Topology-Regulated Pesticide Retention on Plant Leaves through Concave Janus Carriers

Kefei Zhao,Jun Hu,Yue Ma,Tianyue Wu,Yuxia Gao,Fengpei Du

Retention, a crucial process in pesticide application, is heavily affected by the extremely low surface energy and micro/nanostructure of plant leaves. The inadequate retention like bouncing, splashing, and drifting often give rise to severe soil and groundwater pollution. In this article, we present an unprecedented topology-regulation approach that significantly contributes to this issue. A series of pesticide-loaded “hat”-shaped Janus carriers (HJCs) are synthesized via emulsion interfacial polymerization and characterized by scanning electron microscope, thermogravimetric analyzer, energy-dispersive spectrometer, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Upon spraying on plant leaves, the pesticide-loaded HJCs can embed with the micropapillae and nanosplinters on leaves driven by the “hanger-hat” topology effect, consequently leading to the enhanced retention evaluated by the deposition and flush resistance experiments. Moreover, the release behavior of pesticide-loaded HJCs is found to match the Ritger-Peppas model and finally achieves sustained release. Additionally, the generality of the HJCs synthetic strategy is also studied and applicable to multiple pesticides. This study not only provides a new strategy for increasing pesticide retention on plant leaves but also opens a promising aspect for the applications of Janus carriers in agriculture.

Novel self-assembled micelles of dual-modified dextrin with pH responsiveness via grafted octenyl succinic anhydride and cysteamine for curcumin delivery

Shen Long,Meng-Jie Yu,Ran Feng,Han Tao,Bao Zhang

In this study, a novel dextrin-based micelle (OSAD-SH), dual-modified with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) and cysteamine, has been developed to address the acid instability issues of micelles modified only by OSA and designed for curcumin delivery. The chemical structure of OSAD-SH was characterized and the physical properties of the micelles were evaluated. Results displayed that OSAD-SH micelles exhibit strong self-assembly properties, appearing as spheres with diameters ranging from 92.41 to 194.20 nm. Blank micelles with good dilution resistance, acid, thermal, and ionic strength stability. The curcumin encapsulated by the micelles is in an amorphous state. In vitro release experiments demonstrated that curcumin released from OSAD-SH micelles exhibits intestinal targeting. The Ritger-Peppas model effectively predicted the release behavior of curcumin, indicating that the release mechanism follows super case-II transport. The OSAD-SH micelle could be a promising nanocarrier for improving the physicochemical properties of curcumin in food fields.

Molecularly imprinted polymer nanocarriers for recognition and sustained release of diclofenac

Lei Zheng,Hui Wang,Xiaomin Cheng

In this study, a series of imprinted poly(methacrylic acid- co -ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) nanocarriers for diclofenac and corresponding nonimprinted polymer nanocarriers have been synthesized in 4 different types of solvents by precipitation polymerization. The products were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller measurement. Results showed that uniformly sized molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) nanospheres with relatively good porosity could only be obtained in acetonitrile. The effects of solvents on the recognition and release properties of polymer particles were also carefully investigated. The binding experiments indicated that MIPs prepared in acetonitrile displayed much higher binding capacity than other MIPs with a maximum binding capacity of 65.18 mg g −1 . The Scatchard analysis showed that synthetic MIPs have special recognition sites for diclofenac, while nonimprinted polymers have not. The Sips model could provide a best fit to the equilibrium data of nanocarriers over whole concentrations. The experimental data of an adsorption kinetic study were well fitted to the pseudo–second-order kinetic model, indicating the chemisorption mechanism between diclofenac and MIPs in the process of adsorption. The drug release of diclofenac from MIPs could well be described by the Ritger-Peppas model, suggesting a non-Fickian diffusion mechanism. In addition, we successfully used MIPs to extract diclofenac at low levels from fetal bovine serum.

Fabrication and characterization of TPP-β-cyclodextrin/chitosan supramolecular nanoparticles for delivery dual bioactive compounds

Yong Hu,Guojing Mo,Ying Wang,Juan Guo,Chao Huang

The TPP-β-cyclodextrin/chitosan (TPP-β-CD/CS) nanoparticles loading with curcumin (Cur) and vitamin C (Vc) was prepared via controllable self-assembly. The cross-linking reaction between TPP-β-CD and CS, and co-encapsulation of Cur and Vc in TPP-β-CD/CS nanoparticles were confirmed by the fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), UV–Vis (UV), X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscope (AFM), and particle size analyzer. The results of stability and antioxidant activity indicated that co-encapsulation not only enhanced the chemical stability of Cur and Vc, but also improved antioxidant properties compared with the active ingredients used alone. Release kinetic fitted by Ritger–Peppas model revealed that the release of dual active ingredients were mainly dominated by Fickian diffusion in pH 1.2, while followed non-Fickian or anomalous diffusion in pH 7.4. Furthermore, the two-dimensional UV correlation spectroscopy (2D-UV-COS) confirmed that the release rate of Cur was faster than that of Vc during co-delivery, which helps to precisely elucidate the synergistic nutraceuticals effect of each active ingredient.

pH-Sensitive Degradable Poly(ortho ester)-Polyesters As Injectable Viscous Fluid for Long-Acting Rheumatoid Arthritis Treatment

Zhicheng Liao,Cheng Zheng,Liyan Qiu

This study focuses on the development and evaluation of injectable drug delivery systems for the long-acting treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Four types of poly(ortho ester)-polyesters (POC2, POC3, POL2, and POL3) were synthesized by the polycondensation reactions between an ortho ester diamine monomer and the active esters of oligocaprolactone diols (A-OCL) or oligolactide diols (A-OLA) with different molecular weights and exhibited discrepant zero-shearing viscosities and hydrophilic–hydrophobic properties. The degradation behaviors were collectively controlled by surface erosion and bulk degradation mechanisms, and the accelerated degradation at pH 5.0 was observed due to acid-responsive hydrolysis of ortho ester and ester groups. Consequently, the release of indomethacin (IND) was well sustained with the kinetics fitting of the Ritger–Peppas model. After being injected subcutaneously once into adjuvant-induced arthritis rats, the formulation IND-POC2 slowly released IND for up to 14 days and showed the best therapeutic effects on effectively alleviating the swelling of joints, bone erosion, and the expression of pro-inflammatory factors. To sum up, this research demonstrated the cheerful prospect of the obtained functional viscous poly(ortho ester)-polyester fluid for sustained drug release in rheumatoid arthritis disease.

Preparation and characterization of 3s-PLA/CS/nHA drug-loaded composites by supercritical carbon dioxide technology

Yang Guoqian,Liu Mengmeng,Su Yingfeng,Yu Chi

Amidst the relentless innovation in materials science and bone tissue engineering, the quest for next-generation bone graft materials with bespoke functionalities has emerged as a pivotal research domain. This study produced and characterized a novel bone healing material. First, we explained how three-armed polylactic acid (3s-PLA) was created in supercritical carbon dioxide (ScCO 2 ) and utilized as a matrix material. Following that, we described how the solution blending approach was employed to create three-armed polylactic acid/chitosan/nanohydroxyapatite (3s-PLA/CS/nHA) composites. The composites were then drug-loaded with prednisone acetate as a model drug utilizing the supercritical impregnation technique. Ultimately, the Ritger-Peppas model was substantially followed by the drug release of the drug-loaded composites when the in vitro drug-release kinetics of the drug-loaded materials were investigated. The porous structure of 3s-PLA was demonstrated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) hydrogen spectroscopy. Morphologic studies using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the homogeneous distribution of drug in the matrix of the mixtures as well as the porous structure of 3s-PLA and 3s-PLA/CS/nHA. The hydrophilicity of 3s-PLA/CS/nHA was examined by the use of water contact angle (WCA), revealing that the material in question has a hydrophilic water contact angle of 45.69°. Furthermore, research was conducted using one-way tests and investigations to characterize in vitro drug-release carrier materials under various drug conditions and temperatures. The carrier material consistently released up to 84.8% of prednisone acetate over the course of 72 h, demonstrating good control over prolonged release, according to the results. Graphical abstract

Insight into succinylated modified soy protein isolate-sodium alginate emulsion gels: Structural properties, interactions and quercetin release behavior

Sai Yang,Ziteng Lian,Lin Cheng,Xiuying Liu,Shicheng Dai,Xiaohong Tong,Huan Wang,Lianzhou Jiang

In this study, the emulsion gel system was constructed by succinylated SPI (SSPI) emulsion together with sodium alginate (Alg). The aim was to evaluate the influence of succinylation and Alg concentration (0 %, 1 %, 1.5 %, 2 %, 2.5 %, w/v) on the emulsion gel structure and formation mechanism, the encapsulation efficiency, release behavior, and digestion properties of quercetin . The succinylation modification and the increase in Alg concentration improved the textural properties of the emulsion gels and SSPI-2 % showed the optimum water-holding capacity (91.37 %). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy , intermolecular forces, and X-ray diffraction indicated the formation of the gel network dominated by electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bond stabilization, with a decrease in the crystal size and disruption of the molecular rigidity structure. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance, rheology, and microstructures showed the improvement of the moisture distribution of the gels and the formation of denser and more homogeneous. The quercetin delivery properties of SSPI emulsion gels were enhanced compared to SPI emulsion gels. The encapsulation rate of quercetin was further enhanced with increasing Alg concentration, and the optimum was reached at SSPI-2 % (96.40 %). The Ritger-Peppas model describes quercetin from SPI and SSPI gels regulated by different release kinetics in gastrointestinal fluids with a favorable sustained release effect. In addition, SSPI-2 % exhibited the highest quercetin bioaccessibility (74.54 %) and chemical stability (66.81 %). This research provides novel perspectives to explore the development of innovative emulsion gels and transport systems for bioactive.
