Electrocatalytic oxidation (ECO) has attracted attention because of its high efficiency and environmental friendliness in water treatment. The preparation of anodes with high catalytic activity and long service lifetimes is a core part of electrocatalytic oxidation technology. Here, porous Ti/RuO2-IrO2@Pt, Ti/RuO2-TiO2@Pt, and Ti/Y2O3-RuO2-TiO2@Pt anodes were fabricated by means of modified micro-emulsion and vacuum impregnation methods with high porosity titanium plates as substrates. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that RuO2-IrO2@Pt, RuO2-TiO2@Pt, and Y2O3-RuO2-TiO2@Pt nanoparticles were coated on the inner surface of the as-prepared anodes to form the active layer. Electrochemical analysis revealed that the high porosity substrate could result in a large electrochemically active area, and a long service life (60 h at 2 A cm−2current density, 1 mol L−1H2SO4as the electrolyte, and 40 °C). The degradation experiments conducted on tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) showed that the porous Ti/Y2O3-RuO2-TiO2@Pt had the highest degradation efficiency for tetracycline, reaching 100% removal in 10 min with the lowest energy consumption of 167 kWh kg−1TOC. The reaction was consistent with the pseudo-primary kinetics results with a k value of 0.5480 mol L−1s−1, which was 16 times higher than that of the commercial Ti/RuO2-IrO2electrode. The fluorospectrophotometry studies verified that the degradation and mineralization of tetracycline were mainly ascribed to the •OH generated in the electrocatalytic oxidation process. This study thus presents a series of alternative anodes for future industrial wastewater treatment.

The chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is a crucial step in the production of chlorine gas and active chlorine by chlor-alkali electrolysis. Currently, the endeavor to fabricate electrodes capable of yielding high current density at minimal overpotential remains a central challenge in advancing the realm of chlorine evolution reactions. Here, we grow TiO 2 and RuO 2 on MXene@carbon cloth (CC) through the favorable affinity and induced deposition effect between the surface functional groups of MXene and the metal. A self-supported electrode (RuTiO 2 /MXene@CC) with strong binding at the electrocatalyst–support interface and weak adhesion at electrocatalyst–bubble interface is constructed. The RuTiO 2 /MXene@CC can reduce the electron density of RuO 2 by regulating the electron redistribution at the heterogeneous interface, thus enhancing the adsorption of Cl − . RuTiO 2 /MXene@CC could achieve a high current density of 1000 mA·cm − 2 at a small overpotential of 220 mV, superior to commercial dimensionally stable anodes (DSA). This study provides a new strategy for constructing efficient CER catalysts at high current density.

Developing efficient, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) remains a significant challenge, requiring the stabilization and enhancement of catalyst activity under harsh conditions. Here, we present cobalt-doped ruthenium dioxide (Co0.3Ru0.7O2) on TiO2 as an electrocatalyst toward an acidic oxygen evolution reaction. The Co0.3Ru0.7O2–TiO2 achieves an impressive overpotential of 322 mV at 1 A cm–2 and demonstrates stable operation for over 1000 h at 500 mA cm–2 in a PEMWE device. Comprehensive experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the doping of Co atoms into the rutile RuO2 lattice optimizes the geometric configuration. Moreover, the lattice-matched interface between Co0.3Ru0.7O2 and TiO2 promotes interfacial electron redistribution and stabilizes active centers under oxidative conditions. This facilitates a dual-site fully parallel oxidation (DFO) pathway in which intermediates are synchronously adsorbed and desorbed at Ru and Co sites, enabling direct O–O coupling. This work highlights the synergistic effect of the Ru–Co dual sites and TiO2 support in establishing a stable, self-regulating electronic environment that drives efficient intermediate transformation via the DFO mechanism.

Exploring highly active and stable catalysts toward hydrogen evolution reactions and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) is the key for electrochemical water splitting. Herein, density functional theory (DFT) calculation results forecast that the defect-rich RuO 2 and TiO 2 nano-heterostructures can effectively adjust the electron structure of RuO 2 , and accelerate the water electrocatalysis, consequently reinforcing the intrinsic activity of the catalyst. Experimentally, to form an integrated nano-heterostructure, a facile approach is designed for in situ fabrication of TiO 2 on Ti mesh (TM), simultaneously combined with defective RuO 2 (D-RuO 2 ) nanoparticles. Benefiting from the rich active sites, the D-RuO 2 /TiO 2 /TM nano-heterostructure formed provides current densities of 50 mA/cm 2 at 71 mV for HER and 10 mA/cm 2 at 296 mV for OER in alkaline media. For overall water splitting, the electrolyzer assembled with D-RuO 2 /TiO 2 /TM electrode can reach 10 mA/cm 2 with a voltage of only 1.59 V. Moreover, under a fixed current density, such an electrolyzer also achieves an outstanding stability.

The Deacon process is important and highly desired for chlorine recycling in the chlor-alkali industry. Ru-based catalysts have always attracted much attention in the Deacon reaction; however, they are very easy to deactivate. One of the most advanced methods for adjusting the electrical and geometrical configurations of metal centers is lattice strain engineering, which plays a key role in controlling the interactions between adsorbate molecules and catalytic surfaces. In this study, a catalyst was developed via lattice matching between the active site and the support to enhance d-electron density near the Fermi level and strengthen metal–support interactions. The resulting catalyst achieves sustained chlorine production with a conversion rate of 90% and maintains stability for over 200 h during the Deacon process. This work presents a strategy to inhibit the aggregation of RuO2 and a fresh platform for designing highly stable catalysts.

Under technologically relevant oxygen-rich conditions, the reaction mechanism for CO oxidation over platinum group metals (PGMs) is often complicated by oxide formation. Ru, as a special PGM exhibiting "pressure gap" phenomenon, its optimal active state has been proved to be an ultrathin Ru oxide, rather than pure metal like other PGMs. Therefore, it is plausible to suspect that the sharp rise of CO oxidation rate within narrow temperature range for Ru-based catalysts is not solely controlled by the O 2 activation rate. In this study, we investigated this temperature-dependent sharp rise in the CO oxidation rate through experimental and theoretical calculations. In the rate mutation region, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) detected a rapid increase in CO 2 production as the adsorbed CO species were annihilated, accompanied by a shift in the reaction orders of CO and O 2 from -0.29 and +0.59 (∼205 °C) to +0.94 and +0.15 (∼215 °C), respectively. The thermodynamic phase diagram indicates that the RuO 2 (110) surface consistently accommodates O* species, but fails to form a stable CO* phase when the temperature exceeds 580 K. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that initiating the Mars-van Krevelen ( M −vK) mechanism at low temperatures requires overcoming a relatively high activation energy (Ea 1 = 1.28 eV), hence CO prefers the Langmuir-Hinshelwood ( L − H ) mechanism on the Ru/TiO 2 surface. However, as the temperature rises, the M −vK mechanism, once initiated, the activation and reaction of O 2 assisted by oxygen vacancies are thermodynamically(△ H = -2.03 eV) and kinetically (Ea 2 = 0.37 eV) more favorable, respectively. This shift from the L − H to the M −vK mechanism significantly enhances the CO oxidation rate on RuO 2 /TiO 2 catalysts.

A novel Pt-RuO 2 /TiO 2 nanorod (Pt-RuO 2 /TNR) composite catalysts are prepared via the polyol method, in which the RuO 2 -TNR supports are synthesized by coprecipitation technology. Morphology characterization results demonstrate that RuO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) load on TNR carrier, and then Pt NPs uniformly disperse on the surface of RuO 2 -TNR with an average particle size of about 3.5 nm. The peak shifts of XPS patterns for Pt and Ti elements indicate the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between Pt NPs and RuO 2 -TNR. Compared with Pt/C catalyst, Pt-RuO 2 /TNR exhibits enhanced oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability by the use of electrochemical testing techniques. ΔE 1/2 (about 30 mV) towards more positive potential represents the superior ORR performance of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR relative to Pt/C. Furthermore, the electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR decreases only by 28 %, while the one of Pt/C is 53.8 % before and after accelerated degradation tests (ADT) for 20,000 cycles; and the loss on mass activity (MA) of the former (23 %) is much less than the one of the latter (52 %). Moreover, ECSA of Pt-RuO 2 /TNR decays only 5.8 %, whereas a considerable decline of ECSA for Pt/C is 41.5 % before and after corrosion testing for 50 h. Pt-RuO 2 /TNR could be used as an effective carbon-free electrocatalyst to improve the performance and stability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Water electrolysis is an important technology for green hydrogen production, but the sluggish kinetics of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) lead to high overall energy consumption. Using the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) instead of OER has been considered an effective route for reducing potential and treating urea-containing wastewater. Here, we introduced Sn into RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti through three methods: electrodeposition, hydrothermal and ion exchange, and constructed a series of NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti electrodes. The systematic characterization showed that Sn was successfully introduced in the form of rutile SnO 2 , and the elements were evenly distributed. The Sn introduction method significantly affected morphology and electrocatalytic performance of electrodes: NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-E prepared by electrodeposition method exhibited a compact nanosheet structure, high surface roughness and abundant exposed active sites, exhibiting the best activity in HER/OER, while NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I prepared by ion exchange method maintained its original morphology, and NiO nanoclusters were evenly dispersed, showing the best performance in UOR. The potential of NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I was only 1.39 V ( vs . RHE) at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , and it operated stably for more than 132 h. When NiO-(Sn)-RuO 2 -TiO 2 /Ti-I was assembled into a HER‖UOR two-electrode system, the cell voltage at 100 mA cm −2 was only 1.65 V, which was 0.26 V lower than that of the traditional HER‖OER. This work reveals the modulating effect of Sn introduction method on the electrocatalytic performance of multi-component oxides, and provides a scalable solution for the advancement of energy-saving hydrogen production coupled with degradation of urea.

Developing durable and active catalysts for the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a central challenge for water electrolysis. Here, we demonstrate that constructing supported p−n junctions provides an effective strategy to simultaneously couple interfacial water activation with active-site stabilization. RuO2 nanoparticles immobilized on oxygen vacancy-rich TiO2 nanoribbons (RuO2/TiO2NRs) form a robust p−n heterojunction whose built-in field directs charge separation and tunes interfacial energetics. TiO2 acts as a water-activation co-catalyst, facilitating H2O dissociation at the junction, while structural confinement and charge redistribution suppress Ru over-oxidation and dissolution. A transient potential scanning technique directly visualizes the interfacial charge storage and release behaviors, providing dynamic evidence for the built-in electric field of the p−n junction in regulating charge separation and water-dissociation kinetics. Theoretical calculations reveal electron enrichment on Ru, weakened *OH/*O adsorption, and a reduced barrier for the potential-determining *O → *OOH step, while differential electrochemical mass spectrometry confirms an adsorbate-evolution mechanism without lattice oxygen participation. Consequently, RuO2/TiO2NRs deliver an overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 and sustain a ∼650 h durability. This heterojunction-guided loading strategy unifies activity and acid durability by co-engineering charge transfer and water activation at oxide/oxide interfaces.

In this study, the performance of a zero-gap flow-through reactor with three-dimensional (3D) porous Ti/RuO2-TiO2@Pt anodes was systematically investigated for the electrocatalytic oxidation of phenolic wastewater, considering phenol and 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) as the target pollutants. The optimum parameters for the electrochemical oxidation of phenol and 4-NP were examined. For phenol degradation, at an initial concentration of 50 mg/L, initial pH of 7, NaCl concentration of 10.0 g/L, current density of 10 mA/cm2, and retention time of 30 min, the degradation efficiency achieved was 95.05%, with an energy consumption of 15.39 kWh/kg; meanwhile, for 4-NP, the degradation efficiency was 98.42% and energy consumption was 19.21 kWh/kg (at an initial concentration of 40 mg/L, initial pH of 3, NaCl concentration of 10.0 g/L, current density of 10 mA/cm2, and retention time of 30 min). The electrocatalytic oxidation of phenol and 4-NP conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetics model, and thekvalues were 0.2562 min−1and 0.1736 min−1, respectively, which are 1.7 and 3.6-times higher than those of a conventional electrolyzer. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS) was used to verify the intermediates formed during the degradation of phenol or 4-NP and a possible degradation pathway was provided. The extremely narrow electrode distance and the flow-through configuration of the zero-gap flow-through reactor were thought to be essential for its lower energy consumption and higher mass transfer efficiency. The zero-gap flow-through reactor with a novel 3D porous Ti/RuO2-TiO2@Pt electrode is a superior alternative for the treatment of industrial wastewater.
