Recently, Pickering interfacial catalyst (PIC) was widely applied for liquid-liquid reactions, in view of not only intensifying the mass transfer through significant reducing both the drop sizes and the diffusion distance, but also supplying a flexible platform for the immobilization of valuable active sites. However, the restriction of the mobility of catalyst somehow decreases the activity of a catalyst. To obtain a promise reaction efficiency, we firstly report a synergistic method to enhance the biphasic reaction by Pickering emulsion and ultrasound concepts, targeted at efficient production of biodiesel. Response surface methodology based on Box-Behnken design was applied to optimize the reaction conditions, such as composition of catalyst, reaction temperature, ultrasound power, methanol to oil molar ratio and catalyst amount. An over 98% yield of biodiesel could be achieved within 2.5 hours by ultrasound assisted Pickering interfacial catalysis, which is over two times higher than that of ultrasound assisted homogeneous transesterification system. Besides, the ultrasound assisted Pickering emulsion shortened the reaction time by 3.6 fold when compared to mechanical stirring assisted Pickering emulsion system.

Delicate mediation on structural properties and surface wettability of catalysts is the key strategy towards a high catalytic performance but remains challenging. Herein, organic–inorganic hybrid Ti-containing mesoporous materials uniformly incorporated with methyl (C1-HMS-x) have been successfully fabricated by an in situ n-octane mediated strategy and used as catalysts in solvent-free oxidation desulfurization (ODS) with H 2 O 2 . Benefiting from the synergy of n-octane with organosilane, the C1-HMS-x showed more tetrahedrally coordinated Ti sites, remarkably increased specific surface area and pore volume. Such properties endow the catalyst with not only a higher intrinsic catalytic activity, but also excellent amphiphilicity and facilitated mass transfer. Besides, the catalyst also acts as a high-efficiency adsorbent for oxidized sulfur compounds, further boosting the ODS process. As a result, complete desulfurization of model oil containing 500 ppm dibenzothiophene (DBT) was achieved with a low ratio of O/S as 2.5 and catalyst dosage as 5 g/L. The C1-HMS-x also presented greatly enhanced desulfurization efficiency for refractory thiophene (Tp) and steric hindered 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT). More importantly, the mediation of morphology and wettability by n-octane enables the generated catalyst to be a superior Pickering interfacial catalyst for ODS without stirring. A higher ODS conversion was achieved in the oil-in-methanol emulsion system than that in methanol-in-oil system. The easier accessibility of active sites at emulsion interface for S-compound is responsible for the enhanced emulsion catalytic performance. Such mediation strategy and new catalytic system hold a great promise for next-generation green and sustainable chemistry.

Pickering emulsion systems provide potential platforms for simultaneously intensifying and catalyzing transesterification between triglyceride and methanol under static conditions. However, realizing static transesterification with high biodiesel yield is still challenging due to low emulsion stability at the reaction temperature. Here, a series of magnetically recyclable Pickering interfacial catalysts (PICs) with similar surface affinities but different densities were constructed as stabilizers of a soybean oil/methanol emulsion. The variations in the emulsion volume fraction and droplet size were comparatively studied and analyzed from the viewpoint of droplet settling and catalyst particle shedding. It is found that, except for surface affinity, PIC density also plays a pivotal role in emulsion stability owing to the non-negligible effect of gravity on catalyst adsorption in triglyceride/methanol emulsion (especially at elevated temperature). By reducing the density, finely improving the lipophilicity, and optimizing the addition amount of PIC, the obtained soybean oil/methanol emulsion can remain stable for at least 12 h at 60 °C, enabling static transesterification with a high biodiesel yield of 95.6%. Moreover, the best performing PIC can be reused for at least 7 cycles. This efficient static transesterification system offers a green strategy for biodiesel production.

Epoxidation of allyl chloride and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) carried out in heterogeneous catalytic systems suffer from poor reaction efficiency due to their heavy mass transfer resistance present at the liquid-liquid interface. Pickering interfacial catalysis (PIC) provides an elegant solution by involving the design of amphiphilic heterogeneous catalysts , which can act as emulsifiers simultaneously. In this study, interface-active polyoxometalate-loaded hyper-crosslinked nanoparticles (HCNPs) were designed. The structural properties of materials were characterized in detail by elemental analysis , Zeta potential , ICP-OES, SEM , TEM, BET, FT-IR, TGA , and XPS . The prepared nanoparticles can build efficient W/O PIC systems with allyl chloride and H 2 O 2 . Systematic experiments indicate that catalysts' surface properties, catalyst dosage, and water/oil volume ratio significantly affect the PIC system's catalytic activity and emulsion properties. Moreover, this PIC system maintains high stability after the reaction and can be reused for at least 8 cycles. Excitingly, these interface-active HCNPs can also efficiently promote allyl chloride epoxidation in the absence of solvent and external stirring, illustrating that this approach holds great potential for developing catalytic systems suitable for multiphase reactions.

Sucrose fatty acid esters are increasingly valued as multifunctional surfactants, nutraceuticals, and bacteriostats due to their emulsifying and antimicrobial properties. While enzymatic synthesis provides an eco-friendly route to high-purity esters, challenges remain in optimizing lipase activity, reusability, and mass transfer. This study introduces a novel edible biomaterials-based catalytic system: lipase immobilized within shellac nanoparticle-coated chitosan microgels (SCL) for synthesizing sucrose laurate via Pickering interfacial catalysis (PIC). SCL stabilized oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions, with sucrose and vinyl laurate partitioned into aqueous and oil phases, respectively. Structural characterization (SEM, CLSM, Cryo-SEM) revealed SCL's localization at the O/W interface, with preferential oil-phase immersion and ordered interfacial alignment. Optimized conditions yielded a conversion rate of 55.35 ± 1.88 %, and the immobilized lipase retained >80 % activity over four cycles. Purified via solvent extraction and chromatography, the product was confirmed as 6-sucrose monolaurate (through FT-IR, NMR, XRD, and TG-DSC). Comparative analysis demonstrated its higher air/water interfacial stabilization versus commercial sucrose monoesters, evidenced by lower critical micelle concentration ( cmc ), enhanced emulsifying/foaming capacity, and improved pH/thermal stability. Collectively, this SCL-based PIC system achieved sustainable synthesis of 6-sucrose monolaurate with exceptional enzyme recyclability, overcoming limitations in lipase stability and mass transfer, and produced a surfactant with superior properties.
