Lignocellulose nanocrystals from pineapple peel: Preparation, characterization and application as efficient Pickering emulsion stabilizers

Yuan Chen,Huan Zhang,Xin Feng,Liang Ma,Yuhao Zhang,Hongjie Dai

In this study, the pineapple peel treated with different degrees of delignification was used to isolate lignocellulose nanocrystals (LCNC) by sulfuric acid hydrolysis. Controlling delignification treatments can adjust the morphology and structure of pineapple peel and the retention of lignin, thereby achieving the regulation of the properties of LCNC, such as morphology, crystallinity, hydrophobicity and rheological properties. The results of atomic force microscope (AFM), confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), UV/visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the presence of lignin in LCNC, showing a rod-like structure with the distribution of lignin. Regulating delignification of pineapple peel can adjust the average length (310 ∼ 460 nm), diameter (19 ∼ 38 nm), crystallinity (61% ∼ 71%) and hydrophobicity (contact angle 84° ∼ 60°) of the obtained LCNC by acid hydrolysis, and influence the performance of its stabilized Pickering emulsions. This work confirms that the properties of LCNC can be controlled through adjusting delignification degree, possessing great significance for the high value utilization of lignocellulosic agricultural waste.

Interfacial Polymerization of Dopamine in a Pickering Emulsion: Synthesis of Cross-Linkable Colloidosomes and Enzyme Immobilization at Oil/Water Interfaces

Yanning Qu,Renliang Huang,Wei Qi,Rongxin Su,Zhimin He

Colloidosomes are promising carriers for immobilizing enzyme for catalytic purposes in aqueous/organic media. However, they often suffer from one or more problems regarding catalytic performance, stability, and recyclability. Here, we report a novel approach for the synthesis of cross-linkable colloidosomes by the selective polymerization of dopamine at oil/water interfaces in a Pickering emulsion. An efficient enzyme immobilization method was further developed by covalently bonding enzymes to the polydopamine (PDA) layer along with the formation of such colloidosomes with lipase as a model enzyme. In this enzyme system, the PDA layer served as a cross-linking layer and enzyme support for simultaneously enhancing the colloidosomes’ stability and improving surface availability of the enzymes for catalytic reaction. It was found that the specific activity of lipases immobilized on the colloidosome shells was 8 and 1.4 times higher than that of free lipase and encapsulated lipase positioned in the aqueous cores of colloidosomes, respectively. Moreover, the immobilized lipases demonstrated excellent operational stability and recyclability, retaining 86.6% of enzyme activity after 15 cycles. It is therefore reasonable to expect that this novel approach for enzyme immobilization has great potential to serve as an important technique for the construction of biocatalytic systems.

CTAB-assisted fabrication of well-shaped PDA-based colloidosomes

Liu Pin,Qi Chenze,Gao Yong

Colloidosomes have gained intensive attention in the past years due to their substantial applications in wide scopes involving encapsulation, catalysis, and drug delivery, etc. In this study, we depicted the templated fabrication of well-shaped colloidosomes with tunable shell thickness by Pickering emulsion at a mild condition. To this end, toluene-in-water Pickering emulsion stabilized by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)–modified polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles (PDA@CTAB) was prepared. After the covalent cross-linking of PDA nanoparticles assembled on the surface of an oil droplet through chemical reactions occurring in toluene phase, exclusive intra-colloidosomes were afforded. The shell thickness of colloidsomes could be roughly tuned by the adjustment of the amount of the reactive monomers in the oil phase. Our investigations revealed that CTAB was critical for the successful fabrication of well-shaped colloidosomes. Otherwise, only irregular structures were obtained if pristine PDA–stabilized Pickering emulsion was applied. The current strategy could enable hydrophobic cargo, such as 10-hydroxycamptothecin to be encapsulated while colloidosomes were created. The release behavior of the encapsulated cargoes was also investigated. CTAB was necessary for the templated fabrication of well-shaped colloidosomes by PDA-stabilized oil-in-water Pickering emulsion

Preparation and Characterization of a Novel Natural Quercetin Self-Stabilizing Pickering Emulsion

Shenglan Lu,Xueying Li,Xunran Wei,Caihuan Huang,Jie Zheng,Shiyi Ou,Tao Yang,Fu Liu

In contrast to their well-known physiological properties, phytochemicals, such as flavonoids, have been less frequently examined for their physiochemical properties (e.g., surface activity). A natural quercetin self-stabilizing Pickering emulsion was fabricated and characterized in the present study. The antisolvent precipitation method was used to modify quercetin (in dihydrate form), and the obtained particles were characterized by light microscope, atom force microscope, XRD, and contact angle. The antisolvent treatment was found to reduce the particle size, crystallinity, and surface hydrophobicity of quercetin. We then examined the effects of the antisolvent ratio, particle concentration, and oil fraction on the properties of the quercetin particle-stabilized emulsions. In addition, increasing the antisolvent ratio (1:1~1:10) effectively improved the emulsification performance of the quercetin particles. The emulsion showed good storage stability, and the particle size of the emulsion decreased with the rising particle concentration and increased with the rising oil phase ratio. The findings indicate that natural quercetin treated with antisolvent method has a good ability to stabilize Pickering emulsion, and this emulsion may have good prospective application potential for the development of novel and functional emulsion foods. Keywords:quercetin;Pickering;antisolvent precipitation;crystalline

High efficiency desalination of wasted salted duck egg white and processing into food-grade pickering emulsion stabilizer

Mingyang Du,Zhigang Sun,Zengnan Liu,Yue Yang,Ziyuan Liu,Yexuan Wang,Bin Jiang,Zhibiao Feng,Chunhong Liu

Salted duck egg white (SDEW) is difficult to convert into high-value products for the high salt content and unpleasant odor, which leads to the loss of high-quality protein resources. In this work, for the first time, the freeze-thaw treatment was used for protein desalination to achieve complete desalination of SDEW. After SDEW prepared into hydrogel by microwave-assisted hydrothermal (125 °C, 500 W) in only 12 min, repeated freeze-thaw treatments made the hydrogel porous at the molecular level from the inside, which accelerated the outward migration of salt, thereby increasing the desalination efficiency. After ultrasonic dispersion, completely desalted SDEW, as a food-grade Pickering emulsion stabilizer, can stabilize Pickering emulsion at a particle concentration of 0.5–3.0%, oil phase fraction of 0.20–0.80 and pH value of 3.0–11.0 for at least 28 days. Overall, the findings provide a novel, simple and efficient method for SDEW desalination, and confirm that desalted SDEW is a low-cost but efficient food-grade Pickering emulsion stabilizer, which extend the potential commercial applications for SDEW in food industry.

Limin Wang,Qianfei Jia,Yuan Li,Hui Zhao,Zijian Wu

This study investigated the chitosan (CS)-octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) starch complex as a stabilizer for Pickering emulsions. The effects of OSA concentration (0.5wt%-2.5wt%) and viscosity (OSA1, OSA2, OSA3) on the stability and physiochemical properties of emulsion were examined. The results showed that CS-OSA with 2.0wt% concentration OSA stabilized emulsion exhibited optimal emulsifying capacity. Contact angle analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and X-difference diffractometer (XRD) were utilized to explore the stabilized mechanism of CS-OSA on emulsion, results confirmed the CS and OSA interactions, and strong adsorption of CS-OSA particles at the oil-water interface. Furthermore, CS-OSA stabilized emulsion loading curcumin were assessed, results showed that curcumin loaded emulsion exhibited high stability and better antioxidant capacity than free CS during 10-day storage. The overall study offers valuable insights into the utilization of CS-OSA emulsifiers in delivery application for lipophilic bioactive molecules.

Preparation and surface structure study of novel asymmetric Janus carbon dots

Yingdong Zhang,Lin Wang,Zhiwei Yang,Dongmei Yue

Janus particles, heterogeneous bifacial particles, have gained significant interest in materials science and chemical engineering. Nanoscale fabrication of these particles poses notable challenges. Although mature techniques exist for creating Janus particles from inorganic and polymeric materials, similar advancements in carbon dots (CDs) remain unreported. This paper introduces a novel approach using a liquid–liquid interface method to specifically modify CDs suspended at the biphasic interface, resulting in the formation of carbon dots with a unique Janus-type surface distribution (J-CDs). The surface structure was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, elemental analysis and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. By correlating their fluorescence properties with time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations, the relationship between the fluorescent characteristics of J-CDs and their asymmetric Janus surface structures was established, further confirming their unique Janus configuration. Water contact angle tests showed that J-CDs exhibit hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties that differ distinctly from those of traditional amphiphilic CDs when suspended in various solvents and dried on a silicon substrate, underscoring their novel structure. Enhanced surface properties were demonstrated through the stabilization of Pickering emulsions and fabrication of polystyrene microspheres, showcasing the potential of J-CDs to modulate surface characteristics for diverse applications.

Study in the experimental manipulation of Janus particle synthesis via emulsion-based method

Zhenxin Chu,Bin Zhong,Wanrong Zhou,Pengcheng Cui,Jiale Gu,Bingbing Tian,Oluseyi S. Olasoju,Xiaohua Zhang,Wei Sun

This study focused on the investigation in the influencing factors of the Granick’s method for Janus particle synthesis , in which selective modification of colloidosome made from a Pickering emulsion-based process was the essential strategy. Homogenizer with high shearing forces was introduced to make stable emulsion. With increased stirring speed of the homogenizer, the sizes of the colloidosomes decrease. And the stirring time of the homogenizer and the paraffin melting point have also been proved to have influence on the size distribution of colloidosomes as well as on the assembly morphology of the silica particles on the surface of the wax sphere. 160 s of the working time and the melting point of 53−57 °C were tested respectively to be the optimal condition for making the ideal colloidosomes. By using the optimized experimental conditions, silica particles with diameters of 200, 400, and 600 nm all had success in making fine colloidosomes. The Janus character were characterized by demonstrating the abilities of interfacial assembly and anisotropic structural growth of the resultant products from the optimized procedure. The research provides the conclusions of optimal experimental conditions as references for achieving scalable synthesis of Janus particles with satisfactory quality. This research could serve as a guidance to effective implementation of Granick’s method of Janus particle synthesis.

A pesticide sustained-release microcapsule from cellulose nanocrystal stabilized Pickering emulsion template

Cai-xia Yang,Jun Li,Yu-qing Zhang,Chao Wu,De-qiang Li

Efficient utilization of pesticides has presented various advantages in the ecological environment, food safety, and agricultural sustainability. Pesticide microcapsule could significantly improve the pesticide utilization ratio, and thus, we prepared a sustained-release microcapsule from cellulose nanocrystal (CNCs) stabilized Pickering emulsion template. The NaCl was added to overcome the strong electrostatic repulsion among CNCs for forming a stable oil-in-water (O/W) CNCs-based Pickering emulsion template, followed by crosslinking with hexamethylene diisocyanate on the interface. UV–vis and zeta-potential were used to characterize the as-prepared Pickering emulsion, and the stability and emulsion fraction were calculated. Results indicated that NaCl contributed to the stability of Pickering emulsion, even at a low concentration. The obtained CNCs-based microcapsule was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TG-DTG, and three-phase contact angles. The microcapsule presented an encapsulation efficiency of 96.76% and sustained release of the imidacloprid for more than 82 h. Results indicated the potential for loading and sustained release of imidacloprid, which is beneficial to the environment, food, and agriculture.

Novel photic and magnetic double responsive Pickering interfacial solid catalysts for biodiesel production

Xiaotong Lu,Shengnan Li,Limin Wang,Sujuan Huang,Zhongqiu Liu,Yujing Liu,Anguo Ying

The prime purpose of this work is to prepare a novel kind of Pickering interfacial solid catalysts for biodiesel production to meet the requirements of highly efficiency and environmental benign. To achieve this goal, the core–shell P[xSPA-yDABCO]@SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 composite materials with a shell of photo-responsive and base catalytic sites were manufactured by means of layer-by-layer fabrication method. The modified materials, entirely characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and magnetization versus magnetic (VSM) techniques, demonstrated sufficient catalytic active sites and photo-responsive sites. Among all the so-prepared catalysts, P[3SPA-2DABCO]@SiO 2 @Fe 3 O 4 performs extremely well and can stabilize soybean oil-in-methanol Pickering emulsion for 24 h, achieving a biodiesel yield up to 98.2% at a catalyst dosage of 5 wt% after the reaction time of 5 h at 60 °C. Furthermore, the double responsive solid catalyst can be readily separated from the mixture of reaction by an external magnet and UV irradiation, and still presented superior catalytic activity after 6 cycles.

Nanoparticle-stabilized encapsulation of borneol and citral: Physicochemical characteristics, storage stability, and enhanced antibacterial activities

Wen Wang,Zhihui Ren,Li Wang,Ying Cai,Hang Ma,Liming Fang,Jianyu Su

Combinations of phytochemical(s) and engineered nanoparticles have attracted immense research interest due to their superior antimicrobial effects against contaminations. Herein, a Pickering emulsion is developed with capsulized phytochemicals including borneol and citral (BC–Cap) stabilized by hydrophilic amine-functionalized silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 ─NH 2 NPs). The droplet sizes of Pickering emulsion were 5.2 ± 1.4 µm under the condition that the concentrations of SiO 2 ─NH 2 NPs ranged from 0.6 to 1.2 wt.%, and the emulsion showed desirable stability during storage at 40°C for 365 days. In addition, the antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of the Pickering emulsion were investigated. The antibacterial effect of BC–Cap increased by two- to fourfold compared with citral or borneol alone. Treatment of BC/BC–Cap for 4 h eliminated the formation of biofilms generated by Listeria monocytogenes (at 5/1.25 mg/ml; 2 × MIC concentration) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (at 5/2.5 mg/ml; 2 × MIC concentration). Further mechanistic studies revealed that the antibiofilm effects of BC–Cap were attributed to its ability to increase the porosity and lytic effects on the cell membrane of bacteria. Findings from the current study support the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of BC–Cap Pickering emulsion as a promising food additive. Practical Application The Pickering emulsion has potential applications as bacteriostatic agent in packaging materials and general surface disinfectant. The combination of borneol and citral is stabilized by hydrophilic amine-functionalized silica nanoparticles (SiO 2 ─NH 2 NPs). With the synergistic effects of borneol and citral, the Pickering emulsion shows a promising elimination effect against the formation of biofilms produced by Listeria monocytogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa .

Synergistic effects of AlOOH and sodium benzenesulfonate on the generation of Pickering emulsions and their application for enhanced oil recovery

Han Jia,Juan He,Yingbiao Xu,Tingyi Wang,Lingyu Zhang,Bowen Wang,Xincan Jiang,Xu Li,Xingyuan Zhang,Kaihe Lv

The surfactant assisted nanoparticle stabilized emulsions exhibit the wide potential application and attract more and more attention. In the present study, the flake-like hydrophilic AlOOH nanoparticles were employed to stabilize Pickering emulsions with the assist of slightly amphiphilic sodium benzenesulfonate (SBS) molecules. The measurements of FTIR spectra , three-phase contact angle, zeta potential and Z-average diameter adequately testified the successful adsorption of SBS on AlOOH nanoparticles. Both slightly amphiphilic SBS and highly hydrophilic AlOOH nanoparticles could hardly stabilize emulsions, whereas the SBS modified AlOOH nanoparticles exhibited distinguished emulsifying capacity, which was reflected via the Turbiscan Stability Index and the reference values of backscattered light intensity . Batch adsorption experiments were conducted and the adsorption data was better fitted to the Langmuir model, suggesting that SBS could form monolayer adsorption on AlOOH nanoparticles. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and rheological measurements demonstrated that the functionalized AlOOH nanoparticles could spontaneously adsorb at the oil/water interface to form an interfacial film and generate a three-dimensional network structure in the continuous phase to effectively prevent droplet coalescence in normal and harsh conditions. Furthermore, SBS/AlOOH stabilized O/W emulsions presented significant displacement performance (tertiary oil recovery of 18.87%) in core flooding experiments. Microscopic visualization tests showed that the emulsions could block high permeability channels and enlarge the sweep area. This study opens up the possibility of adopting low surface-active molecules and hydrophilic nanoparticles to stabilize Pickering emulsions for enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
