The establishment of an efficient method for the analysis of drug residues in animal urine facilitates the real-time monitoring of drugs used in the production of animal-derived food. A modified QuEChERS extraction–liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) method was established for the determination of 47 banned drug and related chemical residues in livestock urine. The sample was extracted with acetonitrile by converting the acid-base environment. The sample cleanup effects of seven solid phase extraction cartridges and two EMR-Lipid products were compared, and three materials, including graphitized carboxyl multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), PSA, and C 18 , were selected as QuEChERS adsorbents from 24 materials. All analytes showed good linearity, with correlation coefficients ( R 2 ) greater than 0.9936. Low limits of quantification could be obtained, ranging from 0.2 to 5.5 ng/mL. The average recoveries at low, medium, and high spiked levels were in the range of 70.8–114.9 %, with intra-day precision ranging from 2.4 % to 11.2 % and inter-day precision ranging from 4.5 % to 16.1 %. Swine urine and bovine urine samples collected from different farms were effectively analyzed using the developed method, and metronidazole was detected in three swine urine samples.

Rationale Oil crops and products are important food materials in daily life. Pesticide residues in food could directly and indirectly endanger human health. However, the method for detecting multiple pesticides simultaneously is limited. In this study, an easy and efficient method for the simultaneous determination of 38 pesticides in oil crops and products was established and validated. Methods All samples were treated with a modified QuEChERS procedure followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS/MS) analysis. Mass spectrometry was performed in positive and negative ion electrospray ionization mode. The mobile phase consisted of 0.1% formic acid in water and 0.1% formic acid in acetonitrile. The column used was a Poroshell 120 EC-C18 and the flow rate was 0.3 mL/min. Results The method was validated so that the calibration curves for all pesticides had good linearity in the concentration range of 10–1000 μg/L with correlation coefficients (R 2 ) above 0.9945. The recovery rates were between 70.1 and 120.0%, with relative standard deviations (RSDs) (n = 6) ≤20.0%. The limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 0.5 to 10 μg/kg, limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 2.0 to 30 μg/kg, and the matrix effect (ME) ranged from −18.77 to 19.33%, respectively. Conclusions The method proved to be accurate, sensitive, and stable. It can be used for rapid screening and confirmation of 38 pesticide residues in oil crops and products which takes 10 min for sample extraction and clean-up with less requirement of solvents. This study provides a technical basis for regulatory analysis and quality supervision of foods.

The determination of carcinogenic 4(5)-methylimidazole (4-MeI) in complex matrices at trace levels is a challenge because of its higher polarity and weaker column retention capability. Here, we proposed a novel method for the quantification of 4-MeI in various foods and beverages using modified quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) extraction with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis. The evaluated QuEChERS extraction with LC-MS/MS method showed excellent linearity (1–200 μg/L, with correlation coefficient (R 2 ) > 0.999), trueness (91–113%), and precision (relative standard deviation (RSD) ≤ 12.3%), but low matrix effect (92–108%) for cola, tea, beer, coffee beverage, bread, biscuit and instant coffee. The expanded measurement uncertainty was less than 34.4% at 95% confidence level. The proposed method can be successfully applied to determine 4-MeI in 28 commercial foods and beverages purchased from local market. Therefore, we believe this method is likely to provide a potential for 4-MeI determination in practical application.

A new simple, isocratic, selective and highly sensitive method has been developed for the simultaneous separation and determination of two plant growth regulators (PGRs): 2-(1-Naphthyl)acetic acid (NAA) and 2-(Naphthalen-1-yl)acetamide (NAD). Both PGRs were extracted by modified and miniaturized ion chromatography-Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe (IC-QuEChERS) method from ten food samples. The separation and sensitive determination were carried out by using ion chromatography coupled with fluorescence and ultraviolet (IC-FLD/UV) detector. The proposed analytical and extraction methods were validated by using blank samples, fortified with a standard solution of these two PGRs at three concentration levels 5, 15 and 25 µg/kg. The method showed good linearity (r 2 ≥ 0.980), satisfactory recoveries (76.3–112) with tolerable precision having relative standard deviations less than 15.4% (RSDs, n = 3). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were also in the range of 0.08–6.6 ng/kg and 2.2–20 ng/kg, respectively.
