Enhanced lignin-first valorization of biomass for producing monophenols over Ru/C cooperated with H2WO4

Ziyu Jia,Jun Hu,Ping Lu,Yahui Sun,Yunjun Wang

Herein, using Ru/C and H 2 WO 4 as the catalysts, native lignin in biomass was efficiently depolymerized into monophenols following the lignin-first strategy at mild conditions. Upon the co-presence of Ru/C and H 2 WO 4 , birch lignin afforded monophenols in 40.4 wt% yield at 200 °C, which was 2.5 times that upon Ru/C and 7.5 times that upon H 2 WO 4 . 4-Propylsyringol and 4-propylguaiacol were two major products with a combined selectivity of 73%. 2D HSQC NMR of liquid product reveals that β-O-4 bonds in the soluble lignin fragments had been thoroughly disrupted. H 2 WO 4 dissolving at high temperatures promoted the solvolysis of lignin from the biomass matrix, and Ru/C enhanced the following reductive depolymerization. The solid catalysts can be readily recovered for reuse at room temperature after the hydrolysis of carbohydrates, and the catalysts exhibited high activity after four recycles.

Boric Acid as a Novel Homogeneous Catalyst Coupled with Ru/C for Hydrodeoxygenation of Phenolic Compounds and Raw Lignin Oil

Bowen Luo,Rongxuan Li,Riyang Shu,Chao Wang,Jingtao Zhang,Ying Chen

Simple and efficient catalytic routes have been explored to upgrade the raw lignin oil. Though homogeneous catalysis is easy to operate and possesses a high reaction rate, it also suffers from the difficulty of product separation. In this work, we used H3BO3 as a novel homogeneous catalyst coupled with Ru/C to overcome the separation problem and carry out the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of phenolic compounds and raw lignin oil. H3BO3 showed an outstanding performance over the liquid organic and mineral acids, with a good catalyst recyclability. Phenolic model compounds including monomers and dimers can be efficiently converted into cycloalkanes with yields close to 100%. Moreover, the raw lignin oil also had a good HDO result by using this bifunctional catalyst (H3BO3 and Ru/C). The content of hydrocarbons increased from 7.9% to 93.1% at 260 °C, which promoted the upgraded lignin oil capable to be used as fuel directly.

Bimetallic Rex-Ru/C catalyst for fatty acid esters to diesel-range alkanes under low temperature

Jiaping Zhao,Xincheng Cao,Peng Liu,Feng Long,Shiyu Wu,Junming Xu,Jianchun Jiang

The hydrogenation of bio-based oil into biodiesel is a key strategy in reducing reliance on fossil fuels. However, efficient catalysts are needed to enable low-temperature hydrogenation reactions due to the current high-temperature requirement for bio-based oil hydrogenation. Here, bimetallic catalysts Rex-Ru/C for low-temperature hydrogenation of bio-based oils were prepared. The presence of Re oxides (ReOx) in the catalyst enhances the abundance of weak and medium acid sites, thereby facilitating the adsorption of H2. The DFT calculation shows the introduction of Re also improved the adsorption capacity of the catalyst for fatty acid methyl ester and H2. The Re0.25-Ru/C catalyst exhibits superior conversion, selectivity, and recyclability at low temperatures compared to the previously reported catalysts, achieving 100% conversion of methyl stearate with 100% selectivity toward n-heptadecane (C17) and n-octadecane (C18) (reaction conditions: 150°C, 4 h, 2.5 MPa H2). Moreover, the catalyst also shows excellent hydrogenation activity toward various fatty acids or esters, including methyl palmitate, stearic acid, and palmitate at low temperatures. The Re0.25-Ru/C catalyst showed consistent recycling performance over 9 cycles. The decline in catalytic performance of the catalyst was primarily caused by a reduction in ReOx content, resulting in a decrease in acid site concentration. Consequently, there was reduced adsorption of H2 and oil on the catalyst.

Zirconium phosphate combined with Ru/C as a highly efficient catalyst for the direct transformation of cellulose to C6 alditols

Yuhe Liao,Qiying Liu,Tiejun Wang,Jinxing Long,Longlong Ma,Qi Zhang

The selective transformation of cellulose to C6 alditols provides a feasible route towards the sustainable synthesis of chemicals and fuels. Herein, the catalytic performance of amorphous zirconium phosphate (ZPA) combined with 5 wt% Ru/C was evaluated in the direct conversion of cellulose to C6 alditols (sorbitol and mannitol) under hydrothermal conditions. The yield of C6 alditols reached 63.5% and 85.5% with microcrystalline cellulose and ball-milled cellulose as the feedstock, respectively. This hybrid catalyst was developed to convert concentrated cellulose to obtain C6 alditols with a high concentration of 68.8 mg mL−1 in the final products. The high yield of C6 alditols from cellulose was ascribed to the fact that ZPA favoured the adsorption of cellulose and promoted its depolymerization to cellobiose and glucose, which was hydrogenated immediately to C6 alditols over Ru/C. The weak adsorption of C6 alditols over ZPA inhibited the dehydration of C6 alditols to sorbitan. Furthermore, ZPA exhibited excellent hydrothermal stability and could be reused for several runs.

Roles of Copper in Nitrate Reduction at Copper-Modified Ru/C Catalysts

Jia-Qi Chen,Xu-Xu Ye,Da Zhou,Yan-Xia Chen

Electrochemical reduction is a potential solution to eliminate nitrate in wastewater; however, the poor activity and product selectivity of traditional electrocatalysts impede its large-scale application. Herein, we report a new catalyst of Cu-modified Ru nanoparticles (Cu-modified Ru/C NPs) prepared by underpotential deposition (UPD) of Cu atoms onto Ru NPs, which shows good nitrate reduction kinetics and NH3 selectivity. To unravel the enhancing mechanism, the impact of Cu coverage on nitrate reduction and the formation of possible products/intermediates as well as the competition of side products H2 have been investigated systematically by tracking the reverse oxidation of such species using rotation ring disk electrode (RRDE) combined with cyclic voltammetry. Our results reveal that the Cu-modified Ru/C NPs perform NH3 yield of 23.7 μmol h–1 cm–2 and 95% Faradaic efficiency, which is better than Ru/C NPs (6.0 μmol h–1 cm–2 with Faradaic efficiency of 66%); This enhancement of modified Cu atoms toward nitrate reduction results from synergetic effects: (i) Cu blocks the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) sites on Ru surface; (ii) Cu accelerates the rate of nitrate reduction to nitrite; (iii) the enhanced nitrite reduction activity of Cu sites on Ru substrate is probably a result of changes in electronic structure of Cu.

The effect of Ru/C and MgCl2 on the cleavage of inter- and intra-molecular linkages during cornstalk hydrolysis residue valorization

Lv Wei,Liao Yuhe,Zhu Yuting,Liu Jing,Zhu Changhui,Wang Chenguang,Xu Ying,Zhang Qi,Chen Guanyi,Ma Longlong

The cleavage of linkages of lignocellulose is important for its valorization. The linkage cleavage of cornstalk hydrolysis residue was investigated over catalysts (Ru/C + MgCl 2 ) in EtOAc/H 2 O solvents. The results show that almost hydrogen bonds, C–C bonds, ether and ester bonds in the matrix of lignin and cellulose were broken, accompanying 80.6% of lignin and 98.5% of cellulose conversion, and obtaining 37.5% of aromatic monomers and 28.8% of lignin oligomers. In the reaction system, biphasic EtOAc/H 2 O solvents exhibited an effect on cleaving the intermolecular linkages between lignin and cellulose. MgCl 2 showed limited abilities of breaking the α-O-4 and β-O-4 linkages in lignin and limited β-1, 4-glycosidic and hydrogen bonds in cellulose were cleaved over Ru/C catalyst. The cleavage of C–O linkages (α-O-4, β-O-4, 4-O-5) and C–C bonds (α-β, β-5) in lignin were mainly dependent on Ru/C catalyst. Much C–O and the stubborn C–C linkages of β-5, β-1 and 5-5 were significantly disrupted by the synergistic effect between MgCl 2 and Ru/C. However, MgCl 2 exhibited great contribution to breakage of β-1, 4-glycosidic linkage, hydrogen bonds and sugar ring of cellulose. The linkage of β-1, 4-glycosidic, hydrogen bonds and C–C in C5/C6 sugars were significantly broken. The increased yield of products was evidently due to the synergistic effect of Ru/C combined with MgCl 2 .

Superior hydrogen generation from sodium borohydride hydrolysis catalyzed by the bimetallic Co–Ru/C nanocomposite

Wenkai Huang,Fuhua Xu,Xiang Liu

Sodium borohydride has been widely regarded as a promising hydrogen carrier owing to its greatly hydrogen storing capability (10.8 wt%), high weight density and excellent stability in alkaline solutions. Herein, we first design and synthesize a series of bimetallic M-Ru/C nanocomposites (including Fe–Ru/C, Co–Ru/C, Ni–Ru/C and Cu–Ru/C), via simply alloying of commercial Ru/C with nonprecious metal, for superior H 2 evolution from the NaBH 4 hydrolysis. The result exhibits that H 2 generation is synergetically improved by alloying Ru/C with Co or Ni, while it is hindered by alloying Ru/C with Fe or Cu. Indeed, Co–Ru/C presents the highest efficient catalytic activity for H 2 generation, with the TOF of 117.69 mol(H 2 )·mol Ru −1 ·min −1 , whereas Ru/C is only 57.08 mol(H 2 )·mol Ru −1 ·min −1 . In addition, the TOF of Co–Ru/C reaches to 436.51 mol(H 2 )·mol Ru −1 ·min −1 (96.7 L(H 2 )·g Ru −1 ·min −1 ) in the presence of NaOH.

The reaction kinetics and mechanism of catalytic decomposition of hydrazine nitrate on Ru/C catalyst in nitric acid solutions

Baole Li,Tiansheng He,Chen Zuo,Zhi Cao,Taihong Yan,Weifang Zheng

Catalytic decomposition of hydrazine nitrate is a very important research topic in the environmental protection field. Herein, we used an Ru/C catalyst for the decomposition of hydrazine nitrate in HNO3, and the reaction kinetics and mechanism were studied in detail. The kinetics study of the decomposition of hydrazine nitrate (0.01 M) was conducted in the temperature range 313–343 K in 0.1 M HNO3 in the presence of Ru/C. The apparent activation energy for this reaction was 46.6 kJ mol−1 according to a fitting of the experimental data, while the reaction order was 1.5. It was also found that the reaction pathway of the catalytic decomposition of hydrazine nitrate on the Ru/C catalyst involved two processes: heterogeneous catalytic disproportionation of hydrazine nitrate at the catalyst surface and oxidation of hydrazine nitrate with catalytically generated HNO2.

Synergistic Effect of EtOAc/H2O Biphasic Solvent and Ru/C Catalyst for Cornstalk Hydrolysis Residue Depolymerization

Wei Lv,Zhan Si,Zhipeng Tian,Chenguang Wang,Qi Zhang,Ying Xu,Tiejun Wang,Longlong Ma

An EtOAc/H2O biphasic solvent–Ru/C coupling biorefinery process was developed to selectively produce aromatics from cornstalk hydrolysis residue (CHR). In this process, CHR was depolymerized in an ethyl acetate (EtOAc)/H2O biphasic solvent system over Ru/C catalyst, which produced aromatics and carbohydrates instantly separated by EtOAc and H2O. Most lignin in CHR was converted to aromatics and nonvolatile fractions, accompanied with partial degradation of cellulose. Optimized results showed that more than 42.7% of aromatics can be obtained under 260 °C for 5 h without external hydrogen pressure. Monophasic and biphasic parallel experimental results show that the strong lignin dissolving ability of the biphasic dissolution/separation system is helpful for aromatics production and separation, which promoted CHR depolymerization over Ru/C. Furthermore, CHR, products, depolymeirzation residue solid (DRS), and catalysts were carefully characterized by gas chromatography (GC-MS), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), gel permeation chromatrography (GPC), high-performance liquid chromatrography mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) analysis. Results demonstrated that the biphasic solvent–Ru/C coupling process can significantly alleviate repolymerization reactions. Based on these analysis results, the catalytic process in biphasic EtOAc/H2O was discussed. This work demonstrates that such a green biphasic catalytic/separation coupling system highlights a promising route for efficient biomass degradation and product separation at mild conditions without external hydrogen pressure.

Optimization of renewable C5 and C6 alkane production from acidic biomass hydrolysate over Ru/C catalyst

Yujing Weng,Songbai Qiu,Chenguang Wang,Lungang Chen,Zhengqiu Yuan,Mingyue Ding,Qi Zhang,Longlong Ma,Tiejun Wang

In this work, a dual-bed aqueous catalysis system with Ru/C as catalyst was proposed for the liquid alkane (pentane/hexane: C5/C6) production from acid biomass hydrolysate. The low temperature (413   K) hydrogenation of biomass-derived carbohydrates into polyols was carried out in the first fixed-bed. The high temperature (523   K) hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of polyols into alkanes was carried out in the down-stream bed. To screen the optimal reaction conditions, glucose and sorbitol were chosen for model tests. Whereby, reactor types, solution pH value, mineral acid, reaction temperature, pressure and sorbitol concentrations were studied. A maximum C5/C6 alkane yield of 61.9% was achieved from 20   wt% sorbitol solution (pH   =   1.5) under 523   K and 4   MPa H 2 pressure in the fixed-bed reactor. For cassava and corncob hydrolysate, C5/C6 alkane yield of 38.8% and 44.1% were obtained, respectively.

A well-fabricated Ru@C material derived from Ru/Zn-MOF with high activity and stability in the hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene

Zijian Wang,Jiaxin Zhang,Lele Yan,Bo Zhao,Lin Zheng,Haoran Guo,Yuxue Yue,Deman Han,Xianlang Chen,Rongrong Li

4-Chloroaniline (4-CAN) plays an important role in chemical and industrial production. However, it remains a challenge to avoid the hydrogenation of the C–Cl bond in the synthesis process to improve selectivity under high activity conditions. In this study, we in situ fabricated ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs) containing vacancies inserted into porous carbon (Ru@C-2) as a highly efficient catalyst for the catalytic hydrogenation of 4-chloronitrobenzene (4-CNB) with remarkable conversion (99.9%), selectivity (99.9%), and stability. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate that the appropriate Ru vacancies affect the charge distribution of the Ru@C-2 catalyst, promote the electron transfer between the Ru metal and support, and increase the active sites of the Ru metal, thus facilitating the adsorption of 4-CNB and the desorption of 4-CAN to improve the activity and stability of the catalyst. This study can provide some enlightenment for the development of new 4-CNB hydrogenation catalysts.

One-pot glucose conversion to levulinic acid and γ-valerolactone without external H2 using Ru/C combined with metal chloride catalysts

Mengli Zhou,Sichan Li,Haojie Tian,Xinyu Liu,Zhimin Wu,Qiying Liu,Jianchun Jiang

Levlinic acid (LA) and its derived γ-valerolactone (GVL) are the two important biomass derived platform molecules, which showed wide application in the fields of fine chemicals, drug and liquid fuel industrials. Considering the coupling of sequential steps for glucose to LA and GVL, selective production of LA and GVL via glucose one-pot conversion in water is an open challenge. Herein, we used metal chlorides as the acidic catalyst for glucose conversion to LA, obtaining the high yield of 77.8 C-mol% over SnCl 4 . Moreover, using the SnCl 4 and Ru/C as the combined catalyst, glucose or cellulose could be converted to GVL with the high yield of 60.1 or 57.9 C-mol% in the case of in situ hydrogenation by formic acid (the by-products during LA formation) decomposition. The formation of LA was responsible for the cooperative effect of BAS (Bronsted acid sites) and LAS (Lewis acid sites) of SnCl 4 for accelerating glucose isomerization, fructose dehydration followed by 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) rehydration, while the GVL production is relative to the highly efficient formic acid decomposition to H 2 followed by LA hydrogenation to GVL over Ru/C. This study provided an avenue for facile and highly efficient conversion of biomass and the derivatives to LA and GVL using commercial catalysts.
