Palygorskite promoted PtSn/carbon catalysts and their intrinsic catalytic activity for ethanol oxidation

Keliang Wang,Hui Wang,Sivakumar Pasupathi,Vladimir Linkov,Shan Ji,Ronfang Wang

PtSn nanoparticles deposited on a stable electrocatalytic support containing conventional carbon and palygorskite are prepared using pre-treated palygorskite and are evaluated by ethanol oxidation. The electrocatalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). TEM and XRD show that the pre-treatment has an effective impact on the morphology of palygorskite, but does not destroy its architecture. XPS results imply that introduction of palygorskite can facilitate the formation of Sn oxides on the surface of catalyst. Sn oxides increase the amount of surface oxygen-containing species and in turn facilitate to oxidize CO-like species adsorbed on Pt active sites, which has been proved by CO stripping voltammetry. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements show that the addition of palygorskite into the carbon as support improves the electrocatalytic activity in ethanol oxidation. The developed new composite support is catalytically more active for ethanol electrooxidation than the conventional carbon support and shows good stability, offering great potential for widespread application of palygorskite as support for electrocatalysis.

Compositional variations in highly active PtSn/Al2O3 catalysts derived from molecular complexes

Chaokai Xu,Shengdong Tan,Yaxin Tang,Shibo Xi,Bingqing Yao,Austin Wade,Binbin Zhao,Shangchen Lu,Yankun Du,Mingjiao Tian,Chi He,Lu Ma,Xingjie Fu,Jiwei Shi,Jiong Lu,Alexander G.R. Howe,Sheng Dai,Guangfu Luo,Qian He

We investigated the industrially important PtSn/Al 2 O 3 catalysts prepared with uniform particle sizes (∼ 1 nm) and varied compositions using molecular complexes of Pt(II) and Sn(II). Our best catalyst, with a Sn:Pt ratio of around 2, exhibited a high initial propylene productivity of about 1.1 mol C 3 H 6 (g catalyst) −1 h −1 . Elaborate electron microscopy studies revealed significant compositional variations in the catalyst, highlighting the practical challenges in achieving or confirming the theoretically predicted optimum Sn:Pt ratio. It is also found that the catalytic activities correlate well with the Pt dispersion, suggesting the structure-insensitive nature of the dehydrogenation reaction applies to these ultrasmall Pt-Sn nanoparticles . The presence of Pt-rich particles in the catalysts did not produce noticeable degradations in the reaction selectivity, indicating a wide composition range for Pt-Sn nanoparticles to be effective at the 1 nm size range. These findings emphasize the importance of detailed analysis of compositional distributions for understanding and optimizing nanoalloys.

Chemical Insight into the Structure and Formation of Coke on PtSn Alloy during Propane Dehydrogenation

Zhe Wang,Yuzhuo Chen,Shanjun Mao,Kejun Wu,Kaichao Zhang,Qichuan Li,Yong Wang

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) catalyzed by PtSn/Al 2 O 3 is a vital industrial process for producing propylene, a significant building block in the chemical industry. However, coke produced in the process deactivates the catalyst and the energy-intensive regeneration procedures can produce considerable CO 2 emission. In this work, coke on the spent catalysts is analyzed by thermogravimetric-mass spectra, Raman spectra, 1 H solid NMR spectra, and infrared spectra. Several C 3 species, including propyl, propylidene and propylidyne are found on the surface of the PtSn alloy. Several reaction pathways are investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is also found that this coke can be hydrogenated to propylene in the PDH process. These results could provide theoretical guidance for optimizing process parameters in industry.

Silanol nest-driven redispersion of sintered PtSn clusters in zeolite for regenerable propane dehydrogenation

Rong Chen,Peng Wang,Lizhi Wu,Li Tan,Yu Tang

PtSn bimetallic catalysts applied in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction suffer from deactivation at high temperatures (500–700 °C) due to metal segregation and Sn-rich cluster formation. This study demonstrates that supporting PtSn catalysts on Silicalite-1 zeolite (S-1) enhances Sn dispersion through interactions with silanol hydroxyl groups, enabling effective regeneration of Pt-rich PtSn clusters even after 15 reaction-regeneration cycles. Comprehensive characterizations reveal that silanol nests play a critical role in redispersing metal species during regeneration, minimizing aggregation, and maintaining catalytic activity. The enhanced metal-support interactions significantly improve catalyst regenerability and stability, addressing key challenges in industrial PDH processes. This work highlights the importance of Sn dispersion and metal-support interactions in designing durable and efficient PtSn catalysts, offering practical insights for sustainable propylene production.

The Acid Roles of PtSn@Al2O3 in the Synthesis and Performance of Propane Dehydrogenation

Hejingying Niu,Jinhua Ma,Lina Gan,Kezhi Li

In this study, a PtSn/Al2O3catalyst with bimetallic uniform distribution in the sphere was synthesized. The PDH performance and characterization analyses, such as with FTIR, XPS, and NH3-TPD, were investigated. The effects of acid on the PDH performance were analyzed. Citric acid (CA) acted as a competing adsorbent in the preparation process of the PtSn/Al2O3catalyst to synthesize the uniform catalyst. Water washing and alkali-treated samples were also studied. SEM line scanning revealed that increased the apparent concentration of Pt metal from 0.23 to 0.30 with citric acid. In contrast to the fresh PtSn/Al2O3catalyst, the addition of citric acid increased the PDH selectivity from 74% to 93%. After alkali or water washing treatments, the catalyst’s selectivity further increased to 96%. Strong acid sites promoted the breaking of C–C bonds during the PDH reaction, resulting in more methane and ethylene byproducts, and decreased catalyst selectivity for fresh PtSn/Al2O3. From the PDH reaction thermodynamic analysis, a relatively sub-atmospheric pressure environment with a lower propane pressure could be the reasonable choice.

WO3-N-doped Carbon Supported PtSn Nanoparticles for Improved Ethanol Oxidation

Hui Wang,Qin Ma

A new nitrogen-doped carbon support for Pt-based electrocatalysts was prepared by carbonizing polypyrrole formed on the surface of WO3 nanoparticles (WO3-CNx). Morphologies of WO3-CNx and PtSn/WO3-CNx were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. PtSn nanoparticles were well-dispersed on the surface of WO3-CNx. Electrocatalytic results showed that PtSn/WO3-CNx is more active than PtSn/C in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), since smaller PtSn nanoparticles were grown on the surface of WO3-CNx and highly electrically conductive WO3-CNx facilitated the electron transport occurred during the EOR. PtSn/WO3-CNx also exhibited better durability and higher stability in ethanol oxidation reaction than PtSn/C. These results indicated that WO3-CNx has potential to be used as a catalytic support with high-performance for Pt-based electrocatalysts used in fuel cells.

PtCo@PtSn Heterojunction with High Stability/Activity for pH-Universal H2 Evolution

Jinli Chen,Guangfu Qian,Hao Zhang,Shouquan Feng,Yanshan Mo,Lin Luo,Shibin Yin

Developing highly efficient Pt-based catalysts through interface engineering is significant for hydrogen production by water electrolysis working at pH-universal conditions but still challenging. Herein, a PtCo@PtSn heterojunction with good hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in pH-universal electrolytes is designed and prepared by combining the advantages of a Pt-based bimetallic alloy and heterojunction. Density functional theory simulations illustrate that the surface electronic structure of Pt is optimized by interface engineering to effectively improve the ability of water dissociation and decrease the Pt  H bond strength for obtaining the suitable H* Gibbs free energy (∆ G H* ). It shows low HER overpotentials in 1.0 m KOH (η −10 = 25 mV), 1.0 m phosphate-buffered saline (η −10 = 18 mV), and 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 (η −10 = 21 mV) solutions, respectively, and it can steadily work for 100 000 (100k) cycles by cyclic voltammetry method. Thus, this work provides a novel strategy to design Pt-based hydrogen evolution catalyst with robust catalytic performance.

Framework Zr Stabilized PtSn/Zr-MCM-41 as a Promising Catalyst for Non-oxidative Ethane Dehydrogenation

Jisheng Xu,Chengxiang Shi,Shuguang Zhang,Qiancheng Zheng,Lun Pan,Xiangwen Zhang,Ji-Jun Zou

Comprehensive Summary Non-oxidative ethane dehydrogenation is a promising route to produce ethene. Herein, PtSn supported catalysts were investigated to achieve better ethane dehydrogenation performance by introduction of different Zr promoters, i.e. , framework Zr and ZrO 2 , to mesoporous MCM-41. In-situ XRD, TEM and CO chemisorption show that aggregation of metal particles and phase segregation of Pt 3 Sn to Pt and PtSn 3 at high temperature occur for PtSn/M, leading to bad ethane dehydrogenation activity. Strong interaction between ZrO 2 and PtSn species, as proved by XPS, results in restrained metal particles, which promotes the initial reactivity. However, Pt phase generated on surface is disadvantageous for the desorption of produced ethene as indicated by CO-IR and C 3 H 6 -TPD, and pyridine-IR and NH 3 -TPD indicate strong acidity generated. Both deactivate the catalyst rapidly by deep dehydrogenation and coking. Moderate interaction between PtSn species and Si-O-Zr with much weaker acidity is formed when framework Zr is incorporated into MCM-41, which benefits the dispersion of metal particles, formation of Pt 3 Sn/Pt species and stabilization of metal species from phase segregation. Outstanding initial ethane conversion and ethene selectivity of ca. 99% were achieved for the optimal PtSn/ZrM, which is more coking-tolerant and stable by generating graphitic carbon mainly on support instead of active metals.

High stability three-dimensional porous PtSn nano-catalyst for ethanol electro-oxidation reaction

Yue Sun,Haiyan Xiang,Huimin Li,Gang Yu,Hong Chen,Song Liu

ABSTRACT In addition to the theoretical research, direct ethanol fuel cells have great potential in practical applications. The performance of direct ethanol fuel cells largely depends on the electrocatalysts. Pt-based electrocatalysts have been promising candidates for advancing direct ethanol fuel cells for its high catalytic activity and great durability. Here, a PtSn catalyst with unique three-dimensional porous nanostructure has been designed and synthesized via a two-step liquid phase reduction reaction. Sn formed a self-supporting framework in PtSn alloy particles (∼3.5 nm). In ethanol electro-oxidation reaction, the PtSn catalyst exhibited high mass activity and excellent recycling time compared with that of Pt/C. After the morphology characterization before and after potential cycling, the PtSn alloy-based nano-catalyst showed good stability. The PtSn catalysts effectively avoid structural instability due to the external carriers, and prolong the leaching time of Sn. In addition, the introduction of a certain amount of Sn can also solve the poisoning phenomenon of active sites on Pt surface. The design strategy of porous alloy nano-catalyst sheds light on its applications in direct ethanol fuel cells.

CeO2-Promoted PtSn/SiO2 as a High-Performance Catalyst for the Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Propane with Carbon Dioxide

Li Wang,Guo-Qing Yang,Xing Ren,Zhong-Wen Liu

The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with CO2(CO2-ODP) has been extensively investigated as a promising green technology for the efficient production of propylene, but the lack of a high-performance catalyst is still one of the main challenges for its industrial application. In this work, an efficient catalyst for CO2-ODP was developed by adding CeO2to PtSn/SiO2as a promoter via the simple impregnation method. Reaction results indicate that the addition of CeO2significantly improved the catalytic activity and propylene selectivity of the PtSn/SiO2catalyst, and the highest space-time yield of 1.75 g(C3H6)·g(catalyst)−1·h−1was achieved over PtSn/SiO2with a Ce loading of 6 wt%. The correlation of the reaction results with the characterization data reveals that the introduction of CeO2into PtSn/SiO2not only improved the Pt dispersion but also regulated the interaction between Pt and Sn species. Thus, the essential reason for the promotional effect of CeO2on CO2-ODP performance was rationally ascribed to the enhanced adsorption of propane and CO2originating from the rich oxygen defects of CeO2. These important understandings are applicable in further screening of promoters for the development of a high-performance Pt-based catalyst for CO2-ODP.Keywords:oxidative dehydrogenation;propane;carbon dioxide;supported PtSn catalyst;ceria

Morphology engineered PtSn/CeO2 catalysts for oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide

Chao Peng,Guoqing Yang,Hanqing Ge,Zhongwen Liu

The oxidative dehydrogenation of propane with carbon dioxide (CO 2 -ODP) has received significant attention as an environmentally benign route for the propene production. However, the development of high-performance catalysts remains a critical challenge hindering its industrial implementation. In this work, CeO 2 samples with distinct morphologies resembling flowers (F-CeO 2 ), rods (R-CeO 2 ), spindles (SP-CeO 2 ), and sheets (SH-CeO 2 ) were successfully synthesized by simply changing the hydrothermal conditions, and the shape-dependent impact of oxygen-defect contents over CeO 2 on the structural and electronic properties of the impregnated PtSn/CeO 2 catalysts was studied for CO 2 -ODP. Characterizations reveal a positive correlation between the Pt electron density and oxygen-defect contents in an increasing order of PtSn/F-CeO 2 < PtSn/R-CeO 2 < PtSn/SP-CeO 2 < PtSn/SH-CeO 2 . In the case of the catalytic results, the same changing pattern is observed for the initial C 3 H 8 conversion and C 3 H 6 selectivity. Moreover, the highest initial propene space-time yield of 0.71 achieving over the PtSn/SH-CeO 2 catalyst is still retained at 0.35 after a time on stream of 200 min. This performance surpasses those of most reported CO 2 -ODP catalysts. The morphology-dependent catalytic phenomena are attributed mainly to the varied activation energies of CO 2 -ODP, which are determined by the oxygen defect-induced electronic and structural interplay between Pt, Sn, and CeO 2 . These findings provide valuable insights for the rational design and optimization of Pt-based catalysts for CO 2 -ODP, particularly in the selection of oxide supports.

Poly (triazine imide) (PTI) and graphene hybrids supported PtSn catalysts for enhanced electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol

Xiaoxia Jia,Qiangqiang Guan,Yang Chen,Yong Wang,Qiang Zhao,Jinping Li

Rational design support materials are important for improving the efficiency of Pt-based catalysts. A series of PTI-graphene hybrids supported Pt Sn catalysts with different PTI nanosheets contents were synthesized by polyol method . Physical characterization revealed that PTI nanosheets can prevent restacking of graphene nanosheets and Pt Sn nanoparticles around 2.5 nm are dispersed uniformly on PTI-graphene support materials. Compared with the graphene supported Pt Sn catalyst and commercial carbon black supported Pt catalyst, the PTI-graphene hybrids supported Pt Sn catalysts exhibit excellent ultraefficient performance toward ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The enhanced electrochemical activity can be attributed to the high specific surface area of the PTI-graphene supports and the strong interaction between Pt Sn atom and supports as a result of the incorporation of PTI nanosheets.
