This study aimed to achieve toxicity control of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and pirimiphos-methyl (PMM) via the UV/H 2 O 2 process by optimizing the reaction parameters. The results show that both drugs had a good degradation effect under the following parameters: a H 2 O 2 molar ratio of 1:200, and neutral conditions. SDZ and PMM could be degraded by more than 99% within 3 min, respectively. In the Daphnia magna acute toxicity assay and Vibrio fischeri inhibition assay, both SDZ and PMM exhibited a phenomenon of increasing toxicity. Additionally, through the use of density functional theory (DFT) calculation and HPLC-QTOF-MS, 21 transformation products (TPs) were identified, and the principal degradation pathways were proposed. The toxicity of the TPs was determined by comparing the QSAR prediction results with toxicity test data. As a result, under the higher UV light intensity (2300 μW/cm 2 ) and neutral conditions, SDZ showed highest toxicity, whereas PMM showed lowest toxicity under the lowest UV light intensity (450 μW/cm 2 ) and neutral conditions. Four main toxic TPs were identified, and their yields could be reduced by adjusting the reaction parameters. Therefore, the selection of appropriate reaction parameters could reduce the production of toxic TPs and ensure the safety of water environment.

Soil microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have been applied for the in situ remediation of soils polluted by single antibiotics. However, the investigation of only single antibiotic pollution has hindered MFC application in real-world soil remediation , where the effects of multiple antibiotics with similar chemical structures on the fate of antibiotics and their corresponding antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) remain unknown. In this study, antibiotic removal rates, microbial community compositions, metabolite compositions, and ARG abundances were investigated in soil MFCs by adding two commonly used antibiotics (sulfadiazine, SDZ, and sulfamethoxazole, SMX), and comparing them with the addition of only a single antibiotic (SDZ). The antibiotic removal rate was higher in the soil MFC with addition of mixed antibiotics compared to the single antibiotic due to enhanced biodegradation efficiency in both the upper (57.24% of the initial antibiotic concentration) and lower layers (57.07% of the initial concentration) of the antibiotic-polluted soils. Bacterial community diversity in the mixed antibiotic conditions increased, and this likely resulted from the decreased toxicity of intermediates produced during antibiotic biodegradation. Moreover, the addition of mixed antibiotics led to lower risks of ARG release into soil environments, as reflected by higher abundances of host bacteria in the single antibiotic treatment. These results encourage the further development of soil MFC technology for in situ remediation of antibiotic-polluted soils.

The excessive application of antibiotics and surfactants resulted in their massive accumulation in waste activated sludge (WAS), but the co-occurrent impacts of antibiotics and surfactants on the antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) fates have seldom reported. This work mainly revealed the roles and critical mechanisms of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) on the sulfadiazine (SDZ) stressing for ARGs distribution during WAS anaerobic fermentation. High-throughput qPCR and metagenomic analysis revealed that SDBS aggravated the SDZ selective pressure, and accelerated the proliferation of ARGs. The total abundance of ARGs was increased from 8.81 × 10 10 in SDZ to 1.17 × 10 11 copies/g TSS in the SDBS/SDZ co-occurrence system. Specifically, the absolute abundances of ermF (MLSB), mefA (MLSB), tetM-01 (tetracycline), tetX (tetracycline), sul2 (sulfonamide) and strB (aminoglycoside) were risen from 4.60 × 10 8 –7.44 × 10 9 copies/g TSS in the SDZ reactor to 1.02 × 10 9 –4.63 × 10 10 copies/g TSS in SDBS/SDZ reactor. SDBS was contributed to the SDZ solubilization and simultaneously effective in disintegrating extracellular polymeric substances and improving cell membrane permeability, which would facilitate the SDZ transport and its interactions with ARGs hosts. Consequently, the microbial community structure was evidently altered, and the typical ARGs hosts ( i.e. , Saccharimonadales and Ahniella ) were greatly enriched. Also, the cell signal transduction systems ( i.e. , glnL , glrK and pilG ), oxidative stress response ( i.e. , frmA and recA ) and bacterial secretion systems ( i.e. , VirB4 ), which were related with ARGs propagation, were all provoked in the co-occurred SDBS/SDZ reactor compared with that of sole SDZ. PLS-PM analysis suggested that the bacterial community was the predominant factor that determined the ARGs fates, followed by mobile genetic elements and metabolic pathway. This work demonstrated the interactive effects of surfactants and antibiotics on the ARGs fates in WAS fermentation systems and gave insightful implications on the ecological risks of different exogenous pollutants.

Soil microbial fuel cells (MFCs), a novel ecosystem technology, have recently been intensively studied for antibiotic-polluted soils. However, actual agricultural soils are always contaminated by mixed pollutants, especially plasticizers from extensively used agricultural plastic films. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP, a representative plasticizer in soil) on the removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ, a frequently detected antibiotic in natural environments), antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and the microbial community in soil MFCs. Our results confirmed that soil MFCs maintained a good antibiotic removal ability even under the influence of residual DEHP and achieved a higher removal performance at higher DEHP concentrations due to enhanced power generation. Specifically, a higher DEHP concentration had a favorable effect on antibiotic removal in soil MFCs because the biodegradation efficiency was improved in both the upper ( i.e., to 0.268 ± 0.021 mg kg −1 from 4.867 ± 0.221 mg kg −1 ) and lower layers ( i.e. , to 0.293 ± 0.047 mg kg −1 from 4.867 ± 0.221 mg kg −1 ) of polluted soils. Moreover, a high DEHP concentration significantly promoted the abundance of bacteria associated with electricity generation compared with a lower DEHP concentration, resulting in the promotion of extracellular electron transfer, and enhancing SDZ degradation. The increased ARG abundance may have been caused by the enrichment of ARG potential hosts brought about by high DEHP concentrations, likely due to the increased conjugative transfer rates of the RP4 plasmid due to decreased membrane permeability and an increased reactive oxygen species content. The results revealed the ecological risk of residual DEHP in soil that promotes ARG transmission in soil MFCs, although it has the potential to reduce SDZ toxicity through horizontal gene transfer. We also highlight concerns regarding the management of antibiotics and plasticizers in soil. The negative effects of plasticizers on antibiotic removal should be carefully evaluated when using soil MFCs for the in situ remediation of antibiotic-contaminated soil.

The present study investigated the mechanism of manganese ion (Mn(II))-activated periodate (PI) for rapid removal of sulfadiazine (SDZ). The Mn(II)/PI system showed excellent SDZ degradation results with 99.8 % degradation efficiency within 2 min at pH = 5.5. Mechanism study reveals that the degradation of SDZ in the Mn(II)/PI system takes place mainly through an electron transfer process. Mn(II) can be oxidized by PI to formed the in-situ MnO 2 , followed by the generation of MnO 2 -PI complex. Electrochemical methods have confirmed that the generated MnO 2 -PI complex significantly contributes to the degradation of pollutants. MnO 2 -PI mediates the transfer of electrons from SDZ to PI surface through surface vacancies, thereby achieving efficient degradation of pollutants. p -methoxyphenyl sulfone (PMSO) is used as a probe compound, and almost 90 % of PMSO is converted into PMSO 2 in the Mn(II)/PI/SDZ system, manifesting that excessive PI may oxidize active Mn(IV) to Mn(V). And the generated Mn(V) also contributes to the SDZ degradation. The SDZ degradation pathway is proposed and the transformation of iodine species is detected. The final iodine species in the system are iodate. The chloride culture experiment has confirmed that the production of organic iodine is very low, indicating no significant health risks. This study reveals mechanism of periodate-based process, providing theoretical and technical implementation guidelines of periodate in water treatment.
