This study presents the practical synthesis of platinum nanoparticle decorated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pt/MWCNTs) catalysts and their novel use in hydrogenating styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) triblock copolymers. The Pt/MWCNTs catalyst exhibited remarkable activity and selectivity in fully hydrogenating the polystyrene and polybutadiene segments within a styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer. The characterizations proved that the Pt/MWCNTs catalyst possesses well-dispersed Pt nanoparticles with a large specific surface area (159.5501 m 2 /g). Additionally, the catalyst is with a mesoporous structure. As a result, the catalytic hydrogenation of SBS using a Pt/MWCNTs catalyst achieves a high degree of hydrogenation, with 100 % selectivity towards the polystyrene and polybutadiene blocks in the SBS triblock copolymer at 180 °C after 9 h. The Pt/MWCNTs catalyst was characterized via SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XRD, XPS, Raman, TG, and BET. Simultaneously, the SBS and cyclic block copolymer (CBC) were characterized via GPC, FTIR, 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, and TG. In this work, Pt/MWCNTs catalyst with high activity and selectivity is developed for unsaturated polymer hydrogenation.

In this research, solutions of styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymer (SBS) in 2-ethoxyethyl methacrylate (EOEMA) were used to prepare strippable films via rapid visible-light curing, where the mixture of camphorquinone (CQ), diphenylsilane (DPS) and diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate (Iod) was employed as the photoinitiating system, LED@405 nm, sunlight or household LED panel light as the light source and no any solvent was involved. The double bond conversion for pure EOEMA under LED@405 nm was firstly monitored by real-time FTIR and it reached 72% within 300 s. The rapid-curing of SBS/EOEMA solutions were systematically investigated and it was found that the solution with 16 wt% SBS became completely dried at the presence of 2.16 mol% crosslinker and 3.6 wt% photoinitiating system after 240 s irradiation under LED@405 nm. The tensile strength , elongation at break and glass transition temperature of the resultant strippable film were determined to be about 4.4 ± 0.5 MPa, 130 ± 11.2% and 6.9 °C, respectively, by mechanical properties testing and DSC measurements. Also, the decontamination efficiencies (DE) of household LED panel light/sunlight cured-strippable film for uranium nitrate on stainless steel , glass, and ceramic surface were evaluated to be higher than 90%. These results indicate that this rapid-curing strippable films would be a good candidate material for large-scale radioactive decontamination.

Herein, we report an approach to the preparation of a homogeneous styrene–butadiene–styrene triblock copolymer (SBS) dielectric elastomer (DE) with dramatically improved actuated strain by using a photochemical thiol–ene click reaction. The stock SBS was grafted with dipoles (ester groups) to increase the polarizability of SBS. The grafting degree of dipoles on SBS can be controlled by irradiation time to control its electromechanical properties. The grafting degree of modified SBS increases with the increase of irradiation time, and a maximum grafting degree of 81% can be achieved at a radiation time of 40 min. After modification, the phase mixing of PB and PS blocks occurs and the size of PS domains largely decreases, leading to the obvious decrease in the tensile strength and elastic modulus (Y). However, the modified SBS still shows good tensile strength (>3 MPa). More importantly, the dielectric constant (k) largely increases for the modified SBS. The simultaneous increase in k and decrease in Y result in a large increase in electromechanical sensitivity, and thus a large increase in maximum actuated strain and the actuated strain at low electric fields (e.g. 15 kV mm−1). In addition, the modified SBS shows consistently low dielectric loss. Our study provides a simple, effective and controllable chemical method to prepare a homogeneous DE with a high k, large actuated strain at a low electric field, good mechanical strength, easy processibility, and recyclability.

The catalytic hydrogenation of polymers and copolymers is an efficient method to produce high value hydrogenated products. Here, we successfully synthesized monometallic (Pt/MWCNTs) and bimetallic (PtNi x /MWCNTs) composite nanocatalysts using a simple chemical reduction method for the selective hydrogenation of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) copolymer. The bimetallic composite nanocatalysts with Pt-to-Ni ratios of 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4 showed a higher catalytic activity compared with monometallic composite nanocatalysts. The crystal structure and elemental analysis of the synthesized nanocatalysts are characterized by XRD and XPS. The change of binding energy due to the transfer of valence electrons between Pt and Ni was verified via XPS analysis. The PtNi x nanoparticles were firmly anchored on the MWCNTs, as observed by TEM and HRTEM analysis. The nanocatalysts are also with a mesoporous, face-centered cubic structure and high thermal stability. As a result, the nanocatalysts showed excellent performance, stability, and recyclability towards the benzene rings and unsaturated double bonds hydrogenation in the SBS copolymer, implying that the bimetallic composite nanocatalysts have effectively eliminated diffusion limitations and enhanced SBS molecules accessibility to active sites. Simultaneously, GPC, FTIR, NMR, TG, and DSC analysis were used to characterize the SBS and its hydrogenated product (cyclic block copolymer). Thermogravimetric analysis proved that cyclic block copolymer possesses a higher heat resistance (426 °C) compared to SBS (416 °C).

Anion exchange membrane (AEM) is a core component of potentially more efficient and cost-effective anion exchange membrane water electrolyzers (AEMWEs), which combine the advantages of traditional alkaline water electrolyzers (AWEs) and proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs). Despite extensive research efforts in recent years, AEMs still face significant challenges, particularly insufficient alkaline stability and limited dimensional/mechanical stability. In this work, we enhanced the mechanical and alkaline stability of AEMs by incorporating the thermoplastic elastomer polystyrene-block-polybutadiene-block-polystyrene (SBS) into the poly (terphenyl piperidinium) (PTP) matrix. The optimal PTP-SBS-2.5% membrane exhibits outstanding dimensional stability (9.4% swelling at 20 °C), robust mechanical properties (tensile strength of 51.5 MPa and elongation of 63.1% at break in wet state), low alkali absorption (0.875%) and exceptional alkaline stability (92.4% conductivity retention after 1500 h). Notably, the membrane demonstrates stable operation in AEMWE for over 3000 h with a low voltage decay rate of 41.1 μV h –1 . These results highlight the significance of SBS in enhancing both the alkaline stability and mechanical performance of PTP-based AEMs.
