Optimizing alcohol solvents for the synthesis of PtCo alloy catalysts for high-efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Feng Tan,Hao Cui,Dongdong He,Yue Hao,Wenhui Ma,Yunkung Zhao,Yibo Liu,Chengxiong Wang,Feng Liu,Jian Liu,Kezhu Jiang

The polyol solvent thermal reduction method holds great promise for synthesizing Pt-based alloy nanoparticles with commercial viability. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding how various alcohols impact the size, shape, and electrocatalytic properties of particles. To bridge this knowledge gap, we systematically investigated the mechanisms behind the effects of four common alcohols on product characteristics using the polyol solvent thermal method. Our efforts led to the successful synthesis of small, uniformly distributed nanoparticles. Notably, the PtCo/C-BA catalyst, synthesized using benzyl alcohol, exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It achieved a remarkable current density of 0.437 A mg −1 and demonstrated minimal mass activity decay after 20,000 cycles. The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy characterization reveals that the PtCo/C-BA catalyst exhibits a higher proportion of metallic-like valence states for Pt and Co, which favors the ORR process. This work not only deepens our understanding of the synthesis strategy but also establishes a foundation for designing high-performance ORR catalysts.

Effective electrochemical ozone production coupled with hydrogen evolution reaction by synergistic effect of PtCo alloy and borides

Fengying Gao,Xinyu Li,Lihao Liu,Mengmeng Lu,Huaijie Shi,Xuan Yu,Lei Ding,Shibin Wang,Sheng Dai,Xing Zhong,Jianguo Wang

Platinum-based electrocatalysts exhibited good performance in electrocatalytic ozone production (EOP) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nonetheless, the widespread application of platinum is restricted due to its limited availability and high cost. In this study, we propose an alloying strategy for the synthesis of PtCo/Co 2 B, which achieved a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 9.09 % for EOP and overpotential of 51.5 mV for HER at 10 mA⋅cm −2 in acidic conditions. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the synergy between the PtCo and Co 2 B in PtCo/Co 2 B modulates the adsorption properties of the O 3 * intermediate, thereby facilitating the reaction towards the EOP. Furthermore, the chemisorption energy of hydrogen is approximately zero, indicating optimal electrocatalytic activity for HER. Such unique structure enhances the performance of electrocatalyst and significantly extends its durability in practical applications. In addition to its electrochemical performance, the PtCo/Co 2 B electrocatalyst effectively degrades organic pollutants and demonstrates strong sterilization capabilities.

Carbon supported PtCo nanoparticles in-situ derived from ZIF-67 boosting methanol assisted water electrolysis

Yanxi Qin,Guoqiang Jin,Yan Qiao,Xili Tong

Efficient Pt-based catalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in acid media still remains a great challenge. Herein, porous cubic N-doped carbon supported PtCo alloy with high dispersion and small size was successfully synthesized derived from the zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs). Benefiting from the strong support from N-doped carbon, PtCo exhibited an optimized electronic structure and improved exposed active sites of Pt species, thus leading to an excellent bi-activity toward HER and MOR in HClO 4 media. In detail, the optimum catalyst with a low-loading Pt of 3.63 wt% delivered the current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low overpotential of 14 mV, and exhibited a superior Tafel slope of 20.22 mV dec −1 as well as a strong stability for 12 h continuous operation without obvious change toward the HER. In the meantime, this catalyst also showed a high mass activity of 1852 mA mg −1 along with a better resistance to CO poisoning toward the MOR. Moreover, the coupled electrolyzer of MOR||HER based on this bifunctional catalyst required a voltage of 1.484 V at 10 mA cm −2 , lower than the overall water splitting (0.151 V), obviously outperformed that on benchmark commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (JM) (1.662 V). This work might provide a great insight for the functionalized design of bifunctional electrocatalysts and beyond.

Void-confinement effects of porous hollow nanostructures boost selectivity and durability of oxygen reduction reaction

Yingxiu Zhao,Ping Zhao,Wen Zhang,Xinyuan Zhou,Qiong Zhang,Yu Miao,Guang-Rui Xu,Lei Wang

Pt-based electrocatalysts are the most efficient materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to the unfilled d orbitals while suffering from poor selectivity and durability during the 4e - pathway. Herein, we reported a high-performance electrocatalyst of porous hollow carbon nanosphere encapsulated inside with PtCo alloy nanorods (PtCo@PHCNS). Specifically, the PtCo alloy nanorods with a diameter of 6 nm show a nanorod structure, and the hollow carbon nanospheres with a diameter of 400 nm and a wall thickness of 65 nm show a porous structure. Strikingly, the electrochemistry shows that PtCo@PHCNS displays the ORR onset potential ( E onset ) and the half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) are 0.975 V vs. RHE and 0.885 V vs. RHE under alkaline conditions, respectively. Specifically, PtCo@PHCNS shows enhanced ORR selectivity and durability that originate from the void-confinement effects of porous hollow carbon nanosphere. The strategy describes novel protection with porous carbon materials and obtains a unique electrocatalysis PtCo@PHCNS, providing a promising way for designing and synthesizing high-performance electrocatalysts.

PtCo/N-doped carbon sheets derived from a simple pyrolysis of graphene oxide/ZIF-67/H2PtCl6 composites as an efficient catalyst for methanol electro-oxidation

Yuhong Lv,Xingwei Li

Many alloy catalysts have been developed for methanol electro-oxidation, but most synthetic methods are complicated. Herein, PtCo alloy catalysts supported on N-doped carbon sheets (PtCo/NCS) are successfully prepared by a simple pyrolysis of graphene oxide/ZIF-67/H 2 PtCl 6 composites at different temperatures (700, 800, 900 °C) under a gas flow of H 2 /Ar, in which ZIF-67 is served as Co and N sources. SEM, TEM , XRD , XPS and electrochemical characterization are employed to study as-prepared catalysts. In acidic methanol solution, the area-specific activity (1.25 mA cm −2  Pt) of PtCo alloy catalyst obtained at 800 °C (PtCo/NCS-800) is 2.6 times of commercial Pt/C (0.48 mA cm −2  Pt), and the area-specific activity of PtCo/NCS-800 is 3.5 times of Pt/C after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, an improved CO-tolerance of Pt is confirmed. The electronic effect and synergistic effect of metallic elements are responsible for outstanding performance of as-prepared catalysts. This work provides a simple approach to obtain high performance alloy catalysts.

Enhancing oxygen reduction reaction in acidic medium: A novel electrocatalyst of Pt–Co embedded in nitrogen-rich carbon nanosheets derived from polypyrrole-g-C3N4

Ravichandran Balamurali,Narayanan Naresh,Ravichandran Sabarinathan,Liu Huiyuan,Zhang Weiqi,Bhuvanendran Narayanamoorthy,Su Huaneng

In this study, PtCo alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully synthesized and deposited on nitrogen-rich carbon nanosheets derived from Polypyrrole-g-C 3 N 4 using a chemical reduction method. This electrocatalyst not only offers enhanced catalytic efficiency but also significantly improves the stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in in acidic medium. In terms of electrocatalytic performance, the PtCo/CN@PPY-g-C 3 N 4 catalyst demonstrated a mass activity of 0.378 mA µg Pt −1 at 0.85 V, 0.131 mA µg Pt −1 at 0.9 V and a specific activity of 2.900 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.85 V, 1.004 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.9 V which are respectively 2.3, 2.8 and 10, 12 times higher than those of a commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst (0.166 mA µg Pt −1 at 0.85 V, 0.046 mA µg Pt −1 at 0.9 V and 0.285 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.85 V, 0.079 mA cm Pt −2 at 0.9 V). This indicates superior catalytic activity. Furthermore, after 5000 cycles, the PtCo/CN@PPY-g-C 3 N 4 retained approximately 77% at 0.85 V and 83% at 0.9 V of its initial mass activity, with only a 14 mV decrease in the half-wave potential, whereas commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst retained only 40% at0.85 V and 30% at 0.9 V of its initial mass activity. These enhancements can be attributed to the synergistic effects and strong interactions between the Pt–Co alloy nanoparticles and the carbon nitride support. The findings of this study underscore the potential of PtCo/CN@PPY-g-C 3 N 4 as a viable and efficient alternative to traditional catalysts in electrochemical applications.

Toward the Long-Term Stability of Cobalt Benzoate Confined Highly Dispersed PtCo Alloy Supported on a Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanosheet/Fe3C Nanoparticle Hybrid as a Multifunctional Catalyst for Zinc-Air Batteries

Ping Bai,Peng Wang,Jiarong Mu,Zhinan Xie,Chunfang Du,Yiguo Su

This work reports a new type of platinum-based heterostructural electrode catalyst that highly dispersed PtCo alloy nanoparticles (NPs) confined in cobalt benzoate (Co-BA) nanowires are supported on a nitrogen-doped ultra-thin carbon nanosheet/Fe3C hybrid (PtCo@Co-BA-Fe3C/NC) to show high electrochemical activity and long-term stability. One-dimensional Co-BA nanowires could alleviate the shedding and agglomeration of PtCo alloy NPs during the reaction so as to achieve satisfactory long-term durability. Moreover, the synergistic effect at the interface optimizes the surface electronic structure and prominently accelerates the electrochemical kinetics. The oxygen reduction reaction half-wave potential is 0.923 V, and the oxygen evolution reaction under the condition of 10 mA•cm–2 is 1.48 V. Higher power density (263.12 mW•cm–2), narrowed voltage gap (0.49 V), and specific capacity (808.5 mAh•g–1) for PtCo@Co-BA-Fe3C/NC in Zn-air batteries are achieved with long-term cycling measurements over 776 h, which is obviously better than the Pt/C + RuO2 catalyst. The interfacial electronic interaction of PtCo@Co-BA-Fe3C/NC is investigated, which can accelerate electron transfer from Fe to Pt. Density functional theory calculations also indicate that the interfacial potential regulates the binding energies of the intermediates to achieve the best performance.

Highly efficient PtCo nanoparticles on Co–N–C nanorods with hierarchical pore structure for oxygen reduction reaction

Rongcheng Mo,Xiaoran Zhang,Zhenyu Chen,Shangli Huang,Yanjie Li,Lizhe Liang,Zhi Qun Tian,Pei Kang Shen

Developing platinum-based nanoparticles on carbon catalysts with high activity and stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is of great significance for the practical application of fuel cells. Herein, a synchronous strategy of preparing nano-sized PtCo supported on atomic Co and N co-doped carbon nanorods (PtCo/Co–N–C NR) was developed to replace the conventional method of impregnating Pt sources into ready-made carbon materials , in which metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with Co and Zn ions of rhombic dodecahedron were first prepared using 2-methylimidazole as building block and then their morphology was transformed into porous nanorods via the reduction of Co ions to Co–B–O complex in the MOFs by NaBH 4 ; subsequently, Pt was deposited on the Co–Zn MOF nanorods through the displacement reaction of PtCl 6 2 - and metallic Co and coordination between MOF and PtCl 6 2 - ; after pyrolysis and acid-leaching process, highly dispersed PtCo/Co–N–C NR was obtained. Attributed to its unique characteristics of hierarchical pore structure , uniform PtCo alloy nanoparticles with the average size of 7.0 nm and strong supporting interaction effect, the catalyst exhibits high ORR activity and stability with the mass activity of 577.0 mA mg −1 Pt and specific activity of 1.4 mA cm −2 at 0.9 V vs RHE in 0.1 M HClO 4 , which is about 3.6 times and 3.5 times high than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst respectively. This strategy would provide a flexible route to develop highly active and stable ORR electrocatalysts with various morphologies for optimizing the exposure of active sites.

Zhi Zeng,Dongbo Wang,Jinzhong Wang,Shujie Jiao,Yuewu Huang,Sixiang Zhao,Bingke Zhang,Mengyu Ma,Shiyong Gao,Xingguo Feng,Liancheng Zhao

In this work, MoS2microspheres/PtCo-alloy nanoparticles (MoS2/PtCo-alloy NPs) were composited via a novel and facile process which MoS2is functionalized by poly (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PVP) and self-assembled with PtCo-alloy NPs. This new composite shows excellent electrocatalytic activity and great potential for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) as a counter electrode (CE) material. Benefiting from heterostructure and synergistic effects, the MoS2/PtCo-alloy NPs exhibit high electrocatalytic activity, low charge-transfer resistance and stability in the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) test. Meanwhile, a high power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.46% is achieved in DSSCs with MoS2/PtCo-alloy NP CEs, which are comparable to traditional Pt CEs (8.45%). Synthesis of novel flower-like PtCo–Bi2MoO6 photocatalysts with enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance

Yan Lu,Xiaoxuan Li,Changcun Han,Lei Ge,Siman Fang,Ping Qiu

A novel PtCo/Bi2MoO6 composite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by loading PtCo alloy nanoparticles via a simple polyol reduction method. The as-prepared PtCo/Bi2MoO6 composite exhibits an enhanced photocatalytic performance for the degradation of RhB under visible-light irradiation. Among various PtCo/Bi2MoO6 composites with different contents of PtCo, the 1 wt% PtCo–Bi2MoO6 sample shows the highest photocatalytic activity and its degradation constant is 5 times higher than that of pure Bi2MoO6. Through photocatalytic experiments, the fabricated PtCo/Bi2MoO6 composite demonstrated that it can efficiently promote the separation efficiency. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirm the composition of the PtCo alloy in the composite catalysts. TOC measurement also suggests that RhB is easily mineralized. SPS measurements illustrate that the high activity of PtCo–Bi2MoO6 could be attributed to its better ability to grab photoexcited electrons compared with Pt–Bi2MoO6. Based on experimental results, we propose a possible photocatalytic mechanism of PtCo–Bi2MoO6, which may provide a theoretical basis for future research.

Anshun Zhao,Zhaowei Zhang,Penghui Zhang,Shuang Xiao,Lu Wang,Yue Dong,Hao Yuan,Peiwu Li,Yimin Sun,Xueliang Jiang,Fei Xiao

Recent advances in on-body wearable medical apparatus and implantable devices drive the development of light-weight and bendable electrochemical sensors, which require the design of high-performance flexible electrode system. In this work, we reported a new type of freestanding and flexible electrode based on graphene paper (GP) supported 3D monolithic nanoporous gold (NPG) scaffold (NPG/GP), which was further modified by a layer of highly dense, well dispersed and ultrafine binary PtCo alloy nanoparticles via a facile and effective ultrasonic electrodeposition method. Our results demonstrated that benefited from the synergistic effect of the electrocatalytically active PtCo alloy nanoparticles, the large-active-area and highly conductive 3D NPG scaffold, and the mechanically strong and stable GP electrode substrate, the resultant PtCo alloy nanoparticles modified NPG/GP (PtCo/NPG/GP) exhibited high mechanical strength and good electrochemical sensing performances toward nonenzymatic detection of glucose, including a wide linear range from 35 μM– to 30 mM, a low detection limit of 5 μM (S/N = 3) and a high sensitivity of 7.84 μA cm −2  mM −1 as well as good selectivity , long-term stability and reproducibility. The practical application of the proposed PtCo/NPG/GP has also been demonstrated in in vitro detection of blood glucose in real clinic samples.

ZIF-Mg(OH)2 Dual Template Assisted Self-Confinement of Small PtCo NPs as Promising Oxygen Reduction Reaction in PEM Fuel Cell

Zhenyu Chen,Chao Hao,Bowen Yan,Qiuyan Chen,Huiyan Feng,Xiaoqing Mao,Jianmei Cen,Zhi Qun Tian,Panagiotis Tsiakaras,Pei Kang Shen

Traditional calcination usually causes sintering of Pt, which diminishes Pt exposure in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) electrodes. In the present work, a facile self-confined method for synthesizing highly dispersed PtCo-alloy on Co, N co-doped mesoporous carbon (PCN-MC) is developed via a dual-template strategy. Owing to the co-confined effect of Zn in the bimetallic zeolite-based imidazolate framework (ZIF) and Mg(OH) 2 template, ultra-fine 2.7 nm PtCo-alloy with 2–3 atomic-layer Pt-skin nanoparticles are obtained. By adjusting the Co/Zn feeding-ratio in the bimetallic ZIF at 8/7, the alloying degree and nanoparticle size are optimized to achieve an outstanding oxygen reduction reaction activity with a high mass activity (MA) of 0.956 A mg Pt −1 in 0.1 m HClO 4 , about 7.5-fold of that of commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, notable durability is also achieved with 81% retention of the initial MA after 30k cycles conducted between 0.6–1.0 V (versus reversible hydrogen electrode). These features are also verified by a H 2 –Air fuel cell test with an excellent combination of mass activity, power density, and durability. This strategy provides a feasible route for the large-scale synthesis of highly-dispersed PtCo-alloy catalysts.
