A lithium aluminum iron layered double hydroxides/multiwalled carbon nanotubes/quaternized chitosan (LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS) composite membrane with lithium-ion vacancies (Li + -trap) was fabricated through vacuum filtration method and pre-desorption process. The Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane had been developed for the selective extraction of Li + within the ship lock-type ion selective permeability (SL-ISP) system. In the Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane, the Li + -trap within LiAlFe-LDHs was pivotal for achieving selective Li + extraction. This selectivity was realized through the cyclic intercalation of Li + into the Li + -trap sites within the interlayer structure of LiAlFe-LDHs, a process that also facilitates the permeation of Cl - . The interference of impurity ions was further eliminated by the SL-ISP system, thus facilitating the selective extraction of Li + . Upon investigation, the Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane was found to achieve a Li + flux of 0.055 mol·m −2 ·h −1 and a separation factor of 8.3 at an equimolar concentration ( C Mg, Li = 0.05 M) within the SL-ISP system. Additionally, the Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane demonstrated excellent separation performance in simulated brine, with a calculated Li + permeation flux of 0.053 mol·m −2 ·h −1 . The separation factors of Li + /Mg 2+ , Li + /K + , Li + /Na + and Li + /Ca 2+ reached values of 91.84, 69.75, 81.51 and 17.99, respectively. Therefore, the Li + -trap LiAlFe-LDHs/MWCNTs/QCS composite membrane could be effectively applied in the SL-ISP system for the selective extraction of Li + .

Bacterial infection is one of the leading causes of human death globally and is considered to be an urgent public health challenge. It is important to accurately and rapidly detect and kill pathogenic microorganisms. Therefore, a multifunctional platform for sensitive detection and efficient elimination of pathogenic bacteria should be developed to reduce the threat of bacteria. In this study, an integrated strategy based on Fe 3 O 4 -quaternary ammonium chitosan-polyetherimide-Cu-aptamer (Fe 3 O 4 -QCS-PEI-Cu-aptamer) and ladder-branch hybridization chain reaction (HCR) was proposed for the detection and inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ). The aptamer-complementary chain (aptamer-CP) conjugated to the surface of Fe 3 O 4 -QCS-PEI-Cu induces CP release in the presence of S. aureus , further initiating the ladder-branch HCR reaction and achieving signal amplification. Under optimal conditions, the developed sensor demonstrated a limit of detection (LOD) of 3 CFU/mL for S. aureus and exhibited high selectivity against several other pathogenic bacteria. Moreover, the Fe 3 O 4 -QCS-PEI-Cu-aptasensor showed potent antibacterial properties under near infrared (NIR) irradiation, achieving an antimicrobial efficiency of 99.946%. This strategy synergistically combined the high-sensitivity molecular detection with the antibacterial activity of novel nanomaterials activated by near infrared light, providing a new insight into the prevention of bacterial infections. Natural polysaccharide polymer hydrogels have garnered significant attention in biomedical applications due to their exceptional biocompatibility and biodegradability. However, their practical utility is constrained by inherent limitations such as inadequate mechanical strength and poor toughness. These deficiencies often result in premature drug release and reduced functional longevity when applied in drug delivery systems. To address these challenges, the incorporation of self-healing systems based on dynamic covalent or non-covalent bonds has emerged as an effective solution. In this study, chitosan (CS) was first quaternized (marked as QCS) and then compounded with gelatin and polyacrylamide, using 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) as the model drug. The Fe 3+ @ TA system, formed by adding Fe 3+ and TA, served as a redox initiator to enable free radical polymerization of acrylamide and shorten the preparation time of hydrogel. Ultimately, a smart hydrogel with an interpenetrating network structure was successfully prepared. By adjusting the concentrations of CS and TPP, the regulation of the microstructure and physicochemical properties of the hydrogel was achieved. The results showed that the hydrogel, as a candidate multifunctional dressing, possessed excellent tensile and compressive properties, self-healable capability, and appropriate repeatable adhesion performance. In vitro drug release and antimicrobial assays demonstrated that the hydrogel exhibits pH-responsive release characteristics and effective antimicrobial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . Comprehensive biocompatibility assessments, including cytotoxicity and hemolysis testing, confirmed the material's biological safety profile. These findings collectively establish the strong and flexible composite hydrogel as a promising platform with extensive potential for drug delivery applications.

Based on the superior selectivity of bismuth oxybromide (BiOBr) for Br - , the excellent electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and the ion exchange capacity of quaternized chitosan (QCS), a three-dimensional network composite membrane electrode CNTs/QCS/BiOBr was constructed, in which BiOBr served as the storage space for Br - , CNTs provided the electron transfer pathway, and QCS cross-linked by glutaraldehyde (GA) was used for ion transfer. The CNTs/QCS/BiOBr composite membrane exhibits superior conductivity after the introduction of the polymer electrolyte, which is seven orders of magnitude higher than that of conventional ion-exchange membranes. Furthermore, the addition of the electroactive material BiOBr improved the adsorption capacity for Br - by a factor of 2.7 in electrochemically switched ion exchange (ESIX) system. Meanwhile, the CNTs/QCS/BiOBr composite membrane displays excellent Br - selectivity in mixed solutions of Br - , Cl - , SO 4 2- and NO 3 – . Therein, the covalent bond cross-linking within the CNTs/QCS/BiOBr composite membrane endows it great electrochemical stability. The synergistic adsorption mechanism of the CNTs/QCS/BiOBr composite membrane provides a new direction for achieving more efficient ion separation.

Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF), a life-threatening complication following pancreatic surgery, demands innovative biomaterials to prevent infection and promote healing simultaneously. Traditional sealants lack controlled degradation, mechanical robustness, and antibacterial efficacy. Here, we developed a multifunctional hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), quaternized chitosan (QCS), and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to address these challenges. The PVA/QCS/AgNP hydrogel was synthesized via UV-induced reduction of Ag⁺ and freeze‒thaw cycles, yielding a mechanically stable network with a uniform AgNP dispersion. In vitro, the hydrogel exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli , and other pathogens while maintaining > 90 % fibroblast viability. Its controlled AgNP release profile balanced antimicrobial potency and biocompatibility. In a rat pancreatic fistula model, the hydrogel significantly reduced fluid leakage and inflammation, accelerated collagen deposition, and normalized serum amylase levels within 14 days. A transcriptomic analysis revealed the upregulation of the cell cycle and extracellular matrix remodeling pathways, in addition to the suppression of proinflammatory cytokines, elucidating its dual roles in infection control and tissue regeneration. By integrating robust sealing, enzymatic resistance, and immunomodulatory properties, this hydrogel represents a clinically translatable solution for POPF management, outperforming conventional therapies and advancing the design of multifunctional biomaterials for complex surgical applications.

Bacterial contamination remains a critical safety concern in platelet transfusion, and there is an urgent demand for decontamination technologies that eliminate contaminating bacteria without damaging platelet viability and physiological function. Herein, Fe3O4-QCS-PEI-Cu-apt microparticles with enlarged magnetic cores were rationally fabricated to improve aptamer immobilization, aiming at targeted bacterial elimination via near-infrared (NIR) irradiation while maintaining platelet function. Fluorescence assays confirmed their specific targeting capability towardStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) without binding to platelets. Magnetic separation experiments demonstrated that the aptamer-functionalized microparticles could efficiently capture and remove 91.35% ofS. aureusfrom platelets. NIR irradiation of the Fe3O4-QCS-PEI-Cu core induced marked bactericidal activity againstS. aureusin suspension, as determined by plate counting and LIVE/DEAD staining. This antibacterial ability originated from the intrinsic photo-responsive property of the composite rather than from aptamer-mediated recognition, and could be easily extended to bacteria captured by aptamer-functionalized particles. Comprehensive biocompatibility evaluations, including morphological observation, hematological parameter analysis, CD62P expression detection, and thromboelastography (TEG) were performed. And the results demonstrated that there were no significant changes in platelet morphology, count, activation state, or overall hemostatic function, apart from an increase in the α angle. This platform achieves efficient targeted NIR-triggered antibacterial efficacy while maintaining excellent platelet compatibility, offering a promising strategy to enhance the safety of platelet transfusion.

With the aging population, the incidence of diabetes is increasing. Diabetes often leads to restricted neovascularization, antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, reduced wound perfusion, and elevated reactive oxygen species, resulting in impaired microenvironments and prolonged wound healing. Hydrogels are important tissue engineering materials for wound healing, known for their high water content and good biocompatibility. However, most hydrogels suffer from poor mechanical properties and difficulty in achieving sustained drug release, hindering their clinical application. Inspired by the incorporation of fibers to enhance the mechanical properties of "adobe," core-shell fibers were introduced into the hydrogel. This not only improves the mechanical strength of the hydrogel but also enables the possibility of sustained drug release. In this study, we first prepared core-shell fibers with PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)) and PCL (polycaprolactone). PLGA was loaded with P2 (Parathyroid hormone-related peptides-2), developed by our group, which promotes angiogenesis and cell proliferation. We then designed a QTG (QCS/TA/Gel, quaternary ammonium chitosan/tannic acid/gelatin) hydrogel, incorporating the core-shell fibers and the anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib into the QTG hydrogel. This hydrogel exhibits excellent antibacterial properties and biocompatibility, along with good mechanical performance. This hydrogel demonstrates excellent water absorption and swelling capabilities. In the early stages of wound healing, the hydrogel can absorb the wound exudate, maintaining the stability of the wound microenvironment. This hydrogel promotes neovascularization and collagen deposition, accelerating the healing of diabetic wounds, with a healing rate exceeding 95 % by day 14. Overall, this study provides a promising strategy for developing tissue engineering scaffolds for diabetic wound healing.

Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has proven effective in blocking tumor-supplied arteries and delivering localized chemotherapeutic treatment to combat tumors. However, traditional embolic TACE agents exhibit certain limitations, including insufficient chemotherapeutic drug-loading and sustained-release capabilities, non-biodegradability, susceptibility to aggregation, and unstable mechanical properties. This study introduces a novel approach to address these shortcomings by utilizing a complex coacervate as a liquid embolic agent for tumor chemoembolization. By mixing oppositely charged quaternized chitosan (QCS) and gum arabic (GA), a QCS/GA polymer complex coacervate with shear-thinning property is obtained. Furthermore, the incorporation of the contrast agent Iohexol (I) and the chemotherapeutic doxorubicin (DOX) into the coacervate leads to the development of an X-ray-opaque QCS/GA/I/DOX coacervate embolic agent capable of carrying drugs. This innovative formulation effectively embolizes the renal arteries without recanalization. More importantly, the QCS/GA/I/DOX coacervate can successfully embolize the supplying arteries of the VX2 tumors in rabbit ear and liver. Coacervates can locally release DOX to enhance its therapeutic effects, resulting in excellent antitumor efficacy. This coacervate embolic agent exhibits substantial potential for tumor chemoembolization due to its shear-thinning performance, excellent drug-loading and sustained-release capabilities, good biocompatibility, thrombogenicity, biodegradability, safe and effective embolic performance, and user-friendly application.

The most important function of skin is to prevent biological dehydration and protect internal structures from the environment. When a wound becomes infected, the bacteria cause a sustained inflammatory response at the infected site, further delaying the healing process. Therefore, the search for better antibacterial strategies has become a topic of great concern. Therefore, the development of multifunctional hydrogels with antibacterial properties, ROS removal, and hemostasis is urgently required for promoting wound healing process. Chitosan is the only cationic natural polysaccharide with good biocompatibility, antibacterial and hemostatic ability. It is a candidate material to prepare hydrogel wound dressing. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural biological macromolecule that belongs to a group of heteropolysaccharides known as non-sulfated glycosaminoglycans. It is a major component of the skin extracellular matrix (ECM) and is involved in inflammation, angiogenesis, and tissue regeneration. Here, the hydrogel was designed with the natural macromolecular of the gallic acid-grafted quaternized chitosan (GA-QCS) and oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHA) via Schiff base and/or Michael addition reaction. It was found that the GA-QCS/OHA hydrogel exhibited multifunctional capabilities with injectable, hemostasis, degradation, and release of medicines. In addiation, GA-QCS/OHA hydrogels exhibited remarkable antioxidant and migration promoting effects in vitro. And the mupirocin-loaded GA-QCS/OHA hydrogels had inhibitory effects on E. coli (Gram-negative bacterium) and S. aureus (Gram-positive bacterium) in vitro. A full-thickness skin of S. aureus infection mouse wound model was used to test the bioactive effect of the hydrogels and the accelerated wound healing was obtained due to the inhibiting the proinflammatory factor TNF-α and upregulating the vascularization factor CD31. This study proposed an effective strategy based on antioxidant, antibacterial, self-healing multifunctional hydrogel for wound healing under various infectious complications. This natural macromolecular hydrogel could act as an effective reactive oxygen species scavenger to promote the wound healing in the future.

Medical catheters are highly susceptible to friction and infection when intervening or implanting in the body, and to thrombosis when in contact with blood. Coating medical catheters with lubricant and antibacterial hydrogel is an effective strategy but struggle to achieve. Here, hydrogel coating on the catheter surface with lubrication and antibacterial properties was constructed by the rapid polymerization of acrylamide (AAM) and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) in the presence of quaternary ammonium chitosan (QCS) based on the redox-based cross-linking method. First, the medical catheter surface was decorated with a polyethyleneimine (PEI) adhesive layer. The pre-gel solution was then applied to the catheter surface, followed by immersion in an aqueous FeSO 4 ·7H 2 O solution, where a large amount of SO 4 -• was generated by a redox reaction between ammonium persulfate (APS) and Fe 2+ , which rapidly triggered the monomer to cross-link to form the coating. Polyelectrolyte PEI as the adhesive layer could bind the coating to the substrate through hydrogen bonding interactions and confer antimicrobial properties to the coating with the assistance of QCS (antibacterial rate of 95.88 % against E. coli and 97.11 % against B. subtilis). The hydrogel coatings exhibited outstanding lubricity with a low coefficient of friction (COF ≈ 0.053) and excellent antifouling properties (resists non-specific protein adsorption, inhibits platelet adhesion and prevents thrombosis (The clotting time was extended from 25.6 s to 74.7 s)) based on the integration of SBMA. This work shed new light on the design of hydrogel coatings to achieve modification of the substrate surface.

Infectious bone defects pose significant clinical challenges due to persistent infection and impaired bone healing. Icam1+ macrophages were identified as crucial and previously unrecognized regulators in the repair of bone defects, where impaired oxidative phosphorylation within this macrophage subset represents a significant barrier to effective bone regeneration. To address this challenge, dual-responsive iron-doped barium titanate (BFTO) nanoparticles were synthesized with magnetic and ultrasonic properties. These nanoparticles were further loaded with the anti-inflammatory agent curcumin and coated with engineered mesenchymal stem cell membranes (EMM) modified with γ3 peptide, creating BFTO-Cur@EMM nanoparticles specifically designed to target Icam1+ macrophages. These nanoparticles were shown to disrupt bacterial biofilms under alternating magnetic fields (AMF) and to activate oxidative phosphorylation and osteogenic immune responses in Icam1+ macrophages via low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS). Transcriptomic sequencing and validation experiments demonstrated that this approach activates oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) by stimulating the JAK2-STAT3 pathway and inhibiting the MAPK-JNK pathway, thereby promoting the polarization of Icam1+ macrophages toward a pro-reparative phenotype and enhancing the secretion of pro-angiogenic and osteogenic cytokines. These nanoparticles were subsequently integrated into quaternized chitosan (QCS) and tricalcium phosphate (TCP) to create a bioink for three-dimensional (3D) printing anti-infection QT/BFTO-Cur@EMM bone repair scaffolds. In vivo studies indicated that these scaffolds significantly improved the healing of infectious bone defects without causing thermal damage to surrounding tissues. This work highlights the potential of this material and the targeting of Icam1+ macrophages as an effective strategy for simultaneously controlling infection and promoting bone regeneration.
