Mn/SAPO-34 as an efficient catalyst for the low-temperature selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Chengkai Pang,Yuqun Zhuo,Qiyu Weng

A series of Mn-exchanged SAPO-34 catalysts were synthesized and developed as catalysts for the low temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with ammonia in the presence of excess oxygen. 4Mn/SAPO-34 showed the highest SCR activity in the temperature range of 120–210 °C. The microstructure of zeolite supports, acidity, manganese species and reaction mechanism were investigated in detail by BET, NH3-TPD, UV-Vis, H2-TPR, XPS and in situ DRIFTS. Mn3+ and Mn4+ related species were proved to be the active sites for the SCR reaction. The Eley–Rideal mechanism was proved to be effective on 4Mn/SAPO-34 for the low temperature SCR reaction in which coordinated NH4+ species react with gas-phase NO to form an activated transition state and subsequently decomposed to N2 and H2O.

In situ regeneration of sulfated Cu/SAPO-34 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3

Yu Qifan,Liu Xuesong,Chen Hongfeng,Liu Shuang,Jiang Peng

The regeneration mechanism of sulfated Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts in reducing atmospheres (5% H 2 /Ar and NH 3 /Ar at 600 °C) was investigated by using a series of characterization methods. Hydrogen regeneration improved the catalysts’ NH 3 -SCR activity from 150 to 550 °C remarkably, while ammonia regeneration exhibited relatively less obvious promotion effect. The TPR of hydrogen and EPR spectra data show that the regeneration process affects the amount and the coordination of the active isolated Cu 2+ species significantly. The desulfation increases the amount of isolated copper ions and improves the catalytic activity of SCR.

The Cu migration of Cu-SAPO-34 catalyst for ammonia selective catalytic reduction of NOx during high temperature hydrothermal aging treatment

Xianghui Li,Yingnan Zhao,Huawang Zhao,Mengke Liu,Yuhan Ma,Xin Yong,Hong Chen,Yongdan Li

Two kinds of Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts, prepared with a one-pot technique using Cu- tetraethylenepentamine as co-template and an ion-exchange method, were hydrothermally treated at 750 °C for at least 16 h. The migration of Cu species during hydrothermal treatment and the corresponding effect on the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x were examined and characterized. A certain amount of CuO exists outside and inner the crystallites in the as prepared ion-exchanged sample, whereas copper is mainly atomically dispersed in the one-pot sample existing as isolated Cu 2+ . After hydrothermal treatment for 16 h, the amount of the inner nanosized CuO in the ion-exchanged sample reduced and the copper disperses to form more isolated Cu 2+ . However, surface CuO particles increase at the sacrifice of isolated Cu 2+ with extending the hydrothermal treatment to 24 h. Aggregation of Cu 2+ species also happens during the aging treatment over the one-pot prepared sample where the initial Cu is atomically dispersed as isolated Cu 2+ . The increase of the amount of the isolated Cu 2+ enhances the low-temperature (< 350 °C) performance. However, the increase of the amount of surface CuO particles in the aged samples promotes the nonselective NH 3 oxidation reaction in the high temperature range and results in the lowering of the SCR activity by limiting NH 3 supply.

MnOx Supported on Hierarchical SAPO-34 for the Low-Temperature Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3: Catalytic Activity and SO2 Resistance

Lusha Zhou,Jinkun Guan,Chenglong Yu,Bichun Huang

The ethanol dispersion method was employed to synthesize a series of MnOx/SAPO-34 catalysts using SAPO-34 with the hierarchical pore structure as the zeolite carrier, which were prepared by facile acid treatment with citric acid. Physicochemical properties of catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, BET, TEM, NH3-TPD, SEM, FT-IR, Py-IR, H2-TRP and TG/DTG. NH3-SCR performances of the hierarchical MnOx/SAPO-34 catalysts were evaluated at low temperatures. Results show that citric acid etching solution at a concentration of 0.1 mol/L yielded a hierarchical MnOx/SAPO-34-0.1 catalyst withca.15 wt.% Mn loading, exhibiting optimal catalytic activity and SO2tolerance at low temperatures. Almost 100% NO conversion and over 90% N2selectivity at 120 °C under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 40,000 h−1could be obtained over this sample. Furthermore, the NO conversion was still higher than 65% when 100 ppm SO2was introduced to the reaction gas for 4 h. These could be primarily attributed to the large specific surface area, high surface acidity concentration and abundant chemisorbed oxygen species provided by the hierarchical pore structure, which could also increase the mass transfer of the reaction gas. This finding suggests that the NH3-SCR activity and SO2poisoning tolerance of hierarchical MnOx/SAPO-34 catalysts at low temperatures can be improved by controlling the morphology of the catalysts, which might supply a rational strategy for the design and synthesis of Mn-based SCR catalysts.

Insights into Migration and Transformation of Cu Species during SO2 Poisoning and Hydrothermal Aging of Cu/SAPO-34 NH3–SCR Catalysts

Fumei Wang,Qi Cai,Xinhua He,Boxiong Shen,Leila Negahdar,Shuo Feng,Andrew M. Beale

Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts have been widely used for the reduction of NOx from diesel exhaust by ammonia-selective catalytic reduction (SCR). Sulfur poisoning remains a challenge for Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts in NH3–SCR, restricting its application. In this study, Cu/SAPO-34 samples containing a mixture of Cu species comprising isolated Cu2+ located in the 6MR, Cu(OH)+ in 8MR, CuO clusters/nanoparticles, and Cu+ species were prepared. The Cu speciation during SO2 and hydrothermal aging of Cu/SAPO-34 SCR catalysts was subsequently studied. While hydrothermal aging had little effect on catalytic activity, the sulfur-aged sample exhibited deterioration in NH3–SCR activity over the temperature range of 100–575 °C. The breakage and collapse of the zeotype framework and chemical deactivation of the Cu/SAPO-34 catalyst after exposure to SO2 and H2O took place. A combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and TGA-DT-DSC revealed the presence of ammonium bisulfate, copper bisulfate/sulfate, aluminum sulfate, and sulfuric acid after SO2 and H2O copoisoning under SCR conditions. Furthermore, Cu(OH)+ tended to migrate to form isolated Cu2+ and Cu+, as well as agglomerate to form CuO particles. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that SO2 and O2 could readily be absorbed by CuO particles to form stable copper bisulfate/sulfate species with the following order of preference: CuO > Cu+ > Cu2+ > Cu(OH)+. In contrast, Cu(OH)+ was less prone to be poisoned by easily releasing SO3 than other Cu species sites.

Synthesis and kinetics investigation of meso-microporous Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction of NO with ammonia

Jixing Liu,Fuhong Yu,Jian Liu,Lifeng Cui,Zhen Zhao,Yuechang Wei,Qianyao Sun

A series of meso-microporous Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts were successfully synthesized by a one-pot hydrothermal crystallization method, and these catalysts exhibited excellent NH 3 -SCR performance at low temperature. Their structure and physic chemical properties were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N 2 sorption-desorption, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission spectrometer (ICP-AES), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XPS), Temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD), Ultraviolet visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis DRS) and Temperature programmed reduction (TPR). The analysis results indicate that the high activities of Cu-SAPO-34 catalysts could be attributed to the enhancement of redox property, the formation of mesopores and the more acid sites. Furthermore, the kinetic results verify that the formation of mesopores remarkably reduces diffusion resistance and then improves the accessibility of reactants to catalytically active sites. The 1.0-Cu-SAPO-34 catalyst exhibited the high NO conversion (>   90%) among the wide activity temperature window in the range of 150–425°C.

A highly efficient SAPO-34 catalyst for improving light olefins in methanol conversion: Insight into the role of hierarchical porosities and tailoring acid properties based on in situ NH3-poisoning

Quanhua Wang,Wenwen Zhang,Xiaosen Ma,Yanchao Liu,Lichen Zhang,Jiajun Zheng,Yan Wang,Wenlin Li,Binbin Fan,Ruifeng Li

Hierarchical SAPO-34 zeolites with tunable porosity were hydrothermally synthesized by modulating the Si/Al molar ratios of the gel precursors, and the morphologies of SAPO-34 crystals gradually evolve from well-dispersed ultra-small nanocrystals to compactly polycrystalline aggregates, and to analogous polycrystallinites but adhered with minute amorphous debris by increasing the Si/Al ratio ranging from 0.20 to 0.67. The catalytic tests during methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reaction indicate that the Hier-SAPO-34-0.20 (Si/Al = 0.20) catalyst constructed by loosely nano-sized crystals centered at 50 nm presents prominent catalytic performances with about 2.5 times prolonged catalytic longevity and around 10 % improvement for the selectivity toward light olefins (ethylene and propylene) as compared to a reference catalyst. More interestingly, when Hier-SAPO-34-0.20 catalyst was in situ pretreated with NH 3 flowing, the selectivity of light olefins can be greatly increased by 18.1 % at the initial stage and the corresponding even selectivity with time-on-stream can be elevated by 6.9 %. It founds that in situ NH 3 -poisoned catalysts with improved light olefins selectivity are also suitable for ZSM-5 zeolite. These results reveal that the weakened strong acid sites modified by NH 3 -poisoning play a pivotal role in suppressing the undesired hydrogen transfer reactions and thus giving a high selectivity for light olefins. This work highlights the importance of acidity fine-tailoring by in-situ NH 3 -poisoning strategy on hierarchical zeolites for the improvement of light olefin selectivity, which would be valuable guidance for industrial applications.

Irregular influence of alkali metals on Cu-SAPO-34 catalyst for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with ammonia

Guangpeng Yang,Xuesen Du,Jingyu Ran,Xiangmin Wang,Yanrong Chen,Li Zhang,Vladislav Rac,Vesna Rakic,John Crittenden

SCR activity of Cu-SAPO-34 catalyst was reduced by alkali metal ions. The alkali metals ions (Li + , Na + and K + ) have shown irregular influences on Cu-SAPO-34. The order of poisoning strengths under 400 °C was found to be: Na +  > K +  > Li + , which is not consistent with the basicities of their corresponding metals. Experimental results and calculations showed that the alkali metal ions readily replace H + and Cu 2+ /Cu + ions. These exchanges result in the loss of Brønsted acid sites and migration of isolated Cu 2+ ions in Cu-SAPO-34, which decrease the NH 3 -SCR activity. Both the basicity and ion diameter will affect the exchanging behavior of an alkali ion. Na + and Li + ions will influence both H + and Cu 2+ /Cu + ions but K + ions only preferably replace the H + . We hypothesize that K + cannot enter into a small ring (6-membered ring) to replace a Cu 2+ /Cu + ion because of its large ion diameter. The displaced Cu 2+ /Cu + ions will transfer to adjacent unbonded Al site to form a CuAlO 2 species.

Influence of loading method on the performance of Zn/SAPO-34 catalysts and its catalytic preparation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from fructose dehydration

Longyu Wang,Na Wang,Suohe Yang,Guangxiang He,Haiyan Liu,Xianghai Meng,Chunming Xu,Zhichang Liu,Haibo Jin

A diverse suite of Zn-SAPO-34 catalysts was synthesized employing three distinct methodologies for the incorporation of zinc species: thermal ion exchange, wet impregnation, and physical mixing. The catalysts were characterized using various analytical techniques including XRD, FT-IR, BET, SEM, XRF, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, and Py-IR, to elucidate the crystal structure, morphology, surface acidity, and the presence of zinc species within the catalysts. The study showed that the method of zinc introduction markedly impacts the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. Different approaches to introducing zinc species significantly influence the acid strength and type on the catalyst surface, with variations in the existing states of zinc across the catalysts. Specifically, zinc species introduced via thermal ion exchange coexist as ZnOH + and ZnO within the catalyst, whereas those from wet impregnation and physical mixing are individually present as either ZnOH + or ZnO. Furthermore, the study examined the catalytic performance of these Zn-SAPO-34 catalysts in the dehydration of fructose to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Catalysts prepared via thermal ion exchange exhinited superior performance, achieving an remarkable HMF yield of 94.6 %. Additionally, in situ infrared technology was used to investigate the effect of zinc species introduction on the fructose dehydration process, indicating suggesting that the introduction of zinc species enhances the transformation of fructose molecules.

Seed-assisted grinding synthesis of SAPO-34 catalyst and its prolonged catalytic lifetime in the conversion of methanol to olefins

Lu Huihui,Duan Weiting,Zhao Xinhong

A cost-effective route has been developed for the synthesis of nano-sized triclinic SAPO-34 zeolite via seed-assisted grinding method using lower dosage of morpholine as the sole template. The synthesis conditions including silica source, silica concentration, crystallization temperature and time were refined to obtain SAPO-34 zeolite with high phase purity and crystallinity. Particularly, seed crystals preactivated by different methods were utilized to induce the synthesis of nano-sized SAPO-34 zeolites in the subsequent study. The resultant SAPO-34 samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, N 2 physisorption and NH 3 -TPD techniques. It was found that the introduction of seed crystals activated by mechanical milling for 20 min and chemical etching with 0.0001 M and 0.01 M H 3 PO 4 can not only effectively reduce the crystal size of SAPO-34 zeolites from 3–4 μm to 500–800 nm level, but also can modify their texture and acid properties. This nano-sized SAPO-34 catalyst exhibits a remarkably prolonged catalytic lifetime in methanol to olefins (MTO) reaction in comparison to the conventional micron-sized counterpart. Analogous to solvent-free synthesis of zeolites, this seed-assisted grinding synthesis method is simpler, more efficient than conventional hydrothermal synthesis. More importantly, this method provides a new avenue for preparing superior MTO catalyst.
