Constructing adaptive biomaterials that can overcome rapid carrier recombination and relieve tumor microenvironments such as hypoxia and overexpression of GSH is considered one of the effective strategies for improving tumor therapy. Herein, the Pt–PtTe2 heterojunction was designed for enhancing tumor therapy. Superoxide anion free radicals (•O2–) can be generated through noninvasive in situ ultrasound (US) excitation, mainly since Pt–PtTe2 could produce more electrons and contribute to rapid charge transfer than those of PtTe2, and O2 gains electrons and converts into the •O2–. Pt–PtTe2 features multifunctional nanoenzyme-like activities such as oxidase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase. Interestingly, Pt–PtTe2 not only catalyzes H2O2 to generate O2 but also oxidizes reducing glutathione (GSH), thereby alleviating tumor hypoxia and amplifying oxidative stress and promoting tumor cell death. Pt–PtTe2 has the desired photothermal-conversion efficiency (50%) under the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) irradiation due to the strong electron thermal effects, further enhancing the efficiency of tumor therapy. This study provides insight into the tumor therapy strategies of an external-energy field-triggered Pt–PtTe2 heterojunction.

Compared to the first near-infrared (NIR-I) window (650–1000 nm), the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window (1000–1700 nm) is more valuable for photothermal treatment (PTT) due to its deeper tissue penetration and lower phototoxicity. However, the therapeutic efficacy of PTT remains suboptimal owing to the inherently low photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) of existing materials. Therefore, the development of nanomaterials with high PCE is a promising strategy for improving anti-tumor therapy. In this study, hollow semimetal PtTe 2 nanorods were synthesized. Their unique electronic properties and hollow structure contribute to achieving high PCE under NIR-II irradiation, while simultaneously promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Additionally, PtTe 2 catalyzed the endogenous conversion of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into oxygen (O 2 ) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), further enhancing anti-tumor effects via chemodynamic therapy (CDT). In vivo experiments confirmed the excellent biocompatibility of PtTe 2 , and laser treatment following PtTe 2 administration significantly inhibited tumor growth, demonstrating its favorable therapeutic efficacy. This study establishes a new nanoplatform for the treatment of malignant tumors through photothermal/photodynamic/chemodynamic therapy, providing valuable insights for future research on multifunctional cancer therapies.

PtTe 2 , a member of the noble metal dichalcogenides (NMDs), has aroused great interest in exploring its behavior in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to the unique type-II topological semimetallic nature. In this work, a simple template-free hydrothermal method to obtain the phosphorus-doped (P-doped) PtTe 2 nanocages with abundant amorphous and crystalline interface (A/C-P-PtTe 2 ) is developed. Revealed by density functional theory calculations, the atomic Te vacancies can spontaneously form on the basal planes of PtTe 2 by the P doping, which results in the unsaturated Pt atoms exposed as the active sites in the amorphous layer for HER. Owing to the defective structure, the A/C-P-PtTe 2 catalysts have the fast Tafel step determined kinetics in HER, which contributes to an ultralow overpotential ( η = 28 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) and a small Tafel slope of 37 mV dec −1 . More importantly, benefiting from the inner stable crystalline P-PtTe 2 nanosheets, limited decay of the performance is observed after chronopotentiometry test. This work reveals the important role of the inherent relationship between structure and activity in PtTe 2 for HER, which may bring another enlightenment for the design of efficient catalysts based on NMDs in the near future.

We synthesized PtTe2 nanoflakes via chemical transformation utilizing Te nanoflakes as templates. Aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy confirmed this assertion and revealed the distinctive in-plane layered structure of the synthesized PtTe2 nanoflakes. The transformation process and reaction mechanisms were investigated using particle swarm optimization algorithms in combination with first-principles density functional calculations. According to the calculations, it was found that the initial chemical bonds automatically transition to the cross-sectional direction, representing the first experimental confirmation of the spontaneous directional transformation of layers and chemical bonds within multivalent Te layers. It is noteworthy that this transformation exhibits a significant dimension-dependent characteristic. This study has broadened the range of growth processes for two-dimensional materials, contributing to a better understanding of transformation behaviors between chemical stimuli and nanocrystals.

Platinum telluride (PtTe2), a member of metallic noble-transition-metal dichalcogenides (MNTMDs), has emerged as an indispensable candidate for superconducting, magnetic, and other electronic phase engineering, as well as optic applications. Herein, we report the van der Waals epitaxy of high-crystalline few-layer PtTe2 crystals on inert mica. Density functional theory calculations are used to illustrate a type-II Dirac cone along the Γ-A direction in the PtTe2 crystal. Impressively, the PtTe2 devices exhibit an extra-high electrical conductivity of 107 S m–1, 1000 times higher than that of metallic 1T MoS2. Meanwhile, the magnetoresistance effect at low temperatures reaches 800% in a field of 9.0 T. Furthermore, near-field nanooptical properties are assessed on PtTe2. Considering the subwavelength effect, the plasmonic wavelength λp ≈ 200 nm of 1T PtTe2 is obtained and the carrier concentration calculated from λp is about 1.22 × 1015 cm–2, which is 100-fold higher than that of MoTe2 in the previous reports. Therefore, our work demonstrates the growth of MNTMDs and provides insights into the plasmonic properties of 2D metallic telluride compounds.

The recent discovery of topological semimetals has stimulated extensive research interest due to their unique electronic properties and novel transport properties related to a chiral anomaly. However, the studies to date are largely limited to bulk crystals and exfoliated flakes. Here, we report the controllable synthesis of ultrathin two-dimensional (2D) platinum telluride (PtTe2) nanosheets with tunable thickness and investigate the thickness-dependent electronic properties. We show that PtTe2 nanosheets can be readily grown, using a chemical vapor deposition approach, with a hexagonal or triangular geometry and a lateral dimension of up to 80 μm, and the thickness of the nanosheets can be systematically tailored from over 20 to 1.8 nm by reducing the growth temperature or increasing the flow rate of the carrier gas. X-ray-diffraction, transmission-electron microscopy, and electron-diffraction studies confirm that the resulting 2D nanosheets are high-quality single crystals. Raman spectroscopic studies show characteristics Eg and A1g vibration modes at ∼109 and ∼155 cm–1, with a systematic red shift with increasing nanosheet thickness. Electrical transport studies show the 2D PtTe2 nanosheets display an excellent conductivity up to 2.5 × 106 S m–1 and show strong thickness-tunable electrical properties, with both the conductivity and its temperature dependence varying considerably with the thickness. Moreover, 2D PtTe2 nanosheets show an extraordinary breakdown current density up to 5.7 × 107 A/cm2, the highest breakdown current density achieved in 2D metallic transition-metal dichalcogenides to date.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma ranks as the sixth most common malignant tumor worldwide, with the majority of cases manifesting as oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). The current clinical standard for treating OSCC consists of surgical resection followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. This multimodal approach, however, is associated with substantial morbidity, significant perioperative risk, and frequent systemic toxicities that markedly impair quality of life. Therefore, novel, more effective, and safer treatment strategies are urgently needed. Here, PtTe 2 nanorods were synthesized and encapsulated in sodium alginate (ALG) to form a novel injectable hydrogel for the precise treatment of OSCC. This ALG hydrogel prolongs the intratumoral retention of PtTe 2 , ensuring sustained local availability. PtTe 2 exhibits tumor microenvironment-responsive catalytic activity, catalyzing the conversion of hydrogen peroxide into highly toxic hydroxyl radicals via Fenton-like reactions. Moreover, PtTe 2 possesses exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency, enabling precise, light-driven hyperthermia that selectively and effectively ablates tumor cells. By synergistically accelerating the kinetics of Fenton-like reactions through photothermal effects, the generation of reactive oxygen species is substantially amplified, effectively overwhelming the antioxidant defense system and achieving significant antitumor effects. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments demonstrated that the PtTe 2 - ALG hydrogel achieved robust antitumor efficacy and excellent biosafety. Transcriptomic analyses revealed significant activation of apoptosis-related signaling cascades, elucidating the molecular mechanism of PtTe 2 - based tumor therapy. By combining chemodynamic and photothermal therapy within a single, injectable platform, this work provides a promising, low-toxicity strategy for the clinical management of OSCC.

Designing efficient formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) catalysts with remarkable membrane electrode assembly (MEA) performance in a direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) medium is significant yet challenging. Herein, we report that the monoclinic-phased platinum–tellurium nanotrepang (m-PtTe NT) can be adopted as a highly active, selective, and stable FAOR catalyst with a desirable direct reaction pathway. The m-PtTe NT exhibits the high specific and mass activities of 6.78 mA cm–2 and 3.2 A mgPt–1, respectively, which are 35.7/22.9, 2.8/2.6, and 3.9/2.9 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C, rhombohedral-phased Pt2Te3 NT (r-Pt2Te3 NT), and trigonal-phased PtTe2 NT (t-PtTe2 NT), respectively. Simultaneously, the highest reaction tendency for the direct FAOR pathway and the best tolerance to poisonous CO intermediate can also be realized by m-PtTe NT. More importantly, even in a single-cell medium, the m-PtTe NT can display a much higher MEA power density (171.4 mW cm–2) and stability (53.2% voltage loss after 5660 s) than those of commercial Pt/C, demonstrating the great potential in operating DFAFC device. The in-situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy jointly demonstrate that the unique nanostructure of m-PtTe NT can effectively optimize dehydrogenation steps and inhibit the CO intermediate adsorption, as well as promote the oxidation of noxious CO intermediate, thus achieving the great improvement of FAOR activity, poisoning tolerance, and stability. Density functional theory calculations further reveal that the direct pathway is the most favorable on m-PtTe NT than r-Pt2Te3 NT and t-PtTe2 NT. The higher activation energy to produce CO and the relatively weaker binding with CO of m-PtTe NT result in the better CO tolerance. This work achieves remarkable FAOR and MEA performances of advanced Pt-based anodic catalysts for DFAFCs via a phase engineering strategy.

Biofilm-associated infections (BAIs) pose a serious threat to public health; in particular, a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-rich biofilm microenvironment can weaken the immunological response of antimicrobial natural killer (NK) cells. Conventional phototherapy cannot consistently inhibit the escape of planktonic bacteria from BAIs, thereby enabling persistent and recurrent infections. In this study, a thymosin β4 bio-orthogonally labeled NK (βNK) cytomembrane is proposed to decorate PtTe 2 nanozymes (βNK@PtTe 2 ) with hyperthermia and NK cells immune re-rousing to eliminate BAIs at all stages. Te-doped PtTe 2 exhibits outstanding ROS scavenging activity through an electron-enriched catalytic center with strong p-d orbital hybridization, and it generates a thermally driven force for disorganizing dense biofilm structures under laser irradiation. After biofilm elimination and ROS scavenging, the βNK cytomembrane in βNK@PtTe 2 selectively promotes chemotaxis and activates conventional NK (cNK) cells to kill planktonic bacteria that escape from biofilm disintegration at the infection site. In vivo, this therapeutic paradigm of immune microenvironment remodeling induces cNK cells to develop into long-lived tissue-resident NK (trNK) cells with an immunological memory against reinvading pathogens, thereby effectively preventing secondary infections. Overall, the as-prepared βNK@PtTe 2 combined with NK cells provides a systematic photo-immunologic strategy to inhibit recurrent biofilms and treat infectious diseases caused by such infections.
