The hydrogenation products of aromatic molecules with reducible groups (such as C=C, NO2, C=O, etc.) are relatively critical intermediate compounds in fine chemicals, but how to accurately reduce only specific groups is still challenging. In this work, a bimetallic Pt-Ni/Chitin catalyst was prepared for the first time by using renewable biomass resource chitin as support. As the carrier, the chitin was constructed into porous nanofibrous microspheres through the sol-gel strategy, which was favorable for the adhesion of nano-metals and the exchange of reactive substances due to its large surface area, porous structure, and rich functional groups. Then the Pt-Ni/Chitin catalyst was applied to selective hydrogenation with the model substrate of 4-nitrostyrene. As the highly dispersed Pt-Ni NPs with abundant exposed active sites and the synergistic effect of bimetals, the Pt-Ni/Chitin catalyst could efficiently and selectively hydrogenate only NO2or C=C with yields of ~99% and TOF of 660 h−1, as well as good stability. This utilization of biomass resources to build catalyst materials would be important for the green and sustainable chemistry. Keywords:biomass chitin;Pt-Ni nanoparticles;supported catalyst;hydrogenation

In this study, a bimetallic Pt-Ni alloy catalyst, designated PN 0.5 /VCN 1 , was synthesized with the objective of enhancing the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution performance. Photoelectrochemical characterizations confirm that PN 0.5 /VCN 1 significantly improves light absorption, charge transfer efficiency, and proton adsorption/activation capability, leading to enhanced photocatalytic performance. The results demonstrate that under optimized conditions (300 W Xe lamp, lactic acid as the hole scavenger) PN 0.5 /VCN 1 achieves a hydrogen evolution rate of 8.77 mmol·g -1 ·h -1 (4079 times higher than pure CN) with remarkable stability. And stability tests over four cycles (20 h total) indicate no significant activity loss. This enhancement is attributed to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of the alloy, interfacial electron redistribution, and synergistic metal-defect interactions. The modification strategy proposed in this study offers a rational and cost-effective approach for efficient photogenerated charge separation and accelerated proton reduction kinetics, providing a competitive advantage in the market. This work provides a foundation for designing high-performance photocatalytic systems.

A novel carbon fiber paper loaded with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used as the substrate, on which Pt–Ni nanoparticles were electro-deposited as to prepare an integrated electrode by two electrochemical methods (cyclic voltammetry and square wave pulse). The electrochemical tests indicated two integrated electrodes had excellent performance towards methanol oxidation . Especially, Pt-Ni-CV(A)-rGO/CFP electrode showed the highest electrocatalytic activity , and mass activity reached 5.33 A·mg −1 Pt , which was about 5.6 times that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (JM). Further, after annealing under a reducing atmosphere, two electrodes exhibited completely different changes in the aspects of morphology and electrocatalytic performance. It can be attributed to the changes of element distribution and morphology of nanoparticles after annealing. The as-prepared Pt–Ni-rGO/CFPs composite electrode is promising for integrated electrode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. This work opens an avenue for the preparation of high-performance integrated electrode.

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is fundamental in numerous electrochemical energy conversion technologies, necessitating efficient catalysts to enhance reaction kinetics and reduce precious metal usage. This study focuses strategic clustering of Pt-Ni on Calcium Oxide/activated carbon (C/Ca) aerogels. Electrochemical analyses confirmed that incorporating Ni into Pt matrices significantly enhanced ORR activities with Pt 25 Ni 75 -C/Ca composition emerged as optimum. A positive shift in half-wave potential (905 mV vs. RHE) and impressive mass activity (72.50 Ag −1 at 85 V) highlight the potential of this composite as a highly effective and stable ORR catalyst. Pt-C/Ca demonstrated performance fluctuation, while Pt 25 Ni 75 -C/Ca showed remarkable stability after 40,000 cycles. Furthermore, C/Ca aerogels exhibited a significantly increased BET surface area, and the presence of Pt-Ni/pyridinic-N species on its surface C/Ca aerogel provided supplementary active sites that facilitated the adsorption and reduction of O 2 during ORR.

Waste cooking oils (WCOs) are a cheap and rich source of carbon and hydrogen, and they exhibit great potential for the preparation of hydrogen gas and carbon nanomaterials. Here, we prepared three Pt–Ni/SBA-15 catalysts with Pt contents ranging from 0 to 2% to examine their activity in the catalytic cracking of WCO towards the production of hydrogen and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). A mixture of soybean oil, oleic acid and animal fat was used as a model compound of WCO, and the catalysts were characterised by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption isotherms, temperature programmed reduction, thermogravimetric analysis and Raman spectroscopy. The effect of Pt loading and cracking temperature on the hydrogen production and the quality of CNTs was also evaluated. Among the prepared catalysts, 2%Pt–30%Ni/SBA-15 showed excellent catalytic activity at 750 °C, affording a maximum hydrogen content of 66.2 vol%, while CNTs with diameters of 20–100 nm and high crystallinity, oxidation stability, graphitisation and purity were also prepared.

In order to improve the catalytic performance of the nitrobenzene hydrogenation rearrangement to prepare p -aminophenol, a bimetallic Pt-Ni/C (PNC) catalyst was synthesized. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of Ni and Pt to enhance product selectivity and catalytic performance stability, the electrons in Ni are moved to Pt by the electron effect, which affects the catalyst's ability to activate H 2 as well as the amount of hydrogen activated. Furthermore, due to the strong Pt(5d)-Ni(3d) coupling effect, Ni can effectively maintain Pt stability in the acidic system and reduce Pt dissolution. The stability of the PNC can be found to be greatly enhanced compared to the Pt/C (PC) catalyst, and p -aminophenol selectivity is greatly enhanced, showing excellent catalytic performance.

Efficient and low-cost nanocatalysts are extremely desirable for the catalytic reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). A smaller nanocatalyst particle size and stronger support effect can significantly enhance the catalytic performance. Naturally occurring halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are promising alternative supports for fine metal nanoparticles, but the smooth surface and single type of functional groups on HNTs are usually unfavorable for the anchoring of metal ions. Herein, we modified HNTs using a mild and controllable molten salt etching method to create a rough surface (rHNTs), followed by loading Pt–Ni alloys to prepare Pt–Ni/rHNTs for the catalytic reduction of 4-NP. The results demonstrate that ultrafine Pt–Ni alloy nanoparticles with a diameter of 1.60 nm are uniformly dispersed on the rough surface of rHNTs. The particle size and catalytic performance can be tuned by adjusting the loading amount of Pt–Ni. The optimized Pt–Ni/rHNT (1 wt %) nanocatalyst reveals the smallest Pt–Ni particle size and the highest catalytic rate of 0.1953 min−1, which exceeds many Pt–Ni-based catalysts in previous reports. This work offers an ingenious idea for the mild surface modification of HNTs and a brilliant perspective for the rational design of inexpensive 4-NP reduction nanocatalysts.

Catalytic CO2 hydrogenation is a promising way to produce chemicals and has recently received much attention; however, designing catalysts with special product selectivity still remains a challenge. Here, we interestingly found that the Pt–Ni/γ-Al2O3 catalyst tended to have high CH4 selectivity, while both Pt/γ-Al2O3 and Ni/γ-Al2O3 had high CO selectivity. The characterization results showed that the Pt–Ni bimetallic catalyst was composed of Pt nanoparticles with surrounding Ni atoms. The results of in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the direct disassociation of CO2 to CO on the Pt/γ-Al2O3 and the decomposition of formate species to CO on Ni/γ-Al2O3. However, the presence of Pt–Ni bimetallic sites changed the hydrogenation pathway, in which the electronic interaction between Pt particles and surrounding Ni atoms promoted the further hydrogenation of formate species to CH4. This study provides insights into the understanding of the mechanisms of CO2 hydrogenation on bimetallic catalysts.

To reduce cost and energy consumption of fuel cell vehicles, constructing membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with low Pt loading and outstanding performance at low relative humidity (RH) conditions is reported. A catalyst layer based on porous Pt–Ni nanobelt arrays was prepared, in which the strained catalyst enhanced the catalytic activity and the oriented nanobelt array structure provided convenient mass transport channels. The porous Pt–Ni nanobelt arrays were prepared by the magnetron sputtering of Pt and Ni on a sacrificed template and then washed with acid. Consequently, the catalyst layer based on the porous Pt–Ni nanobelt arrays exhibited superior fuel cell performance in H2/air conditions and RH 40%. The performance of the MEA with porous Pt–Ni nanobelt arrays reach 366.6 and 597.6 mW cm–2 with Pt loadings of 36.5 μg cm–2/36.5 μg cm–2 and 108.9 μg cm–2/108.9 μg cm–2 at the cathode/anode, respectively. A conventional CCM with the Pt loading of 100 μg cm–2/200 μg cm–2 at the cathode/anode served as the benchmark, and the cell performance was 230.5 mW cm–2. Apart from that, the Pt nanobelt arrays without a porous structure (100.8 g cmPt–2/100.8 μg cmPt–2) serving as another benchmark achieved a performance of 504.7 mW cm–2. The superior performance of the porous Pt–Ni nanobelt arrays is attributed to the convenient mass transport pathway and the high activity of the porous Pt–Ni nanobelt.

The structure- and composition-controlled synthesis of Pt-based nanocatalysts is highly important for improving their catalytic performance while reducing the overall use of precious Pt. Here, an effective strategy is developed to combine surface porosity, hollow cavities and metal–nonmetal incorporation engineering on Pt, resulting in ternary Pt–Ni–P mesoporous nanocages (Pt–Ni–P MNCs). Owing to the mesoporous surface, hollow structure and synergistic electronic effects derived from Pt, Ni, and P elements, the as-prepared Pt–Ni–P MNCs exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity and long-term stability for both the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), enabling them to be promising ORR–MOR bifunctional electrocatalysts for direct methanol fuel cells.

A novel Pt/Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide (Pt/Ni-Fe LDH) electrocatalyst was fabricated by a two-step facile process for oxidation of methanol in alkaline medium. It is found that Pt/Ni-Fe LDH electrocatalyst exhibits higher electrocatalytic activity, better anti-poisoning ability and stability for methanol oxidation comparing to pure Pt black and commercial Pt/C catalyst. Such an enhancement is probably attributed to the synergistic effect of Ni-Fe LDH and the uniform loading of Pt nanoparticles on the LDH layers. When ionic liquid (IL) was introduced to the composites, the prepared Pt/IL/Ni-Fe LDH exhibits even better electrocatalytic behaviors (205.6 mA mg -1 Pt, I f /I b=5.67) than the Pt/Ni-Fe LDH. Moreover, the morphology and structure of composites were characterized using scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and FT-IR spectra. It is found that the Ni-Fe LDH have a flake-like morphology, the mean diameter of Pt nanoparticles in Pt/Ni-Fe LDH and Pt/IL/Ni-Fe LDH electrocatalyst is 4.36 nm and 3.09 nm, smaller than that in pure Pt black and commercial Pt/C electrocatalyst (8.70 nm and 6.48 nm).

Electrodeposition of refractory metals is a challenging issue in the electroplating field owing to their low reduction potential. Electrodeposition of molybdenum in MoCl 5 -BMIMPF 6 by a cyclic scanning regime was introduced in this paper. Ni-Mo and Pt/Ni-Mo deposits were prepared by underpotential deposition to induce the bulk deposition of molybdenum. The coatings were observed and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical behavior of metallic molybdenum in ionic liquids was studied by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The results show that the initial nucleation/growth process of molybdenum in MoCl 5 -BMIMPF 6 follows three-dimensional progressive nucleation with diffusion-controlled growth, and the nucleation rate of molybdenum is slow in the ionic liquid system. The effects of supporting electrolytes and sputtering Pt/Ni electrodes were particularly studied. A yellow-brown uniform coating with more refined crystalline grains was obtained on the Ni surface by the addition of NaF due to its positive role in the mass transfer process and good complexing actions that promote nucleation. A gray-white coating with metallic luster was successfully fabricated on the surface of sputtered Pt/Ni because the substrate with a high work function is benign to molybdenum growth at a lower temperature and more positive potentials.
