Electrode reaction of Pr(III) and coreduction of Pr(III) and Pb(II) on W electrode in eutectic LiCl-KCl

Li Mei,Sun Zhongxuan,Guo Dan,Han Wei,Sun Yang,Yang Xiaoguang,Zhang Milin

The electrode reaction of Pr(III) and coreduction of Pb(II) and Pr(III) were studied on an inert W electrode in eutectic LiCl-KCl to extract Pr from molten salt. The electrode process kinetic of Pr(III) on W electrode was firstly explored employing cyclic voltammetry (CV) and Tafel technique, such as the diffusion coefficient of Pr(III) in eutectic LiCl-KCl and the exchange current density ( j 0 ) for Pr(III)/Pr(0) couple and the electrode reaction activation energy. Then, various electrochemical techniques were used to investigate the coreduction of Pb(II) and Pr(III). Four cathode current peaks ascribed to the formation of Pr x Pb y intermetallic compounds were detected, which indicated that the Pr could deposit on pre-deposited Pb film, react with Pb, and form Pr x Pb y intermetallic compounds. Furthermore, the electrolytic products formed by galvanostatic electrolysis were characterized by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray diffraction, which illustrated the formation of PrPb 3 intermetallic compound in LiCl-KCl-PbCl 2 -PrCl 3 melt.

Solvent extraction of Ce(III) and Pr(III) with P507 using SiC foam as a static mixer

Ye Zhang,Yong Gao,Peng Wang,Duo Na,Zhenming Yang,Jinsong Zhang

Extraction reactor is a major research area of interest within the field of rare earths extraction and separation. SiC foam offers excellent material characteristics as well as three-dimensional (3-D) reticulated structure; however, very little research has been carried out on its application in extraction reactor so far. In this work, a static mixer reactor based on SiC foam was designed and demonstrated to extract and separate Ce(III) and Pr(III) from nitric acid media by using 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) as extractant. The structure–performance relationship between SiC foam and extraction performance was studied by experiment combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The experiment data are in good agreement with the simulation results. Contrast experiment by using a Kenics mixer was carried out, and SiC foam shows better extraction and mass transfer performance. Using the optimal structural SiC foam (pore size D  = 2.3 mm, open porosity ε  = 85%, foam length L  = 80 mm), high extraction efficiency η (Pr(III): 94.6%, Ce(III): 88.5%) and separation factor β (2.27) between Ce(III) and Pr(III) is achieved at a high total throughput of 200 mL/min. Besides, overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient K L a of Pr(III) and Ce(III) are 0.519 and 0.378 s −1  at the residence time τ of 3.6 s, respectively, which reach the high level of microchannel reactors and are better than conventional extractors and other static mixers. SiC foam is found to be applicable as a static mixer for efficient and high-throughput extraction and separation of rare earths.

Evaluating the potential risk by probing the site-selective binding of rutin-Pr(III) complex to human serum albumin

Chunlei Zhu,Fengru Liu,Yunlong Wei,Fan Zhang,Ting Pan,Yingwang Ye,Yizhong Shen

Having reported that rare earth elements displayed potential toxicity i n vivo , often be found in soil, plants and etc. , which might be easily chelated with the natural functional molecule rutin to form rutin metal complexes, ultimately entering the human body by means of food chain . However, few reports paid the attention on the toxicology of the complexes consisting of rutin with rare earth ions. Here, we focused on the potential toxicity by probing the site-selective binding of the rutin-rare earth ions complexes to human serum albumin (HSA). As a proof-of-concept, we selected Pr 3+ as the representative to conjugate with rutin to form rutin-Pr(III) complex, which was further applied to interact with HSA in aqueous solution. The results exhibited that the rutin-Pr(III) complex primary bound to the hydrophobic cavity at site II (subdomain IIIA) of HSA through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals force . Through the thermomechanical analysis, we found this binding process was spontaneous because of the negative Δ G. We believe that this work may offer a new insight into understanding the physiological effects ( e.g. toxicology) of rutin and rare earth ions, which could be helpful to guide their rational use in the agriculture and environment-related industries.

Luminescent Pr(III)-Based Coordination Polymer: Syntheses, Structures, N2 and CO2 Adsorption Properties

Liu Qiang,Liu Yuqi,Zhang Qingqing,Wang Xinying,Li Wei

A new Pr(III)-based metal organic framework with formula {[Pr 2 (C 8 H 3 O 6 N)(SO 4 ) 2 ]·5H 2 O} n was hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by techniques of single crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectra (IR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and luminescent measurements. X-ray crystal structure analyses reveal that complex 1 is binuclear structure and all Pr(III) atoms show a coordination number of nine with a tricapped trigonal prismatic coordination geometry. Throughout the molecular structure, this lanthanide metal–organic frameworks exhibits a 3D architecture built by the 1D double-stranded chains of Pr ions linked by the 5-nitroisophthalic acid ligand and 2D Pr–SO 4 2− grid. In addition, the fluorescence, nitrogen adsorption properties and carbon dioxide adsorption properties of complex 1 were also investigated. The results indicate that the complex is not only a luminescent and mesoporous material, but also a potential material for selective absorption of carbon dioxide.

High-throughput extraction and separation of Ce(III) and Pr(III) using a chaotic advection microextractor

Tingliang Xie,Minxuan Chen,Cong Xu,Jing Chen

Microextractors are known to provide high mass transfer rates for the extraction and separation of rare-earth elements (REEs). High-throughput microextractors are essential for industrial-scale production of REEs, but few practical studies have been conducted to date. In this work, a chaotic advection microextractor, i.e., a three-stage microextractor, was designed and demonstrated to extract Pr(III) and Ce(III) efficiently from nitric acid media at high throughputs by using 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) and sulfonated kerosene as an extraction agent and a diluent, respectively. Flow visualization experiments showed that the dispersed phase could be effectively broken into small droplets owing to vortex and recirculation flows. Microextraction experiments performed under optimal extraction conditions indicated that at low throughputs, the concentration ratio D , extraction efficiency E , and separation factor β decreased with an increase in the throughput, whereas at high throughputs, D , E , and β increased with an increase in the throughput. An extraction efficiency close to that of co-current balanced extraction was successfully achieved, even at a high total throughput of 100 mL/min and a rather short residence time of 0.029 s. Thus, the chaotic advection microextractor features a high throughput and high extraction efficiency, which are appropriate for the high-efficiency extraction and separation of REEs.

Efficient Recovery of Rare Earth Elements (Pr(III) and Tm(III)) From Mining Residues Using a New Phosphorylated Hydrogel (Algal Biomass/PEI)

Chunlin He,Khalid A.M. Salih,Yuezhou Wei,Hamed Mira,Adel A.-H. Abdel-Rahman,Khalid Z. Elwakeel,Mohammed F. Hamza,Eric Guibal

With the target of recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from acidic leachates, a new functionalized hydrogel was designed, based on the phosphorylation of algal/polyethyleneimine beads. The functionalization strongly increased the sorption efficiency of the raw material for Pr(III) and Tm(III). Diverse techniques were used for characterizing this new material and correlating the sorption performances and mechanisms to the physicochemical structure of the sorbent. First, the work characterized the sorption properties from synthetic solutions with the usual procedures (study of pH effect, uptake kinetics, sorption isotherms, metal desorption and sorbent recycling, and selectivity from multi-element solutions). Optimum pH was found close to 5; sorption isotherms were fitted by the Langmuir equation (maximum sorption capacities close to 2.14 mmol Pr g−1and 1.57 mmol Tm g−1). Fast uptake kinetics were modeled by the pseudo-second order rate equation. The sorbent was highly selective for REEs against alkali-earth and base metals. The sorbent was remarkably stable for sorption and desorption operation (using 0.2 M HCl/0.5 M CaCl2solutions). The sorbent was successfully applied to the leachates of Egyptian ore (pug leaching) after a series of pre-treatments (precipitation steps), sorption, and elution. The selective precipitation of REEs using oxalic acid allows for the recovery of a pure REE precipitate. Keywords:rare earth elements;sorption isotherms;uptake kinetics;functionalization of bio-based sorbent;metal desorption;sorbent recycling;treatment of ore leachate
