Study on the resourceful reuse in SBS-modified asphalt of waste bagasse fibers based on green modification with tannic acid and FeOOH

Yang Ling,Han Fuhu,Muhammad Yaseen,Liu Yu,Zhao Zhenxia,Kong Hao,Li Jing,Zhang Honggang

Hydrophobic modification of bagasse fibers (BFs) through a green approach can promote its reuse in asphalt and enhance the utilization value of agricultural and forestry waste in road engineering. In contrast to traditional chemical modification, this study reports a new method for the hydrophobic modification of BFs using tannic acid (TA) and the in situ growth of FeOOH nanoparticles (NPs), resulting in FeOOH-TA-BF, which is used to prepare styrene–butadiene styrene (SBS)–modified asphalt. The experimental results show that the surface roughness, specific surface area, thermal stability, and hydrophobicity of the modified BF are improved, which is beneficial for enhancing the interface compatibility with asphalt. Specifically, compared with BF/SBS-modified asphalt, FeOOH-TA-BF/SBS-modified asphalt exhibits 39.21% and 23.26% increase in the elastic modulus G′ and viscous modulus G″, respectively, at the optimal dosage of 2.5%, corresponding to 6.15-fold and 7.13-fold increase in the fatigue life at 2.5% and 5.0% strain respectively, and 22.0% improvement in shear resistance performance. In the meantime, 2.5-fold enhancement of the storage stability. Therefore, this study provides a simple, environmentally friendly, and efficient hydrophobic modification method that is of great significance for promoting the resource utilization of solid waste BF. Effect of acylhydrazone self-healing agents with different structures on the properties of SBS modified asphalt waterproofing membrane

Yanheng He,Tianwei Zhang,Ming Zeng,Hao Duan,Bing Zhang,Jianying Yu

To prepare SBS modified asphalt (SMA) waterproofing membrane with excellent self-healing performance, in this paper, four self-healing agents (ASHA-A, ASHA-B, ASHA-C, ASHA-D) with acylhydrazone bonds and carbon-carbon double bonds (C C) were synthesized, and were used to prepare self-healing SMA waterproofing membranes (SSMA-A, SSMA-B, SSMA-C, SSMA-D). The effects of ASHAs with different structures on the structure, high and low temperature properties, joint peel strength and self-healing performance of SSMAs were investigated. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence microscope results showed that acylhydrazone bonds of ASHAs were introduced into the chains of SBS molecules, and the SBS in SSMAs occurred crosslinking through the C C of ASHAs and SBS, the crosslinked network structures of SBS in SSMA-C and SSMA-D were denser and more complete because ASHA-C and ASHA-D contained more C C involved in the crosslinking reaction. The softening point and low temperature flexibility of SSMAs were enhanced by the formation of the SBS crosslinked network structure, and the optimum dosage of ASHAs was 0.6%. The joint peel strength of SSMA-A, SSMA-B, SSMA-C and SSMA-D increased by 26.68%, 31.25%, 49.52% and 56.97% compared to SMA. The introduction of acylhydrazone bonds with reversible fracture and rearrangement significantly improved the crack self-healing performance of SMA, the impermeability times of SMA, SSMA-A, SSMA-B, SSMA-C and SSMA-D were 13.28 min, 37.29 min, 42.53 min, 53.34 min and 59.67 min after self-healing at 40℃ for 8 h, which indicated that ASHA-D with benzene ring and multiple C C had the best improvement in self-healing performance of SMA.

Mechanism of water damage resistance in hydrophobic modified asphalt under complex environmental conditions

Meijie Liao,Lei Luo,Yingli Gao,Zhengkang Li,Pengfei Liu

SBS modified asphalt is widely used due to its excellent performance at both high and low temperatures, but its water resistance still needs improvement. To enhance its moisture damage resistance, this study modified SBS asphalt with three hydrophobic materials: polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), hydrophobic nano-SiO 2 , and trimethoxymethylsilane (MTMS). Viscosity tests, FTIR analysis, and the Langmuir water diffusion model were used to evaluate the modification effects. The results showed that all three hydrophobic materials effectively reduced viscosity changes of the asphalt in neutral rainwater, seawater, and acid rain.the hydrophobic modifiers significantly enhanced the stability and deformation resistance of SBS modified asphalt mixtures (by 57.7 %, 43.5 %, and 30.5 %) During water aging, asphalt undergoes saturated hydrocarbon degradation and unsaturated functional group oxidation, which is accelerated by acid rain and seawater. PTFE delayed asphalt degradation through crosslinking, while nano-SiO 2 and MTMS formed a Si-O-Si network, reducing water and oxygen diffusion, thereby improving water aging resistance. The hydrophobic modification significantly lowered the asphalt's water absorption and diffusion rate, preventing moisture from reaching the asphalt-aggregate interface. Aging-generated functional groups like carboxyl and ether groups intensified internal moisture diffusion, but the hydrophobic materials effectively delayed aging and prevented water penetration. This study reveals the modification mechanisms of hydrophobic materials in complex water environments, providing theoretical support for improving SBS asphalt's water damage resistance.

Pavement performance analysis of carbon nanotube/SBS composite modified asphalt

Liu Bo,Li Xiaoliang,Li Sheng

In order to prevent early distress in asphalt pavement and save on subsequent operational and maintenance costs, modifying asphalt is an effective approach. Styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) block copolymers, due to their excellent physicochemical properties, have become a mature and widely used asphalt modifier. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess advantages such as a large specific surface area and high modulus, which, when incorporated into asphalt, can enhance its deformation resistance. To analyze the effect of incorporating CNTs on SBS-modified asphalt (SBS-A), this study analyzed the influence of different CNT concentrations on the high and low-temperature performance and aging properties of SBS-A through penetration, softening point, ductility, dynamic shear rheometry, and short-term aging tests. The optimal CNT concentration was determined to be 1.0%. Furthermore, the changes in the modified asphalt during the aging process were analyzed using infrared spectroscopy.

Effect of glutaraldehyde-chitosan crosslinked graphene oxide on high temperature properties of SBS modified asphalt

Junxian Huang,Yu Liu,Yaseen Muhammad,Jia Qing Li,Yuting Ye,Jing Li,Zhuang Li,Ruinan Pei

Composite material using glutaraldehyde (GA) cross-linked chitosan (CTS) and graphene oxide (GO-CTS-GA) was designed applying electrostatic interaction strategy under strong alkali environment. GO-CTS-GA was in turn applied to prepare styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) GO-CTS-GA/SBS composite modified asphalt (MA)_binder. The effect of GO-CTS-GA on the physical properties of SBS modified asphalt binder was investigated and its mechanism of action was analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy tests confirmed the retainment of GO flakes microscopic dimensions while compensating for the chemical structural defects and mechanical property damage of GO. The results of dynamic shear rheometer and multi-stress creep recovery tests indicated that the GO-CTS-GA/SBS-MA binder exhibited better viscosity performance and elasticity performance, rutting resistance and high temperature thermal stability. At 64 °C, the loss modulus of 0.10 % GO-CTS-GA/SBS-MA was 29.5 % and 25.2 % higher than that of SBS-MA and GO/SBS-MA, respectively. SEM and TEM analyses of the four components of asphalt binder before and after modification revealed that the change of asphaltene microscopic morphology seriously affects the stability of asphalt colloidal system. Fourier transform infra-red analysis of the MA binder revealed that the change of saturation fraction and colloidal polarity by GO-CTS-GA is responsible for the dispersion and cross-linking of SBS chain segments in the asphalt binder phase. This study provides important reference information for nanomaterials to change the macroscopic mechanical properties by modulating the microstructure, physical and chemical properties of asphalt binder at the micro and nano-scale.

Effect of synchronous surface grafting and intercalation bentonite on properties of SBS modified bitumen

Sanpeng Mao,Shangheng Zeng,Linghuan Li,Xiaobin Han,Jianying Yu

To better enhance the improvement effect of natural bentonite on the comprehensive performance of styrene-butadiene-styrene thermoplastic elastomer modified bitumen (SMB), in this study, 3-(trimethoxysilopropyl) dimethyl octadecyl ammonium chloride (DC5700) was used for synchronous surface grafting and intercalation of bentonite (DC5700-Bentonite). Meanwhile, γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propytrimethoxysilane (KH560) surface grafting bentonite (KH560-Bentonite) and octadecyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (ODBA) intercalation bentonite (ODBA-Bentonite) were used as comparison samples. The structure and properties of the bentonite and organic bentonites (DC5700-Bentonite, KH560-Bentonite and ODBA-Bentonite) were tested by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR), ultraviolet-visible spectrometer and contact angle measurement . The effects of bentonite and organic bentonites on physical, rheological and aging properties of SMB were investigated. FTIR and XRD results showed that KH560 was chemically grafted onto the surface of bentonite, ODBA was organically intercalated into the bentonite, while DC5700 achieved synchronous surface grafting and intercalation on the bentonite. Compared with KH560-Bentonite and ODBA-Bentonite, DC5700-Bentonite had the best lipophilicity and ultraviolet shielding ability. When the bentonite content was 4 wt% , KH560-Bentonite, ODBA-Bentonite and DC5700-Bentonite could increase the rutting factor of SMB by 2.9 ℃, 4.9 ℃ and 6.5 ℃, respectively, and reduce the ductility of SMB by 6.5 cm, 4.2 cm and 3.1 cm. Meanwhile, compared to SMBs containing KH560-Bentonite or ODBA-Bentonite, the SMB containing DC5700-Bentonite had the smallest creep stiffness at − 12 ℃, − 18 ℃, and − 24 ℃. The results indicated that DC5700-Bentonite was more conducive to increasing high-temperature performance of SMB than KH560-Bentonite and ODBA-Bentonite, and its adverse effects on low-temperature ductility and low-temperature cracking resistance of SMB were also significantly reduced. After thermal and ultraviolet aging, the deterioration extent of physical and rheological properties of SMB containing DC5700-Bentonite was significantly smaller than that of SMB containing KH560-Bentonite and ODBA-Bentonite. FTIR revealed that DC5700-Bentonite was more beneficial than KH560-Bentonite and ODBA-Bentonite in inhibiting the increase of carbonyl index and the decrease of butadiene index in SMB during aging. The comprehensive results revealed that compared to KH560 surface grafting bentonite and ODBA intercalation bentonite, DC5700 synchronous surface grafting and intercalation bentonite were more conducive to improving the physical and rheological properties, and aging resistance of SMB.

Electrospinning strategy for the preparation of nano-porous fibers as modifier for inducing the network structure and enhancing mechanical properties of SBS-modified asphalt

Zhaorong Zhu,Yu Liu,Yaseen Muhammad,Ruinan Pei,Yingyun Li,Jing Li

Electrospinning is used to control the interface structure of macro-polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibers, and nano-porous fibers (E-PAN) which possess enhanced adhesion and interface effects. Herein, E-PAN was prepared via electrospinning and was in turn incorporated into styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) asphalt to prepare PAN modified asphalt. The effect of E-PAN addition on the performance of modified asphalt was explored. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and AFM tests confirmed that E-PAN exhibited a highly rough nano-porous skeleton without any prominent structural damage during the preparation process. The three major indexes, dynamic shearing rheometer, MSCR, rotational viscosity, and thermogravimetric analysis tests results showed that E-PAN modified asphalt exhibited excellent viscoelasticity, anti-rutting and anti-fatigue properties and thermal stability (T HRI of 192.7°C). FT-IR test of the four components of modified asphalt confirmed that E-PAN chemically crosslinked with the saturates and aromatics in the base asphalt and SBS, which resulted in a uniform and well-developed network structure. In addition, Brauner-Emmett-Teller and fluorescence microscopy results confirmed that E-PAN got fully swollen in a behavior similar to that of SBS in the base asphalt, and hence helped SBS to form an excellent network structure in asphalt. E-PAN played the important role of stress buffer, mutual entanglement, and good thermal insulation inside the asphalt.

Novel rejuvenators for synergistically improving the high/low temperature performance of epoxy rejuvenated styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified bitumen

Qingyuan Ma,Hongwei He,Wenwen Yu,Jianjun Xu,Quanxin Xu,Jiaqi Xue,Yushi Jin,Rong Zhu,Chen Han,Zhengkun Wang,Chen Cui,Jie Ma,Fuyong Liu,Heng Zhang,Huayun Du

Highly efficient regeneration of the aging SBS modified bitumen (SMB) is crucial for promoting the achievement of low-carbon development goals. Restoring the structure or performance of the aged SBS is the focus of the present work. Many studies have proved that the high temperature performance of aging SMB is deteriorated by using epoxy-type structural repair agent. Literatures have proved that epoxy-type structural repair agents with benzene ring can make the high temperature performance improve slightly. Therefore, it is necessary to propose a method that can make the high temperature performance improve greatly. In this paper, a rejuvenator containing trimethylol propane triglycidyl ether (TMPTE) combined with vegetable oil (VO) was selected. At the same time, the epoxy structural repair agent containing benzene ring, i.e., E51 epoxy resin (ER) was also selected to compare these two rejuvenators on recovering the comprehensive properties of aging SMB. Through GPC, FM, AFM and TGA tests, ER repair agent has good recovery effect for SBS network structure and adhesion performance for aging SMB. While TMPTE repair agent has good recovery effect for high temperature stability of the aged SMB and molecular weight of the aged SBS. Through DSR and ductility tests, it was found that these two rejuvenators had outstanding recovery for low temperature performance of aging SMB. Through MSCR and soften point tests, it was found that the high temperature performance of the repaired SMB by TMPTE was close to non-aging SMB. This suggests that TMPTE/VO is more effective in restoring the high/low temperature performance of regenerated SMB as a whole. This study can provide guidance for the recovery of comprehensive performance of epoxy-type repair agents regenerated SMB in a cost-effective and environment friendly way.

Investigation of microstructure, rheological property and self-healing performance of SBS modified bitumen with dynamic disulfide bonds prepared by one-step method

Tianwei Zhang,Shanjun Gao,Yanheng He,Ronghua Zhuang,Xiaobin Han,Zhenyu Zou,Jianying Yu

To reduce fossil energy consumption and environmental pollution, in this study, SBS modified bitumen (SMB) with self-healing performance was developed through directly adding aliphatic disulfide (ALD) containing double C C bonds in the melt blending process for enhancing its service life, and sulfur/SBS modified bitumen was also prepared for the comparison of ALD/SMB performance. Fourier transform infrared spectrum analyses indicated that the disulfide bonds of ALD have been successfully introduced between SBS molecular chains . Fluorescence microscopy imageries revealed that the addition of ALD improved the network structure of SMB, and the SMB had a more complete network structure when the dosage of ALD was 0.6%. Compared to SMB, the softening point and ductility of SMB with 0.6% ALD were increased by 4.5 °C and 5.2 cm, respectively. The results of dynamic shear rheometer and bending beam rheometer indicated that ALD improved high- and low-temperature rheological properties of SMB. The fatigue healing test revealed that ALD improved the self-healing performance of SBS modified bitumen. When the dosage of ALD was 0.6%, the healing index of ALD/SMB reached 0.86, while the healing index of SMB and sulfur/SMB were only 0.51 and 0.48. The fracture healing test showed that SBS modified bitumen with 0.6% ALD had a self-healing rate of 66.3%, whereas that of SMB and sulfur/SMB were only 35.8% and 38.2% after 20 h of healing at 50 °C, indicating that ALD significantly enhanced the self-healing performance of SBS modified bitumen.

Controllable synthesis of SiC wrapped LDHs to reinforce microwave absorption and exothermic properties of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer modified asphalt

Chao Li,Guodong Zeng,Min Zhou,Yang Fang,Zongwu Chen,Yishen Xu,Siyin Ding,Miao Yuan,Hao Li,Shaopeng Wu

Combination of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and layered double hydroxides (LDHs) has commonly applied in asphalt to improve anti-ultraviolet aging performance, but it can not afford the reparation of cracks caused by aging of asphalt. Also, few researches focused on the structure and performance changes during synthesis of LDHs. Based on self-healing performance of asphalt, the produced cracks can be repaired by microwave heating. Therefore, the controllable synthesis of traditional microwave absorber SiC to wrap LDHs (SwL) at different temperatures was studied in this paper, and the effects of different SBS/SwL combination on the microwave absorption and exothermic properties of modified asphalt were studied. The SwL was firstly synthesized at 200 °C, 350 °C, 500 °C and 650 °C. Then morphology, phase composition, chemical structure of different SwL were evaluated. Finally, based on different combination of SBS and SwL, the effects of SBS/SwL on the microwave absorption in the frequency band from 1 GHz to 18 GHz and exothermic characteristics at 2.45 GHz of the modified asphalt were analyzed. The results show that SwL can be synthesized successfully, and the processing temperature significantly affects the structure of SwL. The SBS/SwL-200 modified asphalt has the best microwave absorption and exothermic properties. When used in self-healing asphalt, it is more advantageous to choose 200 °C as the synthesis temperature of SwL.

Preparation and performance of self-healing SBS modified bitumen based on dynamic disulfide bonds

Tianwei Zhang,Shanjun Gao,Jianying Yu,Yanheng He,Xiaobing Han,Ronghua Zhuang

In this study, self-healing SBS (S-SBS) was first synthesized by introducing dynamic disulfide bonds into the molecular structure of SBS. Subsequently, a self-healing SBS modified bitumen (S-SMB) was prepared by blending of S-SBS and bitumen. The chemical structure of S-SBS and S-SMB was charactered by Fourier   transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and Raman spectrometer. The physical properties, low-temperature rheological properties and self-healing performance of S-SMB were investigated. The results of FTIR and Raman showed that dynamic disulfide bonds were successfully introduced into the molecular structure of SBS. With the increase of dynamic disulfide bonds content in SBS molecular structure, the softening point and ductility of S-SMB enhanced, and the penetration was decreased. Fluorescence microscope showed that the S-SBS in S-SMB formed a complete crosslinking network structure compared to SMB. The bending beam rheometer illustrated that the low-temperature rheological properties and the cracking resistance of SMB were improved by introducing dynamic disulfide bonds. The fluorescence microscopy observation indicated that the crack in S-SBS can self heal. The fracture healing test and fatigue healing test demonstrated that dynamic disulfide bonds endow S-SMB with great self-healing performance. The fracture healing rate of S-SMB reached 58.7% after 4 h of healing, and the fatigue healing index reached 0.93 after 1 h of healing.

Anti-aging and self-healing SBS-modified bitumen waterproofing membrane based on montmorillonite and dynamic acylhydrazone bonds

Yanheng He,Jiheng Jiang,Tao Zhang,Xiaobin Han,Quantao Liu,Tianwei Zhang,Hao Duan,Zhenyu Zou,Zizhou Shen,Jianying Yu,Shi Xu

The development of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) block copolymer modified bitumen (SMB) waterproofing membrane with excellent anti-aging and crack self-healing properties is important to solve the persistent problems of building leakage. In this study, vinyltriethoxysilane modified montmorillonite (VTES-MMT) and acylhydrazone compound (AC) were synthesized and used to prepare a novel anti-aging and self-healing SMB. The structures of VTES-MMT and AC were characterized, and the effects of VTES-MMT and AC on the microstructure, physical properties, mechanical properties, self-healing properties and aging properties of SMB were systematically investigated. The results show that vinyl-functionalized VTES-MMT and AC with vinyl ends were successfully synthesized and they have good thermal stability. VTES-MMT and dynamic acylhydrazone bonds were introduced into SMB through the cross-linking reaction between vinyl and SBS. VTES-MMT and AC improved the dispersion stability, physical and mechanical properties of SMB and endowed it with excellent crack self-healing properties. Compared with SMB, the healing index (HI) and the impermeable pressure of VTES-MMT/AC/SMB increased by 52.86 % and 0.41 MPa. The introduction of VTES-MMT and dynamic acylhydrazone bonds effectively mitigated the oxidative condensation of bitumen and the chain-breaking degradation of SBS during the aging process. Compared with SMB, the low temperature flexibility increment, elongation at break retention rate and peel strength retention rate of VTES-MMT/AC/SMB were reduced by 6℃, 18.66 % and 21.76 % after UV aging, respectively. The cracks of VTES-MMT/AC/SMB could still be healed completely after aging, and its HI and impermeability pressure decreased by only 14.38 % and 0.08 MPa after UV aging, which implied that the synergistic effect of VTES-MMT and AC significantly improved the aging resistance of SMB, and VTES-MMT/AC/SMB still maintained a good crack self-healing ability after aging.
