Facile synthesis of PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires for oxygen reduction reaction

Shaohui Zhang,Hao Cui,Haikun Zhou,Xiyu Tan,Pengfei Tan,Jun Pan

Platinum-based alloy nanowires are often employed in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their exceptional performances. However, most platinum-based alloy nanowires suffer from poor stability in strong acidic electrolytes, as well as their complex preparation methods. Herein, PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires were successfully prepared by one-step hydrothermal with different concentrations of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and replacement reaction. The results show that the microstructure of nanowires gradually change with the increase of PVP concentration. Meanwhile, the outer layer of the PtMn nanowires contains a Pt-skin of about 1–2 nm. Moreover, the mass activity of the prepared PtMn@Pt core-shell nanowires with 50 mg PVP is 0.409 A mg −1 (@0.9 V), which is 3.86 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. The as-prepared nanowires display excellent stability mainly due to the existence of Pt-skin. This paper provides a relatively simple method to synthesize Platinum-based core-shell nanowires with outstanding ORR performance.

L12 Atomic Ordered Substrate Enhanced Pt-Skin Cu3Pt Catalyst for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Na Cheng,Ling Zhang,Shuying Mi,Hao Jiang,Yanjie Hu,Haibo Jiang,Chunzhong Li

Constructing Pt skin on intermetallics has been confirmed as an efficient strategy to boost oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics. However, there still lacks a systematic study on revealing the influence of low-Pt-content intermetallic substrates (L12-PtM3). In this paper, Pt skin-encapsulated low-Pt-mole-fraction L12 Cu3Pt has been constructed (denoted as Pt-o-Cu3Pt/C) and compared with its disordered analogue (denoted as Pt-d-Cu3Pt/C). The L12 substrate shows a contracted lattice structure and provides Pt-o-Cu3Pt/C with an excellent specific activity of 1.73 mA cm–2, which is 1.4- and 8.4-fold higher than that of Pt-d-Cu3Pt/C and commercial Pt/C, respectively. Density functional theory calculations reveal that this superior performance is attributed to the more favorable oxygen adsorption energy of surface Pt atoms. Furthermore, the lower formation energy of L12 Cu3Pt combined with the enhanced antioxygenation of Pt provide Pt-o-Cu3Pt/C with a superior durability, showing only a 12.5% loss in mass activity after 5000 potential cycles. Therefore, it is suggested that L12 atomic ordered structure with a low Pt fraction is a promising substrate for building high-performance Pt-skin catalysts for ORR.

Mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt3Ni core-shell framework nanowire electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen reduction

Jin Hui,Xu Zhewei,Hu Zhi-Yi,Yin Zhiwen,Wang Zhao,Deng Zhao,Wei Ping,Feng Shihao,Dong Shunhong,Liu Jinfeng,Luo Sicheng,Qiu Zhaodong,Zhou Liang,Mai Liqiang,Su Bao-Lian,Zhao Dongyuan,Liu Yong

The design of Pt-based nanoarchitectures with controllable compositions and morphologies is necessary to enhance their electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we report a rational design and synthesis of anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni core-shell framework nanowires for high-efficient electrocatalysis. The catalyst has a uniform core-shell structure with an ultrathin atomic-jagged Pt nanowire core and a mesoporous Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni framework shell, possessing high electrocatalytic activity, stability and Pt utilisation efficiency. For the oxygen reduction reaction, the anisotropic mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni core-shell framework nanowires demonstrated exceptional mass and specific activities of 6.69 A/mg pt and 8.42 mA/cm 2 (at 0.9 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode), and the catalyst exhibited high stability with negligible activity decay after 50,000 cycles. The mesoporous Pt@Pt-skin Pt 3 Ni core-shell framework nanowire configuration combines the advantages of three-dimensional open mesopore molecular accessibility and compressive Pt-skin surface strains, which results in more catalytically active sites and weakened chemisorption of oxygenated species, thus boosting its catalytic activity and stability towards electrocatalysis.

Pt-Ni core–shell structure with Pt-skin and electronic effect on catalytic performance

Chong Yao,Dandan Ma,Jie Luo,Yixin Chen,Min Tian,Haoxuan Xie,Chunshan Lu,Feng Feng,Xiaoliang Xu,Qingtao Wang,Qunfeng Zhang,Xiaonian Li

In order to improve the catalytic performance of the nitrobenzene hydrogenation rearrangement to prepare p -aminophenol, a bimetallic Pt-Ni/C (PNC) catalyst was synthesized. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of Ni and Pt to enhance product selectivity and catalytic performance stability, the electrons in Ni are moved to Pt by the electron effect, which affects the catalyst's ability to activate H 2 as well as the amount of hydrogen activated. Furthermore, due to the strong Pt(5d)-Ni(3d) coupling effect, Ni can effectively maintain Pt stability in the acidic system and reduce Pt dissolution. The stability of the PNC can be found to be greatly enhanced compared to the Pt/C (PC) catalyst, and p -aminophenol selectivity is greatly enhanced, showing excellent catalytic performance.

Nitrogen-Doped Intermetallic PtCo Catalyst with Multilayered Pt-Skin Surfaces for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Ji Zhou,Chen Liu,Yifei Liao,Guanghui Xia,Qin Huang,Yisha Huang,Yigang Yan,Chaoling Wu,Yao Wang

Catalysts with a platinum-rich shell and intermetallic core are considered to be one of the most promising catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. However, too thin of a platinum-rich shell makes the core–shell structure easy to lose. Therefore, the development of the core–shell structure with an appropriate thickness of platinum-rich shell and intermetallic core remains a huge challenge in the field of fuel cells. In this paper, PtCoN-1000/C catalyst with about 1 nm thick platinum-rich shell shows significantly enhanced ORR activity and stability in acidic electrolyte, which is superior to L10-PtCo/C and commercial Pt/C catalysts. The specific power at 0.8 V and mass activity at 0.9 V are 5.60 W mgPt–1 and 0.74 A mgPt–1, respectively. It suggests that the tensile strain and moderately thickened platinum-rich shell led by nitrogen doping can greatly improve the performance of the catalyst.

Highly stable Pt-Co nanodendrite in nanoframe with Pt skin structured catalyst for oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Xinxin Zhu,Lei Huang,Min Wei,Panagiotis Tsiakaras,Pei Kang Shen

A novel self-etched engineering of Pt-Co nanodendrite in nanoframe (Pt-Co ND-NF) synthesized through a simple one-pot approach, for the first-time. The modulation mechanism of Pt-Co ND-NF formation is established by investigating critical factors of adjusting: i) the water amount, ii) the ratio of mixed solvent oleylamine to oleic acid and iii) the amount of surfactant hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide. Besides, the formation process of Pt-Co ND-NF is carefully explored with reaction time progress, further confirming the state of Pt-Co nanoframe blockade on Pt-Co nanodendrite (ND). Pt-Co ND-NF exhibits improved catalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), in which mass activity (0.939 A mg Pt −1 ) is much higher (∼500 %) than that of commercial Pt/C (0.187 A mg Pt −1 ), respectively. Furthermore, Pt-Co ND-NF shows enhanced stability during the accelerated durability tests (ADTs) for 50,000 cycles. Pt-Co nanodendrites in nanoframe with Pt skin, create a novel protection with an external nanoframe (NF) and obtain a unique catalytic material Pt-Co ND-NF, which could provide promising ways for highly strengthening catalytic activity.

Pt skin coated hollow Ag-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles with high catalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction

Tao Fu,Jianxing Huang,Shaobo Lai,Size Zhang,Jun Fang,Jinbao Zhao

The catalytic activity and stability of electrocatalyst is critical for the commercialization of fuel cells, and recent reports reveal the great potential of the hollow structures with Pt skin coat for developing high-powered electrocatalysts due to their highly efficient utilization of the Pt atoms. Here, we provide a novel strategy to prepare the Pt skin coated hollow Ag-Pt structure (Ag-Pt@Pt) of ∼8 nm size at room temperature . As loaded on the graphene, the Ag-Pt@Pt exhibits a remarkable mass activity of 0.864 A/mg Pt (at 0.9 V, vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is 5.30 times of the commercial Pt/C catalyst, and the Ag-Pt@Pt also shows a better stability during the ORR catalytic process. The mechanism of this significant enhancement can be attributed to the higher Pt utilization and the unique Pt on Ag-Pt surface structure, which is confirmed by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations and other characterization methods. In conclusion, this original work offers a low-cost and environment-friendly method to prepare a high active electrocatalyst with cheaper price, and this work also discloses the correlation between surface structures and ORR catalytic activity for the hollow structures with Pt skin coat, which can be instructive for designing novel advanced electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Atomic Layer Deposition of a Pt-Skin Catalyst for Base-Free Aerobic Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid

Jinshan Shen,Hao Chen,Kequan Chen,Yong Qin,Xiuyang Lu,Pingkai Ouyang,Jie Fu

A Pt–Ni/AC bimetallic catalyst was prepared by atomic layer deposition of Pt nanoparticles on the surface of Ni/AC for base-free oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA). A comparison of the Pt–Ni bimetallic catalyst with Ni and the Pt monometallic catalyst was demonstrated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and temperature-programmed desorption of CO (CO-TPD). Compared with the Ni/AC and Pt/AC (1.6 wt % Pt) catalysts, the bimetallic Pt–Ni/AC catalyst had a higher activity for the oxidation of 5-HMF to 2,5-FDCA, with only a 0.4 wt % Pt loading. A 97.5% yield of 2,5-FDCA with 100% 5-HMF conversion was obtained after 15 h at 100 °C. A mass-based activity value of 35.8 h–1 was obtained over the Pt–Ni/AC-15ALD catalyst. The combination of Pt with Ni increased the ability of Pt for C═O adsorption and oxidation, thus increasing the activity of the Pt catalyst. Finally, the catalyst showed good reusability for at least four times without any reduction in the catalytic activity.

en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section Platinum (Pt)-based catalysts are crucial for the commercialization of hydrogen/metal air batteries, but they suffer from Pt scarcity, high cost, and nanoparticle dissolution/agglomeration, mainly leading to performance degradation. We address this by synthesizing a PtFe alloy catalyst (PtFe–PA–NC) via a phytic acid (PA) assisted pyrolysis strategy, featuring Pt-skin-coated PtFe alloy nanoparticles on hierarchically porous N-doped carbon (NC). PA treatment simultaneously enhances the support's surface area and pore structure for better mass transport, and incorporates P into the carbon framework via P–C bonds. It can induce charge delocalization, regulating the electronic structure of PtFe alloys and strengthening Pt–Fe coupling. The Pt-skin suppresses Fe dissolution, whereas the PtFe core optimizes oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) intermediate adsorption (e.g., *OH). Theoretical calculations confirm that the Fe atom adjusts the d-band center of the Pt atom, intensifying oxygen binding and shifting the rate-determining step. Electrochemically, PtFe–PA–NC achieves a half-wave potential of 0.85 V and retains 95.8% of specific energy density after more than 140 h in zinc-air batteries. In alkaline fuel cells, it delivers a peak power density of 508 mW cm −2 at an ultralow Pt loading (0.017 mg cm −2 ), approximately twice that of 5 wt% Pt/C (0.025 mg cm −2 ). This work showcases synergistic electronic and interfacial regulation through heteroatom doping and alloying, promoting high-performance hydrogen/metal air batteries. 摘要 en This link goes to a English section zh This link goes to a Chinese section 铂基催化剂是氢/金属空气电池商业化的关键,但铂资源稀缺、成本高昂且纳米颗粒易溶解/团聚 , 是导致其性能衰减的主要原因。

Hollow porous nanoparticles with Pt skin on a Ag–Pt alloy structure as a highly active electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction

Tao Fu,Jun Fang,Chunsheng Wang,Jinbao Zhao

Aiming to reduce the dosage of the noble metal Pt and improve the catalytic activity of the catalyst in fuel cells, hollow porous Ag–Pt alloy nanoparticles with Pt coating are prepared via a facile controlled galvanic replacement reaction. Ag is used as the substrate to build a hollow porous structure and alloyed with Pt to minimize the tensile effect of the Ag on the deposited Pt skin which would significantly lower the catalytic performance of the Ag–Pt bimetallic catalyst. This hollow porous Ag/Pt bimetallic catalyst exhibits a long catalytic durability and a mass activity of 0.438 A mgPt−1 at 0.9 V (vs. RHE) towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is ca. 3 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The significant enhancement over the state-of-the-art Pt catalysts can be attributed to (1) the high surface area of the nanoparticles, (2) the more suitable d-band center of the Pt skin deposited on the Ag–Pt alloy substrate, and (3) the high thermal stability of the Ag–Pt alloy. Therefore, this work provides a new strategy for designing high-performance catalysts with low cost. In addition, the synthetic chemistry involved can possibly be extended for fabricating versatile catalysts with a similar structure.
