Hydrophilic modification of a PSU membrane with block copolymer of PS-b-SBMA

Chong Shen,Bin Peng,Qin Meng

Sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) is a well-known zwitterionic molecule that can improve the hydrophilic property of hydrophobic membranes such as polysulfone (PSU). However, SBMA is too hydrophilic to dissolve in organic solvents. Hence, it is difficult to modify the polymer membranes via blending with their casting solution. This paper aims to synthesize an amphiphilic block polymers of polystyrene-block-sulfobetaine methacrylate (PS-b-SBMA) which can be well dissolved in organic solvents for membrane casting. The two PS-b-SBMA copolymers with SBMA content >28% were applied as the additives to cast the PSU ultrafiltration membrane. The PS-b-SBMA copolymer modified membranes showed lower contact angles and 3-folds higher water flux recovery after BSA treatment than the parent PSU membrane. Moreover, SEM images showed that the BSA contaminant on the modified membrane surfaces was much less than that on PSU membrane. Thus, such modified membranes can be applied to prevent protein fouling in the process of ultrafiltration.

PSU-g-SBMA hollow fiber membrane for treatment of oily wastewater

Shen Chong,Zhang Qian,Meng Qin

Ultrafiltration membranes can intercept oil particles smaller than 10 μm, but the membranes are easily contaminated by oil due to their hydrophobicity. To treat various oily wastewaters, we prepared a hydrophilic hollow fiber membrane (HFM) with anti-fouling property by grafting sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) onto polysulfone (PSU). For six simulated wastewaters containing emulsified oil at 1,000 mg/L, the PSU-g-SBMA HFM was able to remove 98.5–99.7% of oil, higher than that of PSU HFM at 91.1–98.9%. The oil concentration in filtrate was less than 15 mg/L, which could meet the discharge standard of wastewater. The water flux of PSU-g-SBMA HFM can be completely recovered after being washed by rhamnolipid and alkali solution, while the same cleaning process could not recover the PSU HFM. As found, the contact angles of oil droplets on the PSU-g-SBMA membrane were larger than those on PSU membrane, which indicated the improved hydrophilicity by PSU-g-SBMA. For 48 h of filtration to soybean and diesel oil/water emulsion, the effect of PSU-g-SBMA HFM was stable and the flux could be completely recovered by cleaning. Therefore, we provided a new method for oily wastewater treatment, which can efficiently and energy-saving remove various oil substances in wastewater. PSU-g-SBMA hollow fiber membrane could well remove >98.5% of various oil form wastewaters. RHA + NaOH solution could completely recover the water flux of the oil-contaminated PSU-g-SBMA hollow fiber membrane. Oil contamination on membranes was partly determined by the contact angles of oil.

Anti-fouling PVDF composite membrane with SBMA@AgNPs hybrid separation layer: Fabrication, performance and organic-inorganic coupling synergistic enhancement antifouling mechanism

Jianyu Wang,Junjie Yang,Zhenyu Cui

In this study, the flat-sheet membrane of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/polystyrene-maleic anhydride (SMA) was fabricated via the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) technique. Subsequently, a dual-functional anti-fouling hybrid separation layer was developed by co-immobilizing zwitterionic SBMA and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) onto the polymer membrane upper surface through Michael addition reaction and in-situ dopamine generation method. An organic-inorganic hybrid layer exhibiting dual resistance to both protein fouling and microbial fouling was constructed via the "SBMA-AgNPs" synergistic modification strategy. Furthermore, the antifouling mechanism and performance of the membrane system were systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that when BSA and Escherichia coli (E. coli) were employed as organic and microbial foulant models respectively, the membrane loaded with both zwitterionic SBMA and inorganic AgNPs achieved a flux recovery ratio (FRR) of 96.8 % and antibacterial efficiency exceeding 99.9 %, significantly outperforming membranes loaded with only either AgNPs or SBMA. Meanwhile, the irreversible resistance during operation reduced to 4.5 % and the pure water flux (PWF) decay rate reduced to 20.7 %. Finally, based on the evaluation of the long-term stability and FRR of post-backwashing, the synergistic enhancement anti-fouling mechanism of "organic-inorganic" coupling was elucidated by combining the hydration layer theory of zwitterionic SBMA and the antibacterial mechanism of AgNPs. This study offers novel insights and approaches for the future advancements of water treatment membrane technology.

Fabrication of alginate-P(SBMA-co-AAm) hydrogels with ultrastretchability, strain sensitivity, self-adhesiveness, biocompatibility, and self-cleaning function for strain sensors

Xiaoqiang Jin,Huihong Jiang,Fenghui Qiao,Weipin Huang,Xiaojiong Bao,Zhengke Wang,Qiaoling Hu

Conductive hydrogels have attracted a myriad of interest due to their potential applications for human motion monitoring, personal healthcare diagnosis and so forth. However, fabrication of hydrogel-based strain sensors integrating with ultrastretchability, adhesiveness, strain sensitivity, biocompatibility, and self-cleaning function is still a challenge. Herein, a new type of semi-interpenetrating multifunctional hydrogels, which integrated all above practical features magically were prepared via a facile one-pot in-situ radical copolymerization method. Thereinto, [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) and acrylamide (AAm) copolymers cross-linked by N , N ′-Methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) served as the soft and functional matrix, whereas alginate was employed as the enhanced component. The transparent zwitterionic hydrogels had a max elongation and ionic conductivity of 1353% and 0.15 S/m, respectively. They could adhere onto various surfaces, including steel, glass, skin, and rubber. The repeatable adhesiveness, linear strain sensitivity within 0%–250% tensile strain and 0%–30% compressive strain provided remarkable working range and using stability. What's more notable was that the biocompatibility and self-cleaning function tested by MTT, live/dead assay, allergy patch tests, and plate colony-counting method imparted great possibility of practical application for strain sensors to hydrogels from a biological point of view.

Immobilization of an antimicrobial peptide on silicon surface with stable activity by click chemistry

Jingcai He,Junjian Chen,Guansong Hu,Lin Wang,Jian Zheng,Jiezhao Zhan,Yuchen Zhu,Chunting Zhong,Xuetao Shi,Sa Liu,Yingjun Wang,Li Ren

Infections associated with biomedical implants and devices pose a serious clinical challenge in hospitals worldwide. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have become a great prospect to inhibit this type of infection due to their broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity and low cytotoxicity. However, it is still a challenge to apply AMPs on the biomaterial surface as the activity of AMPs is sensitive to salt or enzyme. In the present study, we prepared a spacer molecule, poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (polySBMA), on a model silicon surface via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). We then modified the antimicrobial peptide HHC36 (KRWWKWWRR) with L-propargylglycine (PraAMP) to improve its salt-tolerant activity and integrated PraAMP onto the spacer molecule using click chemistry. We employed X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle goniometry, and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to confirm the success of the immobilization process. We also characterized the antimicrobial activity and stability of the surface with an antimicrobial assay. The results reveal that the modified surface exhibits good antimicrobial activity to inhibit 98.26% of E. coli, 83.72% of S. aureus, and 81.59% of P. aeruginosa. Furthermore, as compared to the control group without the polySBMA spacer, the modified surface improved its resistance to enzymolysis. An in vitro CCK-8 assay also illustrated that this surface showed negligible cytotoxicity to mouse bone mesenchymal stem cells.

Preparation and characterization of protein-resistant hydrogels for soft contact lens applications via radical copolymerization involving a zwitterionic sulfobetaine comonomer

Wanlu Zhang,Guangji Li,Yinlei Lin,Liying Wang,Shuqing Wu

We aimed to introduce hydrophilic sulfobetaine-type zwitterionic groups to macromolecular chains of copolymers to construct novel copolymer hydrogels with anti-protein-fouling performance that could be used as soft contact lens (SCL) materials. Using hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), N-vinyl pyrrolidinone (NVP) and sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) as comonomers, several copolymer hydrogels with different SBMA contents, poly(HEMA-NVP-SBMA), are synthesized via radical copolymerization in an aqueous phase. Surface chemistry, structural morphologies, water contact angle (WCA), equilibrium water content (EWC), visible light transmittance and tensile mechanical properties are investigated. The prepared hydrogels exhibit a closed-type porous structure. With increasing SBMA content in the comonomer mixture, the prepared copolymer hydrogel pore size gradually increases up to the micron level, WCA tends to decrease, EWC tends to increase, and visible light transmittance slightly increases, but their tensile mechanical properties decline. The amounts of protein Lyz and BSA adsorbed on the copolymer hydrogels and on commercially available EASY DAY® SCLs as a control are also determined by protein adsorption tests. The amount of protein adsorbed on the copolymer hydrogel decreases with increasing SBMA content. For the hydrogel prepared using the comonomer mixture with 5.0 wt % SBMA, the amount of adsorbed Lyz is 0.91 μg/cm2, which corresponds to only 56.8% of the amount adsorbed on EASY DAY® SCLs. Thus, novel SCL materials with high water content and excellent anti-protein-fouling performance were efficiently constructed by introducing sulfobetaine-type zwitterionic groups into a traditional polymer hydrogel system.

P(SBMA)/SiO2–Ag+ Modified Cotton Fabric for Highly Effective and Antibacterial Oil/Water Separation

Huanhuan Bai,Yuxin Chen,Chengzhi Song,Yanyan Dong,Xu Meng

Superhydrophilic/submerged superoleophobic cotton fabrics with antibacterial properties were obtained by loading SiO 2 nanoparticles and Ag + on the surface of cotton fabrics through SiO 2 –Ag + composite sols, followed by the modification of the cotton fabrics with dopamine methacrylamide (DMA) and [2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide (SBMA). The surface morphology and wettability of the modified fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG), and contact angle measurement. The underwater contact angle and surface wettability analysis showed that the modified cotton fabric had an underwater oil contact angle of 166.5°. The prepared fabric can be used as an effective medium for the gravity-driven separation of oil/water mixtures. The modified fabrics showed resistance to sparing of vegetable oils or different organic solvents, and the average separation efficiency was better than 93% for all types of oil/water mixtures and up to 97%. In addition, the modified fabrics successfully inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with excellent antimicrobial properties.

Development of Zwitterionic Poly(SBMA-AA) Coatings for Ureteral Stents Enhanced Lubrication and Antifouling Properties

Q. Xu,C. B. Zhang,L. J. Wei,Y. X. Li,W. L. Liang,F. J. Jing,Y. X. Leng

Ureteral stents are employed to relieve ureteral stenosis, but they face challenges including high friction that causes endothelial damage, microbial colonization, and encrustation. The long-term use of ureteral stents usually leads to pain, increased urinary frequency, and even secondary surgery. To address these issues, ureteral stents require lubricating antifouling surfaces to reduce tissue damage, bacterial infection and encrustation. Herein, we report an antifouling and lubricating hydrophilic coating based on the zwitterionic polymer poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate-acrylic acid) (poly(SBMA-AA)) prepared using UV-initiated polymerization. Controlled monomer feed ratios were used to study the antimicrobial and anti-encrustation capacities. The poly(SBMA-AA) coatings were hydrophilic, which facilitated the formation of a hydrated layer, thereby reducing friction. The friction test revealed that the coatings could achieve an initial friction coefficient as low as 0.023. After 15 days of immersion in artificial urine, the coefficient of friction remained stable at approximately 0.027, indicating its long-term lubricity and potential to reduce tissue damage. Furthermore, as the AA monomer molar ratio increased, the coatings exhibited enhanced antibacterial adhesion, and demonstrated superior anti-encrustation performance in a 30-day urinary crystallization model. This study proposes a novel approach for developing multifunctional ureteral stent coatings that integrate long-term lubrication, antibacterial adhesion activity, and anti-encrustation capabilities.

Study on Preparation and Antibacterial Property of DOMA-SBMA Copolymer Coatings on Stainless Steel Surfaces

Fei Wan,Linlin Zhang,Chao Feng,Wenwen Yan,Andreas Hermann Gerdes,Ruixuan Tong,Zhengyang Zhou

A combination of surface wettability and antibacterial performance is highly imperative for construction of antibacterial coatings. In this study, motivated by the antibacterial properties of zwitterionic polymer, mussel-inspired adhesion, and the “grafting to”, a novel DOMA-SBMA copolymer with adhesion and wettability is developed for constructing a bacteriostatic surface. Specifically, the antibacterial coating is prepared via free radical polymerization and grafting to methods on the surface of stainless steel, and characterized by SCA, FTIR, XPS, SEM, and AFM to confirm the modification process. Antibacterial activity evaluation usingStaphylococcus aureus(S. aureus) andEscherichia coli(E. coli) shows that the coating presents satisfactory antibacterial performance. The results showed that DOMA-SBMA coating is enough for antibacterial application, with high antibacterial efficiency againstE. coli(92.2%) andS. aureus(95.0%). In summary, the bioinspired coating developed here may improve the stability of zwitterionic coatings and provides a simple preparation strategy for constructing antibacterial coatings.

Methacryloxyethyl sulfobetaine (SBMA) based hydrogel with functional enhancement by acrylamide, glycerol, and thymol for strawberry preservation

Zhichao Yang,Xiaohong Guo,Ziqiang Qin,Fengjun Guo,Di Wu,Bangdi Liu,Kunsong Chen

A robust hydrogel rapidly fabricated via one-pot method within 2 min. • Integrated functional enhancement by acrylamide, glycerol, and thymol. • PSA/Glyc@THY shows >500 kPa compressive strength and 200-cycle stability. • Hydrogel shows 16.74% weight loss rate in air and 125% swelling ratio in water. • PSA/Glyc@THY inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi without damaging strawberries. Postharvest fruit preservation faces dual challenges of microbial infection and physical impact, necessitating flexible packaging with integrated antimicrobial and mechanical functions. Leveraging acrylamide's (AM) high polymerization activity, efficient redox initiator, methacryloxyethyl sulfobetaine's (SBMA) physical crosslinking synergy, and glycerol's (Glyc) dual function in reducing viscosity and promoting hydrogen bonding, this study achieved rapid gelation within two min to construct PSA/Glyc@THY hydrogel. The material exhibited exceptional mechanical strength (compressive strength of 518.01 kPa, stable over 200 cycles) and remarkable environmental stability (water loss <20% in open air, swelling ratio 125.36%). The 1% thymol-loaded hydrogel showed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity ( Escherichia coli : 78.9% OD 600 reduction; Staphylococcus aureus : 80.7%; Botrytis cinerea : 24.30 mm inhibition zone), completely suppressing mold on strawberries without surface damage, with confirmed biocompatibility. This study offers a promising solution for flexible fruit packaging that integrates antimicrobial and mechanical functions to reduce postharvest losses during transportation and storage. A multifunctional antifog, antifrost, and self-cleaning zwitterionic polymer coating based on poly(SBMA-co-AA)

Zou Weirong,Fan Zhuizhui,Zhai Shixiong,Wang Siwei,Xu Bi,Cai Zaisheng

AbstractIn this work, a multifunctional coating was developed by grafting a zwitterionic poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)-co-acrylic acid [poly(SBMA-co-AA)] polymer onto a glass slide, which possesses excellent antifog, antifrost, and self-cleaning properties. These properties are attributed to the strong hydration of the hydrophilic zwitterionic PSBMA segments. The durability of the coating can be improved because the carboxyl group (–COOH) of the PAA segment enables formation of a robust covalent bond with the amino group (–NH2) on the substrate. The coating presents long-term stability, as proved by water contact angles, which were stable at 12 ± 1° after exposing the coating in ambient environment for 60 days or immersing in deionized water for 24 h. In addition, the underwater oil contact angle measurement demonstrated that an oil stain on the zwitterionic poly(SBMA-co-AA) polymer coating can be easily removed upon contact with water, showing self-cleaning performance. These properties verified that the zwitterionic multifunctional coating exploited in this research has many potential application prospects, including construction, automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding, biomedical, and other optical fields.Graphic abstract

The One-Step Preparation of Mussel-Inspired PDA/SBMA Composite Membranes for Efficient Oil–Water Emulsion Separation

Chao Wang,Shengwei Fang,Renfeng Zhou,Yanlin Ye,Wangjin Cha,Yanrong Jia,Huagang Ni,Peng Ye

Faced with the large amount of oily wastewater with complex compositions generated from petrochemical, food, and other industries, traditional separation technologies often struggle to simultaneously achieve high efficiency and economic feasibility. Therefore, the development of novel separation materials and methods is urgently required. In this study, inspired by mussel chemistry, a commercial PVDF membrane was modified to achieve superhydrophilicity via a one-step co-deposition strategy. Dopamine was used to initiate the polymerization of the SBMA monomer and form covalent bonding, while its excellent adhesive property enabled the construction of a stable PDA/SBMA synergistic interfacial layer. After the introduction of abundant zwitterionic groups onto the membrane surface, a stable hydration layer was formed, endowing the membrane with pronounced superhydrophilicity and creating an oil-repelling interface underwater, thereby imparting excellent underwater superoleophobicity. Various characterization techniques were employed to systematically investigate the morphology, elemental composition, wettability, and antifouling properties of the membranes before and after modification. By optimizing the SBMA content, the prepared superhydrophilic membrane exhibited a minimum water contact angle of 26°, and the pure water flux increased by 22.6 times compared with the pristine membrane. The membrane also demonstrated high permeation flux for various oil-in-water emulsions (exceeding 2200 L m −2 h −1 at 0.05 MPa) and high separation efficiency (up to 99.5% under gravity-driven conditions). In addition, the membrane showed excellent chemical stability in strong acidic and alkaline environments, as well as good salt resistance and corrosion resistance. This study provides a theoretical basis for enhancing membrane separation performance through the synergistic modification of polydopamine and zwitterionic polymers.
