Poly(amidoamine) and Poly(propyleneimine) Dendrimers Show Distinct Binding Behaviors with Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate: Insights from SAXS and NMR Analysis

Tianfu Li,Naimin Shao,Yuntao Liu,Jingjing Hu,Yu Wang,Li Zhang,Hongli Wang,Dongfeng Chen,Yiyun Cheng

We investigate the interactions of generation 3 (G3) poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) and G3 poly(propylenimine) (PPI) dendrimers with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in aqueous solution. Size and structure of the dendrimer–SDS aggregates as a function of SDS/dendrimer molar ratio were revealed by SAXS and NMR. G3 PAMAM has a relatively open and dense-core structure, while G3 PPI with the same number of surface amine groups possesses a compact and uniform structure. Upon addition of SDS, much more SDS monomers were encapsulated in the interior of PPI rather than in PAMAM. More significant size increase in PAMAM–SDS aggregate is observed at low SDS concentrations, due to the binding of SDS on PAMAM surface and further assembly into larger supramolecular structures. Both noncooperative and cooperative binding of SDS on G3 PPI surface are observed, while only noncooperative binding is proposed on G3 PAMAM, due to its open surface and large surface group distance. The size of the PPI–SDS complex is larger than that of PAMAM–SDS at higher SDS concentrations. Within the investigated SDS concentrations, SDS exhibits much stronger interactions with G3 PPI than with G3 PAMAM. These results provide new insights into dendrimer–surfactant interactions and explain why PPI is much more cytotoxic than PAMAM.

Synthesis of PS-P2VP modified by the POSS group and its self-assembly behavior

Qiu Caihong,Liao Xiafeng,Zheng Yiru,zhang Haowen,Lu Zhen,Hou Linxi

To address the challenge of controllable and precise regulation of the phase behavior of block copolymers, this study proposes a novel strategy to regulate the self-organization behavior of PS-P2VP block copolymers through supramolecular self-assembly. PS-P2VP was synthesized via the RAFT method, and three POSS molecules with different non-covalent interactions were synthesized and used to form complexes with the PS-P2VP copolymers. Characterization techniques such as NMR, GPC, FT-IR, TGA, DSC, SAXS, and SEM, along with theoretical methods, were employed to analyze the impact of POSS on the phase behavior of PS-P2VP. The results demonstrate that POSS is particularly effective in modulating the self-assembled phase behavior in the lamellar phase of block copolymers, with BPOSS-Cl showing the most significant modulation, enabling the complexes to achieve third-order peaks in SAXS measurements. This conclusion is further supported by theoretical calculations. The study not only reveals the mechanism by which POSS regulates the self-assembly behavior of PS-P2VP but also provides a promising direction for advancing autonomous phase selection in block copolymers.

Nanocrystal maturation in doxorubicin liposomes determines functional performance: real-time insights from in situ SAXS

Yiwen Li,Fulin Ye,Lei Qu,Jialin Duan,Liangliang Kong,Guangfeng Liu,Chunming Yang,Na Li,Xiaohui Wei

The clinical success of PEGylated liposomal doxorubicin (DOX) is fundamentally attributed to its unique internal nanocrystalline structure. However, a notable discrepancy exists between the rapid drug uptake predicted by loading kinetics and the extended incubation times employed in actual manufacturing. By integrating in situ time-resolved synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), and in vitro release kinetics analysis, this study systematically elucidates the multi-step structural evolution and formation mechanism of DOX-sulfate nanocrystals during remote loading via the ammonium sulfate gradient method, along with its correlation with the final functional performance of the formulation. Our results demonstrate that the rapid drug uptake and achievement of target encapsulation efficiency (EE%) do not necessarily indicate the formation of a mature, stable nanocrystalline structure. Instead, during a critical post-loading maturation stage, the intraliposomal nanocrystals undergo gradual lattice optimization into a thermodynamically stable structure. Liposomes containing “sub-mature” aggregates exhibit pronounced burst leakage, whereas those with fully matured nanocrystals ensure near-zero-order release kinetics and superior stability. These observations provide useful insights that may inform future process optimization and offer a potential basis for structural quality control of liposomal nanodrugs. Operando SAXS/WAXS Reveals the Formation of Li+ Conduction Pathways Enabled by Apocynum Venetum-Derived Nanocellulose

Wenhui Cui,Shuaitong Liang,Junping Miao,Wenli Li,Hanwen An,Rongrong Yu,Juan Zhou,Ruiqi Shao,Zhiwei Xu

Molecular engineering of cellulose is essential for improving ionic conductivity and mechanical stability in solid polymer electrolytes. This work presents the first utilization of apocynum venetum, a drought-resistant biomass, as a sustainable source of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) to investigate lithium-ion (Li + ) transport mechanisms in composite polymer electrolytes for lithium metal batteries (LMBs). The reconstructed type II cellulose disrupts the polymer chain order by reorganizing hydrogen bonds and expanding amorphous regions, leading to a high Li + transference number of 0.67 and an extended electrochemical window of 5.5 V. Operando synchrotron SAXS/WAXS reveals that CNFs modulate the structural evolution of the electrolyte and facilitate the formation of continuous Li + conduction pathways within the amorphous phase. Through ion–dipole interactions among CNFs hydroxyl groups, PEO ether oxygens, and Li + , dynamic Li + ─O coordination structures are formed, enhancing Li + mobility. This work demonstrates the critical role of apocynum venetum-derived nanocellulose in enhancing the performance of bio-based polymer electrolytes.

In situ monitoring of the structural change of microemulsions in simulated gastrointestinal conditions by SAXS and FRET

Xia Lv,Shuguang Zhang,Huipeng Ma,Peipei Dong,Xiaodong Ma,Ming Xu,Yan Tian,Zeyao Tang,Jinyong Peng,Haibo Chen,Jianbin Zhang

Microemulsions are promising drug delivery systems for the oral administration of poorly water-soluble drugs. However, the evolution of microemulsions in the gastrointestinal tract is still poorly characterized, especially the structural change of microemulsions under the effect of lipase and mucus. To better understand the fate of microemulsions in the gastrointestinal tract, we applied small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to monitor the structural change of microemulsions under the effect of lipolysis and mucus. First, the effect of lipolysis on microemulsions was studied by SAXS, which found the generation of liquid crystalline phases. Meanwhile, FRET spectra indicated micelles with smaller particle sizes were generated during lipolysis, which could be affected by CaCl 2 , bile salts and lecithin. Then, the effect of mucus on the structural change of lipolysed microemulsions was studied. The results of SAXS and FRET indicated that the liquid crystalline phases disappeared, and more micelles were generated. In summary, we studied the structural change of microemulsions in simulated gastrointestinal conditions by SAXS and FRET, and successfully monitored the appearance and disappearance of the liquid crystalline phases and micelles.

SAXS unveils porous anodes for potassium-ion batteries: dynamic evolution of pore structures in Fe@Fe2O3/PCNFs composite nanofibers

Ruiqi Shao,Yingjie Dong,Qingqing Wu,Haiting Shi,Jinxi Bao,Feng Tian,Tianyu Li,Zhiwei Xu

The porous structure of composite nanofibers plays a key role in improving their electrochemical performance. However, the dynamic evolution of pore structures and their action during ion intercalation/extraction processes for negative electrodes are not clear. Herein, porous carbon composite nanofibers (Fe@Fe2O3/PCNFs) were prepared as negative electrode materials for potassium-ion batteries. Electrochemical test findings revealed that the composites had good electrochemical characteristics, and the porous structure endowed composite electrodes with pseudo-capacitive behaviors. After 1500 discharge/charge cycles at a current density of 1000 mA g−1, the specific capacity of the potassium-ion batteries was 144.8 mAh g−1. We innovatively used synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique to systematically investigate the kinetic process of potassium formation in composites and showed that the kinetic process of potassium reaction in composites can be divided into four stages, and the pores with smaller average diameter distribution are more sensitive to changes in the reaction process. This work paves a new way to study the deposition kinetics of potassium in porous materials, which facilitates the design of porous structures and realizes the development of alkali metal ion-anode materials with high energies.

Molecular packing of surface active ionic liquids in a deep eutectic solvent: a small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) study

Qintang Li,Kun Tong,Juan Qiu,Minhao Yan,Qiang Tian,Xiao Chen,Xiu Yue

During the past decade, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have shown promising application in the self-assembly of surfactants. Various aggregates such as micelles, vesicles, lyotropic liquid crystals, microemulsions and gels have been reported. In this research, the phase behaviours of imidazolium surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) CnmimBr (n = 12, 14, 16) were investigated in ChG. With the help of small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), the types and structure parameters of aggregates were determined. The molecular packing of SAILs was influenced by the solvophobic chain length, surfactant concentration, temperature and solvent, accounting for their different aggregation behaviours. This study would give a good description of the molecular packing of surfactants in DESs.

Effects of microstructure on the retention of proton conductivity of Nafion/SiO2 composite membranes at elevated temperatures:An in situ SAXS study

Jianchun Niu,Shuomeng Zhang,Yunqi Li,Xiaoyu Li,Jialin Zhang,Shanfu Lu,Qinggang He

The operating temperature of modified Nafion membranes remains too low to satisfy the requirements for high-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cells (HT-PEMFCs) because most can only operate well below 120 °C. In this article, we prepare a series of Nafion/SiO 2 composite membranes with different contents of doped silica nanoparticles by in situ growth of SiO 2 nanoparticles near the –SO 3 H group. The water dynamic change process and the functional properties of Nafion/SiO 2 composite membranes are studied and found to correlate well with structural parameters, such as crystallinity and average chain spacing. Also, microstructure information including the phase separation structure changes, structural complexity, and ion cluster fraction of Nafion/SiO 2 composite membranes at different temperatures are investigated using synchrotron-based in situ small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Differing from expectations, the amount of water in the Nafion/SiO 2 composite membranes may not be the decisive factor to maintain proton conductivity at relatively high temperatures. Instead, the complexity or connectivity of the proton transport channel may play a more important role in the effective proton transfer inside the composite membranes, which also provides valuable guidance and insight for the development of novel HT-PEM materials with well-designed ion transport pathways in the future.

MOFs sacrificial evolution and polymer chains/MOFs interlocking: unraveling the radiation resistance mechanism of MOF-based interphase in CFRP via WAXS/SAXS/SANS

Yue Yin,Rongrong Yu,Xianyan Wu,Shengkai Liu,Amna Siddique,Nishonov Akbarjon,Chunying Min,Jing Wang,Kun Song,Jingjing Han,Xiang Luo,Lei Chen,Chuanbin Yu,Yong Liu,Dong Liu,Zhiwei Xu

Radiation-induced degradation at the fiber-matrix interface significantly compromises the longevity of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites in nuclear and space environments. In the study, a metal-organic framework (MOF)-modified interphase was constructed to mitigate interfacial failure in CFRP under a high γ-irradiation dose of 1500 kGy. To elucidate the underlying anti-radiation mechanisms, a MOF/epoxy nanocomposite system was employed as a surrogate model for MOF-based interphase of CFRP, allowing for precise characterization. Chemically, multi-spectral analysis demonstrate that MOFs eliminated radiation-induced oxygenated radicals and reduced surface oxide layer thickness by over 50%. Physically, Synchrotron Wide-Angle/Small-Angle X-ray Scattering reveal a “sacrificial” evolution mechanism of MOFs, wherein MOFs undergo lattice contraction and volume densification to dissipate radiation energy. Meanwhile, Small-Angle Neutron Scattering has for the first time confirmed that epoxy molecular chains intercalate into the surface micropores of MOFs, forming an interlocking network that maintains stable physical bonding even after the MOF crystals contract. Mechanically, driven by these synergistic mechanisms, the MOF-based interphase significantly enhances radiation resistance, suppressing the loss in interlaminar shear strength from 14.5% (unmodified) to 9.4% and flexural strength from 17.5% (unmodified) to 10.3%. This study provides critical insights into the multiscale radiation response of MOF-based interphases in CFRP, offering a promising strategy for developing highly radiation-resistant composites.

Effect of nickel acetylacetonate addition on soot inception and growth in an ethylene flame studied by using in situ small-angle X-ray scattering

Xingyan Tang,Cong Wang,Fanggang Zhang,Qianpeng Wang,Juan Wang,Sönke Seifert,Randall E. Winans

Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique has been used to study soot formation and growth in an ethylene flame doped with Ni(acac) 2 (nickel acetylacetonate) at atmospheric pressure. An undoped flame under the same conditions was also studied to compare with the doped flame. The results show that the Ni(acac) 2 addition affects particle size, shape and morphology significantly at certain flame heights. It has reducing effect on the primary soot particle size at the flame heights between 17 and 34 mm. It delays the growth of primary soot particles at soot growth region. The soot volume fraction in the doped flame is smaller than that in the undoped flame by factors of 1.5–4 at different heights above the burner. In the most heights of the soot surface growth region (HAB   =   13–30 mm), the Porod exponents for the doped flame are smaller than those in the undoped flame, suggesting that the addition of Ni(acac) 2 in the ethylene flame induces a rougher surface and more irregular shape of the soot primary particles.

Cationic starch/pDNA nanocomplexes assembly and their nanostructure changes on gene transfection efficiency

Wang Hongwei,Li Xiaoxi,Chen Ling,Huang Xiaoyi,Li Lin

This study aims at developing biocompatible starch based gene carriers with good gene delivery and transfection efficacy. By controlling the molecular weight and aggregation behavior of spermine modified cationic starch (CS) molecules, nanocomplexes spontaneously formed through electrostatic interaction using CS and plasmid pAcGFP1-C1 (pDNA) displaying different structural changes (particle size, zeta potential, shape, compactness) response to the simulated intracellular pH variation. Results indicated that CS2 with weight average molecular weight ( Mw ) of 6.337 × 10 4 g/mol displayed relatively higher transfection efficacy (~30%) in HepG2 cells than others and revealed significantly low cytotoxicity. By simulating the intracellular pH variation, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) and Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) results demonstrated that CS2 could bind to pDNA tightly and form nanocomplexes with smaller and compact internal aggregate structure at acidic conditions, which facilitated the effective pDNA protection under endosome pH change, while larger and loose internal aggregate structure at physiological pH which promoted the disintegration of CS2/pDNA nanocomplexes. Therefore, CS with suitable Mw of around 6.0 × 10 4 g/mol represents a potential gene carrier for gene delivery. This study also demonstrated that controlling the internal nanostructure change of polymer/gene nanocomplexes could provide guidance in designing effective starch based gene carriers.

Constructing a long-range proton conduction bridge in sulfonated polyetheretherketone membranes with low DS by incorporating acid-base bi-functionalized metal organic frameworks

Jiashu Long,Xiaocan Zhang,Siqin Zeng,Tong Pei,Huixiao Ma,Xuesong Li,Xiaoyu Meng

Functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are being extensively developed as viable fillers to enhance the proton conductivity of proton exchange membranes . Herein, an amino-pendant sulfonic acid bi-functionalized MOFs material (UNCS)-doped SPEEK membrane with low degree of sulfonation (DS) can improve the proton conductivity as well as maintain the membrane dimensional stability. UNCS can act as bridges of proton donors and acceptors to reduce the activation energy barrier and shorten the distance of long-range proton conduction. Among all as-prepared membranes, SPEEK/UNCS-3 exhibited the highest proton conductivity of 186.4 mS·cm −1  at 75 °C and 100% relative humidity (RH), which is much greater than that of pristine SPEEK and Nafion 117. Benefiting from the acid-base pair interaction between the amino groups of UNCS and the sulfonic acid groups of SPEEK, the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of the composite membranes were enhanced. More interestingly, STEM-HAADF and SAXS characterization consistently revealed that UNCS served as bridges among proton channels in the composite membranes for continuous proton transport.
