Increased Concentration of Yb3+ and High Crystal Field Strength in RbTiOPO4:Ta Single Crystal with Optimized Growth

Ziqing Li,Pengfei Zhu,Jimin Ding,Nianjing Ji,Yang Chen,Zhenyan Wang,Xiulan Duan,Huaidong Jiang

Yb-doped inorganic crystals have attracted great attention in both basic and applied research, and the quest for suitable crystal hosts and understanding the corresponding crystal field environments are still worth studying in laser application. In this context, inclusion-free RbTiOPO4:Ta:Yb (RTP:Ta:Yb) single crystals with dimensions up to 3 × 30 × 15 mm3 were grown by top-seeded solution growth method under optimized growth conditions. The good crystalline quality of the as-grown RTP:Ta:Yb crystals were confirmed by X-ray diffraction rocking curve. The chemical compositions of the crystals were determined through electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The results showed that the Ta distribution coefficient is 0.90–1.28, and the Yb distribution coefficient is 0.13–0.37. Double doping of Ta5+ ions can effectively increase the concentration of Yb3+ ions in the RTP crystal, and the concentration of Yb3+ ion in RTP crystal can reach 1.26 × 1020 atom/cm3. The influence of Ta and Yb dopants on the electronic structures of RTP crystals was studied using high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the chemical strengths of Ti–O and P–O bonds are related to the binding energy difference. RTP:Ta:Yb crystals exhibit excellent transparent performance in the wavelength range of 0.35–4.5 μm, and the transmittance is about 83%. Photoluminescence spectra show five emission peaks of Yb3+ in crystals, and the main emission peak is located at 972 nm. Two different coordination sites for Yb3+ were observed, and their energy levels were determined in the crystal field of the RTP:Ta structure. Furthermore, the crystal field strengths of Yb3+ in different host crystals associated with their distorted coordination environments were evaluated and discussed in detail. The results demonstrate that the RTP:Ta:Yb single crystal endowed with high crystal field strength and good luminescence property is suitable for laser application.

Electronic structure and properties of RbTiOPO4:Ta crystals

Ziqing Li,Yang Chen,Pengfei Zhu,Nianjing Ji,Xiulan Duan,Huaidong Jiang

RTP crystals doped with four different Ta concentrations were grown by high-temperature solution method. Ta dopants changed the growth habit of RTP and the (100) faces were more developed than the other crystal faces. The chemical composition and electronic structure were analyzed using Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Ta elements could easily incorporate into RTP crystals from the melt due to the large distribution coefficient. As Ta content increased, the Rb 3d, Ti 2p, P 2p, O 1s XPS spectra showed a shift towards higher binding energy. The relative Ta atomic concentration in RTP:Ta crystals was calculated and it was determined that the molar ratio between Ta and Ti was higher than the nominal ratio. The thermal properties and SHG efficiency were also studied. Ta dopants decreased the transition temperature from the orthorhombic RTP phase to the cubic RTP phase and increased the decomposition temperature of the cubic RTP phase. When the Ta concentration increased to 9 mol%, the specific heat of the doped crystal was 1.5 times that of pure RTP crystal at 300 °C and SHG intensity was improved by 59% when compared with pure RTP. The results show that Ta doping is helpful for improvement of SHG efficiency and increasing resistance to laser irradiation.

Glass-confined carbon dots: transparent afterglow materials with switchable TADF and RTP

Pengwei Wang,Peixi Cong,Jiachen Chen,Huaiyuan Cao,Qi Yue,Zixiao Xue,Junji Zhang,Long Zhang,Robert S. Weatherup,Jiabin Cui,Jin He

The confined synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) in solid matrixes is a promising avenue for developing new afterglow materials. Benefiting from the advantages of the sol–gel preparation of nanoporous glass, we report transparent glass-confined CDs with tunable afterglow luminescence. Switchable thermally-activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of CDs were achieved by adjusting the sintering temperature and ion doping. Our findings reveal that with an increase in sintering temperature from 500 °C to 600 °C, the energy gap (ΔEST) of CD-nanoporous glass (NG) increased from 0.05 eV to 0.21 eV, while the lifetime increased from 329 ms to 548 ms, which is attributed to the enhanced carbonization degree of the CDs. Pb2+ doping is also shown to achieve switchable TADF and RTP of glass-confined CDs attributed to the alteration of interfacial interactions between the glass and confined CDs. This design concept introduces a new perspective for developing transparent afterglow materials for various unique phosphorescence applications.

A label-free RTP sensor based on aptamer/quantum dot nanocomposites for cytochrome c detection

Dongxia Li,Junping Guo,Liang Zhao,Guoxian Zhang,Guiqin Yan

Given the outstanding room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) of Mn–ZnS quantum dots (QDs) and the specific recognition performance of the aptamer, we built phosphorescent composites from aptamers conjugated with polyethyleneimine quantum dots (PEI-QDs) and applied them to cytochrome c (Cyt c) detection. Specifically, QDs/CBA composites were generated from the electrostatic interaction between the positively-charged PEI-QDs and the negatively-charged Cyt c binding aptamer (CBA). With the presence of Cyt c, the Cyt c can specifically bind with the QDs/CBA composites, and quench the RTP of QDs through photoinduced electron-transfer (PIET). Thereby, an optical biosensor for Cyt c detection was built, which had a detection range of 0.166–9.96 μM and a detection limit of 0.084 μM. This aptamer-mediated phosphorescent sensor with high specificity and operational simplicity can effectively avoid the interference of scattering light from complex substrates. Our findings offer a new clue for building biosensors based on QDs and aptamers.

Self-Assembled Organic Single-Crystals Embedded with Dual-Color Phosphorescent Carbon Dots for Aqueous RTP Materials

Shuai Ye,Mengting Liang,Shujian Ji,Jiaqing Guo,Fuchun Jiang,Liwei Liu,Junle Qu,Jun Song

New types of aqueous room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials have attracted significant attention due to their ability to resist quenching in aqueous and oxygen-containing environments. Herein, a novel aqueous RTP material, namely S-CDs@SA composite, is successfully prepared via a one-pot hydrothermal method, using sulfanilic acid (SA) as the precursor and cysteamine hydrochloride as the auxiliary agent to enhance the phosphorescence intensity. This material is composed of SA single crystals embedded with sulfur-doped carbon dots (S-CDs). Under 365 nm excitation, it shows blue fluorescence centered at 476 nm. After the excitation stops, strong phosphorescence appears at 586 nm along with a weak shoulder peak at 495 nm. The composite achieves a phosphorescence quantum yield of 9% with an afterglow lifetime of 827.5 ms, and its luminescence remains stable in aqueous environments. Notably, the phosphorescence color of the material shifts from yellow to green at both low (77 K) and high (388 K) temperatures, while the addition of a small amount of water can suppress the thermochromic effect at high temperatures. Owing to these unique phosphorescent characteristics, S-CDs@SA exhibits considerable potential for application in advanced information encryption technologies.

Large-scale preparation for efficient polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescence via click chemistry

R. Tian,S.-M. Xu,Q. Xu,C. Lu

To achieve efficient polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials, covalently embedding phosphors into the polymer matrix appeared as the most appealing approach. However, it is still highly challenging to fabricate RTP materials on a large scale because of the inefficient binding engineering and time-consuming covalent reactions. Here, we have proposed a scalable preparation approach for RTP materials by the facile B─O click reaction between boronic acid–modified phosphors and polyhydroxy polymer matrix. The ab initio molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that the phosphors were effectively immobilized, resulting in the suppressed nonradiative transitions and activated RTP emission. In comparison to the reported covalent binding time of several hours, such a B─O click reaction can be accomplished within 20 s under ambient environment. The developed strategy simplified the construction of polymer-based RTP polymeric materials by the introduction of facile click chemistry. Our success provides inspirations and possibilities for the scale-up production of RTP materials.

Ultralong-Lived and Color-Tunable RTP in Biodegradable Natural Fibers Based Textiles for Wearable Security and Display

Huie Jiang,Lin Yang,Haiyan Ju,Lanxue Zou,Tianqi Zhao,Peng Guo,Qian Zhang,Haijiao Xie,Xinhua Liu

Room-temperature phosphorescent (RTP) materials have great prospects in the next-generation optoelectronic applications. However, developing safe, color-adjustable, ultra-long-lasting and eco-friendly RTP materials remains challenging. In this study, natural collagen (Col) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were co-integrated through wet spinning technology, combined with aromatic amine phosphors, to construct biodegradable RTP fibers (Col/PVA/T, Col/PVA/B, Col/PVA/A). Through the hydrogen bond network between polymers and phosphorescent molecules, combined with the self-reinforcing rigid structure of the mixed matrix, Col/PVA/T fibers are endowed with outstanding RTP properties: phosphorescent lifetime up to 1.89 seconds, afterglow duration exceeding 14 seconds. The modular design strategy achieves adjustable multi-color emission (green/blue/yellow) by selecting phosphors. As inherently biocompatible and biodegradable materials, these fibers possess outstanding mechanical flexibility and textile compatibility, enabling the production of smart fabrics with excellent moisture permeability (1902 g m −2 24 h −1 ) and air permeability (368 mL cm −2 h −1 ). This research further demonstrates their transformative potential in anti-counterfeiting systems with time-resolved encryption capabilities and dynamic wearable displays. This work not only sets a new paradigm for eco-friendly luminescent textiles, but also Bridges the gap between sustainable materials and advanced photonic applications in personal safety and human-machine interfaces.

Deep Learning-Assisted RTP Sensor Array Based on a Melt-Injection Reaction for Visual Discrimination of Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics

Wang Xiaozhen,Xuan Yutong,Yun Peng,Fu Zhibin,Chen Fuzun,Zhang Shudong,Zhu Xiaobo,Wang Zhenguang

The widespread residue and structural similarity of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs) pose a critical requirement for analytical methods capable of both sensitive detection and accurate discrimination of FQ subtypes. Herein, we report a deep learning-assisted room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) sensor array for FQs constructed via a simple melt-injection reaction. By incorporation of FQ subtypes into a urea–formaldehyde (UF) matrix, composites (UF@FQs) exhibiting tunable, ultralong RTP emission were produced. Photophysical studies reveal that the UF matrix provides a rigid protective environment that suppresses nonradiative decay and activates the weak phosphorescence of FQs through confinement and hydrogen-bonding interactions. This matrix not only amplifies the afterglow intensity but also prolongs the emission lifetime, generating fingerprint-like optical responses for the FQ subtypes. Leveraging these cross-reactive signals, we fabricated a sensor array to discriminate four different FQs and their mixtures. The array was further integrated with a deep learning model capable of visually discriminating FQs directly from afterglow images. The platform demonstrates excellent selectivity against common interferents and achieves satisfactory recovery in meat samples. This work presents a straightforward strategy for transforming nonemissive analytes into bright afterglow signatures, offering a powerful tool for on-site, high-throughput, and intelligent discrimination of antibiotics.

Confinement and heating promoted RTP of flumequine, oxolinic acid and levofloxacin on papers for their detection and discrimination

Yulu Wang,Yu-e Shi,Song Shen,Zhenguang Wang

Developing simple assays to identify and discriminate quinolones are highly desired for food safety, which remain a great challenge due to the interferences from food matrices and the minor variation on the molecular structure of massive quinolones. We proposed a room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) assay for the quantitative detection and discrimination of quinolones, aided by a confinement and heating strategy. Quinolones were loaded into the porous framework of paper, which provided confinement effects on the molecular motions of quinolones. The heating process further removed the solvents, eliminating their quenching effects on excitons. These synergistic effects improved the RTP intensity and emission lifetime by 1144-fold and from nanoseconds to seconds, respectively. Three types of quinolones were quantitatively detected and discriminated through pattern recognition methods. The proposed assay showed excellent detection performance in complicated meat samples, aided by the delayed signal collecting of RTP. The reported results provided a clue to modulate the RTP properties of organic molecules, showing great potential for application prospect in food safety analysis, environmental and healthy monitoring.

Ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence materials based on sodium carboxymethyl cellulose: Enhanced phosphorescence performance via third-component regulation and large-area flexible fabrication

Tianyu Li,Shaochen Sun,Yutong Zhou,Zhihui Wang,Xinxin Wang,Shuya Yang,Farong Tao,Liping Wang,Guang Li

Polymer-based room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials hold great promise for a wide range of applications. However, the development of ultralong natural polymer-based RTP materials, especially those with flexibility, still remains a formidable challenge. In this work, a series of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na)-based RTP materials are facilely constructed by doping different amounts of 4-carboxyphenylboronic acid (CPBA) into CMC-Na matrices. Interestingly, adding boric acid (BA) as a third-component to the CMC-Na/CPBA system leads to the formation of a tighter intermolecular hydrogen bonding network, significantly enhancing their RTP performance. The longest phosphorescence lifetime of CMC-Na/CPBA/BA increases from 528 ms to 1154 ms, accompanied by a bright blue afterglow extending from 5 s to 10 s. Both CMC-Na/CPBA and CMC-Na/CPBA/BA exhibit RTP emission switching reversibility under alternating treatments of water vapor fumigation and heating. More importantly, transparent and flexible RTP films are prepared by incorporating a small amount of polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a regulator into CMC-Na/CPBA/BA, and can be easily fabricated over large areas using a simple coating-drying method. Furthermore, the prepared CMC-Na-based RTP materials demonstrate potential for applications in information encryption. This study provides an effective strategy for enhancing RTP performance and enabling large-area preparation of flexible natural polymer-based RTP films.

Chitosan-cucurbit[5]uril supramolecular gel-induced room-temperature phosphorescence: A doxorubicin-responsive RTP probe based on PRET mechanism

Jin-Xian Luo,Qing Fan,Qing Tang,Zhu Tao,Ying Huang

A supramolecular gel was constructed based on chitosan (CS) and cucurbit[5]uril (Q[5]) through self-assembly via hydrogen bonds and ion-dipole interactions. This gel possesses a dense three-dimensional network structure that provides a rigid microenvironment for encapsulating 6-bromo-2-methylquinoline (6-Br-2-MQ), successfully inducing room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) emission at 511 nm with a phosphorescence lifetime of 1.537 ms and a quantum yield of 6.72%. Mechanistic studies indicate that the RTP emission originates from the synergistic effects of the rigid gel matrix, host-guest interactions at the Q[5], and the bromine-induced heavy-atom effect. The RTP system exhibits reversible temperature-responsive “on-off” behavior. Furthermore, based on a resonance energy transfer mechanism, the system serves as a phosphorescence probe for the detection of doxorubicin (DOX) in complex biological matrices with a detection limit of 0.65 μM, utilizing a PRET-based dynamic quenching mechanism. The probe shows good recovery (96.08–100.75%) and high anti-interference capability in artificial urine samples. This study provides a new strategy for developing RTP materials using naturally derived and biocompatible components, and demonstrates their potential as a simple, cost-effective platform for point-of-care biosensing applications in complex biological fluids.

Calcination temperature tuning of RTP and TADF with wide range of emission color from carbon dots confined in Al2O3

Jinkun Liu,Yimeng Luo,Zhun Ran,Fenglin Wang,Minhua Sun,Yangyang Luo,Jianle Zhuang,Xuejie Zhang,Bingfu Lei,Yingliang Liu,Chaofan Hu

The room temperature afterglow (RTA) of carbon dots (CDs) and their wide-ranging application prospects have attracted significant attention. However, most of the synthesis and regulation methods for multicolor CDs-based RTA materials are complex. Therefore, it is still a challenge to obtain a series of CDs-based RTA materials with broad and tunable emission wavelengths via a simple preparation method using the same organic precursor and matrix. In this study, a series of CDs@Al 2 O 3 materials with ultra-broad afterglow emission range (376 ∼ 619 nm) were prepared by regulating the reaction temperature through a one-step calcination method. High-temperature consumption led to a decrease of surface functional groups and conjugation size of CDs, resulting in the gradually blue-shifted emission from red to UV region. We also discovered a unique phenomenon where the afterglow emission mode of the material shifted from room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) to thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) as the temperature increased, attributed to the stabilization of the excited triplet state from the strengthened crystallinity of Al 2 O 3 matrix. Furthermore, a continuous emission at ∼ 471 nm attributed to the oxygen defects of the matrix was observed. Multiple anti-counterfeiting, information encryption, and fingerprint detection are demonstrated based on the unique RTA properties of CDs@Al 2 O 3 .
