The Ru-based catalysts with different preparation methods or supports were achieved and applied in efficiently catalytic elimination of 1,2-dichloroethane (1,2-DCE). It was firstly found that the redox ability and chlorine resistance of the catalyst could be improved by regulating the interaction between Ru and supports. Compared with other supports and conventionally impregnated methods, the Ru@ZSM-5 catalyst synthesized by the in-situ encapsulation strategy exhibited an excellent low-temperature catalytic performance ( T 50 = 262°C, T 90 = 327°C), superior stability in long-term test as well as ideal target products. The acidity, specific surface area, and interaction with precious metals of the supports have significant influences on the catalytic activity, and the Ru clusters inside the pore structures are more closely bound to the framework Al species, which promotes the oxidation behavior. The encapsulation strategy also significantly improves the Ru dispersion thereby facilitates oxygen activation as well as Cl-containing volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) deep oxidation, and preserves large amounts of Brønsted acid sites to optimize the hydrolysis mechanism for purification of CVOCs. Subsequently, the synergistic effect between metal redox and acidity is greatly optimized, thus extremely promoting the catalytic efficiency of 1,2-DCE oxidation.

It is challenging for catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to the existence of HCl in municipal solid waste incineration flue gases. A thorough probe into the deactivation mechanism is imperative but still lacking. Herein, the poisoning effect of gaseous HCl on a Ru-based catalyst for toluene catalytic oxidation was investigated. Toluene conversion and CO 2 selectivity decreased dramatically from 89.3 % and 93.8 % to 15.0 % and 8.0 %, respectively at 250 °C under HCl atmosphere. HCl led to a reduction of low-temperature redox properties, as well as a decrease of BET surface area, surface oxygen content and mobility, resulting in a loss of catalytic activity. HCl combined with active Ru and Mn, thereby restricting the electron transfer between Ru 4+ and Mn 2+ . Moreover, HCl could be oxidized by active oxygen species to form Cl• radical, which subsequently reacted with toluene oxidation intermediates, resulting in the generation of chlorinated compounds, such as chlorobenzene, dichlorobenzene, carbon tetrachloride, and benzyl chloride. These harmful chlorinated compounds predominantly deposited on catalyst surface. The protective role of H 2 O against HCl poisoning was mainly attributed to the competitive adsorption between H 2 O and Cl ions, the washing effect, and the promoting of intermediates oxidation and oxygen activation. It is noteworthy that during toluene oxidation in the presence of HCl + H 2 O, a detectable level of 0.048 ng I-TEQ/Nm 3 PCDD/Fs was observed in the off-gas.

Supported metal catalysts play a significant role in heterogeneous catalysis in liquid phase reaction systems, but they usually suffer from a stability problem. Encapsulation of active metal species without the compromise of catalytic performance has been considered as an effective strategy. Here, we report an ultrastable Ru-based catalyst with particle size of around 1.1 nm for selective hydrogenation reaction. The highly dispersed Ru species are covered by the in situ formed porous N–C–ZnO overlayer, which is induced through the transforming of ZIF-8 shell that derives from a ZnO substrate. The resulting Ru/ZnO@N–C–ZnO catalyst can exhibit good stability in the hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene after 20 cyclic runs with 100% selectivity toward p-chloroaniline. Comparatively, the naked Ru/ZnO catalyst with larger Ru particles shows serious metal leaching issue with inferior stability and poor selectivity. It is revealed that the excellent performance of Ru/ZnO@N–C–ZnO is attributed to the porous overlayer, which strengthens the bonding of Ru nanoparticles on ZnO.

Ru/AC catalyst used in acetylene hydrochlorination reaction has several drawbacks such as poor dispersion, metal loss, serious carbon deposition, and insufficient active sites. To address these issues of traditional Ru/AC, in this study, the supported Ru-L x /AC catalysts were synthesized by the coordination of ruthenium precursor and several structural triazine ligands. The complexation of heteroatomic structure to Ru atom formed a local active domain, which is more conducive to the synergistic adsorption and activation of the initial reactants, and further optimizes the reaction microenvironment. The spatial topological structure with conjugated structures effectively promoted the transfer of electrons between the heteroatoms and the ruthenium precursors, facilitating the stabilization of active Ru species. The newly developed synthetic process also increased dispersion of reaction components and impeded the sintering of ruthenium components promoted by the local structural forces. The optimum Ru-1,3,5-triazine/AC (Ru-L 1 /AC) catalyst exhibited 162% higher acetylene conversion than the benchmark Ru/AC catalyst. The significantly improved activity and stability of the optimized catalyst will have a huge application prospect in industry.
