In this study, pretilachlor was encapsulated into polyurea microcapsules prepared by water-initiated polymerization of polyaryl polymethylene isocyanate and eventually made into pretilachlor microcapsules suspension (PMS). We used response surface methodology (RSM) combined with the Box–Behnken design (BBD) model to optimize the formulation of PMS. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of PMS was investigated with respect to three independent variables including wall material dosage (X1), emulsifier dosage (X2), and polymerization stirring speed (X3). The results showed that the regression equation model had a satisfactory accuracy in predicting the EE of PMS. To achieve an optimal condition for PMS preparation, the dose of wall material was set to 5%, the dose of emulsifier was set to 3.5% and the polymerization stirring speed was set to 200 rpm. The EE of PMS was up to 95.68% under the optimized condition, and the spherical shape with smooth surface morphology was observed. PMS was also proven to have delayed release capability and in vivo herbicidal activity against barnyard grass [Echinochloa crusgalli (L.) Beauv.] with an LC50 value of 274 mg/L. Furthermore, PMS had efficient weed management compared to commercially available 30% pretilachlor emulsifier (PE), showing a promising potential application for weeding paddy fields.

In this study, Pretilachlor polyurea microencapsulate suspension (PMS) with effective controlled release function was carefully prepared. Under the optimal conditions, wall material PM-200 dosage 4%, emulsifier T-60 dosage 4% with S-20 as solvent, the prepared PMS was demonstrated to have encapsulation efficiency approaching to 95.27 ± 0.57 % and high suspension rates of 97.33 ± 0.49 %. Afterwards, PMS was proved to possess average release rate reached to 85.56 %, 55.46 % and 15.85 % respectively in acidic, basic and natural medium. Subsequently, the herbicidal activity of PMS on barnyard grass and the growth safety of rice were evaluated. PMS showed enhanced herbicidal activity against barnyard grass and had lower toxicity to rice growth compared with technical pretilachlor at dose 270−540 g (a.i.)/hm 2 . In addition, the use safety of PMS was validated to be comparable to that of commercially available pretilachlor emulsifiable concentrate containing additive safener at dose 270−540 g (a.i.)/hm 2 . Moreover, inhibitory effect of PMS on rice growth was demonstrated to completely eliminated by cooperatively treatment with fenclorim. It was concluded that PMS had enhanced herbicidal activity and application safety, meeting the requirements of minimizing adverse effects of the herbicide on the environment, and enjoying a great application potential in agriculture.

A sensitive and efficient fluorescence sensor based on dual-emission molecularly imprinted polymers (Dual-em-MIPs) was successfully developed using the random forest (RF) machine-learning algorithm for the rapid detection of pretilachlor. SiO 2 coatings on red-emitting CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (r-SiO 2 @QDs) as intermediate light-emitting components are non-selective for pretilachlor, whereas molecularly imprinted layers coated with blue-emitting nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQD S ) are selective. Fluorescence images of the Dual-em-MIPs were acquired. The red (R), green (G), and blue (B) color values of the image were analyzed using an RF algorithm, and the classifier was trained using 103 fluorescent images for automatic analyses. Under optimized conditions, an excellent linear relationship between the sensor and pretilachlor was obtained in the range of 0.001–5.0 mg/L (R 2 , 0.9958). Additionally, the satisfactory recoveries of Dual-em-MIPs ranged between 92.2 % and 107.6 % for the real samples, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) under 6.5 %. The satisfactory recoveries of the RF model based on the fluorescence sensor were 84.2–108.2 % with the RSD under 6.4 %. Overall, the proposed fluorescence sensor based on Dual-em-MIPs and machine learning methods was successfully used to determine pretilachlor in the environment and in aquatic products.

In this study, the crude extract of natural Loropetalum chinense (LoE) was prepared using a simple ethanol leaching approach. Preliminary evaluations of the safening effect of LoE in both agar and soil media demonstrated its ability to protect rice seedlings from damage induced by the herbicide pretilachlor (Pre). Specifically, treatment with LoE at 50 mg/L resulted in a 40.35% increase in root length and a 25.11% increase in plant height. In contrast, treatment at 100 mg/L led to a 36.85% increase in fresh weight, demonstrating effectiveness comparable to that of the commercial safener fenclorim (Fen). Moreover, compared to rice seedlings treated with Pre alone, LoE significantly increased the levels of glutathione (GSH) and enhanced the activities of several important enzymes: glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). The mechanism of action for LoE appears to involve enhancing GST activity to accelerate the metabolism of Pre and improving herbicide tolerance by activating antioxidant enzymes. Overall, LoE shows promise as a potential eco-friendly, plant-derived herbicide safener candidate for pretilachlor. For practical commercial application, further efforts should focus on (i) clarifying the phytochemical profile of LoE extracts, and (ii) conducting in-depth assessments of LoE’s mechanisms of action, including studies on degradation kinetics and metabolite formation.

Organo-layered double hydroxides (OLDHs) are widely used as slow-release carriers for drugs but are rarely used in controlled drug release. To develop slow-release substrates of pretilachlor with excellent controlled release properties, OLDH hybrids were prepared by intercalating different masses of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) into MgAl-LDHs. The underlying structural characteristics were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle measurements. Also, the adsorption capacity and release properties of OLDHs were explored by batch adsorption isotherms, adsorption kinetics, and release kinetics to reveal the structural effects of OLDHs on the release of pretilachlor. The results showed that the release of pretilachlor from OLDHs was dominated by Fickian diffusion and was closely related to the adsorption capacity and permeability of the matrix. The intercalation of SDS enhanced the hydrophobicity of LDHs, resulting in a higher adsorption capacity for pretilachlor and a lower permeability. Furthermore, as the SDS loading amount increased from 0.5 to 4.0 g, the adsorption capacity of the OLDHs was further enhanced (kF value increased from 2.52 to 12.83), while the permeability (d001/foc value) reversed, decreasing from 0.21 to 0.09. The release kinetics demonstrated that the release rate of pretilachlor from OLDHs was significantly lower compared to pure LDHs and showed a continuous decrease with increasing SDS loading amounts. The release time of 50% (T50) pretilachlor from OLDHs with SDS loading amounts of 25%, 50%, 100%, and 200% of the anion exchange capacity was 4.78, 8.28, 25.4, and 45.34 times longer than the release time from pure LDHs. This displayed a strong curvilinear relationship with the adsorption rate constant kF and permeability d001/foc and a good linear relationship with the added amount of SDS. These findings highlight the potential of OLDHs in preparing pretilachlor controlled release formulations.

Pretilachlor is a chloroacetamide herbicide mainly used for weed and broadleaf weed control in rice, that is widely utilized in China. In order to detect the residue of pretilachlor in the environment and food, a highly sensitive and specific monoclonal antibody (mAb) against pretilachlor was prepared, and the half maximum inhibitory concentration (IC50) of the monoclonal antibody was validated to be 31.47 ± 2.35 μg/L. An indirect competitive ELISA (ic-ELISA) based on the antibody with a linear range of 6.25~100 μg/L was developed. The specificity of the antibody was explained by computer simulations and experimental validation. The mAb exhibited negligible cross-reactivity towards alachlor, acetochlor, propisochlor, butachlor, and metalaxyl, and the limits of detection (LOD) for pretilachlor in lake, rice, and soil samples were 4.83~5.23 μg/L. The recoveries of all samples were 78.3~91.3%. The reliability of the ic-ELISA method for residue detection of pretilachlor in the environment and grains was confirmed using high performance liquid chromatography.

Pretilachlor (Pre) is an efficient and broad-spectrum pre-seedling herbicide; however, the excessive use of the Pre traditional formulation causes phytotoxicity to rice seedlings (Oryza sativa), toxicity to soil organisms, and great environmental pollution. 4-(Dichloroacetyl)-1-oxa-4-azospiro[4,5]decane (AD-67) is a herbicide safener and it can reduce the phytotoxicity of herbicides to plants, but it degrades slowly in the aquatic environment, and extensive application leads to a wide range of negative environmental impacts. To reduce the frequency of application and increase the safety of non-target organisms, for the first time, an herbicide-safener nano-double controlled release system AD-67@Pre@ZIF-67 was successfully constructed. Pre was encapsulated in ZIF-67, metal–organic framework (MOF), and the safener AD-67 was adsorbed by self-assembly on the surface of the MOF. The release rates of Pre and AD-67 increased with the decrease in the pH value. With the lowest pH value (5.8), Pre and AD-67 were released 57% and 78% rapidly in the first 2 h, respectively, then were slowly released, and the overall releases were 86% and 96% on the 7th day, respectively. Hence, the safener AD-67 can be released quickly to protect the rice seedlings from injury caused by Pre, while Pre can release slowly from nano-double controlled release for a longer duration and show lower phytotoxicity to rice. Compared to the pre-treatment, the relative root length, relative plant height, and relative fresh weight values of rice seedlings treated with AD-67@Pre@ZIF-67 were increased by 50%, 40%, and 62%, respectively. AD-67@Pre@ZIF-67 also had lower acute toxicity to earthworms (Eisenia foetida), with the 24 h and 48 h LC50 values, which were 6 times and 5 times than that of Pre, respectively. The results showed that AD-67@Pre@ZIF-67 did not only improve the herbicidal activity to target weed barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgalli) but also met the requirements of minimizing the adverse effects of herbicides on crop plants and environments. This shows the great application prospects in modern agriculture.
