Pt/MOx/SiO2, Pt/MOx/TiO2, and Pt/MOx/Al2O3 Catalysts for CO Oxidation

Hongmei Qin,Xiaoshuang Qian,Tao Meng,Yi Lin,Zhen Ma

Conventional supported Pt catalysts have often been prepared by loading Pt onto commercial supports, such as SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, and carbon. These catalysts usually have simple metal-support (i.e., Pt-SiO2) interfaces. To tune the catalytic performance of supported Pt catalysts, it is desirable to modify the metal-support interfaces by incorporating an oxide additive into the catalyst formula. Here we prepared three series of metal oxide-modified Pt catalysts (i.e., Pt/MOx/SiO2, Pt/MOx/TiO2, and Pt/MOx/Al2O3, where M = Al, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Ba, La) for CO oxidation. Among them, Pt/CoOx/SiO2, Pt/CoOx/TiO2, and Pt/CoOx/Al2O3showed the highest catalytic activities. Relevant samples were characterized by N2adsorption-desorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), CO temperature-programmed desorption (CO-TPD), O2temperature-programmed desorption (O2-TPD), and CO2temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD).Keywords:Pt catalysts;cobalt oxide;CO oxidation

Cross-Interference of VOCs in SnO2-Based NO Sensors

Renjun Si,Yan Li,Jie Tian,Changshu Tan,Shaofeng Chen,Ming Lei,Feng Xie,Xin Guo,Shunping Zhang

In this work, we studied the influence of cross-interference effects between VOCs and NO on the performance of SnO2and Pt-SnO2-based gas sensors. Sensing films were fabricated by screen printing. The results show that the response of the SnO2sensors to NO under air is higher than that of Pt-SnO2, but the response to VOCs is lower than that of Pt-SnO2. The Pt-SnO2sensor was significantly more responsive to VOCs in the NO background than in air. In the traditional single-component gas test, the pure SnO2sensor showed good selectivity to VOCs and NO at 300 °C and 150 °C, respectively. Loading noble metal Pt improved the sensitivity to VOCs at high temperature, but also significantly increased the interference to NO sensitivity at low temperature. The explanation for this phenomenon is that the noble metal Pt can catalyze the reaction between NO and VOCs to generate more O−, which further promotes the adsorption of VOCs. Therefore, selectivity cannot be simply determined by single-component gas testing alone. Mutual interference between mixed gases needs to be taken into account.

Synergistic effect of Mo2N and Pt for promoted selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde over Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15

Dong Wang,Yujun Zhu,Chungui Tian,Lei Wang,Wei Zhou,Yongli Dong,Qing Han,Yunfei Liu,Fulong Yuan,Honggang Fu

The introduction of a suitable co-catalyst is a promising way to improve the catalytic efficiency of Pt catalysts. Herein, SBA-15 modified with well-dispersed Mo2N nanoparticles (NPs) is synthesized by anchoring phosphomolybdic acid (HPM) on aminated SBA-15 (SBA-15-NH2) primarily, followed by nitridation treatment under NH3. After loading of Pt, the Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalyst with close-contact Pt and Mo2N NPs can be formed. The intensive interaction of Pt and Mo2N benefited from the close contact is verified by XRD and XPS tests. As a result, the ternary Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalysts have shown superior performance to Pt/SBA-15 catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol. The TOF over the 1 wt% Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 catalyst is close to that over the 3 wt% Pt/SBA-15 catalyst, but its selectivity to cinnamyl alcohol (COL) is 2.5 times that of 3 wt% Pt/SBA-15. The promoted activity of Pt–Mo2N/SBA-15 is mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of Pt and Mo2N NPs, which can cause the full development of the catalytic ability of Pt, thus reducing the Pt usage, through increasing the dispersion of Pt NPs and the fraction of Pt0 species in the catalyst.

Unravelling the support-dependent active structures and SO2-tolerance of supported Pt catalysts to remediate toxic CO contaminant: An experimental and theoretical perspective

Xinyu Liu,Chengxiong Wang,Feng Feng,Yinglong Wu,Shiying Chang,Guangxin Liu,Dong Tian,Weinan Yang,Xianming Cheng,Dongxia Yang,Kongzhai Li,Yunkun Zhao

Catalyst deactivation caused by SO 2 poisoning generally hinders commercial viability of CO oxidation catalysts in the field of industrial flue gas purification. XPS results, CO-DRIFTS spectra and DFT calculations suggested that Pt was highly-dispersed and remained the oxidative states on SnO 2 support, resulting in that the rate-determining step of CO oxidation is to clean up the adsorbed CO and PtS 2 species is readily formed in a SO 2 -contained hydrothermal environment. It predominantly maintained metallic Pt 0 in the Pt/WO 3 catalyst, thereby led to cleaning up the activated oxygen atoms as the rate-determining step. It is very difficult to remove the sulfur species in SO 2 -poisoned catalysts within 600 °C and the mechanisms of CO oxidation are not affected by SO 2 poisoning for Pt/SnO 2 and Pt/WO 3 catalysts. These findings provide some significant insights to understand the mechanisms of CO oxidation and SO 2 -tolerance.

SnOx-Decorated Pt Catalysts for the Reductive N-Methylation of Quinoline with Methanol

Kun Li,Chengjie Duan,Weitao Mao,Dongliang Wang,Yumeng Liang,Wenbo Ye,Guangke He,Xiang Liu

A direct and efficient synthesis of N-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines (MTHQs) is achieved through the one-pot reductive N-methylation of quinolines. The SnOx-decorated Pt/Al2O3 (Pt-SnOx/Al2O3) catalyst proves to be highly effective in the transformation from quinolines to MTHQs, using methanol as the exclusive source for hydrogen (H) and methyl (CH3), without the addition of additional bases or additives. Mechanistic and kinetic studies reveal a tandem reaction pathway: (1) the dehydrogenation of methanol, (2) reduction of quinolines to 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinolines (THQs), and (3) N-methylation of THQs to MTHQs, with the dehydrogenation of methanol identified as the rate-determining step. Characterization and catalytic performance results demonstrate that SnOx modifies the morphology and electronic properties of Pt-based metal active sites, which dramatically facilitates the cleavage of O–H and less reactive C–H bonds in methanol, and maintains a delicate balance between methanol dehydrogenation and reductive N-methylation of quinolines, thus obtaining a high reactivity for the total transformation.

Electrooxidation of Methanol on PANI-CeO2@Pt Catalysts

Qun Xiang,Ruiwen Yan,Guiqi Gao,Shuang Wang

Graphical The PANI-CeO 2 @Pt composites with core-shell structure have been successfully synthesized. Platinum nanoparticles were anchored on the surface of the PANI-CeO 2 materials. The lower potential and higher current density for MOR among the tested PANI@Pt, Pt/C, and CeO 2 @Pt catalysts showed that PANI-CeO 2 @Pt catalyst displayed excellent catalytic performance. This work provided a novel approach to prepare anode catalytic materials and had wide application. Polyaniline (PANI) and Pt were synthesized in sequence by in situ electrochemical deposition on CeO 2 surface to prepare PANI/CeO 2 /Pt ternary composites (PANI-CeO 2 @Pt composites). The electrocatalytic activity of PANI-CeO 2 @Pt composite was measured to 226 mA⋅mg −1 , which was 1.7-, 2.3-, 20-flod as that of CeO 2 @Pt, Pt/C, and PANI@Pt catalyst, respectively. The PANI-CeO 2 @Pt catalyst displayed noticeably the highest activity toward methanol oxidation after the 4000 s among the tested CeO 2 @Pt, Pt/C, and PANI@Pt catalyst. In a CO-stripping experiment, PANI-CeO 2 @Pt composites exhibited better CO tolerance. These results meant that highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles and the oxygen storage capacity of PANI-CeO 2 @Pt contributed to admirable catalytic activities for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR).

Metal Phosphate-Supported Pt Catalysts for CO Oxidation

Xiaoshuang Qian,Hongmei Qin,Tao Meng,Yi Lin,Zhen Ma

Oxides (such as SiO2, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CeO2) have often been used to prepare supported Pt catalysts for CO oxidation and other reactions, whereas metal phosphate-supported Pt catalysts for CO oxidation were rarely reported. Metal phosphates are a family of metal salts with high thermal stability and acid-base properties. Hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, denoted as Ca-P-O here) also has rich hydroxyls. Here we report a series of metal phosphate-supported Pt (Pt/M-P-O, M = Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, Co, Zn, La) catalysts for CO oxidation. Pt/Ca-P-O shows the highest activity. Relevant characterization was conducted using N2adsorption-desorption, inductively coupled plasma (ICP) atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO2temperature-programmed desorption (CO2-TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and H2temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR). This work furnishes a new catalyst system for CO oxidation and other possible reactions. Keywords:metal phosphate;hydroxyapatite;Pt catalyst;CO oxidation

Unveiling the origin of enhanced catalytic performance of CePO4/Pt for selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes

Zhenshuai Wu,Shuai Wang,Daowei Gao,Riming Hu,Xuchuan Jiang,Guozhu Chen

Supported catalysts are widely used in selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes, in which the choice of support has an important effect on the catalytic reaction rate and the selectivity of products. Herein, CePO 4 as support to stabilize Pt nanoparticles for selective hydrogenation of nitroarenes is presented. The catalyst achieves a remarkable selectivity of aromatic amine production (>95 %) with a high turnover frequency (1476 h −1 ). Mechanistic studies reveals that the electronic structure of Pt is modulated by CePO 4 . In comparison to conventional CeO 2 /Pt catalyst, the Pt sites on CePO 4 are negatively charged. Such configuration allows facile dissociation of H 2 on Pt sites. Meanwhile, the potential-determining step (the formation of Ph-HNOH from Ph-HNO) on CePO 4 /Pt (0.73 eV) is a significantly lower than CeO 2 /Pt (1.15 eV), thereby favoring the pathway for aromatic amine production on Pt sites. Moreover, the CePO 4 support has strong adsorption capacity of substrate, which plays a role as new active sites when adsorbed substrates are activated by active hydrogen species via hydrogen spillover. This work provides a new perspective into the development of selective nitroarenes conversion through the artful design of supported catalysts.

High conductivity of novel Ti0.9Ir0.1O2 support for Pt as a promising catalyst for low-temperature fuel cell applications

Tai Thien Huynh,Hau Quoc Pham,At Van Nguyen,Vi Thuy Thi Phan,Anh Tram Ngoc Mai,Trinh Duy Nguyen,Dai-Viet N. Vo,Van Thi Thanh Ho

The novel nanostructured Ti 0.9 Ir 0.1 O 2 acting as a potential catalyst support for Pt in fuel cell applications was easily synthesized by means of a facile and simple low-temperature hydrothermal process without using any surfactants and further heat treatment. Interestingly, even in low iridium doping concentration, the Ti 0.9 Ir 0.1 O 2 support possessed the high electronic conductivity of 0.016 S/cm, which was ∼10 5 times as high as pure TiO 2 (4.15 × 10 −7  S/cm), suggesting the efficient doping of iridium into TiO 2 lattice. Furthermore, the modified chemical reduction route utilized to prepare the 20 wt % Pt/Ti 0.9 Ir 0.1 O 2 electrocatalyst exhibited the good anchoring and uniform distribution of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) (∼3 nm) over Ti 0.9 Ir 0.1 O 2 surface and thus eventually resulted in the high electrochemical surface area (∼85.08 m 2 /gPt) compared to that of the commercial 20 wt % Pt/C (E-TEK) catalyst (∼69.21 m 2 /gPt). The cyclic voltammetry results in the methanol media revealed that the 20 wt % Pt/Ti 0.9 Ir 0.1 O 2 displayed the superior electrocatalytic activity compared to the 20 wt % Pt/C (E-TEK) catalyst towards the methanol electro-oxidation. For instance, the 20 wt % Pt/Ti 0.9 Ir 0.1 O 2 catalyst possessed the higher oxidation current density (∼28.8 mA/cm 2 ), the lower onset potential (∼0.12 V) and the higher I f /I b ratio in comparison with the commercial 20 wt % Pt/C (E-TEK) catalysts. It is worth noting that the chronoamperometry results also indicated that the 20 wt % Pt/Ti 0.9 Ir 0.1 O 2 exhibited higher durability than the commercial 20 wt % Pt/C (E-TEK) catalyst. Beside introducing novel Ti 0.9 Ir 0.1 O 2 material, these results also offer a pathway of exploring the low dopants content of Ti x Ir 1-x O 2 material to serve as a good catalyst support for many fuel cell applications.

Highly Efficient Oxidation of Propane at Low Temperature over a Pt-Based Catalyst by Optimization Support

Zhenpeng Huang,Jiajia Ding,Xinwei Yang,Hao Liu,Peiyao Song,Yanglong Guo,Yun Guo,Li Wang,Wangcheng Zhan

Pt-based catalysts have attracted widespread attention in environmental protection applications, especially in the catalytic destruction of light alkane pollutants. However, developing a satisfying platinum catalyst with high activity, excellent water-resistance, and practical suitability for hydrocarbon combustion at low temperature is challenging. In this study, the Pt catalyst supported on the selected Nb2O5 oxide exhibited an efficient catalytic activity in propane oxidation and exceeded that of most catalysts reported in the literature. More importantly, the Pt/Nb2O5 catalyst maintained excellent activity and durability even after high-temperature aging at 700 °C and under harsh working conditions, such as a certain degree of moisture, high space velocity, and composite pollutants. The excellent performance of the Pt/Nb2O5 catalyst was attributed to the abundant metallic Pt species stabilized on the surface of Nb2O5, which prompted the C–H bond dissociation ability as the rate-determining step. Furthermore, propane was initially activated via oxidehydrogenation and followed the acrylate species path as a more efficient propane oxidation path on the Pt/Nb2O5 surface. Overall, Pt/Nb2O5 can be considered a promising catalyst for the catalytic oxidation of alkanes from industrial sources and could provide inspiration for designing superb catalysts for the oxidation of light alkanes.

Insights into the effects of Pt and PtOx site for electrocatalytic water gas shift reaction via altering supports and calcinated temperatures

Shenghong Wang,Changan Zhou,Guoqiang Shu,Yongda Cao,Li Fan,Lei Song,Kui Ma,Hairong Yue

Electrocatalytic water-gas shift reaction (EWGSR) at room temperature and atmospheric pressure is an emerging process for high-pure hydrogen production without an additional H 2 separation procedure. Therefore, developing efficient electrocatalysts of EWGSR is one of the critical factors for its wide applications. Herein, the effects of support and calcinated temperature on the EWGSR performance are highlighted by systematically investigating the Pt/γ-Fe 2 O 3 , Pt/CeO 2 , Pt/TiO 2 , and Pt/α-Fe 2 O 3 catalysts. The results reveal that the γ-Fe 2 O 3 supported Pt catalyst (calcined at 400 °C) exhibits the lowest anodic onset potential and the highest activity compared to these prepared catalysts, and the mass activity is 3.5 times as high as 20% Pt/C. Furthermore, the onset potential for the EWGSR shows a strong correlation with the active O in the amorphous PtOx structures, where the active O atoms can promote the activation of the OH − and reduce the onset potential of the reaction. The significantly enhanced catalytic performance and durability are more responsible for the exposed Pt 0 and the weak adsorption of CO on the Pt/γ-Fe 2 O 3 catalyst. This study provides a new and promising route for designing excellent Pt catalysts for EWGSR in the hope that it can be helpful to the scholars in this orientation.

Construction of Co3O4/Pt Catalyst with Interfacial N-Stabilized Co3+-OH-Pt Pair for Highly Efficient CO2 Methanation

Jingru Li,Siyuan Hu,Longmei Shang,Guowu Zhan

Graphical This study investigates N -doped Co 3 O 4 /Pt catalysts synthesized using a Pt-decorated ZIF-67 sacrificial template, followed by a water-soaking treatment to enhance surface hydroxyl (-OH) group content. The interfacial N -stabilized Co 3+ -OH-Pt active sites in N -Co 3 O 4 /Pt improved synergy between cobalt and platinum, enhancing agglomeration resistance and enhancing catalytic performance. CO 2 hydrogenation is a promising method for converting CO 2 into valuable products. Cobalt-based catalysts are favored for their low cost and high activity, but they face challenges from sintering-induced deactivation. This study investigates N -doped Co 3 O 4 /Pt catalysts synthesized using a Pt-decorated ZIF-67 sacrificial template, followed by a water-soaking treatment to enhance surface hydroxyl (─OH) group content. The as-designed N -Co 3 O 4 /Pt catalyst achieved a CO 2 conversion of 64% and CH 4 selectivity of 98% at 340 °C under ambient pressure. It was demonstrated that the interfacial N -stabilized Co 3+ -OH-Pt active sites in N -Co 3 O 4 /Pt improved synergy between cobalt and platinum, enhancing agglomeration resistance and enhancing catalytic performance. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) demonstrated that CO 2 is converted to methane mainly through a formic acid pathway, with no CO detected. This work underscores the critical role of surface hydroxyl groups in promoting CO 2 adsorption and activation, guiding the CO 2 methanation reaction toward efficient methane production.
