The development and commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells requires active and durable electro-catalysts towards the ethanol oxidation reactions (EOR). Rational composition and morphology control of Pt-based alloy nanocrystals can not only enhance their EOR reactivity but also reduce the consumption of precious Pt. Herein, PtCu nanocubes (NCs)/CB enclosed by well-defined (100) facets were prepared by solution synthesis, exhibiting much higher mass activity (4.96 A mgPt−1) than PtCu nanoparticles (NPs)/CB with irregular shapes (3.26 A mgPt−1) and commercial Pt/C (1.67 A mgPt−1). CO stripping and in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) experiments indicate that the alloying of Cu enhanced the adsorption of ethanol, accelerated the subsequent oxidation of intermediate species, and increased the resistance to CO poisoning of PtCu NCs/CB, as compared with commercial Pt/C. Therefore, alloying Pt with earth-abundant Cu under rational composition and surface control can optimize its surface and electronic structures and represents a promising strategy to promote the performance of electro-catalysts while reduce the use of precious metals. Keywords:Pt–Cu alloy;nanocubes;electrocatalysis;ethanol oxidation reaction;in situ FTIR

A series of PtCuCeMgAl quintuple hydrotalcite-like compounds with different Ce contents were synthesized by one-pot method. After calcining and reduction, CeO 2 -modified Mg(Al)O-supported Pt–Cu alloy catalysts were obtained. To understand the effect of Cu and Ce, the structure and physico-chemistry properties of the catalysts were characterized and analyzed, and the catalytic behaviors were investigated in a direct dehydrogenation of propane to propene. The results show that the Pt 4+ , Cu 2+ , and Ce 3+ ions can be incorporated into the brucite-like layers and the Ce content significantly affects the interaction strength between Pt and Cu and the dehydrogenation performance of propane. Under the reaction conditions, the highest propane conversion (45%) with 89% selectivity to propene and a 40% propene yield were achieved with a 0.3 wt% Ce-modified PtCu/Mg(Al)O catalyst. The improved catalytic performance is related to the easy formation of Pt–Cu alloy phase, excellent resistance to sintering, and coke deposits of active components modified by CeO 2 .

Highly dispersed Pt–Cu alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in silicalite-1 were prepared by one-pot method. Taking propane dehydrogenation as a probe reaction, it was found that anti-coke ability was improved by encapsulation. Through H 2 -TPR, CO adsorption DRIFT spectra and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy experiment, enhanced anti-coke ability was ascribed to the electronic environment change of encapsulated metal. And it was further confirmed by in situ coking experiment. Owning to limited acidity, metal encapsulated by silicalite-1 molecular sieve exhibited better anti-coke ability and higher propylene selectivity than that by stronger acidic ZSM-5 molecular sieve. Moreover it was found that the combination of Cu and Pt made better catalytic performance and accelerated dehydrogenation more effectively compared with monometallic catalysts. Therefore, Pt–Cu alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in silicalite-1 molecular sieve core–shell material was a potential coke-resistant catalyst for alkane dehydrogenation reaction. Graphical Abstract

Volatile organic compounds such as benzene are hazardous air pollutants that require effective elimination. Noble metal-based catalysts exhibit high benzene combustion activity, but their prohibitive cost necessitates strategies to enhance utilization efficiency. This study investigates a Pt–Cu alloy catalyst for improved benzene combustion by preferentially exposing Pt active sites through Cu alloying. Aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy and X-ray spectroscopy characterize the nanoscale distribution and enrichment of Pt on the alloy surface. Kinetic measurements demonstrate substantially enhanced activity compared with Pt catalysts, attributed to increased Pt metallic site exposure rather than alteration of the reaction mechanism. In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy reveals a higher abundance of terrace-like Pt sites in the alloy, beneficial for benzene adsorption. Partial pressure dependence analyses indicate competitive adsorption of benzene and O2, following Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetics. These findings provide conceptual insights into tuning surface composition in bimetallic catalysts to optimize noble metal efficiency, with broad applicability for sustainable catalytic process advancement.

The critical problem facing catalysts for the LT-ESR is deactivation owing to sintering of the active metal and carbon deposition. To solve this problem, a dragon fruit-like Pt-Cu@mSiO 2 catalyst for LT-ESR reaction has been successfully fabricated by a facile encapsulation strategy. Structural and morphological analysis shows that the Pt-Cu@mSiO 2 nanocomposite (approximately 400 nm) has a uniform dragon fruit-like structure, with well crystallized Pt-Cu alloy nanoparticles (about 50 nm) embedded in the mSiO 2 . Benefiting from the unique components and architectural features, the dragon fruit-like Pt-Cu@mSiO 2 nanocomposite with optimal Pt/Cu ratio present superior performance than that of Pt@mSiO 2 , Cu@mSiO 2 and supported Pt-Cu/mSiO 2 catalysts in terms of activity, H 2 selectivity, and stability in the LT-ESR reaction. Moreover, the synergistic effect of platinum and copper can substantially decrease the CO concentration. It is crucial that the mesoporous SiO 2 shell not only make the embedded Pt-Cu alloy nanoparticles easily accessible but also effectively prevent leaching and aggregation of active sites as well as spatially suppress the carbon deposition on the active surface, thus maintain a good catalytic activity during the 150 h stability test at 400 °C.

Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was used to fabricate carbon supported Pt-Cu alloy (Pt-Cu/C) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at ambient temperature. A flowerlike structure of Pt-Cu nanoparticles were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to confirm the surface chemical composition and metallic state. And, electrochemical measurements such as CV, rotating disk electrode, rotating ring-disk and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were applied to obtain the kinetic constants and the reaction mechanisms of the ORR. Compared with Pt/C, Cu/C, Pt-Cu/C exhibits the highest efficient catalytic activity for ORR, as evidenced by the highest current densities of the polarization curves, lowest onset oxidation potential and charge transfer impedance. The average electron transfer number and hydrogen peroxide calculated from RRDE are about 3.87 and 6.71%, respectively. These results show that the synthesized Pt-Cu/C has excellent electrocatalytic activity and the ORR is a four-electron dominant reduction pathway.

Well-dispersed Pt Cu alloy nanoparticles (NPs) with a diameter of only ≈2 nm encapsulated in carbon nanofibers (CNFs) are synthesized using electrospinning technology followed by a graphitization process in a chemical vapor deposition furnace. Distinctly, even with a small amount of Pt, the Pt Cu/CNFs-1:2 catalyst possesses outstanding hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, including small overpotential, long-term stability, and a high exchange current density as well as large double layer capacitance ( C dl ). The excellent HER performance of the Pt Cu/CNFs-1:2 catalyst is attributed to the synergistic interaction between Pt and Cu, the uniform distribution of the alloy NPs and the use of CNFs with 3D architectures. This development may provide a simple, efficient, and green synthesis method to design bi- or multimetal alloys for use as the cathode electrocatalysts for the HER or other electrocatalytic devices.

Porous Pt–Cu alloy networks are synthesized through a one-pot hydrothermal process, with ethylene glycol as the reducing agent and the block copolymer Pluronic F127 as structure-directing agent. The structure, porosity and surface chemical state of as-prepared Pt–Cu alloy with different composition are characterized. The formation mechanism of the porous structure is investigated by time sequential experiments. The obtained Pt 53 Cu 47 alloy possesses a unique 3D hierarchical porous network structure assembled by interconnected nanodendrites as building blocks. Because of the high surface area, concave surface topology and open porous structure, the Pt 53 Cu 47 alloy catalyst exhibits enhanced catalytic activity towards methanol and ethanol electro-oxidation in comparison with commercial Pt black and the Pt 73 Cu 27 alloy synthesized following the same process as Pt 53 Cu 47 .
