The PtCo 3 nanoparticles (NPs of 2–5 nm) were synthesized by the organic phase reduction method and the PtCo 3 -C samples were obtained by physically loading the bimetallic NPs on the carbon black. The catalytic activity and stability of PtCo 3 -C for toluene oxidation under different reaction conditions were studied. The PtCo 3 -C can completely oxidize and decompose 1000 ppm toluene at 238 ℃ for at least 120 h, which has excellent low-temperature catalytic activity and thermal stability. In addition, PtCo 3 -C displays a great water and CO 2 resistance when 3.5 to 20 vol% water vapor (at least 110 h) or 3.5 to 10 vol% CO 2 (at least 60 h) is introduced into the reaction gas at 238 ℃. Moreover, the adsorption energy of toluene (−73.68 kJ mol −1 ) is much higher than that of water (−24.5 kJ mol −1 ) and CO 2 (−37.56 kJ mol −1 ), which were calculated by the density functional theory (DFT). Furthermore, catalytic mechanism of the oxidation of toluene over the PtCo 3 -C catalyst was also proposed. This study presents a good catalyst candidate obtaining high catalytic activity and stability with great water and CO 2 resistance for the removal of toluene.

Pt-based alloy catalysts are critical for enhancing the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to their tunable electronic structures and high activity. However, achieving precise control over alloy crystallization and optimizing the chemical environment of catalyst supports remain significant challenges. Herein, a PtCo 3 /N,P-CoNC electrocatalyst was synthesized through pyrolysis of ZIF-67 precursors followed by Pt deposition. Synergistic N and P dual-doping adjusts the electronic configuration of the carbon matrix, promotes strong metal-support interactions (MSI), and increases accessible active sites. The catalyst delivers exceptional ORR activity with a half-wave potential (E 1/2 ) of 0.934 V and a high electrochemical surface area (ECSA) of 121.55 m 2 g Pt -1 . Accelerated durability test (ADT) reveals that PtCo 3 /N,P-CoNC exhibits only 16 mV decay in E 1/2 and 81.40% ECSA retention after 30k cycles. This enhanced stability stems from the strong nanoparticle anchoring effect induced by N, P co-doping, which effectively suppresses nanoparticle aggregation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that N, P co-doping synergistically enhances catalytic activity and durability by inducing pronounced electron localization through non-planar P configurations to create an electron-deficient Co environment that strengthens MSI, while simultaneously optimizing the ORR pathway on PtCo 3 (111) surfaces to reduce the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step. This work demonstrates a morphology and doping-engineered strategy to design durable, high-performance ORR catalysts, advancing cost-effective fuel cell systems.

Constructing robust and cost-effective Pt-based electrocatalysts with an easily operated strategy remains a crucial obstacle to fuel cell applications. Conventional Pt-based catalysts suffer from high Pt content and an arduous synthetic process. Herein, through the spray dehydration method and annealing treatment, facile producible synthesis of a small-sized (5.2 nm) low-Pt (10.5 wt %) ordered PtCo3/C catalyst (O-PtCo3/C) for oxygen reduction reaction is reported. The fast spray evaporation rate contributes to small size and uniform nucleation of nanoparticles (NPs) on carbon support. O-PtCo3/C-600 exhibits efficient electrocatalytic performance with mass activity (MA) 6.0-fold and specific activity 3.9-fold higher than commercial Pt/C. The ordered chemical structure generates superior stability with merely 3.5% decay in MA after 10,000 potential cycles. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the enhanced catalytic performance originates from rational modification of d-band through strain and ordering effect and accompanying weaker adsorption of intermediate OH. This work highlights the potentials of low-Pt PtM3-type ordered NPs for prospective fuel cell cathodic catalysis. The proposed facile and practical synthetic strategy also shows promising prospects for preparing effective Pt-based electrocatalysts.

The chemical composition and surface groups of the carbon support affect the adsorption capacity of toluene. To investigate the effect of catalyst substrate on the catalytic performance, two different plant biomasses, banana peel and sugarcane peel, were used as carbon precursors to prepare porous carbon catalyst supports (Cba, Csu, respectively) by a chemical activation method. After decorating PtCo3nanoparticles onto both carbon supports (Cba, Csu), the PtCo3-su catalyst demonstrated better catalytic performance for toluene oxidation (T100= 237 °C) at a high space velocity of 12,000 h−1. The Csu support possessed a stronger adsorption capacity of toluene (542 mg g−1), resulting from the synergistic effect of micropore volume and nitrogen-containing functional groups, which led to the PtCo3-su catalyst exhibiting a better catalytic performance. Moreover, the PtCo3-su catalyst also showed excellent stability, good water resistance properties, and high recyclability, which can be used as a promising candidate for practical toluene catalytic combustion.Keywords:PtCo3bimetal;carbon support;toluene oxidation;N-doped;toluene adsorption
