The deterioration of postharvest fruits and vegetables caused by ethylene and microorganisms leads to global resource waste. Therefore, the development of multifunctional packaging materials that scavenge ethylene and inhibit microorganisms is essential to extend the shelf life of fruits and vegetables and minimize waste. Herein, the excellent photocatalytic performance of [email protected] nanoparticles (NPs) was incorporated into chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (SA) matrix by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly method to obtain CS/SA/ [email protected] nanocomposite films. These as-prepared films exhibited excellent antibacterial (antibacterial ratio >99%) and ethylene scavenging properties (scavenging ratio >40%) due to the synergistic effect between visible light-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the higher specific surface area of ZIF-8. The extended shelf life of kiwifruit further confirmed the enhanced preservation performance of CS/SA/ [email protected] nanocomposite films. In addition, with the addition of [email protected] NPs, the color, and transparency of the films decreased, but the mechanical strength, thermal stability, hydrophobicity, and barrier properties were improved. In summary, the successful construction of ethylene scavenging and antibacterial films provides new ideas for the innovation of environmentally adaptive and functionalization of films.

Self-warning coatings are functional materials capable of converting subtle microscopic corrosion signals into macroscopically detectable optical responses; however, the high cost of conventional fillers and the complexity of core–shell fabrication hinder their large-scale application. To address this, we developed a composite material based on self-assembled ZnO quantum dots@ZIF-8 (ZnO QDs@ZIF-8) for low-cost corrosion monitoring of bronze artifacts. The material was synthesized via ultrasound-assisted preparation of ZnO quantum dots, followed by one-step encapsulation with ZIF-8 using 2-methylimidazole, resulting in a uniform core–shell structure. This process is simple and efficient (completed within 1 h at a cost of $0.05 per gram), and the resulting composite enables highly sensitive detection of Cu2+ through a fluorescence quenching mechanism (LOD = 78 nM). When integrated into an acrylic coating, the material can convert invisible corrosion signals into visible optical changes, achieving self-warning of corrosion. This offers a scalable solution for cultural heritage preservation and holds potential for extension to industrial monitoring systems.

CA15–3 is a vital biomarker for monitoring and evaluating treatment efficacy in breast cancer patients, especially those with advanced-stage disease. Conventional immunoassays face limitations, including high cost, limited sensitivity, and dependence on potentially error-prone single-fluorescence signal outputs. To address these challenges, we designed a dual-signal-emitting sensor based on CdTe quantum dots@ZIF-8 nanomaterials, incorporating both the CRISPR/Cas12a system and catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA) technology. The binding of CA15–3 to its specific aptamer inhibits the CHA cascade reaction, thereby preventing the generation of double-stranded DNA activators necessary to initiate Cas12a-mediated trans-cleavage activity. As a result, FAM-ssDNA is extensively adsorbed onto the CdTe QDs@ZIF-8 surface, where efficient electron transfer effectively quenches its fluorescence. The incorporation of the aptamer facilitates dual-signal amplification through both the CHA and CRISPR/Cas12a systems, achieving a detection limit of 0.131 U/mL. This dual-signal output mechanism provides the system with an internal reference function, thereby significantly improving the reliability of the results. Overall, this work establishes a novel tumor biomarker detection platform that combines high sensitivity with excellent robustness.

Excessive use of tetracycline poses risks to human health and the ecological balance, which poses challenges to develop a method for facile and reliable detection of tetracycline. Herein, the MoS 2 QDs@ZIF-8 was prepared through a simple method, serving as an asynchronous response sensor for the naked-eye detection of tetracycline. The photoinduced electron transfer between the composite sensor and target tetracycline led to quench the blue fluorescence emitted by MoS 2 QDs. Hydrogen bond, chelation, π-π stacking and pore effect between the composite sensor and tetracycline made the aggregation of tetracycline, significantly enhancing the intrinsic yellow fluorescence of tetracycline. Moreover, it also exhibited good detection performance for the real samples such as river water, farm wastewater, honey and milk, demonstrating that it was suitable for naked-eye visualization detection in the field. This work provided a novel approach for constructing ratiometric fluorescence sensors with asynchronous response.

In this study, a ratiometric fluorescent sensor CdTe QDs@ZIF-8 with butterfly spectra is successfully constructed by in situ encapsulating mercaptopropionic acid-modified CdTe quantum dots in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) with a simple strategy, and used for the detection of tetracycline in fluorescence/smartphone colorimetry dual-mode. ZIF-8 not only reduces the agglomeration of the quantum dots but also surprisingly generates a new green fluorescence signal at 524 nm while the red fluorescence of the CdTe quantum dots at 650 nm quenches when tetracycline is added. The two opposing fluorescence signals create a butterfly-shaped fluorescence spectrum, allowing the sensor to detect tetracycline over a linear range of 0–70 μM with the detection limit (LOD) of 0.0155 μM by using a ratiometric fluorescence technique. What is more, based on the obvious color change of the fluorescent sensor gradually from red to green under UV light, a highly stable point-of-care testing sensor has been developed for on-site detection of tetracycline through color recognition by smartphones, which can be used for real-time detection of this antibiotic in the range of 0–1000 μM with the LOD of 0.0249 μM. This work provides a simple and efficient method for the on-site detection of tetracycline. Graphical Abstract
