Synthesis of PtCo nanoflowers and its catalytic activity towards nitrobenzene hydrogenation

Hui Miao,Shiwei Hu,Kelong Ma,Lin Sun,Fufang Wu,Hongtao Wang,Huiquan Li

Novel PtCo nanoflowers were synthesized using oleylamine-oleic acid system via one-pot chemical reaction. The difference in morphology with different amount of oleic acid revealed that the formation of the PtCo nanoflowers was attributed to the precipitation effect of oleic acid both in nucleation stage and growth process. The obtained PtCo nanoflowers show excellent performance in catalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene , when compared with PtCo nanoparticles and commercial Pt/C. The high activity is attributed to the porous structure formed by assembling of smaller nanoparticles and electron interaction of Co to Pt.

PtCo with oxidase-like activity and laccase for synergistic catalytic degradation of phthalic acid esters

Xuqiang Zhao,Lei Tang,Xuwen Chen,Jian Wang,Yanzheng Gao

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) as common plasticizers, providing convenience to humans. However, they also present a potential threat to ecosystems and human health as emerging contaminants. In this study, co-immobilization of nanozyme (PtCo) and laccase (Lac) into dendritic mesoporous silica (DMSN) constitutes nanomaterials (Lac@PtCo@DMSN). PtCo with an atomic ratio of 3:1 has the highest oxidizing activity. DMSN exhibited a maximum Lac loading capacity of 365 mg/g and activity of Lac@PtCo@DMSN exhibits excellent pH, temperature, and storage stability and reusability, and demonstrated greater recoverability. Remarkably, Lac@PtCo@DMSN (50 mg) achieved 81.83% degradation of total PAEs within 72 h and maintained 72.44% degradation of dimethyl phthalate (DMP) in the fifth cycle. Electron transfer between Pt, Co and adsorbed oxygen (O 2ads ) in PtCo can generate •OH and •O 2 − , which were the dominant reactants for PAEs degradation. •OH could degrade PAEs to phthalic acid via H-abstration and •OH addition. •OH effectively enhanced Lac activity, and promoted the synergistic catalytic performance of nanozymes and natural enzymes. The degradation of phthalic acid by Lac accelerated the release of PtCo@DMSN reaction sites, resulting in significantly enhanced PAEs degradation. Thus, artificial/natural enzymes can degrade PAEs without exogenous additives to solve the limitation of Lac application, providing a new strategy for degrading contaminants in water.

PtCo@PtSn Heterojunction with High Stability/Activity for pH-Universal H2 Evolution

Jinli Chen,Guangfu Qian,Hao Zhang,Shouquan Feng,Yanshan Mo,Lin Luo,Shibin Yin

Developing highly efficient Pt-based catalysts through interface engineering is significant for hydrogen production by water electrolysis working at pH-universal conditions but still challenging. Herein, a PtCo@PtSn heterojunction with good hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in pH-universal electrolytes is designed and prepared by combining the advantages of a Pt-based bimetallic alloy and heterojunction. Density functional theory simulations illustrate that the surface electronic structure of Pt is optimized by interface engineering to effectively improve the ability of water dissociation and decrease the Pt  H bond strength for obtaining the suitable H* Gibbs free energy (∆ G H* ). It shows low HER overpotentials in 1.0 m KOH (η −10 = 25 mV), 1.0 m phosphate-buffered saline (η −10 = 18 mV), and 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 (η −10 = 21 mV) solutions, respectively, and it can steadily work for 100 000 (100k) cycles by cyclic voltammetry method. Thus, this work provides a novel strategy to design Pt-based hydrogen evolution catalyst with robust catalytic performance.

PtCo nanoalloy embedded nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube for rechargeable Zn-air batteries

Qiusheng Zhou,Minmin Song,Yuan Tian,Min Min,Shiqiang Cui,Xianying He,Chuanyin Xiong

The large-scale application of metal-air batteries strongly depends on the development of cost-effective, highly efficient, and durable bifunctional oxygen catalysts. In this work, a facile approach for preparing the monodisperse PtCo nanoalloy anchored the nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (PtCo/NCNT) for zinc-air batteries is reported. The nitrogen-doped carbon shell prevents PtCo nanoalloy from exfoliation, dissolution, and aggregation and enables the accessibility of electrolytes to the alloy surface and the electron transfer. Besides, the strong interaction between PtCo nanoalloy and nitrogen-doped carbon can efficiently modulate the electronic structure of the formed active sites. When used as a cathode catalyst, the constructed rechargeable zinc-air battery presents higher power density (268 mW cm −2 ), specific capacity (840 mAh g −1 ), and excellent stability. More importantly, the PtCo/NCNT catalyst allows the all-solid-state cell to exhibit remarkable flexibility and high round-trip efficiency at various bending states, demonstrating a potential possibility to replace the conventional Pt/C and RuO 2 catalysts.

Carbon supported PtCo nanoparticles in-situ derived from ZIF-67 boosting methanol assisted water electrolysis

Yanxi Qin,Guoqiang Jin,Yan Qiao,Xili Tong

Efficient Pt-based catalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) in acid media still remains a great challenge. Herein, porous cubic N-doped carbon supported PtCo alloy with high dispersion and small size was successfully synthesized derived from the zeolite imidazole frameworks (ZIFs). Benefiting from the strong support from N-doped carbon, PtCo exhibited an optimized electronic structure and improved exposed active sites of Pt species, thus leading to an excellent bi-activity toward HER and MOR in HClO 4 media. In detail, the optimum catalyst with a low-loading Pt of 3.63 wt% delivered the current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low overpotential of 14 mV, and exhibited a superior Tafel slope of 20.22 mV dec −1 as well as a strong stability for 12 h continuous operation without obvious change toward the HER. In the meantime, this catalyst also showed a high mass activity of 1852 mA mg −1 along with a better resistance to CO poisoning toward the MOR. Moreover, the coupled electrolyzer of MOR||HER based on this bifunctional catalyst required a voltage of 1.484 V at 10 mA cm −2 , lower than the overall water splitting (0.151 V), obviously outperformed that on benchmark commercial 20 wt% Pt/C (JM) (1.662 V). This work might provide a great insight for the functionalized design of bifunctional electrocatalysts and beyond.

Optimizing alcohol solvents for the synthesis of PtCo alloy catalysts for high-efficient oxygen reduction reaction

Feng Tan,Hao Cui,Dongdong He,Yue Hao,Wenhui Ma,Yunkung Zhao,Yibo Liu,Chengxiong Wang,Feng Liu,Jian Liu,Kezhu Jiang

The polyol solvent thermal reduction method holds great promise for synthesizing Pt-based alloy nanoparticles with commercial viability. However, there is a lack of understanding regarding how various alcohols impact the size, shape, and electrocatalytic properties of particles. To bridge this knowledge gap, we systematically investigated the mechanisms behind the effects of four common alcohols on product characteristics using the polyol solvent thermal method. Our efforts led to the successful synthesis of small, uniformly distributed nanoparticles. Notably, the PtCo/C-BA catalyst, synthesized using benzyl alcohol, exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). It achieved a remarkable current density of 0.437 A mg −1 and demonstrated minimal mass activity decay after 20,000 cycles. The X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy characterization reveals that the PtCo/C-BA catalyst exhibits a higher proportion of metallic-like valence states for Pt and Co, which favors the ORR process. This work not only deepens our understanding of the synthesis strategy but also establishes a foundation for designing high-performance ORR catalysts.

Exploring the Predominant Factors Influencing the Oxygen Reduction Performance of PtCo/C Catalysts

Li Jinrong,Yu Xianghui,Sun Qi,Peng Yong,Cao Shuang,Hou Chun-Chao,Xu Qiang

PtCo nanoalloys (NAs) deposited on carbon black are emerging as robust electrocatalysts for addressing the sluggish kinetic issue of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, developing a simple and low-cost method to synthesize PtCo/C with excellent performance is still a great challenge. In this work, a one-pot method was used to successfully obtain the PtCo NAs on commercial carbon supports of acetylene black and Ketjenblack ECP600JD, respectively. Compared with those grown on Ketjenblack ECP600JD, the PtCo NAs grown on acetylene black exhibited higher electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and mass activity (MA), which may be attributed to the different particle sizes of PtCo NAs, distinct hydrophilicity, electroconductivity and charge distribution between the carbon supports and PtCo NAs. Our study provides valuable insights into the optimal design of carbon-supported ORR electrocatalysts with exceptional activity and durability.

Electronically Coupled PtCo/MgAl Hydrotalcite Catalysts Display Tunable Selectivity Toward Glyceric Acid and Lactic Acid for Glycerol Conversion

Liu Mengyuan,Yan Wenjuan,Wu Jingwei,Wang Shu,Xia Qi,Fang Tianqi,Jin Xin

Selective oxidation of glycerol is one of the most promising routes to produce value-added fine chemicals from biomass. However, achieving good selectivity towards glyceric and lactic acids still remains a grand challenge in this field. A series of unique electronically coupled PtCo catalysts, supported on layered double hydroxides via co-precipitation method, was reported in this work, as they display tunable selectivity toward glyceric acid and lactic acid during glycerol conversion. It is found that the unusual electronic transfer from MgAl hydrotalcite support to cobalt species, leading to high electron binding energy of PtCo sites on catalyst surface. The presence of cobalt components contributes to synergistic enhancement of oxidation activity at electron deficient Pt sites and more critically, weakened Pt–O strength during glycerol conversion. Such unique electronic reconfiguration, as characterized by XRD and XPS spectroscopy, induces two alternative reaction pathways under different reaction temperatures. While Pt–O bonding strength is significantly weakened by strong Co–O affinity at relatively higher reaction temperature (100 °C), such effect is almost negligible at 50 °C. As a result, lactic acid selectivity of 67% was obtained at 100 °C, while glyceric acid selectivity of 65% was achieved at 50 °C, over the bifunctional PtCo/MgAl hydrotalcite catalysts. The design principles reported in this work offer alternative approaches for manufacturing cost-effective catalytic materials for glycerol conversion to various value-added carboxylic acids and derivatives. Effective electrochemical ozone production coupled with hydrogen evolution reaction by synergistic effect of PtCo alloy and borides

Fengying Gao,Xinyu Li,Lihao Liu,Mengmeng Lu,Huaijie Shi,Xuan Yu,Lei Ding,Shibin Wang,Sheng Dai,Xing Zhong,Jianguo Wang

Platinum-based electrocatalysts exhibited good performance in electrocatalytic ozone production (EOP) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Nonetheless, the widespread application of platinum is restricted due to its limited availability and high cost. In this study, we propose an alloying strategy for the synthesis of PtCo/Co 2 B, which achieved a Faraday efficiency (FE) of 9.09 % for EOP and overpotential of 51.5 mV for HER at 10 mA⋅cm −2 in acidic conditions. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the synergy between the PtCo and Co 2 B in PtCo/Co 2 B modulates the adsorption properties of the O 3 * intermediate, thereby facilitating the reaction towards the EOP. Furthermore, the chemisorption energy of hydrogen is approximately zero, indicating optimal electrocatalytic activity for HER. Such unique structure enhances the performance of electrocatalyst and significantly extends its durability in practical applications. In addition to its electrochemical performance, the PtCo/Co 2 B electrocatalyst effectively degrades organic pollutants and demonstrates strong sterilization capabilities.

Synthesis of novel flower-like PtCo–Bi2MoO6 photocatalysts with enhanced visible light photocatalytic performance

Yan Lu,Xiaoxuan Li,Changcun Han,Lei Ge,Siman Fang,Ping Qiu

A novel PtCo/Bi2MoO6 composite photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by loading PtCo alloy nanoparticles via a simple polyol reduction method. The as-prepared PtCo/Bi2MoO6 composite exhibits an enhanced photocatalytic performance for the degradation of RhB under visible-light irradiation. Among various PtCo/Bi2MoO6 composites with different contents of PtCo, the 1 wt% PtCo–Bi2MoO6 sample shows the highest photocatalytic activity and its degradation constant is 5 times higher than that of pure Bi2MoO6. Through photocatalytic experiments, the fabricated PtCo/Bi2MoO6 composite demonstrated that it can efficiently promote the separation efficiency. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results confirm the composition of the PtCo alloy in the composite catalysts. TOC measurement also suggests that RhB is easily mineralized. SPS measurements illustrate that the high activity of PtCo–Bi2MoO6 could be attributed to its better ability to grab photoexcited electrons compared with Pt–Bi2MoO6. Based on experimental results, we propose a possible photocatalytic mechanism of PtCo–Bi2MoO6, which may provide a theoretical basis for future research.

Ultrafine PtCo alloy by pyrolysis etching-confined pyrolysis for enhanced hydrogen evolution

Yi Zhang,Jianhong Lan,Yike Xu,Yuanyuan Yan,Weifeng Liu,Xuguang Liu,Shaonan Gu,Jiadong Zhou,Meiling Wang

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) has been widely used as a precursor to developing efficient PtCo alloy catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, traditional in-situ pyrolysis strategies involve complicated interface structure modulating processes between ZIF-67 and Pt precursors, challenging large-scale synthesis. Herein, a “pyrolysis etching-confined pyrolysis” approach is developed to design confined PtCo alloy in porous frameworks of onion carbon derived from ZIF-67. The confined PtCo alloy with Pt content of only 5.39 wt% exhibits a distinct HER activity in both acid (η 10 : 5 mV and Tafel: 9 mV dec −1 ) and basic (η 10 : 33 mV and Tafel: 51 mV dec −1 ) media and a drastic enhancement in stability. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the strong electronic interaction between Pt and Co allows favorable electron redistribution, which affords a favorable hydrogen spillover on PtCo alloy compared with that of pristine Pt(1   1   1). Operational electrochemical impedance spectroscopy demonstrates that the Faraday reaction process is facilitated under acidic conditions, while the transfer of intermediates through the electric double-layer region under alkaline conditions is accelerated. This work not only offers a universal route for high-performance Pt-based alloy catalysts with metal–organic framework (MOF) precursors but also provides experimental evidence for the role of the electric double layer in electrocatalysis reactions.

Efficient furfural hydrogenation to furfuryl alcohol using a PtCo bimetallic catalyst in a fluidized electrocatalysis system

Liangli Li,Mingzhu Yang,Long Cheng,Jingjing Shi,Jinsheng Gou,Junming Xu

Electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) proved to be a highly efficient and eco-friendly approach for transforming biomass derivatives into valuable chemicals and biofuels, although in most cases, the reaction time was lengthy. In this study, a carbon loaded Pt–Co bimetallic catalyst (PtCo/C) was prepared using a simple chemical reduction method. For the ECH of furfural (FF) to furfural alcohol (FAL), as a platform molecular reaction derived from biomass, the dual catalyst system composed of H3O40PW12 (PW12) showed excellent FF conversion rate (96.7% FF conversion rate achieved in 20 minutes) and FAL selectivity (93.1%). The PtCo/C catalyst was found to possess abundant hydrogen adsorption sites (Hads), resulting in improved electrocatalytic hydrogenation and reduced electrocondensation during fluidization. Simultaneously, the occurrence of the hydrogen evolution reaction as an ancillary process was effectively inhibited at comparatively lower potentials. These discoveries offered significant groundwork and a point of reference for the catalyst advancement and the electrocatalytic conversion of biomass.
