Ce(III) ion-imprinted polymer (Ce(III)-IIP) grafted on Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles supported by SBA-15 mesopores microreactor was successfully synthesized via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization for selective removal of Ce(III) from aqueous solution. The characterization results suggest that the surface ion-imprinted polymer (IIP) synthesized by RAFT is a thin layer. Adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that Redlich-Peterson isotherm model best fitted the experimental data and the adsorption capacity of IIP was obviously higher than that of non-imprinted polymers (NIP) at the same conditions. The kinetics of adsorption followed the Thomas model. Moreover, competitive adsorption studies illustrated that Ce(III)-IIP offers the advantages of selectivity towards Ce(III) compared with NIP even in the presence of other metal ions. All above results indicated the potential application of Ce(III)-IIP for selective removal of Ce(III) from aqueous solution.
Mesoporous silica nanoparticles/polymer hybrid materials were prepared via metal-free surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Self-synthesized mesoporous SBA-15 with surface hydroxyl groups was modified with (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane, followed by anchoring of the ATRP initiator α-bromoisobutyryl bromide onto the surface via amide reaction. The SI-ATRP of methyl methacrylate was then carried out with fluorescein (FL) as a photocatalyst and trimethylamine (TEA) as an electron donor under irradiation with blue light. Thus, polymer chains grew directly from mesoporous walls. The hybrid materials were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, N 2 adsorption/desorption measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis. The effects of the ligand/photocatalyst molar ratios, solvent, and the monomer/initiator molar ratios on grafting density, molecular weight, and molecular-weight distribution were investigated. The results show that a higher TEA/FL ratio led to a higher reaction rate and better controllability of the polymerization but also to a lower grafting density. These properties were also affected by the solvent. With an increasing monomer/initiator molar ratio, the grafting rate, molecular weight, and grafting density exhibited increasing trends.

Quantum-dot (QD) white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are promising for illumination and display applications due to their excellent color quality. Although they have a high quantum yield close to unity, the reabsorption of QD light leads to high conversion loss, significantly reducing the luminous efficacy and stability of QD white LEDs. In this report, SBA-15 mesoporous particles (MPs) with two-dimensional hexagonal pore structures (2D-HPS) are utilized to largely enhance the luminous efficacy and color-conversion efficiency of QD white LEDs in excess of 50%. The reduction in conversion loss also helps QD white LEDs to achieve a lifetime 1.9 times longer than that of LEDs using QD-only composites at harsh aging conditions. Simulation and testing results suggest that the waveguide effect of 2D-HPS helps in reducing the reabsorption loss by constraining the QD light inside the wall of 2D-HPS, decreasing the probability of being captured by QDs inside the hole of 2D-HPS. As such, materials and mechanisms like SBA-15 MPs with 2D-HPS could provide a new path to improve the photon management of QD light, comprehensively enhancing the performances of QD white LEDs.
