With the ever-increasing of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in various high technology applications, efficient recovery of REEs from liquid sources is becoming significantly important. In this work, ZIF-8 and UiO-66-NH 2 (U6N) are combined to form a 3D-agaric like core-shell structure hybrid material (U6N@ZIF-8-20), which exhibits good performance in REEs extraction. Due to the abundant adsorption sites of ZIF-8 and the excellent water stability of UiO-66-NH 2 , 3D-agaric like U6N@ZIF-8-20 showed quick adsorption rate (only 10 min to reach equilibrium), high adsorption capacity and selectivity for REEs from water compared to other reported adsorbents. Maximum adsorption capacities of U6N@ZIF-8-20 for neodymium (Nd(III)), europium (Eu(III)), gadolinium (Gd(III)) and erbium (Er(III)) achieved to 249.90, 295.28, 316.22 and 340.95 mg g -1 , respectively. U6N@ZIF-8-20 has superiority in selective adsorption of REEs from Cd(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Mn(II) and Co(II) coexistence solution. The order of adsorption capacities for REEs is in agreement with the order of their electronegativity, ionic radius and charge density. Moreover, U6N@ZIF-8-20 showed better water stability and recyclability than single MOF. Overall, MOF@MOF hybrid material has efficiency in REEs separation from solutions, and has great advantage in the application of wastewater treating.

Coal fly ash (CFA) is a typical industrial solid waste, which has recently been reported to contain rare earth elements (REEs). REEs are important materials in many industrial fields. Therefore, extracting REEs from CFA becomes a win-win strategy to both make full use of CFA and reclaim REEs. However, the stable crystalline structure of CFA is hard to break, which limits the extraction of REEs. The inter-correlation and the leaching patterns of the REEs in CFA also remain unclear. In this work, REEs were enriched by desilication, and the correlation and the influences of multiple acids of the leached REEs were investigated. It was found that desilication could increase the leachable amount of REEs from 137.37 ppm to 346.12 ppm. The light rare earth elements (LREEs) were less inter-correlated than heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) and desilication enhanced the leaching of LREEs more than that of HREEs. The ratio and type of the leaching acids both influenced the extraction of REEs from CFA: HCl and HF played important roles in the extraction from the untreated CFA while HNO 3 and HF were more decisive for the desilicated CFA. In addition, we used statistical analysis to quantificationally confirm that desilication and acids both significantly influenced the extraction of REEs. This work provides evidence for the enrichment of REEs in CFA and acid choosing when leaching REEs from CFA.

The management of rare earth elements (REEs) from mining wastewater has consistently a key issue. Our previous research has demonstrated the selective adsorption of REEs in mining wastewater by ZIF-8. Herein, one-step pyrolysis of ZIF-8 after recovering REEs from mining wastewater as a high-value product was further proposed. The resulting REEs-based magnetic nanoporous carbon materials (REEs-MPC) was utilized for the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in the removal of bisphenol A (BPA). Experimental results indicate substantial BPA removal efficiencies of 74.62 %, 83.57 %, and 70.06 % with REEs-MPC synthesized at different pyrolysis temperatures (700 °C, 800 °C, and 900 °C). The detailed characterizations reveal the REEs-MPC at 800 °C was obtained (REEs-MPC/800) exhibit prominent graphitic and defective characteristics. In addition, electrochemical analysis revealed that the REEs-MPC/800 demonstrate elevated conductivity and superior capacitive current, with Tafel slopes as high as 294 mV/dec. Functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the presence of graphitic-N and REEs-N species significantly enhance PMS activation. Finally, a neural network model constructed through machine learning techniques provided a comprehensive overview of the structure–property relationship. Overall, the proposal to synthesize a high-value product using mining wastewater has been put forward. This initiative is expected to contribute to the advancement of the green economy within the rare earth mining industry.

The traditional rare earth extraction process generates a large amount of radioactive waste or alkaline wastewater, which has become an important constraint to rare earth production in recent years. In this study, the differences in solubility between rare earth sulfates and phosphoric acid and the high selectivity of tributyl phosphate (TBP) for phosphoric acid were exploited. The preliminary separation of phosphorus from rare earths was achieved in three stages of counter-current leaching under the low liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratio of 1:1, 323 K, with 98% of P while 2% of rare earth oxide (REO) entering into the solution. Subsequently, the dissolved phosphorus was selectively extracted by TBP. In total, 81% of P was extracted by five-stage cross-flow extraction under the organic-to-aqueous (O/A) ratio of 5:1, 298 K, leaving rare earths (REEs) in the raffinate. The extraction mechanism of low-concentration phosphoric acid in this system was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies. Finally, the residual solid phase of the counter-current leaching process was leached with dilute sulfuric acid to recover the rare earths, and 97% of the REO was recovered to the solution. The whole process realizes the separation and extraction of rare earth and phosphorus resources, reduces the production of radioactive waste, and provides the possibility of green production of rare earths.

The development of clay mineral-based soil amendments has drawn significant concerns in modern agriculture . However, little attention was paid to multifunctional amendments enabling both soil remediation and nutrients sustained release. In this work, a novel montmorillonite (Mt)-based amendment (denoted as KMt-P) was developed by modifying Mt with alkali followed by decoration with phosphate, and was further applied to remediate Cd/REEs contaminated soil. The XRD pattern of KMt-P demonstrated the presence of various silicophosphate and aluminophosphate phases. 27 Al and 29 Si MAS NMR results indicated the destruction of crystal structure of Mt. FTIR and XPS analyses confirmed the formation of Si-O-P, P-O-P, and Al-O-P bonds in KMt-P, which, as we envisioned, should be conductive to the immobilization of Cd and sustained release of nutrients. The addition of KMt-P to soil (1 wt%) could effectively reduce the bioavailable Cd in soil by 91.3% within 30 days. Sustained release of multiple nutrients was also achieved: the concentration of soluble K, Si, and P increases by 15, 3, and 135 times, respectively, in comparison with the control treatment. The increased K and P contents arose from the added modifiers, and that of Si could be ascribed to the destruction of Mt crystal structure under alkali attack. Application of only 1% KMt-P could reduce the concentrations of 17 REEs in the soil by 92.01%–98.89%. In general, KMt-P has proven a promising multifunctional amendment enabling both Cd/REEs immobilization and sustained release of nutrients.

The omnipresence of rare earth elements (REEs) in the environment, driven by their extensive industrial applications and common occurrence in some weathered crusts, has raised significant concerns as emerging pollutants. Soil washing has been recognized as an effective approach to remediate REEs-contaminated soils. However, traditional washing agents frequently lead to soil acidification and salinization, adversely affecting soil microbial communities and plant growth. This study explored the use of biodegradable chelators (BCs)—specifically N,N-bis(carboxymethyl)-L-glutamic acid (GLDA), iminodisuccinic acid (ISA), and polyaspartic acid (PASP)—as alternatives for removing REEs from contaminated agricultural soils. Our findings demonstrated that the removal efficiency of REEs positively correlates with BCs concentration, liquid-to-solid ratio, and washing time, while showing a negative correlation with solution pH. Through response surface analysis, we determined the optimal parameters for the washing process, revealing that GLDA, ISA, and PASP achieved total REEs removal efficiencies of 50.8%, 40.5%, and 23.2%, respectively. Statistical analysis confirmed that the concentration of BCs was the primary factor influencing washing effectiveness. Moreover, washing with BCs significantly removed reducible REEs—those bound to iron/manganese oxides—thereby decreasing the mobility and bioavailability of REEs in soil. The reduction in bioavailable REEs significantly lowered the environmental risk associated with contaminated soil. Notably, the activity of soil enzymes improved post-washing with BCs, indicating a positive impact on soil health. This study provides valuable insights into the remediation of REEs-contaminated soils using BCs, with GLDA emerging as a particularly effective agent.

Background The quantification of rare earth elements (REEs) in barite-associated geological samples is complicated by persistent matrix effects from coexisting elements and overlapping mass spectral interferences. These analytical challenges are particularly pronounced in samples containing high concentrations of light REEs (LREEs), which induce spectral overlaps on heavy REEs (HREEs) during inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) measurements. Results A two-stage precipitation protocol achieved separation efficiencies exceeding 93.0 % for nine matrix elements (Ba, Na, Sr, etc.), while subsequent 717-type anionic resin chromatography enabled group separation of REEs. Sequential elution with methanol-nitric acid (3.40 mol/L, 7:3 v/v) and 0.20 mol/L nitric acid solutions yielded distinct recovery profiles: HREEs (Eu–Lu) showed >90.0 % recovery in the first elution phase, followed by quantitative isolation of LREEs (La, Ce, Pr) in the second phase. The method was verified by using certified reference materials (GBW07892, GBW07893), and the determination results were consistent with the certified values. The application to three natural barite-associated REE ores was also realized. Significance This methodology resolves critical limitations in REE analysis through matrix element elimination and controlled LREE/HREE fractionation. The demonstrated 90.2–106.9 % recovery range across all REEs confirms operational robustness, while successful implementation in certified materials and field samples establishes reliability for geochemical characterization. The elution sequence optimization provides a template for analyzing REEs in barite-associated ores.

Rare earth elements (REEs) as emerging soil contaminants have attracted increasing concerns. Efficient, economical, and eco-friendly soil amendments for REEs-contaminated farmland in-situ remediation are exigently needed. Herein, phosphorus-modified metakaolin (MK-P) was synthesized as a soil amendment to immobilize REEs in soil and reduce their bioaccumulation in water spinach ( Ipomoea aquatica Forssk. ). MK-P was developed by the combination of mechanochemical and thermal treatments using metakaolin and KH 2 PO 4 as raw materials. Our results indicated that the aluminum potassium phosphate and active Al–O–P sites were generated within MK-P, facilitating the immobilization of REEs and the controlled release of phosphorus. The application of 3% MK-P significantly reduced the content of available REEs in soil by 76.7%–99.2% and reduced the REE contents in the shoots (edible parts) of water spinach by 43.0%–57.3%. Correlation analysis suggested that the enhancement for REE immobilization using MK-P could be ascribed to the increase of soil pH and available P. Furthermore, the application of MK-P led to the amelioration of soil fertility, which subsequently increased plant yield by 14.8%–20.1% under MK-P treatment. These findings suggest that MK-P can be used as a promising soil amendment to minimize REE bioavailability in REEs-contaminated soil and improve soil quality.

Ion-adsorption rare earth deposits (IAREDs) are important source for rare earth elements (REEs). The transportation, accumulation, fractionation, and leaching of REEs in IAREDs are mainly controlled by the interactions between REEs and mineral geosorbents. The coexisting ions can significantly affect the mineral-REEs interactions, which, however, are not currently well studied. This work investigated the effects of sulfate (SO 4 2− ) on the adsorption of REEs on kaolinite and ferrihydrite, two typical mineral geosorbents in IAREDs with distinct surface properties. The obtained results indicate that, with increasing SO 4 2− concentration, the adsorption of REEs is hardly changed on kaolinite but remarkably enhanced on ferrihydrite. Additionally, SO 4 2− can particularly improve the adsorption of middle REEs on ferrihydrite. The in situ ATR-FTIR spectra results, coupled with 2D correlation spectroscopic analysis, indicate that the promoted adsorption of REEs by SO 4 2− on Fh is attributed to both the electrostatic attraction and the formation of Fe-REE-SO 4 ternary complexes. However, the negatively charged kaolinite can hardly adsorb SO 4 2− because of the strong electrostatic repulsion between them. Desorption experiments reveal that REEs can be more efficiently desorbed by NH 4 Cl from kaolinite than from ferrihydrite. The obtained results suggest that coexisting oxyanions have profound effects on the mineral-REEs interactions, which should be taken into consideration while exploring the transportation, accumulation, and fractionation of REEs in IARED.

With the increasing demand for rare earth elements (REEs) due to their wide application in high technology, their recovery and separation from waste sources has gradually come onto the agenda. Herein, a new kind of MIL-101-NH2 (M1N) MOF functionalized with diethanol anhydride (DGA) incorporated into a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane (DGA-M1N@PVDF) has been fabricated for the sorption of REEs from a simulated acid leaching solution of waste phosphor, which contains a large amount of REEs. FTIR, TGA, XRD, fluorescence spectra and XPS analysis were used to characterize the synthesized composite membrane. Batch tests were employed to determine the optimal sorption conditions for Y and Eu adsorbed on DGA-M1N@PVDF adsorbent, such as pH (1–5), content of M1N MOFs (0–40 wt%), contact time (10–180 min) and ion concentration (0–20 mg L−1). Maximum adsorption capacities for Y and Eu on DGA-M1N@PVDF reached 991.7 μg g−1 and 98.76 μg g−1 for trace REE solution, respectively. Moreover, a pseudo-second-order kinetic model accurately described the sorption process, and the plotted isothermal data indicated that the Langmuir model was more suitable than the Freundlich model for Y and Eu sorption with monolayer and chemical adsorption. Meanwhile, FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the Y and Eu adsorption on the DGA-M1N@PVDF composite membrane was mainly caused by the N and O atoms of the –CONH or –COOH groups coordinated with metal ions. Furthermore, after five cycles, the recovery efficiency by DGA-M1N@PVDF for REEs remains above 82% and the XRD patterns were consistent with the original sample, which implied that the DGA-M1N@PVDF membrane has preferable stability, recyclability and good efficiency in REE separation from waste phosphor solutions.

With the escalating global demand for rare earth elements (REEs), developing sustainable recovery pathways from secondary resources is imperative. Herein, a green electrochemical leaching route was developed as a roasting-free and acid-saving alternative to conventional thermochemical methods for recovering REEs from coal slime. Phase analysis revealed that the REEs were primarily hosted in carbonate/phosphate minerals. In the leaching experiment, a leaching efficiency as high as 99.3% was achieved for the representative rare earth element neodymium (Nd) after 24 h of treatment under the conditions of 1.5 V applied voltage, 0.3 mol/L H 2 SO 4 , and 2 wt% H 2 O 2 . Mechanistic investigations indicated that the applied electric field drives an in-situ electro-Fenton process by continuously regenerating Fe 2+ from inherent coal slime iron. The resulting ·OH radicals disrupt REE-bearing mineral lattices, working synergistically with protons to facilitate rapid dissolution. By transitioning from a chemical-intensive process to an efficient, electrically-driven mineral liberation strategy, this study offers a scalable, low-carbon engineering pathway for the sustainable valorization of secondary REE resources.

In previous work, we developed an H 2 SO 4 -Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 roasting and water leaching method to leach rare earth elements (REEs), niobium (Nb), and titanium (Ti) from a low-grade concentrate mixture of the Baerzhe ore deposit in China ( Ge et al., 2024 ). However, conventional chemical precipitation and fluorine-ligand extraction methods for separating REEs/Nb/Ti in the leach solution face challenges, including co-precipitation of REEs and Nb/Ti, low recovery efficiency, and significant environmental concerns. To address these issues, a novel two-step solvent extraction process for efficient separation and recovery of Nb and Ti from leach solution was proposed in this work. The quaternary ammonium salt extractant (N263-CO 3 2- ) was employed to selectively co-extract Nb and Ti from the leach solution for achieving effective separation them from REEs. The resultant Nb(OH) 5 /Ti(OH) 4 precipitates were dissolved in H 2 C 2 O 4 -H 2 SO 4 mixture for selective extraction of [NbO(C 2 O 4 ) 2 - ] using tri-n-octylamine (TOA). The extraction mechanism confirmed that N263 preferentially extracts Nb/Ti via anion exchange, with the primary contribution from N263-CO 3 2- to Nb/Ti extraction, followed by N263-SO 4 2- , while protonated TOA selectively extracts [NbO(C 2 O 4 ) 2 - ] through anion–cation association. Ultimately, the recovery efficiencies of Nb and Ti reached 96.0 % and 69.0 %, respectively, producing Nb 2 O 5 (99.6 %) and TiO 2 (99.2 %), with REEs losses < 0.5 %. This study offers a novel approach for the efficient selective separation and recovery of Nb/Ti from leach solution.
