet (HDF) induced hyperlipidemia were studied with SD rat models. The results indicated that the body weight of rats and the mass of their adipose tissue were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased after the combination treatment of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) and insoluble dietary fiber (IDF). The levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly (P < 0.05) decreased by 30.20%, 53.28% and 35.63%, respectively, compared to those of the model group. The levels of serum alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, leptin, and insulin-like growth factor-1 of the SDF + IDF group were also significantly lower than those of the HDF model group (P < 0.05). Additionally, the perirenal fat percentage and body fat percentage in the SDF + IDF group were reduced by 31.61% and 25.09%, respectively. IDF exhibited better hypolipidemic ability than SDF in HFD induced rats at the same dose, while SDF and IDF showed a synergistic hyperlipidemia prevention effect. The mRNA expression levels of lipid synthesis genes SREBP-1c and FAS were significantly down-regulated by SDF + IDF treatment (P < 0.05). These results suggested that BSDF composed of IDF and SDF, with potential hypolipidemic effects, could be used in the production of health-beneficial food.

Emulsion Gel Stabilized by Young Bamboo Culm (Phyllostachys edulis) Fiber–Soy Protein Composite: Ball-Milling Effects on Stability and Lipid Digestion

Zixuan Zhou,Chenlu Luo,Shuang Bi,Xian Cui,Xiaoxiao Song

This study aimed to valorize discarded moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) culm tips, a fiber-rich food processing by-product, into a clean-label structuring ingredient with controlled lipid digestibility. Bamboo culm tip insoluble dietary fiber (BIDF) was ball-milled for 0 to 12 h and combined with soy protein isolate (SPI) to stabilize camellia oil-in-water fiber-network-stabilized emulsions at an oil fraction of 0.7; lipolysis was evaluated under INFOGEST 2.0. Ball milling for 9 h reduced BIDF to sub-10 μm particles and raised its three-phase contact angle from approximately 98° to 105° while preserving the cellulose I crystal form, and this milled fiber (SM-BIDF) was selected for emulsification. At 0.1% (w/v) SM-BIDF, emulsions showed the smallest droplet size (8.68 μm, vs. 18.4 μm for SPI-only), the highest |ζ|-potential (53.23 mV), and a gel network that remained stable for 14 days at 4 °C; this formulation also released the lowest free fatty acids (24.76% at 120 min), substantially below SPI-only controls. A concentration-dependent three-stage mechanism of interfacial reinforcement, network optimization, and excessive weakening was proposed to explain these observations. These results demonstrate that ball-milled bamboo culm tip IDF combined with SPI provides a sustainable dual-functional emulsifier that simultaneously stabilizes emulsions and retards lipid digestion.

Comparison of free, conjugated, and insoluble-bound phenolics and their antioxidant activities in oven-drying and freeze-drying bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) shoot tips

Jiaqiao Li,Wenting Li,Zeyuan Deng,Hongyan Li,Yan Yu,Bing Zhang

Bamboo( Phyllostachys edulis ) shoot was reported to be rich in phenolics. In the present study, free phenolics, conjugated phenolics, and insoluble-bound phenolics of oven-drying and freeze-drying bamboo shoot tips were extracted and separated, of which total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and their antioxidant activities were determined. Phenolics of different binding forms were qualitatively analyzed using HPLC–ESI–QqQ-MS. A total of 22, 41, and 28 compounds were confirmed or tentatively identified in free, conjugated, and insoluble-bound phenolic extraction, respectively. The majority of the identified compounds were organic acids and phenolic acids. Oven-drying samples exhibited higher TPC (10.53–24.92 mg GAE/100 g DW) and TFC (5.80–33.27 mg CE/100 g DW) values, and stronger antioxidant activities (DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP) than freeze-drying (TPC: 1.67–15.28 mg GAE/100 g DW, TFC: 1.43–29.05 mg CE/100 g DW). Insoluble-bound phenolics were the major contributor to the total antioxidant activity. The present study investigated the phenolics composition and antioxidant activities of different binding forms in bamboo shoot tip comprehensively, and provided available information for their high-value deep-processing.
