Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have been widely used in the surface modification and construction of nanocomposites due to their excellent surface activity and high tensile strength. In this manuscript, nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by implanting poly(glycidyl methacrylate)-modified CNCs (CNCs@PGMA) and biomass phytic acid (PA). After extracting CNCs from microcrystalline cellulose, PGMA was successfully grafted on the surface of CNCs by surface-initiated Activator Generated by Electron Transfer Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SI-AGET ATRP). With the assistance of PA, the reversible hydrogen bonding interaction between the internal structures of the matrix was promoted to construct the CNCs@PGMA/PA self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels. The obtained hydrogels by using CNCs@PGMA and PA as additives have excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength of 1.39 MPa) and self-healing ability (91.4% after 6 h). This study develops a facile method for the preparation of nanocomposite hydrogels with excellent self-healing properties. Graphical abstract

Herein, the functional poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) film that has a superior UV-blocking performance was made through the surface-initiated activators regenerated by electron transfer atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-AGET ATRP). The colorless polydopamine (PDA) initiator layer was adhered to the alkaline-pretreated PVDF film through the copolymerization of dopamine (DOPA) and initiator-bearing DOPA (DOPA-BIBB). Then the reactive organic UV absorbent [3-(4-benzoyl-3-hydroxyphenoxy)-2-hydroxypropyl] 2-methylprop-2-enoate (BPMA) was incorporated to the initiator layer by the SI-AGET ATRP method, resulting in the formation of a PBPMA-chain-grafted PVDF film (PVDF-g-PBPMA). Furthermore, the effects of the experimental conditions such as the BPMA concentration and reaction time on the performance of as-prepared modified films were investigated. The characterization results indicated the formation of the PBPMA film on the PVDF film surface and the outstanding UV-blocking performance of the modified films. The PVDF-g-PBPMA film fabricated under the optimum conditions could completely block the UV light in the range of 200–370 nm.

The hazardous indoor air pollutants of formaldehyde (HCHO) are harmful for human health. Nowadays, it is important to design and fabricate green and efficient HCHO removal materials for HCHO removal from polluted indoor air. In this manuscript, cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as green nanomaterials were successfully surface-initiated by 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl acetoacetate (MEAA) as functional monomer via surface-initiated Activator Generated by Electron Transfer Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (SI-AGET ATRP) for the application in removal of HCHO. The employment of CNCs/Poly(2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl acetoacetate) (CNCs@PMEAA) as nanocomposites were further implanted self-healing waterborne coating for an effective way to remove HCHO. From the result, the HCHO removal efficiency reached 97.5% of CNCs@PMEAA-type coating within 300 min at room temperature , which was much higher than that of the conventional coating (82.8%). This study provides some promising green methods for designing nanocomposite's waterborne coating to remove HCHO at room temperature.
Polymer brushes based on poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) have been successfully grafted from the surface of silica coated iron oxide (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 ) nanoparticles via surface-initiated activators generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-AGET ATRP). The size of the nanoparticles could be adjusted from 7.3 to 9.6 nm by varying the precursor concentration of iron(III) acetylacetonate. The Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles possessed a highly crystalline structure, and the saturation magnetization of the as-prepared magnetite was strongly related to the particle size. Furthermore, the grafted PGMA content on the magnetic nanoparticles could be controlled by varying the ligand to transition metal ratio in a N , N , N ′, N ″, N ″-pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA)/CuBr 2 catalyst system. The maximum grafted content was 23.1% at a ratio of [PMDETA] 0 /[CuBr 2 ] 0 = 2:1.
