NIR-II sensitive Co9S8/S-CDs@PEG nanocomposites with enhanced multi-enzyme mediated phototherapy

Keke Kang,Limin Wang,Yajie Ma,Kai Yu,Jingwei Liu,Fengyu Qu,Huiming Lin

Here, Co 9 S 8 / [email protected] ( [email protected] ) nanocomposites are synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal process. Firstly, sulfur-doped carbon dots (S-CDs) are prepared by using 3-mercaptopropionic acid as a precursor. A region with denser –SH group is regarded as nucleation site on S-CDs for the growth of Co 9 S 8 to induce heterostructure. As-synthesized [email protected] possess great harvest in NIR region and hyperthermia (51.5%, 1064 nm) for photothermal (PTT). Besides, hyperthermia can elevate the thermal energy of nanocomposite to assist low-energy NIR-II irradiation (1064 nm, 1.16 eV), realizing the excitation of Co 9 S 8 (1.46 eV) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation for photodynamic therapy (PDT). What's more, [email protected] exhibits GOx-like activity that could consume glucose to elevate H 2 O 2 level and inhibit intracellular energy supply. In addition, they also show mimic peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) characterization, and the tandem multi-nanozye activities endue the enhanced chemotherapy (CDT) and PDT. [email protected] reveals the greater ROS generation and nanozyme activity compared with pure Co 9 S 8 @PEG, attributing to the efficient charge separation in heterostructure. The novel biodegradation of [email protected] makes the elimination via feces and urine within 2 weeks. That is associated with PTT/PDT/CDT/starvation therapy to activate immune response for anticancer.

Facile Synthesis of Biomass N, S-CDs for Fluorescent Detection of Tetracycline in Wastewater

Bo Yu,Suchang Zou,Tianle Wang,Feng Guo,Weilong Shi,Zhimin Ao

As the growing presence of antibiotic residues in environmental water bodies poses an increasing risk to ecological safety and human health, developing simple and efficient methods for the targeted detection of antibiotics is of particular importance. In this study, we propose a simple method for the one-step hydrothermal synthesis of N, S-co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) using disulfide bonds from discarded badminton shuttlecocks. We investigated the effects of different synthesis temperatures on its performance and confirmed the method’s excellent performance in detecting tetracycline (TC) concentrations, with results demonstrating that varying synthesis temperatures affect the degree and distribution of carbonization, thereby influencing fluorescence intensity. Consequently, employing N, S-CDs-180, which exhibits optimal photoluminescence properties, as the sensing probe for the detection of TC solutions at varying concentrations yielded an excellent linear equation for fluorescence quenching and the detection limit is 1.963 mg/L. Additionally, the fluorescence stability of N,S-CDs-180 was investigated in laboratory water, tap water, seawater, lake water, and industrial wastewater, all of which demonstrated exceptional environmental adaptability. Furthermore, a systematic investigation into the target selectivity of N, S-CDs-180 toward various antibiotics revealed that this material exhibits a sensitive quenching response specifically to tetracycline-class antibiotics while showing no quenching effect on non-tetracycline antibiotics, collectively indicating that the as-prepared N, S-CDs can serve as potential fluorescent probes for the highly selective detection of tetracycline-class antibiotics in complex aqueous systems.

N, S-CDs for colorimetric/fluorometric dual-mode nanosensor and smartphone-based determination of curcumin in fruits

Zhifeng Cai,Tianyu Miao,Guiyu Meng,Yanan Li

N,S-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) were fabricated by utilizing m-phenylenediamine and β-mercaptoethylamine as precursors and designed as colorimetric/fluorometric dual-mode nanosensors. The curcumin (CUR) could quench the green fluorescence around 509 nm. The mechanism of fluorescence quenching was mainly attributed to the static quenching effect. Meanwhile, the color alterations of sensing solution were acquired with CUR contents changing from 0 to 50 μM. Thereby, the quantitative measurement of CUR could be materialized based on colorimetric and fluorometric dual-mode sensing methods. The wide linearity and low detection limit (LOD) were achieved through this dual-mode nanosensor. The feasibility of this system was continuously confirmed via the assay of CUR in fruit samples. Moreover, a portable smartphone-assisted detection system based on N, S-CDs suggested a facile, inexpensive, and efficient approach for detecting CUR in actual fruit samples.

Yanhong Liu,Ping Chen,Kangkang Yu,Zhening Wu,Na Wang,Xiaoqi Yu

Heteroatoms doped carbon dots (CDs) have attracted extensive attention for their superior optical properties, facile preparation and multifunctional applications in environmental detection, cell imaging and gene delivery. Herein, Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) were synthesized directly from methyl cellulose (MC), l -cysteine ( l -cys) and ethylenediamine (EDA), showing excitation-dependent emission properties and relative high quantum yield (QY) of 12.3%. The obtained N,S-CDs are responsive to pH and temperature, suggesting pH- and temperature-dependent fluorescent features. Moreover, N,S-CDs are utilized to image and exhibit selective location inside the nucleus region both in living and fixed cells. Relative mechanisms have been explored by ribonuclease digestion testing and co-staining analysis with commercial nucleic acid dye. N,S-CDs show the specifical distribution in RNA-rich regions and positive response to RNA in cells. In brief, the developed N,S-CDs possess multi-faced application potency in pH sensing, temperature monitoring and RNA-selective imaging in cells.

N, S-CDs encapsulated polyamide fluorescent membranes: An efficient strategy for the retention and detection of mercury (II) ions in aqueous environments

Ming Li,Xuemeng Zhang,Dongqing Wang,Xiaofei Fan,Qianyong Cao,Huining Xiao,Shiwei Guo,Chungang Yuan,Yuling Zhang

Nanofiltration membranes are extensively implemented in water treatment, particularly for the efficient interception of toxic heavy metal ions. This work introduces a novel functional membrane fabricated via interfacial polymerization, incorporating nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) as additives to enhance mercury removal from aqueous solutions. The integration of carbon dots has been demonstrated to significantly augment the membrane’s hydrophilicity, thereby improving the pure water flux. Moreover, it modulates the crosslinking degree of the polyamide layer, enhancing mercury retention. The N, S-CDs, due to their high selectivity for Hg (II), confer the modified membrane with fluorescence detection capabilities, allowing for the precise quantification of mercury rejection. The membrane achieved a remarkable Hg (II) retention rate of 94.85 %, with a pure water flux of 10.68 L m −2  h −1  bar −1 , and attained a detection limit of 5.49 × 10 −7 M for Hg (II). The durability and reusability of the membrane are substantiated by soaking and recycling trials, underscoring the stable encapsulation of N, S-CDs within the nanofiltration matrix.

Ultrasensitive off-on-off fluorescent nanosensor for protamine and trypsin detection based on inner-filter effect between N,S-CDs and gold nanoparticles

Qiaozhen Bao,Dan Lin,Yaoran Gao,Lina Wu,Jinhua Fu,Khuslen Galaa,Xinhua Lin,Liqing Lin

Herein we develop a novel “off–on-off” fluorescent nanosensor for the ultra-sensitive detection of protamine and trypsin based on the as-prepared nitrogen and sulphur doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). N,S-CDs were treated as fluorophore, while AuNPs were treated as fluorescence absorber. By experimental studies, the fluorescence quenching mechanism   of N,S-CDs by AuNPs was inner-filter effect (IFE). Upon addition of protamine to the mixed aqueous of N,S-CDs/AuNPs, the electrostatic interaction and Au-N bond between protamine and AuNPs resulted in AuNPs aggregation, and the quenched fluorescence of N,S-CDs could be recovered. Protamine is rich in arginine and can be specifically hydrolyzed by trypsin, resulting in the deaggregation of AuNPs and further quenching the fluorescence of N,S-CDs. Thus, we can determine the concentration of protamine and trypsin by measuring fluorescence   intensity of N,S-CDs.   Under the optimized conditions, the fluorescence intensity showed a good linear relationship with protamine concentration of 20–260 ng/mL with the detection limit of 4.7 ng/mL. Meanwhile, quantitative determination of trypsin in a range from 10 to 140 ng/mL with the detection limit of 4.3 ng/mL can be achieved in this fluorescent nanosensor. This fluorescent nanosensor also showed excellent selectivity, and we successfully applied it for the detection of protamine and trypsin in human urine samples. Based on the above findings, we conclude that this novel “off–on-off” fluorescent nanosensor has great potential in clinical diagnosis.

Green synthesis of N,S dual heteroatom-doped fluorescent carbon dots (N,S-CDs) and their applications in gentamicin sensing and dual-switch anti-counterfeiting encryption

Xiang Long,Hongxiang Liu,Jing Hu,Shaogui Wu

Herein, we report a facile one-step solvothermal synthesis of nitrogen and sulfur co-doped fluorescent carbon dots (N,S-CDs) using benzoic acid as the carbon source and sulfonamide as the doping agent. The synthesized N,S-CDs exhibit stable photoluminescence with an impressive fluorescence quantum yield of 16.8 %. These N,S-CDs maintain their luminescent properties under various challenging conditions, including high salt concentrations, elevated temperatures, UV radiation exposure, acidic or alkaline environments, long-term storage, and different solvents. Notably, the photoluminescence of N,S-CDs is excitation-wavelength dependent, with emission wavelengths tunable from 470 nm to 585 nm. Furthermore, the N,S-CDs display distinct fluorescent hues in aqueous and ethanolic media, presenting a novel dual-switch anti-counterfeiting ink system. Leveraging the sensitivity of N,S-CDs to gentamicin, we have developed a facile and rapid detection method for this antibiotic, which has been successfully applied to the analysis of authentic milk samples. This research contributes a novel and efficient protocol for the fabrication of high-performance carbon dots, thereby expanding their potential applications in food analysis and anti-counterfeiting technologies.

Nitrogen and Sulfur Co-Doped Fluorescent Carbon Dots Constructing PVA@N, S-CDs Composite Film: A Next-Generation Food Packaging Material With Dual Functions of Chlortetracycline Detection and Ultraviolet Shielding

Yue Liu,Xinyuan Wang,Xueyu Shi,Shaogui Wu

Nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs) were synthesized through a facile one-step hydrothermal approach that employed L-proline as the carbon precursor and methyl orange as the dopant. The as-prepared N, S-CDs exhibited robust cyan photoluminescence with a high quantum yield of 22.5%. Because of their superior optical properties, these N, S-CDs were developed as a sensitive fluorescent probe for the selective detection of chlortetracycline (CTC). The sensing mechanism was attributed to dynamic quenching, yielding a wide linear response from 0 to 25 µmol·L −1 ( R 2 = 0.998) and a low detection limit of 0.94 µmol·L −1 . The practical utility of this probe was validated in environmental water and milk samples, achieving satisfactory recoveries ranging from 83.67% to 94.46%. Additionally, multifunctional PVA@N, S-CDs composite films were fabricated by incorporating N, S-CDs into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix via a solvent-casting method. These flexible and highly transparent films demonstrated exceptional UV protection, effectively shielding over 99.5% of UV-C and UV-B radiation while converting the absorbed energy into visible light through the down-conversion effect. Application trials using grapes as a food model confirmed that the composite films significantly mitigated UV-induced deterioration and moisture loss. Overall, this work presented a versatile carbon dot-based platform that integrates specific chemical sensing with efficient UV-shielding, providing a promising strategy for advanced applications in smart food packaging and environmental monitoring.

Highly selective and sensitive detection of trace amoxicillin with a novel fluorescent nanoprobe N, S-CDs@MIP based on S/N co-doped carbon quantum dots combined with molecularly imprinted polymer

Leikai Ye,Fangyan Chen,Yubin Tang,Wenqian Sun,Yanhua Song

At present, the rapid, sensitive, and highly selective detection of trace organic contaminants is a research spot in the field of environment. Herein, a novel fluorescent nanoprobe N, S-CDs@MIP based on N/S co-doped carbon quantum dots (CDs) coupled with amoxicillin molecularly imprinted polymer was synthesized. The fluorescent property of N, S-CDs@MIP and fluorescence quenching level of amoxicillin to N, S-CDs@MIP was explored. Furthermore, the fluorescence analysis method based on N, S-CDs@MIP probe for quantitatively detecting amoxicillin was established. The synthesized N, S-CDs@MIP has a maximum fluorescence emission wavelength of 440 nm and a significantly selective fluorescence response toward amoxicillin with a large imprinting factor of 4.07. For the developed fluorescence analysis method, the detection limit, the linear range of the standard curve, and relative standard deviation (RSD) were obtained as 1.17 ng/mL, 5.8–200 ng/mL, and <3 %, respectively. The real environmental water samples were measured with a high accuracy with the recovery of 83.6 % ~ 104.7 % and RSD of 2.3 % ~ 5.1 %. Compared to the HPLC-UV, HPLC-MS, and the fluorescence detection method based on CDs or doped CDs, the established fluorescence detection method exhibits high selectivity, wide linear range, and low detection limit. It is greatly promising in the quick detection of trace amoxicillin.
