Sb3+ with stereochemically active lone pair 5s2 electrons is overwhelming in the doping engineering of the luminescent metal halides, and it usually leads to extrinsic self-trapped excitons (STEs) with tunable emissions. However, the photoluminescence enhancement mechanism of Sb3+ doped metal halides compared to the pristine host remains unclear. Herein, we doped Sb3+ into all-inorganic non-emissive Rb4CdCl6, realizing bright green emission peaking at 525 nm with a photoluminescence quantum yield of 70.2%. A comparison of Raman spectra, as well as the Debye temperature, was utilized to elucidate the STEs mechanism, verifying that the doping of Sb3+ softens the structural lattice. Thus, strong electron–phonon interactions enable highly efficient photoluminescence originating from STEs emission in Rb4CdCl6:Sb3+. This work demonstrates solid evidence that the efficient emissions of metal halides can be triggered by Sb3+ doping, and the design principle involved will guide the future studies for emerging luminescence material exploration.

Low-dimensional lead-free metal halide perovskites have garnered significant attention due to their potential applications in nondestructive testing. However, achieving scintillators that facilitate efficient X-ray imaging remains a major challenge, primarily due to the inherent difficulty of low concentration in deep traps. Here, a novel design strategy is introduced that modulates A-site element occupancy, thereby fine-tuning the electronic structures and photophysical properties of perovskites. We present a novel zero-dimensional halide perovskite Rb 4 CdCl 6 :Mn 2+ , A + (where A + represents Li + , Na + , K + , Ag + ). The trap-regulated generation of additional Cl vacancies significantly enhances the afterglow performance, thereby enabling its applications in high-temperature X-ray imaging, and thermally stimulated imaging. Notably, Na + -doped Rb 4 CdCl 6 :Mn 2+ exhibits optimal trap distribution and superior thermally quenched-resistant radioluminescence, with a light yield 1.4 times higher at 493 K compared to room temperature. Moreover, the prepared film exhibits a detection limit as low as 63.5 nGy s −1 in high-temperature environments, along with a spatial resolution exceeding 20 lp mm −1 . Upon cessation of irradiation, intense X-ray persistent luminescence emission (X-PersL) is triggered under thermal stimulation, realizing delayed imaging, which can be attributed to charge carrier compensation and redistribution mechanisms. This work proposes an innovative design strategy for high-efficiency perovskite scintillators, expanding their applications in advanced X-ray detection.

The impact of magnetic coupling effects on the luminescence of 0D (zero-dimensional) perovskite materials doped with TM (transition metal) ions remains underexplored. This study synthesizes Mn 2+ -doped 0D Rb 4 CdCl 6 halide structures using a solvent-based method, with Rb + ions systematically arranged around isolated [CdCl 6 ] 4− octahedra. The resulting Rb 4 Cd 1- x Mn x Cl 6 powder exhibits stable orange-red luminescence under UV (ultraviolet) excitation, achieving a PLQY (photoluminescence quantum yield) of 88.96%. The parent Rb 4 CdCl 6 is non-luminescent, but doping with Mn 2+ induces strong luminescence due to combined emissions from d-d transitions of Mn 2+ , weakly ferromagnetically coupled Mn 2+ pairs, and STEs (self-trapped excitons). Characterization via XRD (X-ray diffraction) and DFT (density functional theory) reveals that Mn 2+ doping occurs through both substitutional and interstitial processes, facilitating magnetic coupling. Raman spectroscopy identifies strong electron-phonon coupling at a phonon mode of 112 cm −1 , supporting STEs generation. Magnetic property analysis shows significant ferromagnetic coupling between Mn 2+ pairs and paramagnetic single Mn 2+ ions, enhancing luminescence. The material demonstrates remarkable structural and thermal stability, positioning Rb 4 Cd 1- x Mn x Cl 6 as a promising candidate for optoelectronic applications.

It is of great interest to obtain multiple luminescent products from a single reaction, such as existing core–shell nanomaterials and heterojunction nanomaterials, all with the aim of enriching the photoelectric properties of the materials. Here, we report a hydrothermal approach for creating crystals of needle-shaped RbCdCl3:Sb3+ and bulk-shaped Rb4CdCl6:Sb3+, two antimony doped-cadmium based metal halides. Two crystal materials with different shapes and phases can be synthesized simultaneously at the same stoichiometric ratio. RbCdCl3:Sb3+ is needle-shaped, whereas Rb4CdCl6:Sb3+ is bulk-shaped. Under 320 nm excitation wavelength irradiation, blue emission (490 nm) of Rb4CdCl6:Sb3+ and yellow emission (560 nm) of RbCdCl3:Sb3+ can be attained. Interestingly at low temperatures RbCdCl3:Sb3+ shows double peaked emissions (460 and 560 nm). This study investigates Sb3+-doped RbCdCl3 crystals that exhibit double luminescence as a result of intrinsic host self-trapped excitons and extrinsic dopant-induced self-trapped excitons (STEs), which are referred to as host STEs and Sb3+ dopant STEs, respectively. The construction of multicolor light-emitting devices is made possible by their color kinetics characteristics.
