The photocatalysis of graphtic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) material has been widely used for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants. However, g-C 3 N 4 still has some drawbacks, such as the high recombination of photo-induced electron–hole pairs and weak absorption of light irradiation. To further improve the photodegradation performance of g-C 3 N 4 , a novel composite photocatalyst (CoO/ PT-C 3 N 4 ) has been prepared by using a one-pot calcination method, in which cobalt oxide (CoO) as a cocatalyst are introduced on the rectangular hollow substrate of g-C 3 N 4 (PT-C 3 N 4 ), The CoO/PT-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst delivers an excellent photodegradation performance for diesel oil under a simulated sunlight. It exhibits a high degradation efficiency of 95.92% after light irradiation for 2 h, which is much higher than that of pristine PT-C 3 N 4 . Free radical capture experiments manifest that the free radical of ·O 2− plays a major role for the photodegradation and main active radicals abide by the sequence: ·O 2− > ·OH > h + . Moreover, the CoO/PT-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst delivers an excellent cyclic stability, which only degrades 8.71% photodegradation efficiency after 10 cycles. The improvement of CoO/PT-C 3 N 4 composite photocatalyst is ascribed to the formation of a heterojunction between CoO and PT-C 3 N 4 , which promotes the separation of photo-induced carriers. This work paves a new way for the exploration of photocatalyst for the organic pollutant degradation.

C 3 N 4 is widely applied in the synthesis of single-atom catalysts. However, understanding on the active site and the reaction mechanism is not fully in consensus. Especially, bare studies have considered the coordination environment of the single-atomic dopant and the effect of nitrogen vacancy on C 3 N 4 . In this study, we found that the presence of nitrogen vacancies promotes the activation of water and reduces the activation energy barrier for hydrogen generation. The results show that a synergistic effect between single-atom Pt and nitrogen vacancies enables the catalyst to achieve a superior hydrogen production rate of 3,890 μmol/g/h, which is 16.8 times higher than that of pristine C 3 N 4 . Moreover, the catalyst is also applicable for photocatalytic hydrogen production from seawater without significantly decreased hydrogen production rate. This study paves the way for the rational design and optimization of next-generation photocatalysts for sustainable energy applications, particularly in solar-driven hydrogen production.

The goal of this work was to assess the performance of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) as co-catalysts on the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 @Pt@C 3 N 4 hollow spheres, which was tested by photodegrading rhodamine B and methyl blue under visible light irradiation. TiO 2 @Pt@C 3 N 4 composites were fabricated by using modified polystyrene balls as templates, hydrothermal reactions , and calcination . Under simulated sunlight irradiation, photocatalytic activity was in the following of TiO 2 @Pt@C 3 N 4 > TiO 2 @C 3 N 4 > C 3 N 4 > P25. The photo-conversion rate of the TiO 2 @Pt@C 3 N 4 increased significantly relative to TiO 2 @C 3 N 4 and the others. The combination of TiO 2 and C 3 N 4 , as well as the sandwiched of Pt NPs reduce electron-hole recombination as a result of having an electron trap site, which can store and shuttle photo-generated electrons, and enhance photo-generation of active radicals. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, as well as photo-luminescence (PL), and electrochemical measurements were taken to verify this conclusion. Considering the multi-functional combination of precious metals and semiconductor materials , this work may provide new ideas for the design of high-performance catalysts.

Hydrogen spillover provides a powerful route to overcome hydrogen binding ability and sluggish water dissociation kinetics in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we present a catalyst with Pt nanoparticles supported on a nonmetallic support (C 3 N 4 ), which achieves efficient hydrogen evolution kinetics and exceptional stability through the hydrogen spillover effect. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals that strong Pt N coordination induces interfacial electron transfer from Pt to C 3 N 4 , establishing a vertical interfacial electric field that drives hydrogen spillover. As a result, Pt/C 3 N 4 –500 delivers industrial-level current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm −2 at ultralow overpotentials of 89.8 ± 1.5 and 137.7 ± 2.1 mV, respectively, in a three-electrode system. It also maintains stable operation at 500 mA cm −2 for 300 h with a minimal potential variation of just 42.2 mV. In situ electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, in situ Raman spectroscopy, and DFT calculations reveal that the C 3 N 4 support optimizes the kinetics of H 2 desorption (0.8 × 10 −4 s), induces a hydrogen spillover effect, and facilitates the transfer of H* intermediates to the C 3 N 4 (0.37 eV) surface for desorption via low Δ G H⁎ (−0.04 eV) at the interfacial Pt sites. Anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWE) using Pt/C 3 N 4 –500 as the cathode requires only 1.73 ± 0.02 V to achieve a current density of 1 A cm −2 and operates stably for over 150 h at 1 A cm −2 .

The co-production of hydrogen and value-added biochemicals from lignocellulose utilizing solar energy has been regarded as one of the technologies most potentially able to alleviate the current energy crisis. Here, we demonstrate a cost-effective photoreforming strategy for lignocellulose valorization using a carbon nitride-supported platinum single-atom photocatalyst. An advanced H 2 evolution rate of 6.34 mmol mol Pt –1 h –1 is achieved over the optimal catalyst, which is around 4.6 and 30.5 times higher compared with the nanosized Pt counterpart and pristine carbon nitride, respectively. Meanwhile, the monosaccharides are oxidized to value-added lactic acid with >99% conversion and extraordinary selectivity up to 97%. The theoretical calculations show that with Pt incorporation, the photogenerated holes are predominantly localized on the metal sites while the photogenerated electrons are concentrated on C 3 N 4 , thus enhancing the effective separation of charge carriers. This work provides a promising avenue for the simultaneous production of green H 2 and bio-based chemicals by biomass photorefinery.
