Study on the Scale and Corrosion Inhibition Effect of Curcumin-Based Novel Polymers

Jinwei Qi,Jihui Li,Kaili Liu,Huixin Zhang,Jian Han,Jianxin Chen

The curcumin-malic acid-aspartic acid polymer (PCMA) as a new water treatment agent was prepared by solid phase synthesis of curcumin, malic acid and aspartic acid. The static scale inhibition experiments showed that PCMA can inhibit CaCO 3 and CaSO 4 scale formation by 100.0 % and had excellent scale inhibition effect under various experimental conditions. The mechanism of action of PCMA was obtained by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and molecular dynamics simulation. Electrochemical test showed that PCMA is an anodic corrosion inhibitor that achieves 93.1 % corrosion inhibition by forming a protective film on the surface of Q235 carbon steel. Besides, fluorescence spectra proved that PCMA has stable fluorescence intensity.

Synergistic inhibition effect of imidazoline and thiourea on pitting corrosion of Q235 carbon steel

Shanjian Li,Zekun Wang,Haoxuan He,Panfeng Wu

Pitting corrosion is a significant issue which significantly shorten the service life of carbon steel. In this study, imidazoline and thiourea are combined to assess the synergistic in the localized corrosion of Q235 carbon steel by a combined system. In detail, five different proportions of corrosion inhibitors are used in the simulated corrosion solution (5 wt. % NaCl + 0.5 wt. % CH 3 COOH + 1.0 wt. % Na 2 S) in the closed area to investigate the corrosion inhibition performance of Q235 steel at 80 °C. The corrosion behavior of the steel in the simulated solution was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test. Due to the combination of imidazoline (IM) and thiourea (TU) corrosion inhibitors, the corrosion inhibitors in the simulated solution of the occlusion zone reduce the migration of corrosive anions to the occlusion zone and slowed the acidification of the solution resulting in lower concentrations of Cl - and S 2- to varying degrees and reaching a higher pH of the solution. As a result, the compounded corrosion inhibitors exhibit improved corrosion inhibition rate (80 mg/L IM+20 mg/L TU (86.91 %), 50 mg/L IM+ 50 mg/L TU (95.67 %), 20 mg/L IM+ 80 mg/L TU (86.16 %)) to Q235 steel, which is superior to that using imidazoline (63.42 %) or thiourea (92.77 %) alone. This enhanced performances fully prove the synergistic effect of imidazoline with thiourea.

Designing a Highly Stable Slippery Organogel on Q235 Carbon Steel for Inhibiting Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion

Yuanzhen Liang,Peng Wang,Dun Zhang

Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) accelerates the corrosion and degradation of metal materials due to the settlement of microorganisms on the surface. However, environmentally friendly and efficient methods to fabricate antifouling and anticorrosion surfaces are still lacking. Inspired by Nepenthes, a slippery liquid-infused porous surface (SLIPS) has been proven to be an efficient way to inhibit settlement of microorganisms on the metal surface and the following MIC due to the existence of a mobile defect-free lubricant layer. However, the stability of the lubricant layer and substrate of the SLIPS prevented its long-term antifouling and anticorrosion application. Herein, a highly stable slippery organogel was fabricated by depositing a homogeneous mixture of PDMS (base and curing agent), silicone oil, triethoxyvinylsilane, and SiO2 on Q235 and curing in an oven. Triethoxyvinylsilane was not only able to cross-link with the curing agent of PDMS through hydrosilylation but also able to interlink the organogel and Q235 through condensation between the −OH of the metal surface and hydrolyzed siloxane. As a result, the adhesion force between the organogel without triethoxyvinylsilane and the substrate (0.45 MPa) increased to 1.50 MPa for the organogel with triethoxyvinylsilane and SiO2. Also, the tensile strength of the organogel without SiO2 (0.97 MPa) increased to 3.88 MPa for the organogel with 2 wt % SiO2 because of the high elastic modulus of SiO2, which was important to improving its stability under external force. In addition, the organogel showed stable oil distribution and slippery performance after spinning at 4000 rpm for 30 s. Then, the bacterial settlement demonstrated that the organogel could effectively inhibit Pseudoalteromonas sp. settlement on the substrate under both static and dynamic conditions. Finally, an electrochemical test indicated that the MIC could be effectively mitigated by the organogel. This study provides an efficient method to fabricate a highly stable slippery surface on a metal surface for its potential application in mitigating MIC.

Microwave Synthesis of Eco-friendly Nitrogen Doped Carbon Dots for the Corrosion Inhibition of Q235 Carbon Steel in 0.1 M HCl

Mingjun Cui,Yujie Qiang,Wei Wang,Haichao Zhao,Siming Ren

In this work, nitrogen doped carbon dots (NCDs) were prepared with citric acid monohydrate (CA·H 2 O) and ethanolamine (EA) via microwave method. In combination with electrochemical techniques, weight loss and SEM, it is found that nitrogen doping in carbon dots effectively suppresses the corrosion of Q235 carbon steel in HCl solution owing to the presence of pyrrolic N in NCDs. Especially for NCDs (1:10), the optimum inhibition efficiency is about 89% after 1 h of immersion in 0.1 M HCl solution with 500 ppm of concentration. By further calculation, the Δ G ads 0 value for NCDs (1:10) is -26.65 kJ·mol -1 , indicating the adsorption of NCDs on Q235 carbon steel surface involves both chemisorption and physisorption. In addition, NCDs still remain superior corrosion inhibition performance with the prolonged immersion time and ascending temperature.

Corrosion inhibition behavior of electrochemically synthesized carbon dots on Q235 carbon steel

Jiajia Zhu,Mengyue Zhu,Renhui Zhang,Zhongyi He,Liping Xiong,Lei Guo

Carbon dots (CDs) are spherical zero-dimensional carbon nanomaterials, generally below 10 nm in size, which have received increasing attention in the field of corrosion because of various advantages such as good water solubility, abundant raw materials, and environmental protection. In this work, water-soluble carbon dots (CDs) with particle sizes of 5–10 nm are obtained by electrochemical oxidation with anhydrous ethanol. FTIR, Raman, UV–Vis, XPS, and TEM are used to characterize the obtained CDs, and electrochemical tests are used to investigate the anti-corrosion performance of the CDs. The results reveal that the corrosion inhibition performance increased with the addition of CDs, and the highest corrosion inhibition efficiency reaches 98% when the addition amount is 200 mg/L. Moreover, the inhibition mechanism for CDs needs to be further investigated, and the stable adsorption of CDs on carbon steel to form adsorption film may be the key factor for its good corrosion inhibition performance.

Electrochemical and surface investigations of N, S codoped carbon dots as effective corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in acidic solution

Lei Guo,Lei Zhu,Savaş Kaya,Rui Sun,Alessandra Gilda Ritacca,Kai Wang,Jun Chang

Mild steel is a versatile, inexpensive, highly flexible, and easily weldable material widely used in construction, pipelines, transportation, shipping, and other industries. However, it is also extremely susceptible to corrosion processes under the influence of weather phenomena, posing a significant threat to society and human health. In this work, we investigated the corrosion inhibition capacity of a new type of N, S codoped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) on Q235 carbon steel in the acidic medium. The goal product was synthesized by hydrothermal method using o-phenylenediamine and amidinothiourea as precursors. Combined with electrochemistry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM), and theoretical calculations, the inhibition properties of N, S-CDs on Q235 carbon steel in HCl solution were evaluated. The potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) results indicated that the corrosion inhibition efficiency reached 90.3 % and 92.4 % at 100 mg/L concentration, respectively. Indeed, the presence of N, S-CDs reduced the electric double-layer capacitance, increased the thickness of the adsorption film on the carbon steel surface, and reduced the corrosion current density, resulting in a delay of corrosion. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis and surface characterization confirmed the successful doping of N, S and the formation of adsorption films, the Langmuir adsorption isotherm also confirmed the superior inhibition of N, S-CDs on the surface of Q235 carbon steel through physical and chemical adsorption mechanisms. At the same time, quantum chemical calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed its inhibition mechanism at the molecular/atomic level.

Study on adsorption behavior of ketoconazole on Q235 mild steel in 1.0 M HCl solution with electrochemical measurement

Y.W. Liu,Y. Chen,X.H. Chen,Z.N. Yang,Y. Xie,Z. Zhang

The inhibition effect of ketoconazole (KCZ) on Q235 mild steel corrosion in 1.0 M HCl solution was studied using weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), electrochemical noise (EN), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray detector (EDX). Results reveal that the inhibition efficiency increases with increasing the KCZ inhibitor concentration and the adsorption behavior of ketoconazole onto Q235 mild steel follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm with negative value of Δ G a d s 0 , suggesting a spontaneous adsorption process . It is also found that the type of adsorption of KCZ on the mild steel surface belongs to chemisorption . New parameter of corrosion active energy C AE proposed from EN measurements which representing the electrode reaction speed exhibited the same variation trend with the corrosion rate.

A pH-responsive intelligent coating based on composite CaCO3 microspheres for long-term corrosion protection of Q235 carbon steel

You Wu,Yangyang Duan,Juan Qiu,Xiang Gao,Houyi Ma

The aim of this work is to develop an eco-friendly pH-responsive intelligent coating with long-term corrosion protection by a convenient method. Herein, an eco-friendly and long-term pH-responsive intelligent anti-corrosion coating (BTA-CaCO 3 @TA coating) is fabricated through the addition of a hydrophilic pH-responsive release material (BTA-CaCO 3 @TA microspheres) into a waterborne epoxy resin coating. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy results indicated that BTA-CaCO 3 @TA microspheres could endow the coating with long-term corrosion protection. The |Z| f =0.01Hz values of the BTA-CaCO 3 @TA coating after 130 days of immersion were still higher than those of the pure waterborne epoxy resin coating at the beginning of immersion. The excellent long-term protection performance was related to the good dispersibility of BTA-CaCO 3 @TA microspheres in the waterborne coatings, the TA conversion film and the BTA inhibitor protection film, which formed on the steel surface in situ. This synergistic strategy demonstrated its future application for protecting metals from corrosion.

Novel 1, 3, 5-triazine derivative is a highly efficient inhibitor of corrosion of Q235 carbon steel in an acidic medium

Cunhua Wei,Ge Xu,Jin Yu

A novel triazine derivative, 2, 4-diamino-6-dodecamido-1, 3, 5-triazine (DT), is synthesized by the dehydration condensation of melamine and lauric acid, and its inhibitive performances for the corrosion of Q235 carbon steel in 1 mol/L HCl solution is investigated by electrochemical polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscope. The results reveal that its best inhibition efficiency reaches 96.98% at a concentration of 2.5 g/L. The calculation results of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption of DT on carbon steel surface obeys Langmuir adsorption isotherm with both physical and chemical adsorption. It is demonstrated that long-chain amide (>8C) substituted 1, 3, 5-triazine derivative has the synergistic corrosion inhibition effect of the surface fixation on metal iron and the hydrophobic adsorption layer.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Chitosan/Perillaldehyde Schiff Base as a Corrosion Inhibitor for Q235 Carbon Steel in Acidic Medium

Mohammed Mustafa Yousif Modwi,Yafei Liu,Fuyuan Li,Ying Lv,Abdalbagi Ismail,Dafaalla Hassan,Huixia Feng

Herein, the eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor Schiff Bases Based on Chitosan has been successfully synthesized, and its new structure was characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H NMR). The efficiency of corrosion inhibitors was studied via classic weight loss, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) methods. The studies indicated that the Per/CS corrosion in 1.0 M HCl has mixed-type behavior with inhibition efficiency with 600 mg L -1 reaching 97 % at 25 °C. Thermodynamic calculations, such as the equilibrium constant of adsorption (K ads ) and the free energy of energy of adsorption (ΔG ads ), suggested that Per/CS exhibits a mixed mode of adsorption. The activation energy, enthalpy, and entropy were calculated and discussed. The results indicated the formation of a protective film of Per/CS inhibitor on the Q235 carbon steel surface, which was investigated via various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Water contact angle, and atomic force microscopy. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated the existence of Per/CS molecules on the carbon steel surfaces. Quantum chemical calculations, DFT, and Fukui indices were also applied to describe the adsorption mechanism. Adsorption locator and MD simulations were also performed to describe the ability of the Per/CS molecule to adsorb on the Fe (110).

Carbon dots as new eco-friendly and effective corrosion inhibitor

Mingjun Cui,Siming Ren,Qunji Xue,Haichao Zhao,Liping Wang

Inspired by the high water solubility and low cytotoxicity of N doped carbon dots (CDs) prepared by using antibiotic aminosalicylic acid (ASA) as precursor, we anticipate that these CDs may possess an excellent protective ability to inhibit the corrosion of carbon steel in aggressive solutions owing to its special structure. Therefore, the investigation on the inhibiting effect of CDs as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for Q235 carbon steel corrosion in 1 M HCl solution is first reported. Electrochemical techniques , weight loss, morphological and elements characterization are combined to investigate the inhibiting effect and corrosion mechanism. The results show that corrosion of Q235 carbon steel in 1 M HCl solution is significantly inhibited by the addition of CDs, which is attributed to the formation of CDs adsorption film, and the adsorption of CDs obeys a Langmuir adsorption isotherm . Besides, the protection efficiency increases with increasing concentration of CDs and prolonged immersion time, and reaches equilibrium eventually.

Corrosion inhibition of eco-friendly nitrogen-doped carbon dots for carbon steel in acidic media: Performance and mechanism investigation

Mengyue Zhu,Zhongyi He,Lei Guo,Renhui Zhang,Valentine Chikaodili Anadebe,Ime Bassey Obot,Xingwen Zheng

In this work, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were obtained by hydrothermal method with citric acid and ethylenediamine as precursors. The corrosion inhibition performance and mechanism of prepared the NCDs on the Q235 carbon steel in 1 M HCl solution were evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization curve, and surface analysis. The results that the NCDs exhibited 93% of inhibition efficiency at 100 mg/L. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the NCDs adsorbed on the metal surface and effectively inhibited the electron transfer process. The potentiodynamic polarization suggested that NCDs were excellent mix-type corrosion inhibition. Furthermore, NCDs successfully prevented the dissolution of anode metal and the evolution of cathode hydrogen ions. The adsorption of the NCDs followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm indicated physical and chemical adsorption. At the same time, the adsorption mechanism was analyzed, guiding the use of carbon dots as environment-friendly corrosion inhibitors in the future.
