As anionic insertion pseudopotential electrode, perovskite oxides have attracted more and more attention due to their high electrical conductivity and oxygen vacancy concentration. In this study, double perovskite PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ (PBCO) oxide was synthesized by simple sol-gel method. Phase composition, porous structure and surface chemistry were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD) curves were used to explore the electrochemical performance. The tests show that the PBCO electrodes exhibit good capacitance performance with the high specific capacity value of 428.2 C g −1 at 1 mV s −1 . Furthermore, the capacitance retention still achieves 93% after 2000 cycles, showing excellent cycling stability. This paper analyzes the capacitance behavior of PBCO electrodes, and demonstrates the insertion mechanism that oxygen vacancies are filled by oxygen ions. All these prove that PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ has potential applications in supercapacitors .

The effect of firing temperature on the microstructure and performance of PrBaCo 2 O 5+ δ cathodes on Sm 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 1.9 electrolytes fabricated by spray deposition-firing processes is systematically studied by various characterization techniques. The grain size, porosity and particle connection of the electrode as well as the physical contact between the PrBaCo 2 O 5+ δ and Sm 0.2 Ce 0.8 O 1.9 layers are influenced differently by the firing temperature. The area specific resistances (ASRs) of the various PrBaCo 2 O 5+ δ cathodes are measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in both symmetrical two-electrode and three-electrode configurations. The lowest ASR and cathode overpotential are achieved at a firing temperature of 1000 °C. Two main oxygen reduction reaction processes are proposed according to the oxygen partial pressure dependence of the electrode ASR. The rate-determining step is transmitted from a charge-transfer process at low firing temperatures to a non-charge-transfer process at high firing temperatures. A fuel cell with the PrBaCo 2 O 5+ δ cathode fired at an optimal temperature of 1000 °C delivers the attractive peak power density of 835 mW cm −2 at 650 °C, while this density is much lower for other firing temperatures. This result suggests the firing temperature of PrBaCo 2 O 5+ δ electrodes should be carefully optimized for practical applications.

One challenge facing the development of high-performance cathodes for solid oxide fuel cells is the slow oxygen reduction kinetics. Here, we report a dual-phase cathode material, double perovskite structure PrBaCo2O5+δ (PBC) and fluorite structure Gd0.1Ce0.9O2−δ (GDC), successfully synthesized using a one-pot method, with remarkable oxygen reduction reaction activity and low polarization resistance under IT-SOFC service conditions. The coherent interface structure is formed between PBC and GDC particles, which is beneficial to alleviate the lattice thermal expansion. The introduction of the cubic GDC phase can guide the oxygen transport among PBC particles with different orientations. When measured in a symmetrical cell configuration in the air at 600 °C, PBC–10 wt% GDC electrode shows an area-specific resistance of 0.394 Ω cm2, which is about 78% lower than that of bare PBC electrode under the same situations. The charge transfer process on the electrode surface is the rate-limiting step based on the dependence of polarization resistance at different oxygen partial pressures, where the impedance analysis technique, the distribution of relaxation times (DRT), is devoted to describing the complex electrode reaction processes. The GDC introduction significantly decreases the charge transfer resistance of the PBC–GDC composite cathode. The maximum power density of lab-scale electrolyte-supported cell with PBC–10 wt% GDC cathode reaches 1302, 938, 549 and 235 mW cm−2 at 850, 750, 650 and 550 °C, respectively. Our results demonstrate that such dual-phase composites PBC–GDC produced in one step can be considered a promising cathode material for intermediate/low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

As a mixed ion electronic conducting oxide , PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ is regarded as a promising solid oxide fuel cell cathode. To further improve PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ cathode's oxygen reduction reaction activity, porosity graded PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ -based cathode is prepared by screen printing technology. With a porous top and a comparative denser base, oxygen ions concentration and oxygen gas concentration in the cathode can be graded distributed. This concentration gradient works as driven force which can enhance the cathode catalytic activity . And distribution of relaxation time analysis is carried out to investigate cathodes performance optimization mechanism, the result shows that gradient porous PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ cathode's area specific resistance value is much lower than the traditional homogeneous porosity PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ cathode. The scaffold porosity modification promotes the cathode oxygen ions transfer processes without obvious impact on the cathode oxygen surface processes.

Solid oxide fuel cells are promising technologies for renewable energy conversion, yet their practical deployment requires oxygen electrodes that simultaneously support rapid oxygen-ion transport and sustained high-activity oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysis. However, constructing such a microchemical environment remains a persistent challenge for perovskite oxides. Here, it is demonstrated that Cl − incorporation into PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ partially replaces lattice oxygen, inducing localized metal–oxygen electronic states, enhanced lattice distortion, and Pr 3+ intermixing into BaO layers, collectively generating 3D fast pathways for oxygen-ion diffusion. More significantly, it is revealed for the first time that Cl − preferentially segregates at the surface, forming an amorphous layer that creates an adaptive ORR interface and effectively overcomes the long-standing issue of surface passivation. As a result, Cl − -engineered PrBaCo 2 O 5+δ achieves a 3–5-fold increase in ORR activity relative to the parent oxide and exhibits outstanding durability at 750 °C, transforming ≈15.1% degradation over 100 h into a ≈2.7% performance gain. This work establishes a halogen-mediated mechanism for tailoring perovskite microchemistry, challenges the prevailing view that halogens merely stabilize oxide lattices, demonstrates one of the most pronounced catalytic enhancements reported to date, and offers a broadly applicable strategy for designing advanced oxygen electrodes.
