Plate-like metal nanomaterials have attracted much interest due to their anisotropy, high aspect ratio and large surface area. The synthesis of non-noble metal nanocrystals with high purity remains challenging due to the poor regulation mechanism of their seeds, which limits their property and application studies. This paper presents a selective etching mechanism that effectively facilitates the identification and dissolution of non-target seeds during the synthesis of Cu nanoplates. This innovative approach not only enables the production of highly pure nanoplates but also allows for the shape transformation of nanoparticles into nanoplates. The resulting Cu nanoplates exhibit tunable localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics and high enhanced performance in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). This method offers a novel approach to the synthesis and purification of metal nanocrystals.

The heterogeneity of extracellular vesicles (EVs) surface information represents different functions, which is neglected in previous studies. In this study, a label-free SERS analysis approach is demonstrated to study fundamental EV biological and physical information heterogeneity by matching specific sizes of nano-enhanced particles. This strategy reveals informative, comprehensive, and high-quality SERS spectra of the overall exosome surface, and effectively circumvents the key information loss caused by the spatial resistance of NPs binding to the 293 exosomes' concave structure. The classification of normal and cancerous cell-derived exosomes by PCA method, the accuracy is improved from 91.2% to 95.1% by optimizing sizes of nano-enhanced particles. In addition, stem cell-derived EVs of diverse sizes and morphologies similarly show acuity of spectrum variation to NPs size, which is conductive to qualitative studies. This new strategy will offer a widened in-depth understanding of the surface information, size, and morphology of EVs, which can be applied to the study of biological functions.

Nanoenzyme reactors based on shell-isolated colloidal plasmonic nanomaterials are well-established and widely applied in catalysis and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing. In this study, a “double wing with one body” strategy was developed to establish a reduced food antiseptic sensing method using shell-isolated colloidal plasmonic nanomaterials. Gold nano particles (Au NPs) were used to synthesize the colloidal plasmonic nanomaterials, which was achieved by attaching ferrous ions (Fe2+), ferric ions (Fe3+), nitroso (NO−) group, cyanogen (CN−) group, and dopamine (DA) via coordinative interactions. The oxidation-induced reaction was utilized to generate •OH following the Fe2+-mediated Fenton reaction with the shell-isolated colloidal plasmonic nanomaterials. The •OH generated in the cascade reactor had a high oxidative capacity toward acid preservatives. Importantly, with the introduction of the signal molecule DA, the cascade reactor exhibited also induced a Raman signal change by reaction with the oxidation product (malondialdehyde) which improved the sensitivity of the analysis. In addition, the stable shell-isolated structure was effective in realizing a reproducible and quantitative SERS analysis method, which overcomes previous limitations and could extend the use of nanoenzymes to various complex sensing applications.

Due to the practical impossibility in controlling the number and distribution of "hot spots" on or close to the surfaces of enhancing substrates, internal standards are generally used to improve the accuracy and precision of quantitative surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Traditional internal standard methods based on either univariate ratiometric models or conventional multivariate calibration models can use the information of only one characteristic SERS peak of only one internal standard, which weakens the efficiency of traditional internal standard methods in improving the quantitative results of SERS assays. In this contribution, the concept of using multiple internal standards was introduced for the first time to quantitative SERS assays by incorporating a unique spectral shape deformation (SSD) quantitative theory with multiple-internal-standard embedded core-shell nanoparticles . The quantification of phosmet residues on apple skins by SERS technique with Au-core/Ag-shell nanoparticles embedded with both 2-MB and PATP as enhancing substrate was used to illustrate the applicability of the proposed strategy. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed multiple-internal-standard strategy based on SSD achieved much more accurate and precise concentration predictions for phosmet residues on apple skin than traditional single-internal-standard methods based on either univariate ratiometric calibration models or conventional multivariate calibration models. The SERS quantitative results of the multiple-internal-standard strategy were comparable to those obtained by LC-MS/MS. The average relative deviation between the quantitative results of the proposed method and those of ICP-MS was about 8%. The good accuracy of the proposed method makes it a promising alternative for quantitative SERS assays.

By means of a simple and photo-induced method, four colors of molybdenum oxide quantum dots (MoOx QDs) have been synthesized, using Mo(CO)6 as the structural guiding agent and molybdenum source. The as-prepared MoOx QDs display diverse optical properties due to the different configurations of oxygen vacancies in various nanostructures. Among them, crystalline molybdenum dioxide (MoO2) with a deep blue color shows the most intense localized surface plasmon resonance effect in the near-infrared (NIR) region. The strong NIR absorption endows MoO2 QDs with a high photothermal conversion efficiency of 66.3%, enabling broad prospects as a photo-responsive nanoagent for photothermal therapy of cancer. Moreover, MoO2 QDs can also serve as a novel semiconductor substrate for ultrasensitive surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) analysis of aromatic molecules, amino acids and antibiotics, with SERS performance comparable to that of noble metal-based substrates. The therapeutic applications of MoO2 QDs open up a new avenue for tumor nanomedicine.
