Inhibition of excessive SEI-forming and improvement of structure stability for LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 by Li2MoO4 coating

Yu Juan,Peng Jiaxin,Huang Wenlong,Wang Lejie,Wei Yinbo,Yang Naixing,Li Linbo

A Li 2 MoO 4 -coated LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathode material was successfully synthesized by introducing Mo source during the lithium mixing process. The influence of Li 2 MoO 4 -coating on the structure, morphology, and electrochemical performance related to LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 has been studied. The results of the cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential voltage curve measurement show that the electrode polarization and irreversible capacity of the modified LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 are smaller than the virgin material. Meanwhile, the capacity retention of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 increases from 64.6 to 90.59% after the 100th cycle at 1 C (1 C=200 mA g −1 ). Additionally, compared with the recycled materials, a thinner solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film was formed on the modified LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 material. The improvement of the electrochemical performance for LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 is mainly due to the existence of the Li 2 MoO 4 protective shell that improves the structural stability of the core material, avoids direct contact between the electrolyte and the active material, and suppresses the occurrence of side reaction.

Targeted research on the single role of lithium Bis(oxalate)borate in the film-forming process through a novel lithium salt-free electrolyte system

Shiyou Li,Li Yang,Peng Wang,Zhaojuan Li,Wenbo Li,Haining Liu,Xiaoling Cui

A blank comparison group of lithium salt-free electrolyte system, replacing the lithium salt of electrolyte with a redox shuttle agent, is constructed to give targeted research on the single role of lithium bis(oxalate)borate (LiBOB) salt, especially of bis(oxalate)borate anions (BOB − ) in the film-forming process. By combining and comparing all available studies, such as attenuated total reflectance (IR-ATR), X-Ray photoelectron diffraction spectrum (XPS), electrochemical impedance spectrum (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tests and quantum chemical calculation , the formation mechanism of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film is proposed. Results reveal that the prior reduction of BOB − anions can postpone the reduction potential and hinder the decomposition rate of carbonate solvents, but promote the formation of a dense, conductive and effective SEI film. This work provides a novel way to investigate the film-forming mechanism and has guiding significance for revealing the effect of other kinds of lithium salts on the surface film formation.

Improvement for tolerance of lithium metal counter electrodes towards sodium contamination in hybrid Li/Na-ion electrolytes

Liu Liyang,Zhao Xufan,Qi Jiaxing,Abdussalam Abubakar,Zhang Wei,Wang Hongyu,Xu Guobao

Since the concept of hybrid Li/Na-ion batteries (HLNIBs) was proposed, many cathode materials with excellent performance and low cost have been studied. However, in HLNIBs, mixed cationic electrolyte is formed as Na + is extracted from the cathode, resulting in relatively complicated and unstable electrochemical performance, especially for the half-cell test with lithium metal as the anode. It is necessary to consider the tolerance of lithium metal counter electrode to sodium contamination in half-cell test with hybrid-ion electrolyte containing different cations. In this work, we have found that lithium metal electrodes in hybrid-ion electrolyte are unstable and Na + causes significant polarization. The polarization influences over potential and complex interface properties and thus reduces the accuracy of half-cell tests. To solve the problem, lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) with excellent film-forming properties was utilized as an additive of symmetrical batteries to form solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film. The adverse effect of Na + on the kinetics of hybrid-ion electrolyte was confirmed by regulating the SEI film on lithium metal electrode. The SEI film exhibits a selective effect on Li + and Na + and inhibits the interfacial transport of Na + , which significantly reduces the overpotential of the batteries and the interface migration impedance and also improves the stability of lithium counter electrode. Lithium metal with stable interfacial properties in the presence of LiDFOB is a reliable counter electrode that resists sodium contamination in half-cell test. Graphical abstract

TriMethylene sulfite as a novel additive for SEI film formation in lithium-ion batteries

Zhao Liuyang,Jing Dong,Shi Yueli,Zhuang Quanchao,Cui Yongli,Ju Zhicheng,Cui Yanhua

In this study, TriMethylene sulfite (TMS) was evaluated as a new electrolyte additive for improving the performances of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Charge-discharge, cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to analyze the electrochemical reaction processes. The results showed that the initial charge capacities of the graphite electrode in electrolytes without and with TMS were 332.54 and 362.93 mAh g −1 , respectively. After 100 cycles, the charge capacities were 321.05 and 353.4 mAh g −1 and the capacity retention rates were 96.6 and 97.4%, respectively. The impedance of the electrode in the electrolyte with TMS was reduced. These improvements in performance were benefited from the effective formation of a stable, compact, and smooth solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film with low resistance.

A semi-fluid multi-functional binder for a high-performance silicon anode of lithium-ion batteries

Hui Xu,Xiaoxi Liu,Wenlu Sun,Guanghui Xu,Yihong Tong,Hongyuan Xu,Jiawei Li,Zhao Kong,Yong Wang,Zhiyong Lin,Hong Jin,Hongwei Chen

Currently, a variety of binders are developed to inhibit the rapid capacity fading of Si. The Si anodes are mainly enhanced by the chemical bonding effect on the surface of conventional solid-state binders. However, with a huge volume change of silicon, solid binders are easily deactivated. Herein, a semi-fluid binder termed GPC is designed based on a viscoelastic crosslinking network with abundant active sites and self-healing performance. The backbone of the binder network is in situ synthesized using guar gum (GG), polyacrylic acid (PAA), and citric acid (CA). Serving as the flexible joints and the plasticizer of the network, CA small molecules remarkably improve the viscoelasticity of the binder to tolerate the volume change of Si via rearranging particles in the network during cycling. Moreover, CA can form a layer of surface coating on Si to stabilize the SEI for long-term electrochemical performance. As a result, the Si@GPC electrode shows excellent cycling stability and exhibits a superb capacity of 1292 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1. This work illustrates the advantages and prospects of designing semi-fluid binders for high-performance batteries.

Cross-Linkable Binders for Si Anodes in High-Energy-Density Lithium-Ion Batteries

Jin-Xin Xue,Si-Xin Jia,Tian-Qi Xiang,Jian-Jun Zhou,Lin Li

Although silicon (Si) has a high theoretical capacity, the large volume expansion during lithiation has greatly hindered its application in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Among the strategies for improving the performance of Si anode, the role of binders should not be underestimated. Here, a novel strategy for designing a cross-linkable binder for Si anode has been proposed. The binder with hydroxyl and nitrile groups can be in situ covalently cross-linked through the amide group in the batteries. The cross-linked binder (c-POAH) shows high elasticity and strong adhesion to Si particles and the current collector. Si||Li half coin cells using the c-POAH binder have excellent cycle performance and the capacity retention ratio is 67.1% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C. Scanning electronic microscopy images show that the c-POAH binder can contribute to suppressing the pulverization of the Si anode. Moreover, the investigation with X-ray photoelectronic spectrum demonstrates that the decomposition of the liquid electrolyte on Si anode has been mitigated and the c-POAH binder can promote the formation of a more stable SEI film. Our strategy of endowing the binder with good elasticity through in situ cross-linking has opened up a new route for developing binders, which will definitely promote the application of Si anodes in high-energy-density LIBs.

A dual-salt coupled fluoroethylene carbonate succinonitrile-based electrolyte enables Li-metal batteries

Chuankai Fu,Yulin Ma,Shuaifeng Lou,Can Cui,Lizhi Xiang,Wei Zhao,Pengjian Zuo,Jiajun Wang,Yunzhi Gao,Geping Yin

Succinonitrile (SN)-based electrolytes are attractive due to their considerable ionic conductivity and high oxidative stability. However, the spontaneous chemical side-reactions between SN and Li-metal restrict the extensive applications of such electrolytes in next-generation advanced Li-metal batteries. Herein, we report a novel SN-based electrolyte SN–DLi–FEC which combines the dual-salt (lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonimide) (LiTFSI) and lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiODFB)) and the fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) additive. Compared with other SN-based electrolytes such as SN–SLi–FEC (single salt combined with FEC), SN–DLi–FEC can form a more stable and durable organic–inorganic composite SEI film rich in the B–F bond and LiF on the surface of the Li-metal anode. As a result, interfacial compatibility of the SN-based electrolytes and the Li-metal anode can be significantly enhanced. Moreover, SN–DLi–FEC shows high oxidation resistance, high ionic conductivity and good thermal stability. The LiCoO2 (LCO)/Li battery equipped with SN–DLi–FEC exhibits excellent electrochemical performances at room temperature (RT) and high temperature, and high thermal safety. The novel SN-based electrolyte prepared in this work could be a promising candidate providing better reliability and safety for the development of Li-metal batteries.

A Mechanical Strength-Enhanced Polymer Coating with Anion-Phobic and Solvent-Phobic Capability for Advanced Lithium Metal Anodes

Jing Zhong,Zhixing Wang,Xiaoli Yi,Xinhai Li,Huajun Guo,Wenjie Peng,Hui Duan,Jiexi Wang,Guochun Yan

Lithium (Li) metal is considered an attractive anode for high-energy Li secondary batteries, but it suffers from a short cycle life and serious safety hazards due to its high reactivity and dendritic growth. A potential approach is to construct a stable artificial SEI film. Herein, we report a polymer coating that is composed of LiTFSI and PVDF-HFP, which is spread onto the Li foil (25 μm) by the blade coating method (abbreviated as Li-PH@Li). During drying, LiTFSI reacts with Li metal to form LiF that is distributed evenly in the coating layer, thus improving the mechanical strength of the coating. In addition, the coating layer could selectively transport the Li-ions and delay the transport of solvent and PF6–, alleviating the side reaction between Li metal and electrolyte. Therefore, a dense Li deposition layer is obtained during a long cycle. Consequently, the Li-PH@Li||LFP coin cell with a low N/P ratio (3:1) could maintain 355 cycles at 0.5 C (0.79 mA cm–2), while only 240 cycles for the bare Li||LFP cell. Moreover, a lean Li-PH@Li||LFP pouch cell, whose N/P ratio is 1.9:1, can also sustain more than 200 cycles. This work paves a new approach to protect Li metal anodes for high-performance Li metal batteries.

Concentration induced modulation of solvation structure for efficient lithium metal battery by regulating energy level of LUMO orbital

Cong Kang,Jiaming Zhu,Yijie Wang,Shanshan Ye,Yueping Xiong,Fanpeng Kong,Geping Yin

Nitrile electrolytes have attracted extensive attention for achieving high-voltage lithium metal batteries. However, the poor compatibility of nitrile electrolyte with Li anode remains a huge challenge owing to severe side reactions. Herein, changing concentration of LiTFSI in succinonitrile (SN) is proposed to improve interface compatibility by regulating the solvation structure. The higher coordination number (1.3) of TFSI − in high concentration electrolytes results in a LiF-rich SEI film, accounting for the superior performance of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 |Li cell with negligible capacity fade after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. Density functional theory (DFT) suggests that the solvation structure with a high coordination number of TFSI − towards Li + leads to a reduced Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) energy level, which promotes the decomposition of TFSI − to form LiF-rich film. Also, a reduced decomposition energy barrier of anion is demonstrated. This work provides an encouraging way to enhance interface stability via modulating the solvation structure achieved by regulating concentration.

Effect of surface oxidation on the performance of silicon nanoparticles

Gao Liang,Li Wenxin,Jiang Jiahao,Wang Mengjie,Yao Changyu,Li Li,Gao Hanyang

Reducing silicon particle size in lithium-ion battery anodes not only mitigates surface stress, prevents pulverization, and reduces SEI film cracking but also significantly enhances surface area, thereby amplifying the impact of particle surface chemistry on performance. In this study, the surface of silicon particles with 80-nm diameter were oxidized in air to prepare Si@SiO x with a core–shell structure. We investigated the effect of different oxidation levels of the shell on the cycling performance of the nanosized silicon particles. The results showed that longer heating times decreased initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) but improved cycling performance. An interesting phenomenon was observed that, when the oxidation level was high, fast charging reduced battery capacity; while at lower oxidation levels, fast charging maintained or even slightly increased battery capacity. Based on electrochemical analysis, we proposed an explanation for this phenomenon: for small-sized nanoparticles with a large specific surface area, the effect of potential is particularly significant. The oxidation level of the particle surface affects the impedance of the SEI film, and high charge/discharge rates will also produce bias voltage, both of the two factors will limit the formation of crystallized Li 15 Si 4 (c-Li 15 Si 4 ). Reducing the amount of c-Li 15 Si 4 can effectively improve the cycling performance of the electrode, but excessive bias voltage will sacrifice the lithium storage capacity of the electrode. For the designing of small size silicon particles, both factors should be considered.

Lithium-Ion Batteries

Liuyang Zhao,Shilei Bian,Zhicheng Ju,Yongli Cui,Yanhua Cui,Yueli Shi,Quanchao Zhuang

In his study, we reported adiponitrile (ADN) as a novel electrolyte additive for the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode electrode in voltage ranges of 3.0-4.4 V, 3.0-4.6 V and 3.0-4.8 V. The electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated by linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), a charge/discharge test, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results of this study showed that adding ADN to the electrolyte could effectively enhance the reversible capacity and cycling performance of the cathode electrode. The initial discharge capacities were 167.8 mAh g -1 and 214.8 mAh g -1 in electrolytes without and with 3% ADN, respectively. And the capacity retention rates were 68.4% and 70.4% at a voltage range of 3.0-4.6 V after 100 cycles in electrolytes without and with 3% ADN, respectively. The electrochemical performance was improved because of the compact and smooth solid electrolyte interface (SEI) film, which lowered the impedance between the cathode and the electrolyte by suppressing the decomposition of LiPF6 and improving the stability of EC. In addition, adding 3%ADN to the electrolyte was favourable for obtaining a lower R ct, which could promote the charge-transfer process by suppressing the interfacial reaction between the electrode and electrolyte.

Molecular space linkage of dipentacyclic anhydride additives for long-lifespan Li-metal batteries with Ni-rich cathode

Ridong Hu,Chong Mao,Hao Zhuo,Xiaobing Dai,Lewen Yang,Xugang Shu,Yang Li,Zhanqiang Li,Wenhong Ruan,Fujie Yang,Xudong Chen

The precarious interfacial chemistry between the electrode and electrolyte is the determining step that restricts the long cycle life of Ni-rich-based Li-metal batteries. Here we show that the robust cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layers can be engineered by tuning the spatial linking structure of dipentacyclic anhydride (DPA) additives. Specifically, an inorganic-rich CEI/SEI layer induced by CBDA (a DPA featuring a quaternary ring spatial linking structure) exhibits superior Li + interfacial kinetics and an ultra-stable cycle performance, outperforming the other systems. As a result, the NCM811ǁLi cells containing CBDA show excellent long-term performances, even under high voltage, high load, and high charge-discharge current density, respectively. The coin-cell using a low-loading cathode exhibits 129 mAh g- 1 discharged capacity for over 200 cycles at a 6 C rate. Moreover, The high-loading cathode retains 80 % capacity after 312 cycles at 1.0 C. Furthermore, the NCM811ǁLi pouch cell demonstrated a capacity retention rate of 99.8 % after 50 cycles. Prolonged stable cycling for 900 cycles (93 % capacity retention) in an NCM811ǁGraphite pouch cell is enabled by CBDA. The DPA-based additives in this work offer a highly promising and feasible route to achieving a long-term and high-capacity lithium battery featuring a Ni-rich cathode.
