The S1(1ππ*) state decay dynamics of 2-pyridone excited around the 000 band origin is investigated using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique. At a pump wavelength of 334.0 nm, the vibrational ground state and a few low energy vibrational states covered by the bandwidth of the pump laser pulses are excited. The lifetimes of the vibrational states show strong dependence on the vibrational energy and mode. A quantum beat between two lowest energy vibrational states is also observed. This study provides quantitative information about the vibrational-state dependent lifetime of the S1 state of 2-pyridone.

The S 1 state decay dynamics of 2-hydroxypyridine following UV excitation at a wavelength range of 276.9−250.0 nm is investigated using femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron imaging technique. Based on pump wavelength dependence of the decay dynamics, a refined decay picture is proposed. At pump wavelength of 276.9 nm, the S 1 state is depopulated through intersystem crossing to lower triplet state(s). At 264.0 nm, both intersystem crossing to lower triplet state(s) and internal conversion to the ground state are in operation. At 250.0 nm, internal conversion to the ground state becomes dominated.
Capturing and detecting Fe 3+ ions in aqueous solution is of great significance in biological systems as well as the water treatment industry. Herein, pyrene-modified cellulose nanocrystal (CNC-1-Pyr) acting as a fluorescent probe was prepared by a one-step esterification reaction, which shows geometry relaxation under UV-light excitation. Experiments and density functional theory-based simulations revealed that the structural geometry relaxation is controlled by the electron excitation and fluorescence emission. The S1 state of CNC-1-Pyr provides a conformation match for coordination with Fe 3+ under the excitation of UV light, facilitating the detecting and capturing of Fe 3+ efficiently.
